Brake pad thickness must be visually inspected at the intervals specified in the Service Booklet. 308 Display Key Check battery! Key not recognized! ì Function Not available! Possible cause The batteries in the KEYLESS-GO* key are discharged. The KEYLESS-GO* key is not recog- nized while the engine is running be- cause 앫 the card is not in the vehicle 앫 there is strong radio-frequency interference The KEYLESS-GO* key is momen- tarily not recognized. This display appears if button ì or í on the multifunction steer- ing wheel is pressed and the vehicle is not equipped with a telephone. Practical hints What to do if … Suggested solution 왘 Change the batteries (컄 page 328). 왘 Stop the vehicle as soon as it is safe to do so. 왘 Search for the card or continue to operate the vehicle with the key. The KEYLESS-GO* system is mal- functioning. This display appears (for a maximum of 60 seconds) if the driver’s door is opened with the engine shut off and no key in the starter switch. This message is only a reminder. Seat, mirrors and steering wheel have not yet moved to their preset driving positions. Release park. brake! You are driving with the parking brake set. Suggested solution 왘 Take the key out of the vehicle. 왘 Visit an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center as soon as possible. 왘 Insert key in the starter switch. 왘 Wait until the seat, mirrors and steering wheel have moved to their driving positions. Ê Trunk open! 310 Display Ï Washer fluid Check level Coolant Check level Possible cause The fluid level has dropped to about 1/3 of total reservoir capacity. The coolant level is too low. Practical hints What to do if … Suggested solution 왘 Add washer fluid (컄 page 267). 왘 Add coolant (컄 page 264). 왘 If you have to add coolant frequently, have the cooling system checked by an autho- rized Mercedes-Benz Center. 왘 Observe the coolant temperature display. 왘 Have the fan replaced as soon as possible. Warning! Do not spill antifreeze on hot engine parts. Antifreeze contains ethylene glycol which may burn if it comes into contact with hot engine parts. You can be seriously burned. Do not ignore the low engine coolant level warning. Extended driving with the message and symbol displayed may cause serious engine damage not covered by the Mercedes-Benz Limited Warranty. Do not drive without sufficient amount of coolant in the cooling system. The engine will overheat causing major en- gine damage. 311 Practical hints What to do if … Display Ï Coolant Stop, engine off! Possible cause The coolant is too hot. The poly-V-belt could be broken. Suggested solution 왘 Stop the vehicle. 왘 Only start the engine again after the mes- sage disappears. You could otherwise dam- age the engine. 왘 Stop immediately and check the poly-V-belt. 왘 If it is broken, do not drive any further. Notify an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center. If it is in order, drive immediately to the nearest authorized Mercedes-Benz Cen- ter. Warning! Driving when your engine is badly overheat- ed can cause some fluids which may have leaked into the engine compartment to catch fire. You could be seriously burned. Steam from an overheated engine can cause serious burns and can occur just by opening the engine hood. Stay away from the engine if you see or hear steam coming from it. Turn off the engine, get out of the vehicle and do not stand near the vehicle until it cools down. The engine should not be oper- ated with the coolant temperature above 266°F (130°C). First aid kit The first aid kit is in the storage compart- ment at the front edge of the front passen- ger seat. Spare wheel The spare wheel is located under the trunk floor. 왘 Lift the trunk floor and engage the han- dle in the upper edge of trunk. 왘 Remove the luggage box (컄 page 325). The dimensions of the Minispare* wheel are different from those of the road wheels. As a result, the vehicle handling characteristics change when driving with a Minispare* wheel mounted. The spare wheel should only be used tempo- rarily, and replaced with a regular road wheel as quick as possible. In the case of a flat tire, you may tempo- rarily use the Minispare* wheel when ob- serving the following restrictions: 앫 Do not exceed a vehicle speed of 50 mph (80km/h). 앫 Drive to the nearest tire repair facility to have the flat tire repaired or re- placed as appropriate. 앫 Do not operate vehicle with more than one spare wheel mounted. Remove luggage box 1 Fastening clip 2 Luggage box 왘 Turn fastening clips 1 to the left up- wards from fastening bolts. 왘 Lift luggage box in the area of the fas- tening bolts and remove it from trunk. 왘 Insert luggage box into trunk so that fastening clips are in line with fastening bolts. 왘 Push front edge of luggage box in direc- tion of arrow under cover of trunk sill. 왘 Press fastening clips onto fastening bolts until they lock into place. 325 Practical hints Where will I find ...? Vehicle tool kit The vehicle tool kit is located in the storage tray on top of the spare wheel (컄 page 324). The following is included: 앫 Vehicle tool kit 앫 Towing eye bolt 앫 Wheel wrench 앫 Alignment bolt 앫 Vehicle jack 앫 Special fuse extractor 앫 Spare fuses 326 Unlocking/locking in an emergency Unlocking the vehicle In case of a malfunction in the central lock- ing system, you can unlock the trunk sepa- rately (컄 page 88). Unlocking the driver’s door If you are unable to unlock the driver’s door using the SmartKey, open the door using the mechanical key. 1 Mechanical key locking tab 2 Mechanical key 왘 Move locking tab 1 in the direction of the arrow and slide mechanical key 2 out of the housing. 3 Unlocking 4 Locking 왘 Unlock the door with the mechanical key. If necessary, push them down manually. 왘 Lock the driver’s door with the me- chanical key (컄 page 327). 왘 Check if the trunk is locked. If neces- sary lock the trunk with the mechanical key (컄 page 98). If the batteries in the SmartKey are dis- charged, the vehicle can no longer be locked or unlocked. It is recommended to have the batteries replaced at an autho- rized Mercedes-Benz Center. Warning! Keep the batteries out of reach of children. If a battery is swallowed, seek medical help immediately. Batteries contain materials that can harm the environment if disposed of improperly. Recycling of batteries is the preferred method of disposal. Many states require sellers of batteries to accept old batteries for recycling. Unlocking the trunk The trunk can no longer be locked with the key. Lock and unlock the trunk with the me- chanical key as follows: Trunk lid lock 1 Unlocking 2 Locking 왘 Insert the mechanical key in the trunk lid lock. 왘 Turn the key to the left in position 1 and hold it in this position. 왘 Pull on the trunk lid handle and lift the trunk lid. 328 Practical hints Unlocking/locking in an emergency When changing batteries, always re- place both batteries. The required replacement batteries are available at any authorized Mercedes-Benz Center. SmartKey/SmartKey with KEY- LESS-GO* 왘 Remove mechanical key 1 (컄 page 327). 왘 Insert the mechanical key in the side opening and push the gray slide. Battery compartment 2 is unlatched. 왘 Pull battery compartment 2 out of the key housing in direction of arrow. 왘 Remove the batteries. 왘 Using a lint-free cloth, insert new bat- teries under the contact spring with the plus (+) side facing up. 왘 Return battery compartment into hous- ing until it locks into place. In the case of power failure, the transmis- sion selector lever can be manually un- locked, e.g. to tow the vehicle. 왘 Take out the cup holder*. Using two fingers in the horizontal slot at the upper rear side of the cup holder, lift cup holder upwards to remove. 왘 Hold the cover at a 45° angle. 왘 Insert a suitable object 1 (e.g. a pin) through the hole and press the pin downward. 왘 Remove pin 1. The selector lever is locked again when moving it to position P. 1 Pin The selector lever can be manually un- locked from position P in the event of an electrical failure, e.g. to tow the vehicle. 330 Opening/closing in an emergency Sliding/pop-up roof* or panorama sliding/pop-up roof* You can open or close the sliding/pop-up roof manually should an electrical malfunc- tion occur. The sliding/pop-up roof drive is located behind lens 1 of the interior overhead light. 1 Screen 왘 Fold screen 1 down. It is there- fore essential that all bulbs and lamp as- semblies are in good working order at all times. Correct headlamp adjustment is extremely important. Have headlamps checked and readjusted at regular intervals and when a bulb has been replaced. See your autho- rized Mercedes-Benz Center for headlamp adjustment. Backup bulbs will be brought into use when the following lamps malfunction: 앫 Standing lamps 앫 Tail lamps 332 Front lamps Lamp 1 Additional turn sig- nal lamps 2 Turn signal lamp 3 Side marker lamp 4 Low beam 5 High beam Parking and stand- ing lamps 6 Fog lamp Type LED 1156 NA W 5 W H7 (55 W) Bi-Xenon*1 D2S-35 W H7 (55 W) W 5 W HB4/9006 (55 W) 1 Vehicles with Bi-Xenon headlamps*: Low beam and high beam use the same D2S-35W lamp. For safety reasons (high voltage), do not replace the Bi-Xenon bulb yourself. See your authorized Mer- cedes-Benz Center. Rear lamps Lamp 7 High mounted brake lamp Type LED 8 Tail, parking and HiP standing lamp 9 License plate lamps C 5 W Notes on bulb replacement Warning! Keep bulbs out of reach of children. Bulbs and bulb sockets can be very hot. Al- low the lamp to cool down before changing a bulb. Halogen lamps contain pressurized gas. A bulb can explode if you: 앫 touch or move it when hot 앫 drop the bulb 앫 scratch the bulb Wear eye and hand protection. Because of high voltage in Bi-Xenon lamps, it is dangerous to replace the bulb or repair the lamp and its components. We recom- mend that you have such work done by a qualified technician. High beam bulb (Bi-Xenon* headlamps only) Warning! Because of high voltage in Bi-Xenon lamps, it is dangerous to replace the bulb or repair the lamp and its components. We recom- mend that you have such work done by a qualified technician. 왘 Switch off the lights. 왘 Open the hood (컄 page 261). 왘 Press the clamp and remove headlamp cover. 왘 Pull electrical connector off. 왘 Turn the locking mechanism counter- clockwise and take out the high beam bulb 2. 왘 Insert the new high beam bulb so that the base is in the recess of the holder. 왘 Turn the locking mechanism clockwise. 왘 Plug the connector onto the high beam bulb. 왘 Align headlamp cover and click into place. Practical hints Replacing bulbs Side marker lamp bulb 왘 Switch off the lights. 왘 Carefully slide lamp towards front. 왘 Remove rear end first. 왘 Twist bulb socket counterclockwise and pull out. 왘 Pull bulb out of the bulb socket. 왘 Insert new bulb in socket. 왘 Reinstall bulb socket, push in and twist clockwise. 왘 To reinstall lamp, set rear end in bumper and let front end snap into place. 335 Practical hints Replacing bulbs To prevent scratches, we recommend that you have the sidemarker bulb re- placed by an authorized Mer- cedes-Benz Center. Replacing bulbs for rear lamps Tail lamp assemblies The tail lamps are equipped with HiP bulbs. Warning! The bulbs in the tail lamps cannot be re- placed individually. The tail lamp bulbs are under pressure and could explode during an attempt to replace them. If the tail lamps are malfunctioning, have them exchanged at an authorized Mer- cedes-Benz Center. 336 License plate lamp 1 Screw 왘 Switch off the lights. 왘 Loosen both screws 1 and remove lamp. 왘 Replace the tubular lamp and reinstall lamp. 왘 Retighten the screws. Replacing wiper blades Replacing wiper blades To avoid damage to the hood, the wiper arms should only be folded forward when in the vertical position. Removal 왘 Turn key in starter switch to position 1. 왘 Turn combination switch to wiper setting II (컄 page 47). 왘 With wiper arm in the vertical position (see above), turn key in starter switch to position 0. Warning! For safety reasons, remove key from starter switch before replacing a wiper blade, other- wise the motor could suddenly turn on and cause injury. 왘 Fold the wiper arm forward. Practical hints Replacing wiper blades You should hear it snap into place. 왘 Turn the wiper blade at a right angle to Installation 왘 Slide wiper blade onto wiper arm until wiper arm. it locks in place. 왘 Slide the wiper blade sideways out of the retainer. 왘 Rotate wiper blade into position paral- lel to wiper arm. 왘 Fold wiper arm back so that blade rests on windshield. Never open the hood when the wiper arm is folded forward. Do not allow the wiper arms to contact the windshield glass without a wiper blade inserted. For your convenience, we recommend that you have this work carried out by an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center. 337 Practical hints Flat tire Flat tire Preparing the vehicle 왘 Park the vehicle as far as possible from moving traffic on a hard surface. 왘 Turn on the hazard warning flashers. 왘 Engage the steering wheel lock in the straight-ahead position and set the parking brake. 왘 Move the selector lever to P. 왘 Have any passenger exit the vehicle at a safe distance from the roadway. 338 Mounting the spare wheel Preparing the vehicle Prepare the vehicle as described under "Preparing the vehicle" on this page. 왘 Take the spare wheel out of the trunk (컄 page 324). Lifting the vehicle 왘 Prevent the vehicle from rolling away by blocking wheels with wheel chocks (not included) or other sizable objects. When changing wheel on a level surface: 왘 Place one chock in front of and one be- hind the wheel that is diagonally oppo- site to the wheel being changed. When changing wheel on a hill: 왘 Place chocks on the downhill side blocking both wheels of the other axle. 왘 Take the two-piece wheel wrench and the jack out of the trunk (컄 page 326). Assemble wheel wrench. Warning! The jack is designed exclusively for jacking up the vehicle at the jack take-up brackets built into either side of the vehicle. To help avoid personal injury, use the jack only to lift the vehicle during a wheel change. Never get beneath the vehicle while it is supported by the jack. Keep hands and feet away from the area under the lifted vehicle. Always firmly set parking brake and block wheels before raising vehicle with jack. Do not disengage parking brake while the vehicle is raised. Be certain that the jack is Practical hints Flat tire always vertical (plumb line) when in use, es- pecially on hills. Always try to use the jack on level surface. Be sure that the jack arm is fully seated in the jack take-up bracket. Al- ways lower the vehicle onto sufficient ca- pacity jackstands before working under the vehicle. 왘 On wheel to be changed, loosen but do not yet remove the wheel bolts (ap- proximately one full turn with wrench). The jack take-up brackets are located di- rectly behind the front wheel housing and in front of the rear wheel housing. 1 Jack take-up bracket 2 Jack 3 Crank 왘 Position jack 2 on firm ground under the respective jack take-up bracket 1. Make sure that the foot of the jack is di- rectly under the take-up bracket so that it is always vertical (plumb-line) as seen from the side, even if the vehicle is parked on an incline 왘 Turn crank 3 until the tire is a maxi- mum of 1.2 in (3 cm) off the ground. Never start engine while vehicle is raised. 339 Mounting the Minispare wheel 왘 Clean contact surfaces of wheel and wheel hub. 왘 Guide the spare wheel onto the align- ment bolt and push it on. 왘 Insert wheel bolts and tighten them slightly. To avoid paint damage, place wheel flat against hub and hold it there while in- stalling first wheel bolt. Practical hints Flat tire Warning! Removing the wheel Position the jack only on the jack take-up brackets designed for this purpose. If the jack is not properly positioned, the ve- hicle may slip off of the jack. Warning! The jack is intended only for lifting the vehi- cle briefly for wheel changes. It is not suited for performing maintenance work under the vehicle. Never lie down under the raised ve- hicle. Do not start the engine when the vehi- cle is raised. 340 1 Alignment bolt 왘 Unscrew the upper-most wheel bolt and remove. 왘 Replace this wheel bolt with alignment bolt 1 supplied in the tool kit. 왘 Remove the remaining bolts. Do not place wheel bolts in sand or dirt. This could result in damage to the bolt and wheel hub threads. 왘 Remove the wheel. Practical hints Flat tire Warning! Warning! Warning! Use only genuine equipment Mercedes-Benz wheel bolts. They are identi- fied by the Mercedes star. Other wheel bolts may come loose. Do not tighten the wheel bolts when the ve- hicle is raised. Otherwise the vehicle could tip over. Always replace wheel bolts that are dam- aged or rusted. Never apply oil or grease to wheel bolts. Damaged wheel hub threads should be re- paired immediately. Do not continue to drive under these circumstances! Contact an au- thorized Mercedes-Benz Center or call Roadside Assistance. Incorrect mounting bolts or improperly tightened mounting bolts can cause the wheel to come off. This could cause an acci- dent. Be sure to use the correct mounting bolts. 왘 Unscrew the alignment bolt, install last wheel bolt and tighten slightly. The dimensions of the Minispare* wheel are different from those of the road wheels. As a result, the vehicle handling characteristics change when driving with a Minispare* wheel mounted. The spare wheel should only be used tempo- rarily, and replaced with a regular road wheel as quick as possible. In the case of a flat tire, you may tempo- rarily use the Minispare* wheel when ob- serving the following restrictions: 앫 Do not exceed a vehicle speed of 50 mph (80km/h). 앫 Drive to the nearest tire repair facility to have the flat tire repaired or re- placed as appropriate. 앫 Do not operate vehicle with more than one spare wheel mounted. 341 Practical hints Flat tire Lowering the vehicle 왘 Lower vehicle by turning crank coun- terclockwise until vehicle is resting ful- ly on its own weight. 왘 Remove the jack. 1 - 5 Wheel bolts 왘 Tighten the five wheel bolts evenly, fol- lowing the diagonal sequence illustrat- ed (1 to 5), until all bolts are tight. Observe a tightening torque of 96 ft lb (130 Nm). 342 Warning! Have the tightening torque checked after changing a wheel. The wheels could come loose if they are not tightened to a torque of 96 ft lb (130 Nm). 왘 Before storing the jack in the trunk, it should be fully collapsed. Wrap the faulty wheel in the protective film that comes with the spare wheel and put the wheel in the trunk. You can also place the faulty wheel down into the spare wheel well. In this case, you must stow the holder from the spare wheel well in the trunk. Do not activate the tire inflation pres- sure monitor until the depressurized tire is no longer in the vehicle. The main battery is in the trunk under the luggage box. Remove the luggage box (컄 page 325). Batteries Your vehicle is equipped with two batter- ies: 앫 Auxiliary battery (back-up battery; en- ables vehicle to shut down electrical systems in a controlled manner should the main battery fail; auxiliary battery is located in the engine compartment) 앫 The main battery (battery for starter and electrical consumers; located in the trunk). Main battery in trunk 1 Negative terminal 2 Positive terminal Warning! Jump starting must only be done using the main battery in the trunk. Practical hints Batteries Warning! Failure to follow these instructions can re- sult in severe injury or death. Never lean over batteries while connecting, you might get injured. Battery fluid contains sulfuric acid. Do not allow this fluid to come in contact with eyes, skin or clothing. In case it does, immediately flush affected area with water and seek medical help if necessary. A battery will also produce hydrogen gas, which is flammable and explosive. Keep flames or sparks away from battery, avoid improper connection of jumper cables, smoking etc. 343 Practical hints Batteries Never loosen or detach battery termi- nal clamps while the engine is running or the key is in the starter switch. Oth- erwise the alternator and other elec- tronic components could be severely damaged. Have the battery checked regularly by an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center. Contact your authorized Mercedes-Benz Center for further infor- mation. Warning! Do not place metal objects on the battery as this could result in a short circuit. Use leak-proof battery only to avoid the risk of acid burns in the event of an accident. 344 Warning! 왘 Remove cover 2 from the positive ter- minal. With a disconnected battery 앫 the brake boosting effect is not avail- able. You need more power to brake and brake pedal travel is increased. If neces- sary, you must depress the brake pedal with full power. 앫 you can no longer turn the ignition key or, in cars with KEYLESS-GO*, pressing the KEY-LESS-GO button* on the gear selector lever has no effect. 앫 the gear selector lever is locked in position P. Disconnecting the battery 왘 Depress the parking brake firmly or move the gear selector lever to position P. 왘 Open the trunk (컄 page 261). 왘 Disconnect battery negative lead 1. 왘 Disconnect the battery positive lead. Removing the battery 왘 Remove the screw-nuts securing the battery. 왘 Remove the battery bracket. 왘 Take out the battery. Charging and reinstalling the battery 왘 Charge battery in accordance with the instructions of the battery charger manufacturer. 왘 Reinstall the charged battery. Follow the previously described steps in re- verse order. Warning! Never charge a battery while still installed in the vehicle. Gases may escape during charg- ing and cause explosions that may result in paint damage, corrosion or personal injury. Reconnecting the batteries 왘 Turn off all electrical consumers. 왘 Connect the positive lead and fasten its cover. 왘 Connect the negative lead. NEVER invert the terminal connections! The battery, its filler caps and the vent tube must always be securely installed when the vehicle is in operation. Practical hints Batteries The following procedures must be car- ried out following any interruption of battery power (e.g. due to reconnec- tion): 앫 Set the clock (컄 page 136) (vehi- cles with COMAND*: see COMAND operator’s manual). Batteries contain materials that can harm the environment if disposed of improperly. Large 12-volt storage batteries contain lead. Recycling of batteries is the preferred method of disposal. Many states require sellers of batteries to accept old batteries for recycling. 앫 Resynchronize the front seat head restraints (컄 page 104). 앫 Resynchronize the ESP (컄 page 75). 앫 Re-enter the radio code (see radio operating instructions). 앫 Resynchronize the side windows (컄 page 186). 앫 Resynchronize the sliding/pop-up roof* (컄 page 189). 345 Practical hints Jump starting Jump starting Warning! Failure to follow these directions will cause damage to the electronic components, and can lead to a battery explosion and severe injury or death. Never lean over batteries while connecting or jump starting, you might get injured. Battery fluid contains sulfuric acid. Do not allow this fluid to come in contact with eyes, skin or clothing. In case it does, immediately flush affected area with water, and seek medical help if necessary. A battery will also produce hydrogen gas, which is flammable and very explosive. Keep flames or sparks away from battery, avoid improper connection of jumper cables, smoking etc. Read all instructions before proceeding. 346 If the battery is discharged, the engine can be started with jumper cables and the bat- tery of another vehicle. Observe the follow- ing: 앫 Jump starting should only be performed when the engine and catalytic convert- er are cold. 앫 Do not start the engine if the battery is frozen. Let the battery thaw out first. 앫 Only jump start from batteries with the same voltage rating. 앫 Use only jumper cables with sufficient cross-section, insulated terminal clamps and polarity reversal protec- tion. Jumper cables with polarity reversal protection are available at any autho- rized Mercedes-Benz Center. Jump starting may only be performed on the main battery installed in the trunk. Avoid repeated and lengthy starting at- tempts. Do not attempt to start the engine us- ing a battery quick charge unit. If the engine does not run after several unsuccessful starting attempts, have it checked at the nearest authorized Mercedes-Benz Center. Excessive unburned fuel generated by repeated failed starting attempts may damage the catalytic converter. Make sure the jumper cables do not have loose or missing insulation. Make sure the cable clamps do not touch any other metal part while the other end is still attached to a battery. Warning! Keep flames or sparks away from battery. Do not smoke. Observe all safety instructions and precau- tions when handling automotive batteries (컄 page 266). The battery is located in the trunk on the right hand side underneath the luggage box (컄 page 325). Only jump start the ve- hicle from the battery in the trunk. 왘 Make sure that the two vehicles do not touch. 왘 Turn off all electrical consumers. 왘 Apply parking brake. 왘 Shift selector lever to position P. 1 Positive terminal of charged battery 2 Positive terminal of discharged battery 3 Vehicle ground 4 Negative terminal of charged battery 왘 Connect positive terminals 1 and 2 of the batteries with the jumper cables. Clamp cable to charged battery 1 first. 왘 Start engine of the vehicle with the charged battery and run at idle speed. 왘 Connect negative terminal 4 of the charged battery and vehicle ground 3 (lock ring of the trunk lid lock) in the trunk with the jumper cable. Clamp ca- ble to charged battery 4 first. Practical hints Jump starting 왘 Start the engine of the disabled vehi- cle. The message Malfunction - electric consumers switched off may appear in the instrument cluster. It will disap- pear as soon as the battery is suffi- ciently charged. Now you can again turn on the electrical consumers. Do not turn on the lights under any circumstances. 왘 Remove the jumper cables first from vehicle ground 3 and negative terminal 4 and then from positive terminals 1 and 2. 왘 Have the battery checked at the next authorized Mercedes-Benz Center. Vehicles with automatic transmission: Do not tow-start the vehicle. 347 ! To be certain to avoid a possibility of damage to the transmission, however, we recommend the drive shaft be dis- connected at the rear axle drive flange for any towing beyond a short tow to a nearby garage. Practical hints Towing the vehicle Towing the vehicle Towing the vehicle Mercedes-Benz recommends that the vehi- cle be transported with all wheels off the ground using flatbed or appropriate wheel lift/dolly equipment. Use flatbed or wheel lift/dolly equip- ment with key in starter switch turned to position 0. Do not tow with sling-type equipment. Towing with sling-type equipment over bumpy roads will damage radiator and supports. To prevent damage during transport, do not tie down vehicle by its chassis or suspension parts. Switch off the tow-away alarm and the automatic central locking When circumstances do not permit the recommended towing methods, the vehi- cle may be towed with all wheels on the ground or front wheels raised only so far as 348 to have the vehicle moved to a safe loca- tion where the recommended towing methods can be employed. If the vehicle is towed with the front axle raised, the engine must be shut off (key in starter switch position 0 or 1). Otherwise, the ESP will immediately be engaged and will apply the rear wheel brakes. When towing the vehicle with all wheels on the ground, the selector lever must be in position N and the key must be in starter switch position 2. When towing the vehicle with all wheels on the ground, the vehicle may be towed only for distances up to 30 miles (50 km) and at a speed not to exceed 30 mph (50 km/h). i To signal turns while being towed with the hazard warning flasher in use, turn key in starter switch to position 2 and activate the combination switch for the left or right turn signal in the usual manner – only the selected turn signal will operate. Upon canceling the turn signal, the haz- ard warning flasher will operate again. Warning! If circumstances require towing the vehicle with all wheels on the ground, always tow with a tow bar if: 앫 the engine will not run 앫 there is a malfunction in the SBC brake system 앫 there is a malfunction in the power sup- ply or in the vehicle’s electrical system as that will be necessary to adequately con- trol the towed vehicle. Prior to towing the vehicle with all wheels on the ground, make certain that the key is in starter switch position 2. If the key is left in the starter switch position 0 for an extended period of time, it can no longer be turned in the switch. In this case, the steering is locked. To unlock, re- move key from starter switch and reinsert. Practical hints Towing the vehicle Warning!
