Hi everybody, dont know if i posted in the rite place, so please help me out along the way.

I have a 1991 toyota corolla hatch AE94. The engine for my car is a 4A-FE. The problem is I'm starting to get a little bored smile.gif so i would like to know how to increase the power of my car, even if its just a little. Hopefully getting the extra power with out putting a new engine (e.g. 4A-GE) or a turbo set up in my car. I am very happy with my car, just want a little more power. I don't have very deep pocket either sad.gif still a student and work part time. All your input will be very appreciated. thanks

what have you already got?

start basic, with breathing mods like freeing up the intake a little bit, new exhaust manifold + exhaust system etc.

don't expect to get any massive power gains with exhaust... pod etc

you'll barely notice it

thanks for all the replies so far, just to let you know i have a K&N panel filter and i think 4" autotechnica exhaust canon. going to get new spark plugs, oil filter and synthetic oil this week.

also is putting a pod filter in more better than the panel filter i already have, any noticeable performance ?

rig up a bit of pipe to your stock air box will do best benefits and only cost you a few dollars.

other than that look into the rest of the exhaust but your really pissing into the wind. Better off doing suspension upgrades.

save your money and either wait to get a better car or do a 4a-ge/gze conversion

yeah, even after exhaust/intake upgrade you'll be lucky to get 10hp.. you may feel the difference for the 1st 5 minutes, but after that you will forget it's even changed.

Weight reduction? if you are keen on gaining a bit more power without splurging out too too much dosh, take out everything in the car you don't need + exhaust & intake and you should feel a nice little gain

Wouldnt bother with rolla club, most of the cars on there are old carby fed keXX...

Twincam.org is your best bet, but as said above, no point doing a whole lot, the engine is designed to be a econo box, get a GE of some sort if you want to have some fun.

Or buy a new car.

Modifications such as I/H/E won't yield noticeable results.

Put a spoiler on it.

But srsly, don't waste any money on it because you wont see much result. Just save those pennies and buy something horny when you finish learning.

Out of interest - Is there a reason this thread was kept open and here and the one in the Technical Section, where it should be, was locked?

OT: TinCan is right, it's not meant to be a powerhouse motor, save your pennies for something better.

You could do a basic Cold Air Intake setup with a decent pod on the end, but once again it may sound tougher, however you probably won't notice much difference with a 4A-FE.

It'll still be a hunk of crap in the end that could have made twice the power for half the money by selecting a better base to start with.

Being different doesn't matter when you pour your money down the drain and still get blasted by bogans in stock VNs.

So, in conclusion, again, listen to TinCan.

ok thanks for all the helpful info so far people. i know you are all right, the 4afe is a econmical, reliable engine and not a powerhouse, but i thought just might me able to kick alil more power out of it. i've been doin some research, and found some good news, just want to get some of your feedback on it. I read and was told be quite a few other 4afe owners that some mods could be done to get more power, as much as a stong silvertop 20 valve 4age engine while still being more economical. I will list the mods below:

-get cams that are about 268 degrees
-get cylinder head ported and gassed
-port and polish
-short shifter
-good air induction kit pod filter
-exhaust system
-and a few other little things to get the compression up

let me know what you think about these mods

thanks

Do you realise what all that is going to cost?

Do you realise that your going to throw all hopes of being economical out the window?

Do you realise that the 20v is more economical than the 4afe to start with?

Do you realise that you could do a 100kw 4age conversion for the same cost as the mods listed above?

I wouldnt do anything cept change your plugs lol. $16 dollar mod, possibly new dizzy cap and rotor button.

Instead of wasting cash on extractors, exhaust, etc why not just save and get a 20v. Much better motor.

As something of a general rule:
Back when toyota had 'G' angle and 'F' angle engines in the same car the 'G' was always the only one worth doing much to.

I have a ae92 sedan rolla. I does well for what it is. A heavy-ish sedan that needs a bit of down low torque and fuel economy with reliability and the 4a-fe provides this very well.

But if modding is on the cards I would go straight for a 4age or 4agze as stated or even better: go straight for a lighter, much better handling sports car with these engines - i.e. a aw11 mr2

You don't happen to play a lot of Gran Turismo do you? It's not easy or simple and you don't just get a free lunch as was mentioned it all comes at a high cost and your economy will be shot to shit etc..

Just do the engine swap, 4AFE is for grandmas.

If you really love the car, put a 20V 4AGE methinks. I know you might not want to hear it, but itl b big bucks gettin power out of the FE, and as was stated above, the G series was always the performance series, with F being economy...

RollaBus_INOCNT
Post #34

Get rid of the 4afe man...
Its an 'economical' engine and is a waste...

Rip it out and put either a 20v in her or even a 4agze in there wink.gif

By the time you have done the above mods, you could have put the 20v or gze in...

Luke
Post #35

F = narrow angle heads, designed for economy

G = wide angle heads, designed for performance.

and nis, if you're reading, wide/narrow angle heads DO NOT mean things like 15 degree V6, and 60 degree V6 laugh.gif
