Hey guys im going to start building up a 4x4 its a 89 hilux xtra cab.. leaf front and rear.. just wandering how much i could lift it and how to get a decent amount of flex out of it . as most hiluxs i have seen are very rigid and have next to no flex at all.. its already got a 4 iinch lift but im prosuming thats its going to be very rigid and i want it kinda high just for the extra under carrage clearance but also what it soft for flex . is that possible with leafs ? some tips would be great as im only newish to 4x4 and seeking some advice.

Cheers Aaron

go back to standed leafs and get the lift you want with extended shackles and big tyres, disconnect the swaybars

it will all depend on the spring rate i.e. how much weight they are rated for and if they are suited to what you want to do I had 4" Blue Max leafs and shocks on mine rated as medium duty so I could carry my bike or quad when required and got plenty of flex with or without the bike/s on. the info you are after would be better sorced on outerlimits4x4.com or similar 4wd web site but here is a few pic's of the flex from my 4" lift with 33"procomp Exterains.

Getting a hilux to flex is this simple...

Rear springs and banana shackles in the front
IFS rears and 200mm shackles in the rear.
If you don't mind the odd defect, get shock hoops for the front and an inboard kit for the rear.
Add some bilstein shocks and you will have all the flex you could ever want or need!

For all of the above, you should see change out of $1200.

not worried about defects as its not going to be registered thinking of macking it comp truck

if you want to turn it into a comp truck I'd be looking at surf rear with coil set up and solid axle coil front as well you should be able to pick a whole one off fleabay for under a grand and what you dont need sell on and make your coin back, you will always get more flex from the coils but if you are going to stay leaf then I'd go the drop shackles or air set up ect as OPE114 sugested.

yer i would prefere coils but as my first comp truck i might leave it leaf and see how it goes from there aye. i figured im gonna do a hilux cause everyone up here is running patrols and landcuisers so i figured why not do something ya dont see very much of

cheers for the advice man

If you really want to go all out mate, use the same springs and shocks as I said, just add drop shackles!
Coils are great, but for the money you will spend getting them
in and to work properly, they aren't worth it!
Spend the extra cash on front and rear air lockers, and you will pretty much be unstoppable!!

yer sounds the way too go mate . im definitly gonna put an airlocker in the front.. it has an lsd in the rear so if i get it tightned that should be enough for the rear or is a locker still a better option yet? im budgiting about $8G for all accesories excluding tyres we will see how i go ... ill post a pic as soon as i have it in my driveway smile.gif

Twin air lockers would be ideal mate, but if the budget can only fit one, get the front done as you said.

As Outlaw said, bubs' knows hilux's better then anyone.
I would get your shackles, shocks, shock hoops, inboard rear kit thru him.
Springs you can get from pretty much any wrecker.
The older and saggier the better in my opinion.
You want to keep you car as low as possible. Jacked up lux's are notorius for laying over due to there narrow wheel base.
