Changing bulbs Important safety notes Xenon bulbs If your vehicle is equipped with Xenon bulbs, you can recognize this by the following: the cone of light from the Xenon bulbs moves from the top to the bottom and back again when you start the engine. For this to be observed, the lights must be switched on before starting the engine. G Warning Xenon bulbs carry a high voltage. You could get an electric shock and be seriously or even fatally injured if you touch the electric contacts on Xenon bulbs. Therefore, never remove the cover from Xenon bulbs. Do not change Xenon bulbs yourself, but have them replaced at a qualified specialist workshop which has the necessary specialist knowledge and tools to carry out the work required. Mercedes-Benz recommends that you use an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center for this

purpose. In particular, work relevant to safety or on safety-related systems must be carried out at a qualified specialist workshop.

Bulbs and lamps are an important aspect of vehicle safety. You must therefore make sure that these function correctly at all times. Have the headlamp setting checked regularly.

Other bulbs G Warning! Bulbs and lamps can be very hot. You should therefore allow them to cool down before you change them. Otherwise, you could be burned if you touch them. Keep bulbs out of the reach of children. Otherwise, they could damage the bulbs, for example, and injure themselves. Never use a bulb which has been dropped. Such a bulb may break or even explode and injure you. Halogen bulbs are pressurized and can explode when you change them, particularly if they are very hot. You should therefore wear eye protection and gloves when you are changing them.

There are bulbs other than the Xenon bulbs that you cannot replace. Replace only the bulbs listed (Y page 251). Have the bulbs that you cannot replace yourself changed at a qualified specialist workshop. Mercedes-Benz recommends that you use an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center for this purpose. In particular, work relevant to safety or on safety-related systems must be carried out at a qualified specialist workshop. If you require assistance changing bulbs, consult a qualified specialist workshop. Do not touch the glass tube of new bulbs with your bare hands. Even minor contamination can burn into the glass surface and reduce the service life of the bulbs. Always use a lint- free cloth or only touch the base of the bulb when installing. Only use bulbs of the correct type.

256 Overview of climate control systems

i Ventilate the vehicle for a brief period

during warm weather, e.g. using the convenience opening feature (Y page 86). This will speed up the cooling process and the desired vehicle interior temperature will be reached more quickly.

i The integrated filter can remove most

particles of dust and removes pollen completely. A clogged filter reduces the amount of air supplied to the vehicle interior. For this reason, you should always observe the interval for replacing the filter, which is specified in the Service Booklet. As it depends on environmental conditions, e.g. heavy air pollution, the interval may be shorter than stated in the Service Booklet. i It is possible that the interior blower may be activated automatically 40 minutes after the SmartKey is removed. The vehicle is then ventilated for 30 minutes to dry the air-conditioning system.

Vehicle equipment

i This manual describes all the standard and optional equipment of your vehicle which was available at the time of purchase. Country-specific differences are possible. Bear in mind that your vehicle may not feature all functions described here. This also refers to safety-related systems and functions.

Overview of climate control systems Important safety notes G Warning Severe conditions (e.g. strong air pollution) may require replacement of the filter before its scheduled replacement interval. A clogged filter will reduce the air volume to the interior and the windows could fog up, impairing visibility and endangering you and others. Have a clogged filter replaced as soon as possible at an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center. G Warning Follow the recommended settings for heating and cooling given on the following pages. Otherwise, the windows could fog up, impairing visibility and endangering you and others.

Automatic climate control regulates the temperature and the humidity in the vehicle interior and filters undesirable substances from the air. Automatic climate control is only operational when the engine is running15. Optimum operation is only achieved when you drive with the side windows and tilt/sliding sunroof closed. Some functions of automatic climate control can also be set via COMAND (Y page 234).

15 The "residual heat" function can only be switched on/off if the ignition is switched off.

Activating/deactivating cooling with air dehumidification Important information The cooling with air dehumidification function is only available when the engine is running. The air inside the vehicle is cooled and

dehumidified according to the temperature selected. G Warning If you switch off the cooling function, the vehicle will not be cooled when weather conditions are warm. The windows can fog up more quickly. Window fogging may impair visibility and endanger you and others.

Condensation may drip from the underside of the vehicle when the automatic climate control is in cooling mode. This is normal and not a sign that there is a malfunction. You can activate or deactivate the "cooling with air dehumidification" function via COMAND (Y page 236). i The cooling with air dehumidification function uses refrigerant R134a. This coolant does not contain chlorofluorocarbons, and therefore does not damage the ozone layer.

Problems with the "cooling with air dehumidification" function If you can no longer switch on the cooling with air dehumidification function via COMAND, the cooling with air dehumidification function is switched off due to a malfunction. X Consult a qualified specialist workshop.

Setting climate control to automatic G Warning If you switch off the cooling function, the vehicle will not be cooled when weather conditions are warm. The windows can fog up

more quickly. Window fogging may impair visibility and endanger you and others.

In automatic mode, the set temperature is maintained automatically at a constant level. The system automatically regulates the temperature of the dispensed air, the airflow and the air distribution. Automatic mode will achieve optimal operation if cooling with air dehumidification is also activated. If desired, cooling with air dehumidification can be deactivated. Vehicle equipment

i This manual describes all the standard and optional equipment of your vehicle which was available at the time of purchase. Country-specific differences are possible. Bear in mind that your vehicle may not feature all functions described here. This also refers to safety-related systems and functions.

Notes on breaking-in a new vehicle The first 1000 miles (1500 km) The more you look after the engine when it is new, the happier you will be with its performance in the future. RDrive at varying vehicle speeds and engine speeds for the first 1000 miles (1500 km) for this reason.

RAvoid overstraining the vehicle during this

period, e.g. driving at full throttle.

RChange gear in good time, at the latest

when the tachometer needle is 2/3 of the way to the red area in the tachometer display.

RDo not manually shift to a lower gear to

brake the vehicle.

RIf possible, do not depress the accelerator

pedal past the point of resistance (kickdown).

ROnly select shift ranges 3, 2 or 1 when

driving slowly, e.g. in mountainous terrain. RIdeally, drive program E (on AMG vehicles:

drive program C) should be selected for driving the first 1000 miles (1500 km).

After 1000 miles (1500 km) you may gradually bring the vehicle up to full road and engine speeds.

Additional breaking-in notes for AMG vehicles: RFor the first 1000 miles (1500 km), do not

exceed a speed of 85 mph (140 km/h). ROnly allow the engine to briefly reach a maximum engine speed of 4500 rpm.

RShift gears in good time. i Also observe these breaking-in notes

when the vehicle's engine or axle gear have been replaced.

i Always observe the respective limit

speeds.

Driving Important safety notes G Warning Make sure absolutely no objects are obstructing the pedals' range of movement. Keep the driver's footwell clear of all obstacles. If there are any floormats or carpets in the footwell, make sure the pedals still have sufficient clearance. During sudden driving or braking maneuvers the objects could get caught between the pedals. You could then no longer brake or accelerate. This could lead to accidents and injury. G Warning On slippery road surfaces, never downshift in order to obtain braking action. This could result in drive wheel slip and reduced vehicle control. Your vehicle's ABS will not prevent this type of loss of control. G Warning It is dangerous to shift AUTOTRONIC out of parking position P or neutral position N if the engine speed is higher than idle speed. If your foot is not firmly on the brake pedal, the vehicle could accelerate quickly forward or in reverse. You could lose control of the vehicle and hit someone or something. Only shift into

gear when the engine is idling normally and when your right foot is firmly on the brake pedal.

! Warm up the engine quickly. Do not use the engine's full performance until it has reached operating temperature. Only shift the automatic transmission to the desired drive position when the vehicle is stationary. Where possible, avoid spinning the drive wheels when pulling away on slippery roads. You could otherwise damage the drive train.

! CL 63 AMG: at low engine oil

temperatures below 68 ‡ (+20 †), the maximum engine speed is restricted in order to protect the engine. To protect the engine and maintain smooth engine operation, avoid driving at full throttle when the engine is cold.

Therefore, never leave children unattended in the vehicle, as they could otherwise accidentally start the engine. When leaving the vehicle, always take the SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle. Do not leave children unattended in the vehicle, or with access to an unlocked vehicle. A child's unsupervised access to a vehicle could result in an accident and/or serious personal injury.

i The Start/Stop button can be used to

start the vehicle without inserting the SmartKey in the ignition lock. The SmartKey must be in the vehicle.

X The Start/Stop button must be inserted in

the ignition lock.

i To start the engine with the SmartKey instead of with KEYLESS-GO, remove the Start/Stop button from the ignition lock.

Pulling away Automatic transmission G Warning It is dangerous to shift AUTOTRONIC out of parking position P or neutral position N if the engine speed is higher than idle speed. If your foot is not firmly on the brake pedal, the vehicle could accelerate quickly forward or in reverse. You could lose control of the vehicle and hit someone or something. Only shift into gear when the engine is idling normally and when your right foot is firmly on the brake pedal.

i It is only possible to shift the transmission

from position P to the desired position if you depress the brake pedal. Only then is the parking lock released. If you do not depress the brake pedal, you can move the DIRECT SELECT selector lever but the parking lock remains engaged.

X Depress the brake pedal and keep it

depressed.

X Shift the transmission to position D or R. X Wait until the gear change is completed

before pulling away.

X Release the brake pedal. X Carefully depress the accelerator pedal.

The electric parking brake (Y page 285) is automatically released. The red F indicator lamp (USA only) or the red ! indicator lamp (Canada only) in the instrument cluster goes out.

i The vehicle locks centrally once you have pulled away. The locking knobs in the doors drop down.

270 Driving

You can open the doors from the inside at any time. You can also deactivate the automatic locking feature .

i Upshifts take place at higher engine

speeds after a cold start. This helps the catalytic converter to reach its operating temperature more quickly.

Hill start assist Hill start assist helps you when pulling away forwards or in reverse on an uphill gradient. It holds the vehicle for a short time after you have removed your foot from the brake pedal. This gives you enough time to move your foot from the brake pedal to the accelerator pedal and depress it before the vehicle begins to roll. G Warning Never leave the vehicle when it is held by hill start assist. After approximately one second, hill start assist will no longer brake your vehicle and it could roll away.

X Take your foot off the brake pedal. i Once you have taken your foot off the

brake pedal, the vehicle is held for around one second.

X Pull away. Hill start assist will not function if: Ryou are pulling away on a level road or a

downhill gradient.

Rthe transmission is in position N. Rthe electric parking brake is applied. RESP® is malfunctioning.

ECO start/stop function General notes The ECO start/stop function is only available for the CL 63 AMG. The ECO start/stop function is only available in drive program C.

The ECO start/stop function switches the engine off automatically when the vehicle stops moving. The engine starts automatically when you pull away again. The ECO start/stop function thereby helps you to reduce the fuel consumption and emissions of your vehicle.

You could suffer serious or even fatal injury or cause an accident resulting in injury or death. Never leave the vehicle while the ECO symbol in the multifunction display is shown in green or yellow. Always secure the vehicle against rolling away before leaving it.

! Always switch the ignition off and take the

key with you when leaving the vehicle.

Automatic engine switch-off The ECO start/stop function switches the engine off automatically if the vehicle is braked to a standstill and the brake remains depressed with the transmission in position D or N. i You can still activate HOLD when the

vehicle is stationary, even if the engine has been switched off automatically. It is then not necessary to continue applying the brakes during the automatic stop phase. When you depress the accelerator pedal, the engine starts automatically and the braking effect of the HOLD function is deactivated. Depress the accelerator pedal carefully, as the engine must be started first.

The engine is only switched off if: Rthe outside temperature is within the range

which is suitable for the system. Rthe engine is at normal operating

temperature.

Rthe set temperature for the vehicle interior

has been reached.

Rthe battery is sufficiently charged. Rthe system detects that the windshield is not fogged up when the air-conditioning system is switched on.

Rthe hood is closed. Rno engine relevant diagnostics are active. Rthe driver's door is closed and the seat belt

is fastened.

Automatic engine start The engine is started automatically if you: Rrelease the brake pedal when HOLD is not

activated and the transmission is in position D or N

Driving 271

Rswitch off the ECO start/stop function or

switch to drive program S or M

Runfasten your seat belt or open the driver's

door

The engine is also started automatically if: Rthe vehicle starts to roll. Rthe brake system requires this. Rthe system detects moisture on the windshield when the air-conditioning system is switched on.

Rthe temperature in the vehicle interior

deviates from the set range.

Rthe battery's condition of charge is too low.

Deactivating/activating the ECO start/ stop function General notes You can activate and deactivate the ECO start/stop function using COMAND (Y page 230). i You can also use the programmable button (Y page 109) to activate and deactivate the ECO start/stop function if you have assigned this function to the button.
