4-1. Maintenance and care Cleaning and protecting the vehicle’s exterior

Perform the following to protect the vehicle and maintain it in prime condition.

l Working from top to bottom, liberally apply water to the vehicle body, wheel wells and underside of the vehicle to remove any dirt and dust. Wash the vehicle body using a sponge or soft cloth, such as a cham- ois.

l For hard-to-remove marks, use car wash soap and rinse thor-

oughly with water.

l Wipe away any water. l Wax the vehicle when the waterproof coating deteriorates.

If water does not bead on a clean surface, apply wax when the vehicle body is cool.

n Automatic car washes

l Fold the mirrors back before washing the vehicle. l Brushes used in automatic car washes may scratch the vehicle surface

and harm your vehicle’s paint.

n High pressure automatic car washes

Do not allow the nozzles of the car wash to come within close proximity of the windows. Before entering an automatic car wash, check that the fuel filler door is closed.

n Aluminum wheels

Remove any dirt immediately by using a neutral detergent. Do not use hard brushes or abrasive cleaners. Do not use strong or harsh chemical cleaners. Use the same mild detergent and wax as used on the paint.

n Bumpers and side moldings

Do not scrub with abrasive cleaners.

346

PRIUS_U_(L/O_0802)

4-1. Maintenance and care

n To prevent paint deterioration and corrosion on the body

l Wash the vehicle immediately in the following cases:

• After driving near the sea coast • After driving on salted roads • If you see coal tar or tree sap on the paint surface • If you see dead insects or insect droppings on the paint • After driving in an area contaminated with soot, oily smoke, mine dust,

iron powder or chemical substances

• If the vehicle becomes heavily soiled in dust or mud • If liquids such as benzine and gasoline are spilled on the paint surface If the paint is chipped or scratched, have it repaired immediately.

CAUTION

n Caution about the exhaust pipe

Exhaust gasses cause the exhaust pipe to become quite hot. When washing the vehicle, be careful not to touch the pipe until it has cooled sufficiently, as touching a hot exhaust pipe can cause burns.

NOTICE

n To protect your vehicle’s painted surfaces

Do not use organic cleaners such as benzine or gasoline.

n Cleaning the exterior lights

only by the floor jack. Always use automotive jack stands or a solid, level, surface.

l Do not start the hybrid system while the vehicle is supported by the floor

jack.

l Stop the vehicle on level firm ground, firmly set the parking brake and push

the “P” position switch.

l Make sure to set the jack properly at the jack point.

Raising the vehicle with an improperly positioned jack will damage the vehicle and may cause the vehicle to fall off the jack.

l Do not raise the vehicle while someone is in the vehicle. l When raising the vehicle, do not place any objects on top of or underneath

the jack.

n Recommended viscosity

SAE 5W-30 is the best choice for good fuel economy, and good starting in cold weather.

*: If SAE 5W-30 oil is not avail- able, SAE 10W-30 oil may be used. However, it should be replaced with SAE 5W-30 at the next oil change.

n How to read oil container labels

The ILSAC (International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee) Certification Mark is added to some oil containers to help you select the oil you should use.

n Engine oil consumption

l The amount of engine oil consumed depends on the oil viscosity, the

quality of the oil and the way the vehicle is driven.

l More oil is consumed under driving conditions such as high speeds, fre-

quent acceleration and deceleration.

l A new engine consumes more oil. l When judging the amount of oil consumption, keep in mind that the oil may have become diluted, making it difficult to judge the true level accu- rately.

l Oil consumption: Max. 1.1 qt./600 miles, 0.9 lmp. qt./600 miles (1.0 L per 1000 km). If the vehicle consumes more than this amount, contact your Toyota dealer.

n Resetting the engine oil maintenance data (U.S.A. only)

Perform the following steps: STEP 1

Turn the “POWER” switch to OFF mode with the trip meter A shown. Turn the “POWER” switch to ON mode with the trip meter reset but- ton (→P. 144) held down. Keep pressing the button for longer than 5 seconds after the “POWER” switch is in ON mode.

STEP 2

STEP 3

When the trip meter A indicates “000000” and the light goes off, the system reset is completed.

CAUTION

n Used engine oil

l Used engine oil contains potentially harmful contaminants which may cause skin disorders such as inflammation or skin cancer, so care should be taken to avoid prolonged and repeated contact. To remove used engine oil from your skin, wash thoroughly with soap and water.

l Dispose of used oil and filters only in a safe and acceptable manner. Do not dispose of used oil and filters in household trash, in sewers or onto the ground. Call your Toyota dealer, service station or auto parts store for information concerning recycling or disposal.

l Do not leave used engine oil within the reach of children.

NOTICE

n To prevent serious engine damage Check the oil level on regular basis.

n When replacing the engine oil

l Be careful not to spill engine oil on the vehicle components. l Avoid overfilling, or the engine could be damaged. l Check the oil level on the dipstick every time you refill the vehicle. l Be sure the engine oil filler cap is properly retightened.
