Towing and tow-starting Important safety notes Observe the legal requirements for the rele- vant countries when towing and tow-starting. G WARNING If the steering wheel lock is engaged, the vehi- cle can no longer be steered. There is a risk of an accident. Always switch on the ignition when towing with a tow rope or a towing bar. G WARNING If the weight of the vehicle to be towed or tow- started is greater than the permissible gross weight of your vehicle: Rthe towing eye could detach itself Rthe vehicle/trailer combination could over-

turn.

There is a risk of an accident. When towing or tow-starting another vehicle, its weight should not be greater than the per- missible gross weight of your vehicle.

Information on your vehicle's gross vehicle weight rating can be found on the vehicle identification plate (Y page 382).

! If DISTRONIC PLUS or the HOLD function is activated, the vehicle brakes automati- cally in certain situations. To prevent dam- age to the vehicle, deactivate DISTRONIC PLUS and the HOLD function in the follow- ing or other similar situations: Rwhen towing the vehicle Rin the car wash

! You may tow the vehicle for a maximum of 50km. A towing speed of 50 km/h must not be exceeded. For towing distances over 50 km, the entire vehicle must be lifted up and transported. ! Only secure the tow rope or towing bar to the towing eyes. The vehicle may otherwise be damaged.

! Do not use the towing eyes for recovery purposes as this could damage the vehicle. If in doubt, recover the vehicle with a crane. ! Pull away smoothly when towing away or tow-starting a vehicle. If the tractive power is too high, the vehicles could be damaged.

! On vehicles with KEYLESS-GO, use the

key instead of the Start/Stop button. Turn the key to position 2 in the ignition lock and shift the automatic transmission to N. Then, turn the key back to 0 and leave it in the ignition lock.

It is better to have the vehicle transported than to have it towed.

electric cables could be overloaded. This may result in a fire. There is a risk of an accident and injury. Always replace faulty fuses with specified new fuses of the correct amperage.

! Only use fuses that have been approved

for Mercedes-Benz vehicles and which have the correct fuse rating for the system concerned. Otherwise, components or sys- tems could be damaged.

The fuses in your vehicle serve to disconnect faulty circuits. If a fuse blows, all the compo- nents on the circuit and their functions will fail. Blown fuses must be replaced with fuses of the same rating, which you can recognise by the colour and fuse rating. The fuse ratings are listed in the fuse allocation chart. If the newly inserted fuse also blows, have the cause traced and rectified at a qualified spe- cialist workshop, e.g. a Mercedes-Benz Service Centre.

Useful information

i This Owner's Manual describes all mod- els, series and optional equipment for your vehicle that were available at the time of going to press. National variations are pos- sible. Note that your vehicle may not be equipped with all of the functions descri- bed. This is also the case for systems and functions relevant to safety.

i Read the information on qualified special-

ist workshops: (Y page 28).

Important safety notes

G WARNING If wheels and tyres of the wrong size are used, the wheel brakes or suspension components may be damaged. There is a risk of an acci- dent. Always replace wheels and tyres with those that fulfil the specifications of the original part. When replacing wheels, make sure to fit the correct: Rdesignation Rtype When replacing tyres, make sure to fit the correct: Rdesignation Rmanufacturer Rtype G WARNING A flat tyre severely impairs the driving, steer- ing and braking characteristics of the vehicle. There is a risk of accident. Tyres without run-flat characteristics: Rdo not drive with a flat tyre. Rimmediately replace the flat tyre with your emergency spare wheel or spare wheel, or consult a qualified specialist workshop.

Tyres with run-flat characteristics: Rpay attention to the information and warn-

ing notices on MOExtended tyres (tyres with run-flat characteristics).

Accessories that are not approved for your vehicle by Mercedes-Benz or that are not being used correctly can impair operating safety. Before purchasing and using non-approved accessories, visit a qualified specialist work- shop and enquire about: Rsuitability Rlegal stipulations Rfactory recommendations Information on the dimensions and types of wheels and tyres for your vehicle can be found in the "Wheel/tyre combinations" sec- tion (Y page 372). Information on air pressure for the tyres on your vehicle can be found: Ron the tyre pressure label on the fuel filler

flap

Rin the "Tyre pressure" section Modification work on the brake system and wheels is not permitted, nor is the use of spacer plates or brake dust shields. This inva- lidates the general operating permit for the vehicle. Modification work on the brake system and wheels is not permitted. The use of wheel spacers or brake dust shields is not permit- ted. This invalidates the general operating permit for the vehicle. i Further information on wheels and tyres can be obtained at any qualified specialist workshop.

Operation Information on driving RCheck the tyre pressures when the vehicle is heavily laden and, if necessary, adjust. RWhile driving, pay attention to vibrations, noises and unusual handling characteris- tics, e.g. pulling to one side. This may indi- cate that the wheels or tyres are damaged. If you suspect that a tyre is defective, reduce your speed immediately. Stop the vehicle as soon as possible to check the wheels and tyres for damage. Hidden tyre damage could also be causing the unusual handling characteristics. If you find no signs of damage, have the tyres and wheels checked at a qualified specialist workshop. RWhen parking your vehicle, make sure that the tyres do not get deformed by the kerb or other obstacles. If it is necessary to drive over kerbs, speed humps or similar eleva- tions, try to do so at an obtuse angle. Oth- erwise, the tyres, particularly the sidewalls, can get damaged.

Regular checking of wheels and tyres G WARNING Damaged tyres can cause tyre inflation pres- sure loss. As a result, you could lose control of your vehicle. There is a risk of accident. Check the tyres regularly for signs of damage and replace any damaged tyres immediately.

RRegularly check the wheels and tyres of your vehicle for damage at least once a month, as well as after driving off-road or on rough roads. Damaged wheels can

Operation 359

cause a loss of tyre pressure. Pay particular attention to damage such as: - cuts in the tyres - punctures - bulges on tyres - deformation or severe corrosion on

tears in the tyres

wheels

RRegularly check the tyre tread depth and the condition of the tread across the whole width of the tyre (Y page 359). If neces- sary, turn the front wheels to full lock in order to inspect the inner side of the tyre surface.

RAll wheels must have a valve cap to protect the valve against dirt and moisture. Do not fit anything onto the valve other than the standard valve cap or other valve caps approved by Mercedes-Benz for your vehi- cle. Do not fit any other valve caps or sys- tems, e.g. tyre pressure monitoring sys- tems.

RRegularly check the pressure of all the tyres including the emergency spare wheel or the spare wheel, particularly prior to long trips, and correct the pressure as necessary (Y page 361).

Observe the notes on the emergency spare wheel (Y page 374). The service life of tyres depends on various factors, including the following: RDriving style RTyre pressure RMileage

Important safety notes on the tyre tread G WARNING Insufficient tyre tread will reduce tyre trac- tion. The tyre is no longer able to dissipate water. This means that on wet road surfaces, the risk of aquaplaning increases, in particular

360 Winter operation

where speed is not adapted to suit the driving conditions. There is a risk of accident. If the tyre pressure is too high or too low, tyres may exhibit different levels of wear at differ- ent locations on the tyre tread. Thus, you should regularly check the tread depth and the condition of the tread across the entire width of all tyres. Minimum tyre tread depth for: Rsummer tyres: 3 mm RM+S tyres: 4 mm For safety reasons, replace the tyres before the legally prescribed limit for the minimum tyre tread depth is reached..

Selecting, fitting and replacing tyres ROnly fit tyres and wheels of the same type

and make.

ROnly fit tyres of the correct size onto the

wheels.

RAfter fitting new tyres, run them in at mod- erate speeds for the first 100 km, as they only reach their full performance after this distance.

RDo not drive with tyres which have too little

tread depth, as this significantly reduces the traction on wet roads (aquaplaning).

RReplace the tyres after six years at the lat-

est, regardless of wear.

Observe the notes on the emergency spare wheel (Y page 374).

Winter operation Points to remember Have your vehicle winterproofed at a qualified specialist workshop at the onset of winter. Observe the notes in the "Changing a wheel" section (Y page 367).

Driving with summer tyres At temperatures below +7 †, summer tyres lose elasticity and therefore traction and braking power. Change the tyres on your vehi- cle to M+S tyres. Using summer tyres at very cold temperatures could cause tears to form, thereby damaging the tyres permanently. Mercedes-Benz cannot accept responsibility for this type of damage.

M+S tyres G WARNING M+S tyres with a tyre tread depth of less than 4 mm are not suitable for use in winter as they do not provide sufficient traction. There is a risk of accident. M+S tyres with a tread depth of less than 4 mm must be replaced.

At temperatures below +7 †, use winter tyres or all-season tyres. Both types of tyre are identified by the M+S marking. Only winter tyres bearing the i snowflake symbol in addition to the M+S marking pro- vide the best possible grip in wintry road con- ditions. Only these tyres will allow driving safety systems such as ABS and ESP® to function optimally in winter. These tyres have been developed specifically for driving in snow. Use M+S tyres of the same make and tread on all wheels to maintain safe handling char- acteristics. Always observe the maximum permissible speed specified for the M+S tyres you have fitted. If you fit M+S tyres that have a lower maxi- mum permissible speed than that of the vehi- cle, affix an appropriate warning sign in the driver's field of vision. This can be obtained at a qualified specialist workshop. Under these circumstances, you should also restrict the maximum speed of the vehicle using permanent SPEEDTRONIC so that it

does not exceed the maximum permissible speed for the M+S tyres(Y page 187). If you have fitted M+S tyres: X Check the tyre pressures (Y page 361). X Restart the tyre pressure loss warning sys-

tem (Y page 363).

For more information on driving with the emergency spare wheel, see (Y page 374).

Snow chains G WARNING If you have fitted snow chains to the front wheels, they may scrape against the vehicle body or chassis components. This could cause damage to the vehicle or the tyres. There is a risk of an accident. To avoid hazardous situations: Rnever fit snow chains on the front wheels Rfit snow chains to the rear wheels in pairs.

! Vehicles with steel wheels: if you wish

to fit snow chains to steel wheels, make sure that you remove the respective wheels' hubcaps first. The hubcaps may otherwise be damaged.

For safety reasons, Mercedes-Benz recom- mends that you only use snow chains that have been specially approved for your vehicle by Mercedes-Benz, or that are of a corre- sponding standard of quality. If you intend to fit snow chains, please bear the following points in mind: Rsnow chains cannot be fitted to all wheel- tyre combinations. Permissible wheel-tyre combinations (Y page 372).

Ronly use snow chains when the road sur- face is completely snow-covered. Remove the snow chains as soon as possible when you come to a road that is not snow-cov- ered.

Tyre pressure 361

Rlocal regulations may restrict the use of

snow chains. Observe the appropriate reg- ulations if you wish to fit snow chains.

Rdo not exceed the maximum permissible

speed of 50 km/h.

i You may wish to deactivate

ESP®(Y page 71) when pulling away with snow chains fitted. This way you can allow the wheels to spin in a controlled manner, achieving an increased driving force (cut- ting action).

For more information on driving with the emergency spare wheel, see (Y page 374).

Tyre pressure Tyre pressure specifications G WARNING Underinflated or overinflated tyres pose the following risks: Rthe tyres may burst, especially as the load

and vehicle speed increase.

Rthe tyres may wear excessively and/or unevenly, which may greatly impair tyre traction.

Rthe driving characteristics, as well as steer- ing and braking, may be greatly impaired.

There is a risk of an accident. Observe the recommended tyre pressure and check the tyre pressure of all the tyres includ- ing the spare wheel: Rat least every two weeks Rwhen the load changes Rbefore embarking on a longer journey Rfor changed operating conditions, e.g. off-

road driving

If necessary, correct the tyre pressure.

You will find a table of tyre pressures for var- ious operating conditions on the inside of your vehicle's fuel filler flap. Operation with an emergency spare wheel: (Y page 372).

362 Tyre pressure

Operation with a trailer: the applicable value for the rear tyres is the maximum tyre pressure value stated in the table inside the fuel filler flap. The table inside the fuel filler flap may state tyre pressures for different load conditions. These are defined in the table as different numbers of passengers and amounts of lug- gage. The actual number of seats may vary; for more information, please refer to the vehi- cle's registration documents. The tyre pressures specified on the fuel filler flap apply to all tyres approved for this vehi- cle, if not stated otherwise.

If a tyre size precedes a tyre pressure, the following tyre pressure information is only valid for that tyre size. Use a suitable pressure gauge to check the tyre pressure. The outer appearance of a tyre does not permit any reliable conclusion about the tyre pressure. You can also check the tyre pressure using the on-board computer. G WARNING If you fit unsuitable accessories onto tyre valves, the tyre valves may be overloaded and malfunction, which can cause tyre pressure loss. Due to their design, retrofitted tyre pres- sure monitors keep the tyre valve open. This can also result in tyre pressure loss. There is a risk of accident. Only screw standard valve caps or valve caps specifically provided by Mercedes-Benz for your vehicle onto the tyre valve.

G WARNING If the tyre pressure drops repeatedly, the wheel, valve or tyre may be damaged. Tyre pressure that is too low may result in a tyre blow-out. There is a risk of accident. RCheck the tyre for foreign objects. RCheck whether the wheel is losing air or the

valve is leaking.

If you are unable to rectify the damage, con- tact a qualified specialist workshop.

If possible, only correct tyre pressures when the tyres are cold. The tyres are cold: Rif the vehicle has been parked with the tyres

out of direct sunlight for at least three hours and

Rif the vehicle has not been driven further

than 1.6 km

Depending on the ambient temperature, the speed at which you are driving and the load on the tyres, the tyre temperature and thus the tyre pressure change by approximately 10 kPa per 10 † (0.1 bar/1.5 psi). Take this into account when checking the pressure of warm tyres and only correct it if it is too low for the current operating conditions. Driving with tyre pressure that is too high or too low can: Rshorten the service life of the tyres Rcause increased tyre damage Rhave a negative effect on handling charac-

teristics and thus the driving safety (e.g. aquaplaning)

i The tyre pressure values given for low

loads are minimum values which offer you good ride comfort characteristics. However, you can also use the values given for higher loads. These are permissible and will not adversely affect the running of the vehicle.

The values on the tyre pressure information label (fuel filler flap) for the vehicle in "parti- ally laden" and "fully laden" conditions apply when driving at maximum speed. Despite the values stated on the tyre pressure informa- tion label, for the vehicle with "partially laden up to 210 km/h" status, the values can be reduced as follows, without a reduc- tion in safety: RÒ30 kPa (Ò0.3 bar/Ò4 psi) for all models This does not apply to vehicles towing a trailer. This improves the ride comfort of your vehi- cle; however, the fuel consumption may increase slightly. H Environmental note Check the tyre pressure regularly, at least every 14 days.

Tyre pressure loss warning system General notes While the vehicle is in motion, the tyre pres- sure loss warning system monitors the set tyre pressure using the rotational speed of the wheels. This enables the system to detect significant pressure loss in a tyre. If the speed of rotation of a wheel changes as a result of a loss of pressure, a corresponding warning message will appear in the multifunction dis- play. You can recognise the tyre pressure loss warning by the Run Flat Indicator active Restart with OK message which appears in the Service menu of the multi- function display. Information on the message display can be found in the "Restarting the tyre pressure loss warning system" section (Y page 363).

Important safety notes The tyre pressure warning system does not warn you of an incorrectly set tyre pressure.

Tyre pressure 363

Observe the notes on the recommended tyre pressure (Y page 361). The tyre pressure loss warning does not replace the need to regularly check the tyre pressures. An even loss of pressure on sev- eral tyres at the same time cannot be detec- ted by the tyre pressure loss warning system. The tyre pressure monitor is not able to warn you of a sudden loss of pressure, e.g. if the tyre is penetrated by a foreign object. In the event of a sudden loss of pressure, bring the vehicle to a halt by braking carefully. Avoid abrupt steering manoeuvres. The function of the tyre pressure loss warning system is limited or delayed if: Rsnow chains are fitted to your vehicle's

tyres.

Rroad conditions are wintry. Ryou are driving on sand or gravel. Ryou adopt a very sporty driving style (cor- nering at high speeds or driving with high rates of acceleration).

Ryou are towing a very heavy or large trailer. Ryou are driving with a heavy load (in the

vehicle or on the roof).

Restarting the tyre pressure loss warn- ing system Restart the tyre pressure loss warning system if you have: Rchanged the tyre pressure Rchanged the wheels or tyres Rfitted new wheels or tyres X Before restarting, consult the table of tyre pressures on the inside of the fuel filler flap to ensure that the tyre pressure in all four tyres is set correctly for the respective operating conditions. The tyre pressure loss warning system can only give reliable warnings if you have set the correct tyre pressure. If an incorrect

364 Tyre pressure

tyre pressure is set, these incorrect values will be monitored.

The tyre pressure values stored at the last restart will continue to be monitored.

Tyre pressure monitor General notes If a tyre pressure monitor system is fitted, the vehicle's wheels have sensors fitted that monitor the tyre pressures in all four tyres. The tyre pressure monitor warns you if the pressure drops in one or more of the tyres. The tyre pressure monitor only functions if the corresponding sensors are fitted to all wheels. Information on tyre pressures is shown in the multifunction display. After a few minutes of driving, the current tyre pressure of each tyre is shown in the Service menu of the multi- function display.

Tyre pressure 365

nificantly too low. The tyre pressure moni- tor is not malfunctioning.

Rif the warning lamp flashes for around a

minute and then remains lit constantly, the tyre pressure monitor is malfunctioning. i In addition to the warning lamp, a mes- sage appears in the multifunction display. Further information can be found on: RVehicles with a 4-button multifunction

steering wheel: (Y page 288).

RVehicles with a 12-button multifunction

steering wheel: (Y page 289).

If the tyre pressure monitor is malfunctioning, it may take more than ten minutes for the tyre pressure warning lamp to inform you of the malfunction by flashing for approximately one minute and then remaining lit. When the fault has been rectified, the tyre pressure warning lamp goes out after you have driven for a few minutes. The tyre pressure values indicated by the on- board computer may differ from those meas- ured at a filling station using a pressure gauge. The tyre pressures shown by the on- board computer refer to those measured at sea level. At high altitudes, the tyre pressure values indicated by a pressure gauge are higher than those shown by the on-board computer. In this case, do not reduce the tyre pressures. The operation of the tyre pressure monitor can be affected by interference from radio transmitting equipment (e.g. radio head- phones, two-way radios) that may be being operated in or near the vehicle.

Checking the tyre pressure electroni- cally X Make sure that the key is in position 2 in

the ignition lock (Y page 155). X Press the = or ; button on the steer- ing wheel to select the Service menu.

Example: current tyre pressure display For further information on displaying this message, refer to the "Checking the tyre pres- sure electronically" section (Y page 365).

Important safety notes It is the driver's responsibility to set the tyre pressure to the recommended cold tyre pres- sure suitable for the operating situation (Y page 361). Note that the correct tyre pres- sure for the current operating situation must first be taught-in to the tyre pressure monitor. If there is a substantial loss of pressure, the warning threshold for the warning message is aligned to the reference values taught-in. Restart the tyre pressure monitor after adjusting to the cold tyre pressure (Y page 366). The current pressures are saved as new reference values. This will ensure that a warning message will only appear if the tyre pressure drops significantly. The tyre pressure monitor does not warn you of an incorrectly set tyre pressure. Observe the notes on the recommended tyre pressure (Y page 361). The tyre pressure monitor is not able to warn you of a sudden loss of pressure, e.g. if the tyre is penetrated by a foreign object. In the event of a sudden loss of pressure, bring the vehicle to a halt by braking carefully. Avoid sudden steering movements. The tyre pressure monitor has a yellow warn- ing lamp in the instrument cluster for indicat- ing a pressure loss or malfunction. Depending on how the warning lamp flashes or lights up, a tyre pressure that is too low or a malfunc- tion in the tyre pressure monitor is indicated: Rif the warning lamp is lit continuously, the tyre pressure on one or more tyres is sig-

366 Tyre pressure

X Press the 9 or : button to select Tyre pressure. X Press the a button.

The current tyre pressure for each wheel will be displayed in the multifunction dis- play. If the vehicle has been parked for over 20 minutes, the Tyre pressures will be displayed after a few minutes of driving message appears. After a teach-in period, the tyre pressure monitor automatically recognises new wheels or new sensors. As long as a clear allocation of the tyre pressure values to the individual wheels is not possible, the Tyre pressure monitor active display mes- sage is shown instead of the tyre pressure display. The tyre pressures are already being monitored. i If a spare wheel/emergency spare wheel is fitted, for a few minutes the system may continue to show the tyre pressure of the wheel that has been removed. If this occurs, the value displayed for the position where the spare wheel/emergency spare wheel is fitted is not the same as the spare wheel/emergency spare wheel's current tyre pressure.

Warning messages of the tyre pressure monitor If the tyre pressure monitor detects a pres- sure loss in one or more tyres, a warning mes- sage is shown in the multifunction display and the yellow tyre pressure monitor warning light comes on. RIf the Please correct tyre pressure message appears in the multifunction dis- play, the tyre pressure in at least one tyre is too low and must be corrected at the next opportunity. RIf the Check tyre(s) message appears in the multifunction display, the tyre pressure

in one or more tyres has dropped signifi- cantly and the tyres must be checked. RIf the Tyre malfunction appears in the multifunction display, the tyre pressure in one or more tyres has dropped suddenly and the tyres must be checked.

Observe the instructions and safety notes in the display messages in the "Tyres" section (Y page 289). i If the wheel positions on the vehicle are interchanged, the tyre pressures may be displayed for the wrong positions for a short time. This is rectified after a few minutes of driving and the tyre pressures are displayed for the correct positions.

Restarting the tyre pressure monitor When you restart the tyre pressure monitor, all existing warning messages are deleted and the warning lamps go out. The monitor uses the currently set tyre pressures as the refer- ence values for monitoring. In most cases, the tyre pressure monitor will automatically detect the new reference values after you have changed the tyre pressure. However, you can also define reference values man- ually as described here. The tyre pressure monitor then monitors the new tyre pressure values. i You will find an overview of the menus on

(Y page 241).

X Use the table on the inside of the fuel filler flap to ensure that the tyre pressure is set correctly in all four tyres for the current operating conditions. Also observe the notes in the section on tyre pressures (Y page 361).

X Make sure that the key is in position 2 in

the ignition lock. X Press the = or ; button on the steer- ing wheel to select the Service menu. X Press the 9 or : button to select Tyre pressure.

X Press the a button.

The multifunction display shows the cur- rent tyre pressure for the individual tyres or the Tyre pressures will be dis‐ played after a few minutes of driv‐ ing message. X Press the : button. The Use current pressures as new reference values message appears in the multifunction display.

If you wish to confirm the restart: X Press the a button. The Tyre press. monitor restarted message appears in the multifunction dis- play. After you have driven for a few minutes, the system checks whether the current tyre pressures are within the specified range. The new tyre pressures are then accepted as reference values and monitored.

If you wish to cancel the restart: X Press the % button.

The tyre pressure values stored at the last restart will continue to be monitored.

Changing a wheel Flat tyre You can find information on what to do in the event of flat tyre in the "Flat tyre" section (Y page 342). Vehicles with an emergency spare wheel: in the event of a flat tyre, the emer- gency spare wheel is fitted according to the description under "Fitting a wheel" (Y page 368).

Interchanging the wheels G WARNING Interchanging the front and rear wheels may severely impair the driving characteristics if the wheels or tyres have different dimensions. The wheel brakes or suspension components may also be damaged. There is a risk of acci- dent. Interchange front and rear wheels only if the wheels and tyres are of the same dimensions.

Interchanging the front and rear wheels of differing dimensions can render the general operating permit invalid. Observe the instructions and safety notes in the "Fitting a wheel" section (Y page 368).

368 Fitting a wheel

The wear patterns on the front and rear tyres differ, depending on the operating conditions. Interchange the wheels before a clear wear pattern has formed on the tyres. Front tyres typically wear more on the shoulders and the rear tyres in the centre. On vehicles that have the same size front and rear wheels, you can interchange the wheels every 5,000 to 10,000 km depending on the degree of tyre wear. Ensure the direction of rotation is maintained. Clean the contact surfaces of the wheel and the brake disc thoroughly every time a wheel is interchanged. Check the tyre pressure and, if necessary, restart the tyre pressure loss warning system.

Direction of rotation Tyres with a specified direction of rotation have additional benefits, e.g. if there is a risk of aquaplaning. You will only gain these ben- efits if the correct direction of rotation is observed. An arrow on the sidewall of the tyre indicates its correct direction of rotation.

Storing wheels Store wheels in a cool, dry and preferably dark place if they are not being used. Protect the tyres against oil, grease, petrol and diesel.

Cleaning the wheels G WARNING The water jet of circular-jet nozzles (dirt grind- ers) can cause damage not visible from the outside to tyres or chassis components. Com- ponents damaged in this way can unexpect- edly fail. There is a risk of an accident. Do not use high-pressure cleaners with circu- lar-jet nozzles to clean the vehicle. Have dam- aged tyres or chassis components replaced immediately.

Fitting a wheel Preparing the vehicle X Stop the vehicle on solid, non-slippery and

level ground.

X Apply the parking brake. X Move the front wheels to the straight-

ahead position.

X Vehicles with manual transmission:

depress the clutch pedal fully and engage first or reverse gear.

X Vehicles with automatic transmission:

move the selector lever to P.

X Switch off the engine. X Vehicles without KEYLESS-GO: remove

the key from the ignition lock.

X Vehicles with KEYLESS-GO: open the

driver's do or. The on-board electronics have status 0, which is the same as the key having been removed.

X Vehicles with KEYLESS-GO: remove the Start/Stop button from the ignition lock (Y page 155).

X If a trailer is coupled to the vehicle, uncou-

ple it.

X If included in the vehicle equipment,

remove the tyre-change tool kit from the vehicle.

X Secure the vehicle to prevent it from rolling

away.

i Apart from some country-specific var-

iants, vehicles are not equipped with tyre- changing tools. Some tools for changing a wheel are specific to the vehicle. For more information on which tools are required to perform a wheel change on your vehicle, consult a qualified specialist workshop. Necessary wheel-changing tools can include, for example: RJack RWheel chock

RWheel wrench RCentring pin

Securing the vehicle against rolling away

If your vehicle is equipped with a wheel chock, it can be found in the tyre-change tool kit (Y page 341). The folding wheel chock is an additional securing measure to prevent the vehicle from rolling away, for example when changing a wheel. X Fold both plates upwards :. X Fold out lower plate ;. X Guide the lugs on the lower plate fully into

the openings in base plate =.

Securing the vehicle on level ground X On level ground: place chocks or other suitable items under the front and rear of the wheel that is diagonally opposite the wheel you wish to change.

Securing the vehicle on slight downhill gradients X On light downhill gradients: place

chocks or other suitable items in front of the wheels of the front and rear axle.

Raising the vehicle G WARNING If you do not position the jack correctly at the appropriate jacking point of the vehicle, the jack could tip over with the vehicle raised. There is a risk of injury. Only position the jack at the appropriate jack- ing point of the vehicle. The base of the jack must be positioned vertically, directly under the jacking point of the vehicle.

The following must be observed when raising the vehicle: Rto raise the vehicle, only use the vehicle-

specific jack that has been tested and approved by Mercedes-Benz. If the jack is used incorrectly, it could tip over while the vehicle is raised.

Rthe jack is designed only to raise and hold the vehicle for a short time while a wheel is being changed. It is not suited for per- forming maintenance work under the vehi- cle.

Ravoid changing the wheel on uphill and

downhill slopes.

Rbefore raising the vehicle, secure it from

rolling away by applying the parking brake and positioning wheel chocks. Never

release the parking brake while the vehicle is raised.

Rthe jack must be placed on a firm, flat and

non-slip surface. On a loose surface, a large, load-bearing underlay must be used. On a slippery surface, a non-slip underlay must be used, e.g. rubber mats.

Rdo not use wooden blocks or similar

objects as a jack underlay. Otherwise, the jack will not be able to achieve its load- bearing capacity due to the restricted height.

Rmake sure that the distance between the underside of the tyres and the ground does not exceed 3 cm.

Rnever place your hands or feet under the

raised vehicle.

Rnever lie under the raised vehicle. Rnever start the engine when the vehicle is

raised.

Rnever open or close a door or the tailgate

when the vehicle is raised.

Rmake sure that no persons are present in

the vehicle when the vehicle is raised.

X Using wheel wrench :, loosen the bolts on the wheel you wish to change by about one full turn. Do not unscrew the bolts com- pletely.

The jacking points are located just behind the front wheel arches and just in front of the rear wheel arches (arrows). X Take the ratchet ring spanner out of the

vehicle tool kit and place it on the hexagon nut of the jack so that the letters AUF are visible.

X Position jack = at jacking point ;.

X Turn ratchet ring spanner ? until jack = sits completely on jacking point ; and the base of the jack lies evenly on the ground. X Turn ratchet ring spanner ? until the tyre

is raised a maximum of 3 cm from the ground.

Removing a wheel ! Do not place wheel bolts in sand or dirt. The threads of the wheel bolts and wheel hubs could otherwise be damaged when the bolts are tightened.

X Unscrew the wheel bolts. X Remove the wheel.

Fitting a new wheel G WARNING Oiled or greased wheel bolts or damaged wheel bolts/hub threads can cause the wheel bolts to come loose. As a result, you could lose a wheel while driving. There is a risk of accident. Never oil or grease wheel bolts. In the event of damage to the threads, contact a qualified specialist workshop immediately. Have the damaged wheel bolts or hub threads replaced/renewed. Do not continue driving. G WARNING If you tighten the wheel bolts or wheel nuts when the vehicle is raised, the jack could tip over. There is a risk of injury. Only tighten the wheel bolts or wheel nuts when the vehicle is on the ground.

Always pay attention to the instructions and safety notices in "Changing a wheel" (Y page 367). Only use wheel bolts that have been designed for the wheel and the vehicle. For safety rea- sons, Mercedes-Benz recommends that you only use wheel bolts which have been

approved for Mercedes-Benz vehicles and the respective wheel.

: Wheel bolts for all wheels supplied by the

factory

; Wheel bolts for the "Minispare" emer-

gency spare wheel

! Always use wheel bolts ; to fit the col-

lapsible emergency spare wheel. Using other wheel bolts to fit the collapsible emergency spare wheel could damage the brake system.

Be sure to use the original-length wheel bolts when refitting the original wheel after it has been repaired.

X Clean the wheel and wheel hub contact

surfaces.

X Place the new wheel on the wheel hub and

push it on.

X Tighten the wheel bolts until they are fin-

ger-tight.

X Inflate the collapsible emergency spare

wheel (Y page 375). Only then lower the vehicle.

372 Wheel and tyre combinations

Lowering the vehicle G WARNING The wheels could work loose if the wheel nuts and bolts are not tightened to the specified tightening torque. There is a risk of accident. Have the tightening torque immediately checked at a qualified specialist workshop after a wheel is changed.

! Inflate the collapsible emergency spare wheel using the tyre inflation compressor before lowering the vehicle. The wheel rim could otherwise be damaged.

Observe the recommended tyre pressure (Y page 361).

For further information on stowing the col- lapsible emergency spare wheel, see (Y page 376).

Wheel and tyre combinations General notes ! For safety reasons, Mercedes-Benz rec-

ommends that you only use tyres and wheels which have been approved by Mercedes-Benz specifically for your vehi- cle. These are specially adapted to the control systems, such as ABS or ESP® and are marked as follows: RMO = Mercedes-Benz Original RMOE = Mercedes-Benz Original Extended (tyres featuring run-flat characteristics) RMO1 = Mercedes-Benz Original (only cer-

tain AMG tyres)

X Place the ratchet ring spanner onto the

hexagon nut of the jack so that the letters AB are visible.

X Turn the ratchet ring spanner until the vehi-

cle is once again standing firmly on the ground.

X Place the jack to one side. X Tighten the wheel bolts evenly in a cross-

wise pattern in the sequence indicated (: to A). The tightening torque must be 150 Nm.

X Turn the jack back to its initial position and store it together with the rest of the tyre- change tool kit in the luggage compart- ment.

X Transport the faulty wheel in the luggage

compartment.

X Check the air pressure of the newly fitted

wheel and adjust accordingly.

Mercedes-Benz Original Extended tyres may only be used on wheels that have been specifically approved by Mercedes-Benz. Only use tyres, wheels or accessories tes- ted and approved by Mercedes-Benz. Cer- tain characteristics, e.g. handling, vehicle noise emissions or fuel consumption, may otherwise be adversely affected. In addi- tion, when driving with a load, tyre dimen- sion variations could cause the tyres to come into contact with the bodywork and axle components. This could result in dam- age to the tyres or the vehicle. Mercedes-Benz accepts no liability for damage resulting from the use of tyres, wheels or accessories other than those tes- ted and approved. Further information about wheels, tyres and approved combinations can be obtained from any qualified specialist workshop.

Wheel and tyre combinations

373

i Not all wheel/tyre combinations can be

fitted at the factory in all countries.

! Retreaded tyres are neither tested nor recommended by Mercedes-Benz, since previous damage cannot always be detec- ted on retreaded tyres. As a result, Mercedes-Benz cannot guarantee vehicle safety if retreaded tyres are fitted. Do not fit used tyres if you have no information about their previous usage.

! Large wheels: the lower the section width for a certain wheel size, the lower the ride comfort is on poor road surfaces. Roll com- fort and suspension comfort are reduced and the risk of damage to the wheels and tyres as a result of driving over obstacles increases.

i You will find a table of tyre pressures on the inside of your vehicle's fuel filler flap. For further information on tyre pressure, see (Y page 361). Check tyre pressures regularly and only when the tyres are cold. i Notes on the vehicle equipment – always
