switch

앫 the automatic transmission will remain

locked in park position P.

For more information see “Batteries” (컄 page 702) or “Jump starting” (컄 page 707).

! Before towing the vehicle observe the fol- lowing instructions: 앫 Do not tow-start the vehicle. 앫 Use flatbed or wheel lift/dolly equipment

with the ignition switched off.

앫 Do not tow with sling-type equipment. Tow- ing with sling-type equipment over bumpy roads will damage radiator and supports. 앫 Towing of the vehicle should only be done

using the properly installed towing eye bolt. Never attach a tow cable, tow rope or tow rod to the vehicle chassis, frame or suspen- sion parts. For more information see “Install- ing towing eye bolt” (컄 page 713).

Practical hints Towing the vehicle

Mercedes-Benz recommends that the vehicle be transported with all wheels off the ground using flatbed or appropriate wheel lift/dolly equipment. This method is preferable to other types of towing.

! To prevent damage during transport, do not tie down vehicle by its chassis or suspension parts.

When circumstances do not permit the recommended towing methods, the vehicle may be towed with all wheels on the ground or front axle raised only so far as necessary to have the vehicle moved to a safe location where the recommended towing methods can be employed.

710

Towing with front wheels raised

Warning!

When leaving the SmartKey or SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO* in the starter switch, do not leave children unattended in the vehicle. It is possible for children to switch on the ignition which could result in unsupervised use of vehicle equipment. Unsupervised use of vehicle equipment could result in an accident and/or serious personal injury.

왘 Vehicles with KEYLESS-GO*: Remove

the KEYLESS-GO start/stop button from the starter switch (컄 page 366). 왘 Insert the SmartKey into the starter

switch.

왘 Switch on the ignition. 왘 Switch off the automatic central lock-

ing (컄 page 363).

왘 Depress the brake pedal. 왘 Shift the automatic transmission to

neutral position N.

왘 If engaged, manually release the

electronic parking brake.

왘 Switch off the ignition and leave the

SmartKey in the starter switch.

Practical hints Towing the vehicle

! Keep in mind that it is important for the SmartKey to be left in starter switch with the ig- nition switched off. As soon as the SmartKey is removed from the starter switch the automatic transmission will shift to park position P.

! Make sure that the ignition is switched off. If the starter switch is in position 2, active brak- ing action through the ESP® may otherwise seri- ously damage the brake system.

! The vehicle may be towed only for distances up to 30 miles (50 km) and at a speed not to ex- ceed 30 mph (50 km/h).

711

Warning!

With the engine not running, there is no power assistance for the brake and steering systems. In this case, it is important to keep in mind that a considerably higher degree of effort is necessary to brake and steer the ve- hicle. Adapt your driving accordingly.

왘 Switch on the ignition. 왘 Shift the automatic transmission to

neutral position N.

왘 If engaged, manually release the

electronic parking brake.

! Keep in mind that it is important to have the ignition switched on. As soon as the SmartKey is removed from the starter switch or the SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO* is removed from the vehicle, the automatic transmission will shift to park position P.

! The vehicle may be towed only for distances up to 30 miles (50 km) and at a speed not to ex- ceed 30 mph (50 km/h).

i To signal turns while being towed with the hazard warning flasher in use, the ignition must be switched on. You can then activate the com- bination switch for the left or right turn signal in the usual manner – only the selected turn signal will operate. Upon canceling the turn signal, the hazard warn- ing flasher will operate again.

Practical hints Fuses

The electrical fuses in your vehicle serve to switch off malfunctioning power circuits. If a fuse is blown, the component(s) and systems secured by that fuse will stop op- erating.

Warning!

Only use fuses approved by Mercedes-Benz with the specified amperage for the system in question and do not attempt to repair or bridge a blown fuse. Using other than ap- proved fuses or using repaired or bridged fuses may cause an overload leading to a fire, and/or cause damage to electrical components and/or systems. Have the cause determined and remedied by an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center.

! Switch off the vehicle’s internal electrical functions (컄 page 705) when you are working on the fuses.

i A blown fuse must be replaced by an appro- priate spare fuse (recognizable by its color or the fuse rating given on the fuse) of the amperage recommended in the fuse chart. Any Mercedes-Benz Center will be glad to advise you on this subject.

If a newly inserted fuse blows again, have the cause determined and rectified by an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center. A fuse chart explains the fuse allocation and fuse amperages. It is located in the trunk with the vehicle tool kit (컄 page 681).

왔 Rims and tires ! Only use tires which have been tested and approved by Mercedes-Benz. Tires approved by Mercedes-Benz are developed to provide best possible performance in conjunction with the driving safety systems on your vehicle such as ABS or ESP®. Tires specially developed for your vehicle and tested and approved by Mercedes-Benz can be identified by finding the following on the tire’s sidewall: 앫 MO = Mercedes-Benz Original equipment

tires AMG vehicles only: Does not apply to all approved tires on AMG vehicles. For information on tested and approved tires for AMG vehicles, contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center.

Using tires other than those approved by Mercedes-Benz may result in damage that is not covered by the Mercedes-Benz Limited Warranty.

! Using tires other than those approved by Mercedes-Benz can have detrimental effects, such as 앫 poor handling characteristics 앫 increased noise 앫 increased fuel consumption Moreover, tires and rims not approved by Mercedes-Benz may, under load, exhibit dimen- sional variations and different tire deformation characteristics that could cause them to come into contact with the vehicle body or axle parts. Damage to the tires or the vehicle may be the result.

i Further information on tires and rims is available at any authorized Mercedes-Benz Center. A Tire and Loading Information placard with the recommended tire inflation pressures is located on the driver’s door B-pillar (컄 page 564). Some vehicles may have supple- mental tire inflation pressure information for driving at high speeds (컄 page 570) or for vehi- cle loads less than the maximum loaded vehicle condition (컄 page 577). If such information is provided, it can be found on the tire inflation pressure label located on the inside of the fuel filler flap.

Technical data Rims and tires

The tire inflation pressure should be checked regularly and should only be adjusted on cold tires. Follow tire manufacturer’s maintenance recommendation included with vehicle. i The following pages also list the approved wheel rim and tire sizes for equipping your vehi- cles with winter tires. Winter tires are not avail- able as standard or optional factory equipment, but can be purchased from an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center. Depending on vehicle model and the standard or optional factory-equipped wheel rim/tire config- uration on your vehicle (Appearance Package, Sport Package etc.), equipping your vehicle with winter tires approved for your vehicle model may also require the purchase of two or four wheel rims of the recommended size for use with these winter tires. Engine oils

Engine oil additives

Brake fluid

! Do not blend oil additives with engine oil. They may damage the engine. Damage or malfunctions resulting from blending oil additives are not covered by the Mercedes-Benz Limited Warranty.

Air conditioning refrigerant

R-134a (HFC) refrigerant and special PAG lubricating oil are used in the air condition- ing system.

! Never use R-12 (CFC) or mineral-based lubricating oil. Otherwise damage to the system will occur.

Warning!

During vehicle operation, the boiling point of the brake fluid is continuously reduced through the absorption of moisture from the atmosphere.

Under extremely strenuous operating condi- tions, this moisture content can lead to the formation of bubbles in the system, thus re- ducing the system’s efficiency.

Therefore, the brake fluid must be replaced regularly. Refer to your vehicle’s Maintenance Booklet for replacement inter- val.

Only brake fluid approved by Mercedes-Benz is recommended. Any au- thorized Mercedes-Benz Center will pro- vide you with additional information.

Engine oils are specifically tested for their suitability in our engines and durability for our service intervals. Therefore, only use approved engine oils and oil filters required for vehicles with Maintenance System. For a listing of approved engine oils and oil filters, refer to the Factory Approved Service Products pamphlet (USA only), or contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center.

! Using engine oils and oil filters of specification other than those expressly required for the Maintenance System, or chang- ing of oil and oil filter at change intervals longer than those called for by the Maintenance System will result in engine or emission control system damage not covered by the Mercedes-Benz Lim- ited Warranty. Please follow Maintenance System recommen- dations for scheduled oil changes. Failure to do so will result in engine or emission control sys- tem damage not covered by the Mercedes-Benz Limited Warranty.

Premium unleaded gasoline

Warning!

Gasoline is highly flammable and poisonous. It burns violently and can cause serious personal injury.

Never allow sparks, flame or smoking mate- rials near gasoline!

Turn off the engine before refueling.

Whenever you are around gasoline, avoid in- haling fumes and skin or clothing contact, extinguish all smoking materials.

Direct skin contact with fuels and the inha- lation of fuel vapors are damaging to your health.

! To maintain the engine’s durability and per- formance, premium unleaded gasoline must be used. If premium unleaded gasoline is not avail- able and low octane fuel is used, follow these precautions: 앫 Have the fuel tank only partially filled with unleaded regular gasoline and fill up with premium unleaded gasoline as soon as possible.

앫 Avoid full throttle driving and abrupt acceler-

ation.

앫 Do not exceed an engine speed of 3000 rpm if the vehicle is loaded with a light load such as two persons and no luggage.

앫 Do not exceed 2/3 of maximum accelerator pedal position if the vehicle is fully loaded or operating in mountainous terrain.

Technical data Fuels, coolants, lubricants, etc.

Fuel requirements

Only use premium unleaded fuel: 앫 The octane number (posted at the

pump) must be 91 min. It is an average of both the Research Octane Number (RON) and the Motor Octane Number (MON): (RON+MON)/2. This is also known as the ANTI-KNOCK INDEX.

Unleaded gasoline containing oxygenates such as ethanol, IPA, IBA and TBA can be used provided the ratio of any one of these oxygenates to gasoline does not exceed 10%; MTBE must not exceed 15%. The ratio of methanol to gasoline must not exceed 3% plus additional co-solvents. Using mixtures of ethanol and methanol is not allowed. Gasohol, which contains 10% ethanol and 90% unleaded gasoline, can be used. These blends must also meet all other fuel requirements, such as resistance to spark knock, boiling range, vapor pressure, etc.

737

Technical data Fuels, coolants, lubricants, etc.

Gasoline additives

A major concern among engine manufac- turers is carbon build-up caused by gaso- line. Mercedes-Benz recommends only the use of quality gasoline containing additives that prevent the build-up of carbon depos- its. After an extended period of using fuels without such additives, carbon deposits can build up especially on the intake valves and in the combustion area, leading to en- gine performance problems such as: 앫 Warm-up hesitation 앫 Unstable idle 앫 Knocking/pinging 앫 Misfire 앫 Power loss

738

In areas where carbon deposits may be en- countered due to lack of availability of gas- olines which contains these additives, Mercedes-Benz recommends the use of additives approved by us for use on Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Refer to the Factory Approved Service Products pam- phlet (USA only) or contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center of listing of ap- proved product(s). Follow directions on product label. Do not blend other fuel additives with fuel. This only results in unnecessary cost and may be harmful to the engine operation.

! Damage or malfunction resulting from poor fuel quality or from blending additional fuel addi- tives other than those tested and approved by us for use on Mercedes-Benz vehicles are not cov- ered by the Mercedes-Benz Limited Warranty.

Coolants

The engine coolant is a mixture of water and anticorrosion/antifreeze, which pro- vides: 앫 Corrosion protection 앫 Freeze protection 앫 Boiling protection (by increasing the

boiling point)

The cooling system was filled at the factory with a coolant providing freeze protection to approximately -35°F (-37°C) and corro- sion protection.

! Add premixed coolant solution only. Adding water and MB 325.0 Anticorrosion/Antifreeze separately from each other, could cause engine damage not covered by the Mercedes-Benz Lim- ited Warranty.

If the antifreeze mixture is effective to -35°F (-37°C), the boiling point of the cool- ant in the pressurized cooling system is reached at approximately 266°F (130°C).

The coolant solution must be used year round to provide the necessary corrosion protection and increase boil-over protec- tion. Refer to Maintenance Booklet for re- placement interval. Coolant system design and coolant used determine the replacement interval. The replacement interval published in the Maintenance Booklet is only applicable if MB 325.0 Anticorrosion/Antifreeze solu- tion or other Mercedes-Benz approved products of equal specification are used to renew the coolant concentration or bring it back up to the proper level. For information on other Mercedes-Benz approved products of equal specification, refer to the Factory Approved Service Products pamphlet (USA only) or contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center.

To provide important corrosion protection, the solution must be at least 50% anticor- rosion/antifreeze (equivalent to freeze protection to approximately -35°F [-37°C]). If you use a solution that is more than 55% anticorrosion/antifreeze (freeze protection to approximately -49°F [-45°C]), the engine temperature will in- crease due to the lower heat transfer capa- bility of the solution. Therefore, do not use more than this amount of anticorrosion/ antifreeze. If the coolant level is low, water and MB 325.0 Anticorrosion/Antifreeze should be used to bring it up to the proper level (have cooling system checked for signs of leakage). The water in the cooling system must meet minimum requirements, which are usually satisfied by normal drinking water. If you are not sure about the water quality, con- sult an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center.

Technical data Fuels, coolants, lubricants, etc.

Anticorrosion/antifreeze Your vehicle contains a number of alumi- num parts. The use of aluminum compo- nents in motor vehicle engines necessitates that anticorrosion/antifreeze coolant used in such engines be specifical- ly formulated to protect the aluminum parts. Failure to use such anticorrosion/ antifreeze coolant will result in a signifi- cantly shortened service life. Therefore, the following product is strongly recommended for use in your vehicle: MB 325.0 Anticorrosion/Antifreeze agent. Before the start of the winter season (or once a year in hot southern regions), you should have the anticorrosion/antifreeze concentration checked. The coolant is also regularly checked each time you bring your vehicle to an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center for service.
