The automatic climate control regulates the temperature and the humidity in the vehicle interior and filters undesirable substances from the air. The automatic climate control is only opera- tional when the engine is running22. Optimum operation is only achieved if you drive with the side windows and sliding sunroof/panorama sliding sunroof closed. You can also set some automatic climate con- trol functions via COMAND (Y page 278). i Ventilate the vehicle for a brief period
during warm weather, e.g. using the con- venience opening feature (Y page 92). This will speed up the cooling process and the desired vehicle interior temperature will be reached more quickly.
i The integrated filter can filter out most
particles of dust and completely filters out
22 The residual heat function can only be activated/deactivated if the ignition is switched off.

Activating/deactivating the cooling with air dehumidification function Important information The cooling with air dehumidification function is only available when the engine is running. The air inside the vehicle is cooled and dehu- midified according to the temperature selec- ted. G WARNING If the "cooling with air dehumidification" func- tion is deactivated, the air inside the vehicle will not be cooled (during warm weather) or dehumidified. The windows could mist up more quickly. This may prevent you from observing the traffic conditions, thereby caus- ing an accident.
Condensation may drip from the underside of the vehicle when THERMOTRONIC is in cool- ing mode. This is normal and not a sign that there is a malfunction. You can activate or deactivate the cooling with air dehumidification function via COMAND (Y page 280). i The cooling with air dehumidification
function uses refrigerant R134a. This cool- ant does not contain chlorofluorocarbons,
and therefore does not damage the ozone layer.
Problems with the cooling with air dehumidification function If you can no longer switch on the cooling with air dehumidification function via COMAND, the cooling with air dehumidification function is switched off due to a malfunction. X Consult a qualified specialist workshop.
Setting climate control to automatic mode In automatic mode, the set temperature is maintained automatically at a constant level. The system automatically regulates the tem- perature of the dispensed air, the airflow and the air distribution. Automatic mode will achieve optimal opera- tion if cooling with air dehumidification is also activated. If desired, cooling with air dehu- midification can be deactivated.

Auxiliary heating Important safety notes G WARNING Exhaust fumes are produced when the auxili- ary heating is in operation. Inhaling these exhaust fumes can be poisonous. You should therefore switch off the auxiliary heating in confined spaces without an extraction sys- tem, e.g. a garage. G WARNING When operating the auxiliary heating parts of the vehicle can get very hot. Make sure that the exhaust system does not under any cir- cumstances come into contact with easily ignitable material such as dry grass or fuels.
Operating the climate control system 313
The material could otherwise ignite and set the vehicle alight. Choose your parking spot accordingly. Operating the auxiliary heating is thus pro- hibited at filling stations or when your vehicle is being refuelled. You must therefore switch off the auxiliary heating at filling stations.
You can use COMAND (Y page 282) or the remote control to specify up to three depar- ture times, one of which may be preselected.
Switching the auxiliary heating/venti- lation on/off using the centre console rocker switch
! Operating the auxiliary heating/ventila- tion draws on the vehicle battery. After you have heated or ventilated the vehicle a maximum of two times, drive for a longer distance.
i Switch on the auxiliary heating regularly,
e.g. for about ten minutes every month.
The auxiliary heating heats the air in the vehi- cle interior to the set temperature without using the heat of the running engine. The aux- iliary heating is operated directly using the vehicle's fuel. For this reason, the tank con- tent must be at least at reserve fuel level to ensure that the auxiliary heating functions. The auxiliary heating/ventilation automati- cally adjusts to changes in temperature and weather conditions. For this reason, the aux- iliary heating could switch from ventilation mode to heating mode or from heating mode to ventilation mode. You cannot use the auxiliary ventilation to cool the vehicle interior to a temperature lower than the outside temperature.
Before switching on X Turn the key to position 2 in the ignition
lock.
X Set the temperature. The auxiliary heating/ventilation can be acti- vated even when the climate control is being controlled manually. Optimum comfort can be attained when the system is set to auto- matic mode. Set the temperature to 22 †. Useful information
i This Owner's Manual describes all models
and all standard and optional equipment available to your vehicle at the time of pub- lication of the Owner's Manual. Country- specific deviations are possible. Please note that your vehicle may not be equipped with all features described. This also applies to safety-relevant systems and functions.
i Please read the information on qualified
specialist workshops (Y page 32).
Running-in notes Important safety notes G WARNING New brake pads/linings only have optimal braking performance after several hundred kilometres. Until then, compensate for this by applying greater force to the brake pedal. This also applies when brake pads/linings or brake discs have been changed.
The first 1,500 km If you treat the engine with sufficient care from the very start, you will be rewarded with excellent performance for the remainder of the engine's life. RDrive at varying vehicle speeds and engine
speeds for the first 1,500 km.
RAvoid overstraining the vehicle during this
period, e.g. driving at full throttle.
RChange gear in good time, before the rev counter needle is Ô of the way to the red area of the rev counter.
RDo not shift down a gear manually in order
to brake.
RTry to avoid depressing the accelerator
pedal beyond the point of resistance (kick- down).
RThe shift ranges 3, 2 or 1 should only be engaged when driving slowly, e.g. when driving in mountainous terrain.
After 1,500 km, you may gradually bring the vehicle up to full road and engine speeds. Additional running-in notes for AMG vehicles: Rdo not drive at speeds above 140 km/h for
the first 1,500 km.
Ronly allow the engine to reach a maximum
engine speed of 4,500 rpm briefly.
i You should also observe these notes on running in if the engine or parts of the drive train on your vehicle have been replaced.
Driving Important safety notes G WARNING Do not place any objects in the driver's foot- well. If you use a floormat or carpet in the driver's footwell, make sure that it is correctly secured and that there is sufficient clearance for the pedals. Do not place several floormats on top of one another. Loose objects or the floormats could other- wise get caught between the pedals if you accelerate or brake suddenly. You will then not be able to brake, declutch or accelerate as intended. This could lead to accidents and injury. G WARNING Do not change down for additional engine braking on a slippery road surface. This could cause the drive wheels to lose their grip and the vehicle could skid. This could cause you to lose control of your vehicle and cause an accident.
Driving 323
! Warm up the engine quickly. Do not use the engine's full performance until it has reached operating temperature. Only set the automatic transmission to the respective drive positions when the vehicle is stationary. Where possible, avoid spinning the drive wheels when pulling away on slippery roads. Otherwise, you could damage the drive train.
! S 63 AMG: at low engine oil temperatures (below +20 †), the maximum engine speed is restricted to protect the engine. To pro- tect the engine and maintain smooth engine operation, avoid driving at full throt- tle when the engine is cold.
KEYLESS-GO General notes Vehicles with KEYLESS-GO are equipped with a key featuring an integrated KEYLESS-GO function and a detachable Start/Stop button. The Start/Stop button must be inserted into the ignition lock and the key must be in the vehicle. Pressing the Start/Stop button several times in succession corresponds to the different key positions in the ignition lock. This is only the case if you are not depressing the brake pedal. If you depress the brake pedal and press the Start/Stop button, the engine starts immedi- ately.
