However, they do not apply to deep tread, winter type snow tires, space- saver or temporary use spare tires, tires with nominal rim diameters of 12 inches or less, or to some limited pro- duction tires. All passenger car tires must conform to Federal Safety Requirements in addition to these grades. (cid:132) Treadwear The treadwear grade is a comparative rating based on the wear rate of the tire when tested under controlled con- ditions on a specified government test course. For example, a tire graded 150 would wear one and one-half (1-1/2) times as well on the government course as a tire graded 100. The relative perfor- mance of tires depends upon the ac- tual conditions of their use, however, and may depart significantly from the norm due to variations in driving hab- its, service practices and differences in road characteristics and climate. (cid:132) Traction AA, A, B, C The traction grades, from highest to lowest, are AA, A, B and C. Those grades represent the tire’s ability to stop on wet pavement as measured under controlled conditions on speci- fied government test surfaces of as- phalt and concrete. A tire marked C may have poor traction performance. The traction grade assigned to this tire is based on straight- ahead braking traction tests, and does not include accelera- tion, cornering, hydroplaning, or peak traction characteristics. (cid:132) Temperature A, B, C The temperature grades are A (the highest), B, and C, representing the tire’s resistance to the generation of heat and its ability to dissipate heat when tested under controlled condi- tions on a specified indoor laboratory test wheel. Sustained high tempera- ture can cause the material of the tire to degenerate and reduce tire life, and excessive temperature can lead to sudden tire failure. The grade C corre- sponds to a level of performance which all passenger car tires must meet under the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards No. 109. Grades B and A represent higher levels of per- formance on the laboratory test wheel than the minimum required by law. Regular unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 87 AKI or high- er may be used. However for optimum engine performance and driveability, it is recommended that you use 91 AKI or higher grade unleaded gasoline. You may experience reduced output, poor ac- celerator response, and reduced fuel economy when using gaso- line with an octane rating lower than 91 AKI, depending on your driving habits and conditions. If you experience any of these con- ditions while using a lower octane rated fuel, you may want to re- turn to using 91 AKI octane rated fuel as soon as possible. Addi- tionally, if your vehicle knocks heavily or persistently, or if you are driving with heavy loads such as when towing a trailer, the use of 91 AKI or higher grade unleaded gasoline is required.
