Steam from an overheated engine can cause serious burns and can occur just by opening the engine hood. Stay away from the engine if you see or hear steam coming from it. To help avoid personal injury, use the jack only to lift the vehicle during a wheel change. Never get beneath the vehicle while it is supported by the jack. Keep hands and feet away from the area under the lifted vehicle. Always firmly set parking brake and block wheels before raising vehicle with jack. Do not disengage parking brake while the vehicle is raised. Be certain that the jack is always vertical (plumb line) when in use, especially on hills. Always try to use the jack on level surface. Make sure the jack arm is fully seated in the jack take-up bracket. Always lower the vehicle onto sufficient capacity jackstands before working under the vehicle. The vehicle jack is located in the cargo compartment underneath the third row seat cushions and footwell (컄 page 420) or underneath the cargo compartment floor (컄 page 419). Storage position 왘 Remove vehicle jack from its compartment. 왘 Turn crank handle in direction of arrow as far as it will go. 421 Practical hints Where will I find ...? Before storing the vehicle jack in its compartment: 앫 It should be fully collapsed. 앫 The handle must be folded in (storage position). 422 Spare wheel If your vehicle is equipped with a spare wheel (Minispare or collapsible tire), it is located in the cargo compartment under- neath the third row seat cushions and foot- well (컄 page 420) or underneath the cargo compartment floor (컄 page 419). To ac- cess the spare wheel, fold seat cushions and footwell up (컄 page 420). 1 Vehicle tool kit Wheel bolt wrench and Jack 2 Spare wheel 3 Luggage bowl Removing the spare wheel 왘 Turn luggage bowl 3 counterclock- wise. 왘 Remove spare wheel 2. The dimensions of the spare wheel (Minispare or collapsible tire) are different from those of the road wheels. As a result, the vehicle handling characteristics change when driving with a spare wheel mounted. The Minispare wheel and collapsible tire should only be used temporarily, and re- placed with a regular road wheel as quickly as possible. In the case of a flat tire, you may tempo- rarily use the spare wheel when observing the following restrictions: 앫 Do not exceed a vehicle speed of Setting up the collapsible wheel chock The collapsible wheel chock serves to additionally secure the vehicle, e.g. while changing the wheel. 50 mph (80 km/h). 앫 Drive to the nearest tire repair facility to have the flat tire repaired or re- placed as appropriate. 앫 Do not operate vehicle with more than one spare wheel mounted. Otherwise, the active head restraints cannot offer any ad- ditional protection in the event of another rear-end collision. For your convenience, we recommend that you have this work carried out by an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center. You will find the reset tool for manually operating the head restraints in the Mercedes-Benz vehicle literature pouch. 428 왘 Press reset tool downward until you hear the head restraint release mechanism audibly engage. 왘 Pull out reset tool. 왘 Firmly press head restraint cushion backward towards the rear of the vehi- cle until it engages. Warning! When pushing back the head restraint cush- ion, take care that your fingers do not be- come caught between the head restraint cushion and the cover. Failing to do so may lead to injury. 왘 Repeat this procedure on the active head restraints for second head re- straint. For information on active head restraints, see “Active head restraints” (컄 page 76). Batteries contain materials that can harm the environment if disposed of improperly. Recycling of batteries is the preferred method of disposal. Many states require sellers of batteries to accept old batteries for recycling. Halogen lamps contain pressurized gas. A bulb can explode if you: 앫 touch or move it when hot 앫 drop the bulb 앫 scratch the bulb Wear eye and hand protection. Because of high voltage in Bi-Xenon* lamps, it is dangerous to replace the bulb or repair the lamp and its components. We recom- mend that you have such work done by a qualified technician. High beam bulb/high beam flasher bulb (halogen headlamps)/high beam flasher bulb (Bi-Xenon* headlamps) 왘 Turn bulb socket 2 with the bulb counterclockwise and remove it. 왘 Pull the bulb out of bulb socket 2. 왘 Press the new bulb gently into bulb socket 2. 왘 Place bulb socket 2 back into the lamp and turn it clockwise until it en- gages. Front turn signal lamp bulb 왘 Turn bulb socket 5 with the bulb counterclockwise and remove it. 왘 Press gently onto the bulb and turn counterclockwise out of bulb socket 5. 왘 Press the new bulb gently into bulb socket 5 and turn clockwise until it engages. 왘 Place bulb socket 5 back into the lamp and turn it clockwise until it en- gages. Parking and standing lamp bulb 왘 Turn bulb socket 3 with the bulb counterclockwise and remove it. 왘 Pull the bulb out of bulb socket 3. 왘 Press the new bulb gently into bulb socket 3. 왘 Place bulb socket 3 back into the lamp and turn clockwise until it engag- es. Practical hints Replacing bulbs Additional turn signal lamp bulbs The additional turn signal lamps in the exterior rear view mirrors have LEDs. If a malfunction occurs or LEDs fail to func- tion, the entire turn signal unit must be re- placed. Have the turn signal unit replaced by an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center. Front side marker lamp bulbs Since replacing the side marker lamp bulbs is a technically highly demanding process, we recommend you have the side marker lamp bulbs replaced by an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center. 435 Practical hints Replacing bulbs Replacing bulbs for rear lamps License plate lamp Tail lamp unit The tail lamps are equipped with HiP bulbs. Warning! The bulbs in the tail lamps cannot be re- placed individually. The tail lamp bulbs are under pressure and could explode during an attempt to replace them. If the tail lamps are malfunctioning, have them exchanged at an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center. 436 1 Screw 왘 Turn the exterior lamp switch to position M (컄 page 143). 왘 Loosen both screws 1. 왘 Remove the license plate lamp. 왘 Replace the bulb. 왘 Reinstall the license plate lamp. 왘 Retighten screws 1. 왔 Replacing wiper blades The windshield wipers must be in a ver- tical position before folding them away from the windshield. They could other- wise damage the hood. Removing front wiper blades Warning! For safety reasons, switch off wipers and re- move SmartKey from starter switch (vehi- cles with KEYLESS-GO*: Make sure the vehicle’s on-board electronics have status 0) before replacing a wiper blade. Otherwise, the wiper motor could suddenly turn on and cause injury. 왘 Turn SmartKey in starter switch to position 1. 왘 Turn combination switch to wiper setting II (컄 page 55). 왘 With wiper arm in the vertical position, turn SmartKey in starter switch to position 0. 왘 Fold the wiper arm forward until it snaps into place. Practical hints Replacing wiper blades 왘 Turn the wiper blade at a right angle to wiper arm. 왘 Slide the wiper blade sideways out of the retainer. 437 Practical hints Replacing wiper blades Installing front wiper blades 왘 Slide the wiper blade onto wiper arm until it locks in place. 왘 Rotate the wiper blade into position parallel to wiper arm. 왘 Fold the wiper arm backward to rest on the windshield. Make sure you hold on to the wiper when folding the wiper arm back. 438 Never open the hood when the wiper arm is folded forward. Hold on to the wiper when folding the wiper arm back. If released, the force of the impact from the tensioning spring could crack the windshield. Do not allow the wiper arms to contact the windshield glass without a wiper blade inserted. Make certain that the wiper blades are properly installed. Improperly installed wiper blades may cause windshield damage. For your convenience, we recommend that you have this work carried out by an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center. Removing rear wiper blade Warning! For safety reasons, switch off wipers and remove SmartKey from starter switch (vehi- cles with KEYLESS-GO*: Make sure the vehicle’s on-board electronics have status 0) before replacing a wiper blade. Otherwise the motor could suddenly turn on and cause injury. 왘 Fold the wiper arm forward until it en- gages. Practical hints Replacing wiper blades Installing rear wiper blade 왘 Check if the wiper blade is securely fas- tened. 왘 Fold the wiper arm backward to rest on the rear windshield. Make sure you hold on to the wiper arm when folding it back. 1 Wiper blade 2 Tab 3 Attachment 4 Removing 왘 Turn the wiper blade 1 at a right angle to wiper arm. 왘 Press tab 2 down and push wiper blade 1 downward in direction of arrow 4. 왘 Remove wiper blade 1. 1 Wiper blade 2 Tab 3 Attachment 4 Installing 왘 Slide the wiper blade 1 into attachment 3 in direction of arrow 4. 왘 Let tab 2 latch into attachment 3 until it locks in place. 439 Vehicles with SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO*: 왘 Turn off the engine by pressing the KEYLESS-GO* start/stop button on the gear selector lever once (컄 page 61). 왘 Open the driver’s door (this puts the ig- nition in position 0, same as with the SmartKey removed from the starter switch). The driver’s door then can be closed again. 왘 Have any passenger exit the vehicle at a safe distance from the roadway. Open door only when conditions are safe to do so. Sealing tires with TIREFIT E 55 AMG vehicles with foldable third row seat are equipped with TIREFIT. Warning! Keep TIREFIT away from sparks, open flame or heat source. Do not smoke. Small tire punctures, particularly those in the tread, can be sealed with TIREFIT. TIREFIT can be used in ambient tempera- tures down to -4°F (-20°C). Practical hints Flat tire Preparing the vehicle 왘 Park the vehicle in a safe distance from moving traffic on a hard, flat surface when possible. 왘 Turn on the hazard warning flasher (컄 page 147). 왘 Turn the steering wheel so that the front wheels are in a straight ahead po- sition. 왘 Set the parking brake (컄 page 60). 왘 Move the gear selector lever to P. Vehicles with SmartKey: 왘 Turn off the engine (컄 page 61). 왘 Remove the SmartKey from the starter switch. 440 Warning! Warning! TIREFIT is a limited repair device. TIREFIT cannot be used for cuts or punctures larger than approximately 0.16 in (4 mm) and tire damage caused by driving with extremely low tire inflation pressure, or on a flat tire, or a damaged wheel. Do not drive the vehicle under such circum- stances. Contact your nearest Mercedes-Benz Center for assistance or call Roadside Assistance. 왘 Foreign objects (e.g. screws or nails) should not be removed from the tire. 왘 Take TIREFIT, the sticker, and the elec- tric air pump out of the cargo compart- ment. 왘 Attach the sticker where it will be easily seen by the driver on the instrument cluster. Take care not to allow the contents of TIREFIT to come in contact with hair, eyes or clothing. TIREFIT is harmful if inhaled, swal- lowed or absorbed through the skin - causes skin, eye and respiratory irritation. Any contact with eyes or skin should be flushed immediately with plenty of water. If clothing comes in contact with TIREFIT, change clothing as soon as possible. In case of allergic reaction or rash, consult a physician immediately. Warning! Keep TIREFIT out of reach of children. If swallowed, rinse mouth immediately with plenty of water and drink plenty of water. Do not induce vomiting! Consult a physician immediately. Keep away from open flame or heat source. Practical hints Flat tire If sealant has leaked out, let it dry. Observe safety instructions on air pump la- bel. 442 valve 7. 왘 Screw filler hose a onto tire valve 7. 왘 Insert electrical plug 4 into the vehi- cle cigarette lighter socket (컄 page 278). 왘 Turn the SmartKey in the starter switch to position 1 (컄 page 36). or 왘 Press the KEYLESS-GO* start/stop button (컄 page 38) on the gear selec- tor lever once. Do not depress brake pedal. 왘 Press I on electric air pump switch 8. The electric air pump should now switch on and inflate the tire. Do not operate the electric air pump longer than 8 minutes without interrup- tion. Otherwise it may overheat. You may operate the air pump again af- ter it has cooled off. After 5 minutes, the pressure gauge must display at least 26 psi (1.8 bar). The air hose can become hot during inflation. Please exercise appropriate caution. 왘 If this tire inflation pressure is not at- tained, turn off the electric air pump, detach the filler hose from the tire valve, and drive vehicle back and forth very slowly approximately 30 ft (10 m). This serves to better distribute the TIREFIT sealant material inside the tire. 왘 Unscrew the air pump’s air hose 5 from flange 6 of the TIREFIT contain- er. 왘 Screw air hose 5 onto tire valve 7. 왘 Inflate the tire again. Warning! If a tire inflation pressure of 26 psi (1.8 bar) is not attained, tire is too severely damaged for TIREFIT to provide a reliable tire repair. In this case, TIREFIT cannot properly seal the tire. Do not drive the vehicle. Contact the nearest Mercedes-Benz Center or call Roadside Assistance. 왘 After attaining a tire inflation pressure of 26 psi (1.8 bar), press 0 on electric air pump switch 8. The electric air pump should now be switched off. 왘 Turn the SmartKey in the ignition to position 0 (컄 page 36). or 왘 Press the KEYLESS-GO* start/stop button (컄 page 38) on the gear selec- tor lever twice. Do not depress brake pedal. 왘 Detach the electric air pump. The air hose may still be hot. Please ex- ercise appropriate caution. 왘 Place the electric air pump back in the cargo compartment. 왘 Close the cargo compartment. 왘 Drive away immediately. The TIREFIT sealant will distribute itself evenly inside the tire. Practical hints Flat tire Warning! Do not exceed vehicle speed of 50 mph (80 km/h). A TIREFIT repair is not designed to operate at higher speeds. The sticker must be attached on the instru- ment cluster where it will be easily seen by the driver. Vehicle handling characteristics may change. Adapt your driving accordingly. 컄컄 443 Practical hints Flat tire 컄컄 왘 After driving vehicle for an initial 10 minutes, check tire inflation pres- sure using the pressure gauge on the air pump. Warning! If tire inflation pressure has fallen below 20 psi (1.3 bar) do not continue to drive the vehicle. Park your vehicle safely away from the road- way and contact the nearest authorized Mercedes-Benz Center or Roadside Assistance. If tire inflation pressure is at least 20 psi (1.3 bar), inflate tire to correct pres- sure (see placard on the driver’s door B-pillar), and drive vehicle to nearest tire re- pair facility to have tire repaired or replaced. Recommended duration of use: 300 miles (500 km) at 50 mph (80 km/h) with the recommended tire inflation pres- sure. 444 Warning! Follow recommend inflation pressures.
