왘 Install the breather hose.


The battery, its filler caps and the vent tube must always be securely installed when the vehicle is in operation.


The following procedures must be car- ried out following any interruption of battery power (e.g. due to reconnec- tion): 앫 Set the clock (see COMAND


operator’s manual).


앫 Resynchronize the front seat head restraints and seat adjustment fore, aft (컄 page 102).


앫 Synchronize the ESP (컄 page 300).

Practical hints Jump starting


Warning!


Failure to follow these directions will cause damage to the electronic components, and can lead to a battery explosion and severe injury or death.


Never lean over batteries while connecting or jump starting, you might get injured.


Battery fluid contains sulfuric acid. Do not allow this fluid to come in contact with eyes, skin or clothing. In case it does, immediately flush affected area with water, and seek medical help if necessary.


A battery will also produce hydrogen gas, which is flammable and very explosive. Keep flames or sparks away from battery, avoid improper connection of jumper cables, smoking, etc.


Attempting to jump start a frozen battery can result in it exploding, causing personal injury.


Read all instructions before proceeding.


If the battery is discharged, the engine can be started with jumper cables and the bat- tery of another vehicle. Observe the following: 앫 Jump starting should only be performed when the engine and catalytic convert- er are cold.


앫 Do not start the engine if the battery is


frozen. Let the battery thaw out first. 앫 Only use 12 volt battery to jump start your vehicle. Jump starting with a more powerful battery could damage the ve- hicle’s electrical system, which will not be covered by the Mercedes-Benz Limited Warranty.


앫 Use only jumper cables with sufficient


cross-section and insulated terminal clamps.


앫 Always make sure the jumper cables


are not on or near pulleys, fans, or other parts that move when an engine is started or running.


Avoid repeated and lengthy starting at- tempts. Do not attempt to start the engine us- ing a battery quick charge unit. If engine does not run after several un- successful starting attempts, have it checked at the nearest authorized Mercedes-Benz Light Truck Center. Excessive unburned fuel generated by repeated failed starting attempts may damage the catalytic converter and may present a fire risk. Make sure the jumper cables do not have loose or missing insulation. Make sure the cable clamps do not touch any other metal part while the other end is still attached to a battery.


Do not tow-start the vehicle.

Observe all safety instructions and precau- tions when handling automotive batteries (컄 page 351).


The jump-start contacts are located in the engine compartment. 왘 Make sure the two vehicles do not


touch.


왘 Turn off all electrical consumers. 왘 Apply parking brake. 왘 Shift gear selector lever to position P.

왘 Connect the positive terminals 2 of the batteries with the jumper cable. Clamp cable to charged battery first. 왘 Start engine of the vehicle with the


charged battery and run at idle speed. 왘 Connect negative terminals 3 of the batteries with the jumper cable. Clamp cable to charged battery first.


왘 Start the engine of the disabled


vehicle.


Now you can again turn on the electrical consumers. Do not turn on the lights under any circumstances. 왘 Remove the jumper cables first from negative terminals 3 of the batteries and then from positive terminals 2.


You can now turn on the lights. 왘 Have the battery checked at the


nearest authorized Mercedes-Benz Light Truck Center.

Practical hints Towing the vehicle


Mercedes-Benz recommends that the vehi- cle be transported with all wheels off the ground using flatbed or appropriate wheel lift/dolly equipment. This method is pref- erable to other types of towing.


Use flatbed or wheel lift/dolly equip- ment, with SmartKey in starter switch turned to position 0. Do not tow with sling-type equipment. Towing with sling-type equipment over bumpy roads will damage radiator and supports. To prevent damage during transport, do not tie down vehicle by its chassis or suspension parts. Use the towing eyes. Switch off the ESP (컄 page 86), tow-away alarm (컄 page 89) and the automatic central locking (컄 page 141).


When circumstances do not permit the recommended towing methods, the vehi- cle may be towed with all wheels on the

ground only so far as necessary to have the vehicle moved to a safe location where the recommended towing methods can be em- ployed.


When towing the vehicle with all wheels on the ground, the gear selector lever must be in position N and the SmartKey must be in starter switch position 2. When towing the vehicle with all wheels on the ground, the vehicle may be towed only for distances up to 30 miles (50 km) and at a speed not to exceed 30 mph (50 km/h). If the vehicle is towed with one axle raised (observe instructions regarding flexible drive shaft and propeller shafts), the engine must be shut off (SmartKey in starter switch position 1). Otherwise, the 4-ETS may become en- gaged which may cause loss of towing control.


Do not tow-start the vehicle.


Warning!


Prior to towing the vehicle with all wheels on the ground, make sure the SmartKey is in starter switch position 2.


If the SmartKey is left in the starter switch position 0 for an extended period of time, it can no longer be turned in the switch. In this case, the steering is locked. To unlock, re- move SmartKey from starter switch and re- insert.


Always tow with a tow bar if: 앫 the engine will not run 앫 there is a malfunction in the power sup- ply or in the vehicle’s electrical system as that will be necessary to adequately con- trol the towed vehicle.


i To signal turns while being towed with hazard warning flasher in use, turn SmartKey in starter switch to position 2 and activate combination switch for left or right turn signal in usual manner – only the selected turn signal will operate. Upon canceling the turn signal, the hazard warning flasher will operate again.


Warning!


With the engine not running, there is no power assistance for the brake and steering systems. In this case, it is important to keep in mind that a considerably higher degree of effort is necessary to brake and steer the ve- hicle. Adapt your driving accordingly.


The gear selector lever will remain locked in position P and the SmartKey will not turn in the starter switch if the battery is disconnected or discharged. For more information, see “Battery” (컄 page 351) and “Jump starting” (컄 page 354). For information on manually unlocking transmission gear selector lever, see (컄 page 327).


Practical hints Towing the vehicle


When towing the vehicle with all wheels on the ground, note the following: With the automatic central locking acti- vated and the SmartKey in starter switch position 2, the vehicle doors lock if the wheels are turning at vehicle speeds of approx. 9 mph (15 km/h) or more. To prevent the vehicle doors from lock- ing, deactivate the automatic central locking (컄 page 141). Towing of the vehicle should only be done using the towing eye. Never at- tach tow cable, tow rope or tow rod to vehicle chassis, frame or suspension parts.

왘 To avoid damaging the vehicle, it should only be tied down on the wheels/wheel rims, not on chassis components such as the transverse link or trailing arm.

In case of transfer case damage or for towing vehicle distances exceeding 30 miles (50 km) The propeller shafts to the drive axles must be removed.


In case of front axle damage Raise the front axle when towing. The pro- peller shaft between the rear axle and the transfer case must be removed.


In case of rear axle damage When the rear axle is raised, the vehicle can only be towed with a wheel lift or a dol- ly placed under its front wheels.


Towing the vehicle - various problem scenarios


When removing drive shaft, place M10 nuts on bolts as distance sleeves and tighten using M8 nuts. Always install new self-locking nuts when reinstalling the drive shaft.

Freeing a stranded vehicle, on which the wheels are dug into sand or mud, should be done with the greatest of care, especial- ly if the vehicle is heavily loaded. Avoid pulling the vehicle jerkily or diago- nally, since it could result in damage to the chassis alignment. Never try to free a vehicle that is still cou- pled to a trailer. If possible, a vehicle equipped with trailer hitch receiver should be pulled backward in its own previously made tracks.

Practical hints Fuses


Only install fuses that have been tested and approved by Mercedes-Benz and that have the specified amperage rat- ing. Never attempt to repair or bridge a blown fuse. Have the cause determined and remedied by an authorized Mercedes-Benz Light Truck Center.

When reinstalling front passenger seat track stops, place end stops in correct position. For your safety, maintain proper spacing 2.


Warning!


Do not drive the vehicle when the front end stops are not correctly installed. Failure to reinstall stops as indicated may result in se- rious injury in certain frontal crashes.


Adjust the front passenger seat as far as possible rearward from the dashboard when the seat is occupied. Comply with informa- tion on occupant safety (컄 page 62).


We recommend having the fuses changed at a Mercedes-Benz Light Truck Center.

왔 Rims and tires Use only tires and rims which have been specifically developed for your vehicle and tested and approved by Mercedes-Benz. Other tires and rims can have detrimental effects, such as: 앫 Poor handling characteristics 앫 Increased noise 앫 Increased fuel consumption


Moreover, tires and rims not approved by Mercedes-Benz may, under load, exhibit dimensional variations and dif- ferent tire deformation characteristics that could cause them to come into contact with the vehicle body or axle parts. Damage to the tires or the vehi- cle may be the result.

Further information on tires and rims is available at any authorized Mercedes-Benz Light Truck Center. A placard with the recommended tire inflation pressures is located on the driver’s door B-pillar. Some vehicles may have supplemental tire inflation pressure information for driving at high speeds (컄 page 258) or for vehicle loads less than the maximum loaded vehicle condition. If such information is provided, it can be found on the placard located on the inside of the fuel filler flap. The tire inflation pressure should be checked regularly and should only be adjusted on cold tires. Follow tire manufacturer’s maintenance recom- mendation included with vehicle.

Engine oils


Engine oils are specifically tested for their suitability in our engines and durability for our service intervals. Therefore, only use approved engine oils and oil filters re- quired for vehicles with Maintenance System (U.S. vehicles) or FSS (Canada vehicles). For a listing of approved engine oils and oil filters, refer to the Factory Approved Service Products pamphlet, or contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz Light Truck Center.


Using engine oils and oil filters of specifica- tion other than those expressly required for the Maintenance System (U.S. vehi- cles) or FSS (Canada vehicles), or changing of oil and oil filter at change intervals longer than those called for by the Maintenance System (U.S. vehicles) or FSS (Canada vehicles) will result in engine damage not covered by the Mercedes-Benz Limited Warranty.


Please follow Maintenance System (U.S. vehicles) or FSS (Canada vehicles) recom- mendations for scheduled oil changes. Failure to do so will result in engine dam- age not covered by the Mercedes-Benz Limited Warranty.

Brake fluid


Premium unleaded gasoline


Do not blend oil additives with engine oil. They may damage the engine. Damage or malfunctions resulting from blending oil additives are not covered by the Mercedes-Benz Limited Warranty.


Air conditioning refrigerant


R-134a (HFC) refrigerant and special PAG lubricating oil are used in the air condition- ing system. Never use R-12 (CFC) or mineral-based lubricating oil. Otherwise damage to the system will occur.


During vehicle operation, the boiling point of the brake fluid is continuously reduced through the absorption of moisture from the atmosphere. Under extremely strenu- ous operating conditions, this moisture content can lead to the formation of bub- bles in the system, thus reducing the sys- tem’s efficiency. Therefore, the brake fluid must be replaced every two years, prefera- bly in the spring. Only brake fluid approved by Mercedes-Benz is recommended. Your authorized Mercedes-Benz Light Truck Center will provide you with additional in- formation.


To maintain the engine’s durability and performance, premium unleaded gaso- line must be used. If premium unleaded is not available and low octane fuel is used, follow these precautions: 앫 Have the fuel tank only partially


filled with unleaded regular and fill up with premium unleaded as soon as possible.


앫 Avoid full throttle driving and abrupt


acceleration.


앫 Do not exceed an engine speed of 3000 rpm if the vehicle is loaded with a light load such as two per- sons and no luggage.


앫 Do not exceed 2/3 of maximum ac- celerator pedal position if the vehi- cle is fully loaded or operating in mountainous terrain.

Fuel requirements


Gasoline additives


Only use premium unleaded fuel: 앫 The octane number (posted at the


pump) must be 91 min. It is an average of both the Research (R) octane num- ber and the Motor (M) octane number: (R+M)/2). This is also known as the ANTI-KNOCK INDEX.


Unleaded gasoline containing oxygenates such as ethanol, IPA, IBA and TBA can be used provided the ratio of any one of these oxygenates to gasoline does not exceed 10%; MTBE must not exceed 15%. The ratio of methanol to gasoline must not exceed 3% plus additional cosolvents. Using mixtures of ethanol and methanol is not allowed. Gasohol, which contains 10% ethanol and 90% unleaded gasoline, can be used. These blends must also meet all other fuel requirements, such as resistance to spark knock, boiling range, vapor pressure, etc.


A major concern among engine manufac- turers is carbon build-up caused by gaso- line. Mercedes-Benz recommends only the use of quality gasoline containing additives that prevent the build-up of carbon deposits. After an extended period of using fuels without such additives, carbon deposits can build up especially on the intake valves and in the combustion area, leading to engine performance problems such as: 앫 Warm-up hesitation 앫 Unstable idle 앫 Knocking/pinging 앫 Misfire 앫 Power loss

In areas where carbon deposits may be en- countered due to lack of availability of gas- olines which contain these additives, Mercedes-Benz recommends the use of additives approved by us for use on Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Refer to Factory Approved Service Products pamphlet for a listing of approved product(s). Follow directions on product label. Do not blend other specific fuel additives with fuel. This only results in unnecessary cost and may be harmful to the engine operation. Damage or malfunction resulting from poor fuel quality or from blending addition- al fuel additives other than those tested and approved by us for use on Mercedes-Benz vehicles listed in the Factory Approved Service Products pamphlet are not covered by the Mercedes-Benz Limited Warranty.

Coolants


The engine coolant is a mixture of water and anticorrosion/antifreeze, which pro- vides: 앫 Corrosion protection 앫 Freeze protection 앫 Boiling protection (by increasing the


boiling point)


The cooling system was filled at the factory with a coolant providing freeze protection to approximately -35°F (-37°C) and corro- sion protection. If the antifreeze mixture is effective to -22°F (-30°C), the boiling point of the cool- ant in the pressurized cooling system is reached at approximately 266°F (130°C). The coolant solution must be used year round to provide the necessary corrosion protection and increase boil-over protec- tion. Refer to Maintenance Booklet for replacement interval.

If the coolant level is low, water and MB anticorrosion/antifreeze should be used to bring it up to the proper level (have cool- ing system checked for signs of leakage). Please make sure the mixture is in accor- dance with label instructions. The water in the cooling system must meet minimum requirements, which are usually satisfied by normal drinking water. If you are not sure about the water quality, con- sult an authorized Mercedes-Benz Light Truck Center.


Coolant system design and coolant used determine the replacement interval. The replacement interval published in the Maintenance Booklet is only applicable if MB 325.0 anticorrosion/antifreeze solu- tion or other Mercedes-Benz approved products of equal specification (see Factory Approved Service Products pamphlet) are used to renew the coolant concentration or bring it back up to the proper level. To provide important corrosion protection, the solution must be at least 45% anticor- rosion/antifreeze (equivalent to freeze protection to approx. - 22°F [-30°C]). If you use a solution that is more than 55% anticorrosion/antifreeze (freeze protec- tion to approx. - 49°F [-45°C]), the engine temperature will increase due to the lower heat transfer capability of the solution. Therefore, do not use more than this amount of anticorrosion/antifreeze.

Anticorrosion/antifreeze


Your vehicle contains a number of alumi- num parts. The use of aluminum compo- nents in motor vehicle engines necessitates that anticorrosion/antifreeze coolant used in such engines be specifical- ly formulated to protect the aluminum


parts. (Failure to use such anticorro- sion/antifreeze coolant will result in a significantly shortened service life.) Therefore, the following product is strongly recommended for use in your vehicle: Mercedes-Benz 325.0 anticorrosion/anti- freeze agent.


Before the start of the winter season (or once a year in hot southern regions), you should have the anticorrosion/antifreeze concentration checked. The coolant is also regularly checked each time you bring your vehicle to an authorized Mercedes-Benz Light Truck Center for service.

Windshield/rear window washer sys- tem and headlamp cleaning system


Warning!


Washer solvent/antifreeze is highly flamma- ble. Do not spill washer solvent/antifreeze on hot engine parts, because it may ignite and burn. You could be seriously burned.


The windshield washer reservoir is located in the engine compartment on the front passenger side. It holds approximately 5.3 US qt (5.0 l). The headlamp cleaning system is also supplied from the wind- shield washer reservoir. 왘 Refill the reservoir with MB Windshield Washer Concentrate “S” to and water (or concentrate and commercially available premixed windshield washer solvent/antifreeze, depending on am- bient temperatures) (컄 page 380).
