Changing a wheel and fitting the spare wheel Preparing the vehicle When using an emergency spare wheel or spare wheel of a different size, you must not exceed the maximum speed of 80 km/h.

G WARNING The wheel/tyre dimensions and the tyre type of the spare wheel/emergency spare wheel and the wheel to be replaced may differ. Fit- ting a spare wheel/emergency spare wheel may severely impair the driving characteris- tics. There is a risk of accident. To prevent hazardous situations: RAdapt your driving style accordingly and

drive carefully.

RNever fit more than one spare wheel/emer- gency spare wheel if the dimesions are dif- ferent to those of the wheel being replaced. ROnly use a spare wheel/emergency spare wheel briefly if the dimesions are different to those of the wheel being replaced.

RDo not switch off ESP®. RHave the spare wheel/emergency spare wheel in question replaced at the nearest qualified specialist workshop. Make sure that the wheel/tyre dimensions and tyre type are correct.

i Vehicles without an emergency spare

wheel/spare wheel are not equipped with wheel-changing tools at the factory. For more information on which tools are required to perform a wheel change on your vehicle, e.g. wheel chock, wheel wrench or centring pin, consult a Mercedes-Benz Service Centre.

Securing the vehicle on slight downhill gradients X On downhill gradients: place chocks or other suitable items in front of the wheels of the front and rear axle.

Raising the vehicle G WARNING If you do not position the jack correctly at the appropriate jacking point of the vehicle, the jack could tip over with the vehicle raised. There is a risk of injury. Only position the jack at the appropriate jack- ing point of the vehicle. The base of the jack must be positioned vertically, directly under the jacking point of the vehicle.

The following must be observed when raising the vehicle: Rto raise the vehicle, only use the vehicle-

specific jack that has been tested and approved by Mercedes-Benz. If used incor- rectly, the jack could tip over with the vehi- cle raised.

Rthe jack is designed only to raise and hold the vehicle for a short time while a wheel is being changed. It is not suited for per- forming maintenance work under the vehi- cle.

Ravoid changing the wheel on uphill and

downhill slopes.

Rbefore raising the vehicle, secure it from

rolling away by applying the parking brake

and inserting wheel chocks. Never disen- gage the parking brake while the vehicle is raised.

Rthe jack must be placed on a firm, flat and

non-slip surface. On a loose surface, a large, load-bearing underlay must be used. On a slippery surface, a non-slip underlay must be used, e.g. rubber mats.

Rdo not use wooden blocks or similar

objects as a jack underlay. Otherwise, the jack will not be able to achieve its load- bearing capacity due to the restricted height.

Rmake sure that the distance between the underside of the tyres and the ground does not exceed 3 cm.

Rnever place your hands and feet under the

raised vehicle.

Rnever lie under the raised vehicle. Rnever start the engine when the vehicle is

raised.

Rnever open or close a door or the boot lid

when the vehicle is raised.

Rmake sure that no persons are present in

the vehicle when the vehicle is raised.

X Using wheel wrench :, loosen the bolts on the wheel you wish to change by about one full turn. Do not unscrew the bolts com- pletely.

The jacking points are located just behind the front wheel arches and just in front of the rear wheel arches (arrows).

Removing a wheel

X Unscrew the uppermost wheel bolt com-

pletely.

X Screw centring pin : into the thread

instead of the wheel bolt.

X Unscrew the remaining wheel bolts fully. ! Do not place wheel bolts in sand or dirt. The threads of the wheel bolts and wheel hubs could otherwise be damaged when the bolts are tightened.

X Remove the wheel.

Fitting a new wheel G WARNING Oiled or greased wheel bolts or damaged wheel bolts/hub threads can cause the wheel bolts to come loose. As a result, you could lose a wheel while driving. There is a risk of accident. Never oil or grease wheel bolts. In the event of damage to the threads, contact a qualified specialist workshop immediately. Have the damaged wheel bolts or hub threads replaced/renewed. Do not continue driving. G WARNING If you tighten the wheel bolts or wheel nuts when the vehicle is raised, the jack could tip over. There is a risk of injury. Only tighten the wheel bolts or wheel nuts when the vehicle is on the ground.

X Position jack = at jacking point ;.

X Make sure that the base of the jack is posi-

tioned directly under the jacking point.

X Turn crank ? clockwise until jack = sits

completely on jacking point ; and the base of the jack lies evenly on the ground.

X Turn ratchet ? until the tyre is raised a

maximum of 3 cm off the ground.

Using other wheel bolts when fitting 17", 5-spoke/7-spoke wheels or the "Minispare" emergency spare wheel could damage the brake system.

X Clean the wheel and wheel hub contact

surfaces.

X Slide the emergency spare wheel or the

spare wheel onto the centring pin and push it on.

X Tighten the wheel bolts until they are fin-

ger-tight.

X Unscrew the centring pin. X Tighten the last wheel bolt until it is finger-

tight.

Lowering the vehicle G WARNING Tyre pressure that is too high or too low can lead to a blow-out of the fitted emergency spare wheel/spare wheel, particularly when driving with a heavy load and increasing speed. There is a risk of accident. Check the tyre pressure of the emergency spare wheel or spare wheel and adjust it. When doing so, observe the specified tyre pressure.

X Turn the crank of the jack anti-clockwise

until the vehicle is once again standing firmly on the ground.

X Place the jack to one side.

your vehicle even if there is a total loss of pressure in one or more tyres. MOExtended tyres may only be used in con- junction with an activated tyre pressure loss warning system or with an activated tyre pres- sure monitor. The driving distance possible is 80 km when the vehicle is partially laden, and 30 km when the vehicle is fully laden. In addition to the vehicle load, the driving dis- tance possible depends upon: Rspeed Rroad condition Routside temperature The driving distance possible in run-flat mode may be reduced by extreme driving condi- tions/manoeuvres, or it can be increased through a moderate style of driving. The maximum permissible distance which can be driven in run-flat mode is counted from the moment the tyre pressure loss warning appears in the multifunction display. You must not exceed a maximum speed of 80 km/h. G WARNING When driving in emergency mode, the driving characteristics deteriorate, e.g. when corner- ing, accelerating quickly and when braking. There is a risk of accident. Do not exceed the stated maximum speed. Avoid abrupt steering and driving manoeu- vres, and driving over obstacles (kerbs, pot- holes, off-road). This applies in particular to a laden vehicle. Stop driving in emergency mode if: Ryou hear banging noises. Rthe vehicle starts to shake. Ryou see smoke and smell rubber. RESP® is intervening constantly. Rthere are tears in the sidewalls of the tyre. After driving in emergency mode, have the wheel rims checked at a qualified specialist

G WARNING The wheels could work loose if the wheel nuts and bolts are not tightened to the specified tightening torque. There is a risk of accident. Have the tightening torque immediately checked at a qualified specialist workshop after a wheel is changed.

X Tighten the wheel bolts evenly in a cross-

wise pattern in the sequence indicated (: to A ). The tightening torque must be 150 Nm.

X Turn the jack back to its initial position and store it together with the rest of the tyre- change tool kit in the stowage well under the boot floor.

i When you are driving with the collapsible

emergency spare wheel fitted, the tyre pressure loss warning system or the tyre pressure monitor cannot function reliably. Only restart the tyre pressure loss warning system/tyre pressure monitor when the defective wheel has been replaced with a new wheel. Vehicles with tire pressure control system: all fitted wheels must be equipped with functioning sensors. The defective wheel should no longer be in the vehicle.

workshop with regard to their further use. The faulty tyre must be replaced.

i When replacing one or all tyres, make

sure that you only use tyres marked MOExtended. Also ensure that they are of the specified size for the vehicle.

i Vehicles with MOExtended tyres are not equipped with a TIREFIT kit at the factory. It is therefore recommended that you addi- tionally equip your vehicle with a TIREFIT kit if you fit tyres that do not feature run-flat characteristics, e.g. winter tyres. A TIREFIT kit can be obtained from a qualified spe- cialist workshop.

Battery Important safety notes Work on the battery, e.g. removing or instal- ling, requires specialist knowledge and the use of special tools. Therefore, always have work on the battery carried out at a qualified specialist workshop. G WARNING Hybrid vehicles: ensure that you read the "HYBRID" supplement. You could otherwise fail to recognise dangers. G WARNING Work carried out incorrectly on the battery can, for example, lead to a short circuit and damage your vehicle's electronic system. This can disrupt driving safety systems such as ABS (anti-lock braking system) or ESP® (Elec- tronic Stability Program). RIf ABS malfunctions, the wheels can lock during braking. This limits the steerability of the vehicle when braking and the braking distance may increase. There is a risk of accident.

RIf ESP® malfunctions, the vehicle will not be stabilised if it starts to skid or a wheel starts to spin. There is a risk of accident.

You should therefore have all work involving the battery carried out at a qualified specialist workshop. G WARNING Comply with safety precautions and take pro- tective measures when handling batteries.

Risk of explosion

Fire, naked flames and smoking are prohibited when handling the battery. Avoid creating sparks. Battery acid is caustic. Avoid contact with the skin, eyes or clothing. Wear suitable protective clothing, in particular gloves, an apron and a face mask. Immediately rinse acid splashes off with clean water. Consult a doctor if necessary. Wear eye protection.

Keep children away.

Observe this Owner's Man- ual.

G WARNING For safety reasons, Mercedes-Benz recom- mends that you only use batteries which have been tested and approved for your vehicle by Mercedes-Benz. These batteries provide increased impact protection to prevent vehi- cle occupants from suffering acid burns

should the battery be damaged in the event of an accident. To prevent acid burns, observe the following safety notes when handling batteries: Rdo not lean over the battery. Rdo not place any metal objects on a battery. Otherwise, you could cause a short circuit and the battery's gas mixture could ignite. Rmake sure that you do not create an elec- trostatic charge, e.g. by wearing synthetic clothing or as a result of friction on fabrics. Therefore, you should not pull or slide the battery over carpets or other synthetic materials.

Rnever touch the battery first. To discharge a possible electrostatic charge, step out of the vehicle first and touch the bodywork. Rdo not wipe the battery using a cloth. The battery may explode as a result of electro- static charge or due to flying sparks. H Environmental note

Batteries contain pollutants. It is illegal to dispose of them with the household rubbish. They must be collected sep- arately and disposed of in an environmentally responsible recycling system. Dispose of batteries in an environmentally responsible manner. Take discharged batteries to a qualified spe- cialist workshop or to a col- lection point for used batter- ies.

! Have the battery checked regularly at a

qualified specialist workshop. Observe the service intervals in the Service Booklet or contact a qualified specialist workshop for more information.

! You should have all work involving the

battery carried out at a qualified specialist workshop. In the exceptional case that it is

Battery

necessary for you to disconnect the battery yourself, make sure that: Ryou switch off the engine and remove the

key. On vehicles with KEYLESS-GO, ensure that the ignition is switched off. Check that all the indicator lamps in the instrument cluster are off. Otherwise, electronic components, such as the alternator, may be damaged.

Ryou first remove the negative terminal clamp and then the positive terminal clamp. Never swap the terminal clamps. Otherwise, the vehicle's electronic sys- tem may be damaged.

Rthe transmission is locked in position P after disconnecting the battery. The vehi- cle is secured against rolling away. You can then no longer move the vehicle. The battery and the cover of the positive terminal clamp must be fitted securely dur- ing operation.

In order for the battery to achieve the maxi- mum possible service life, it must always be sufficiently charged. Like other batteries, the vehicle battery may discharge over time if you do not use the vehicle. In such cases, have the battery dis- connected at a qualified specialist workshop. You can also charge the battery with a charger recommended by Mercedes-Benz. For more information, please contact a quali- fied specialist workshop. Have the battery charge checked more fre- quently if you use the vehicle mainly for short trips or if you leave it standing idle for a lengthy period. Consult a qualified specialist workshop if you wish to leave your vehicle parked up for a long period of time. i When you park the vehicle, remove the

key if you do not require any electrical con- sumers. The vehicle will then use very little energy, thus conserving battery power.
