A driver’s attention to the road must always be his/her primary focus when driving. For your safety and the safety of others, we recommend that you pull over to a safe location and stop before placing or taking a telephone call. If you choose to use the telephone while driving, please use the hands-free device and only use the telephone when weather, road and traffic conditions permit.
Some jurisdictions prohibit the driver from using a cellular telephone while driving a vehicle.
Bear in mind that at a speed of just 30 mph (approximately 50 km/h), your vehicle is covering a distance of 44 feet (approximately 14 m) every second.
Never operate radio transmitters equipped with a built-in or attached antenna (i.e. with- out being connected to an external antenna) from inside the vehicle while the engine is running. Doing so could lead to a malfunc- tion of the vehicle’s electronic system, possibly resulting in an accident and personal injury.

왔 Manual transmission For more information on driving with a manual transmission, see “Manual trans- mission” (컄 page 48).
Controls in detail Manual transmission
Warning!
Warning!
For vehicles equipped with a manual trans- mission, getting out of your vehicle with the gearshift lever not engaged in 1st or reverse gear and parking brake engaged is danger- ous. Also, when parked on an incline, an en- gaged 1st or reverse gear alone may not prevent your vehicle from moving, possibly hitting people or objects.
Always set the parking brake in addition to engaging first or reverse gear (컄 page 56). When parked on an incline, turn the front wheel towards the road curb.
Do not park this vehicle in areas where com- bustible materials such as grass, hay, or leaves can come into contact with the hot exhaust system, as these materials could be ignited and cause a vehicle fire.
When leaving the vehicle, always remove the SmartKey from the starter switch, take it with you, and lock the vehicle. Do not leave children unattended in the vehicle, or with access to an unlocked vehicle. Children could move the gearshift lever, which could result in an accident and/or serious injury.
Warning!
On slippery road surfaces, never downshift in order to obtain braking action. This could result in drive wheel slip and reduced vehi- cle control. Your vehicle’s ABS will not pre- vent this type of loss of control.

When you are shifting into the 5th or 6th gear, make sure that you press the gearshift lever to the right. Other- wise, you could accidentally shift into the 3rd or 4th gear and damage the transmission. Downshifting gears leading to overrevving the engine can result in engine damage that is not covered by the Mercedes-Benz Limited Warranty. Never hold the vehicle stopped on a hill by using the clutch pedal. The clutch may be damaged which is not covered by the Mercedes-Benz Limited Warranty. Do not exceed the engine speed limits. Refer to tachometer (컄 page 121) for engine speeds.
Shifting into reverse
Only shift into reverse gear R, when the vehicle is stationary, as the transmis- sion could otherwise be damaged.
왘 Stop the vehicle completely. 왘 Fully depress clutch pedal. 왘 Move the gearshift lever to the neutral
position (no gear selected).
왘 Move the gearshift lever to the left until
you feel a certain resistance.
왘 Push the gearshift lever past this
resistance.
왘 Then move the gearshift lever forward
into position R.
왔 Automatic transmission* For more information on driving with an automatic transmission, see “Automatic transmission*” (컄 page 49). Your vehicle’s transmission adapts its gear shifting process to your individual driving style by continually adjusting the shift points up or down. These shift point adjust- ments are performed based on current operating and driving conditions. If the operating conditions change, the automatic transmission reacts by adjusting its gear shift program.
During the brief warm-up, transmission upshifting is delayed. This allows the catalytic converter to heat up more quickly to operating temperature.

Warning!
One-touch gearshifting
It is dangerous to shift the gear selector lever out of P or N if the engine speed is higher than idle speed. If your foot is not firmly on the brake pedal, the vehicle could accelerate quickly forward or reverse. You could lose control of the vehicle and hit someone or something. Only shift into gear when the engine is idling normally and when your right foot is firmly on the brake pedal.
When the gear selector lever is in position D, you can influence transmission shifting by: 앫 limiting the gear range 앫 changing gears manually
Even with an automatic transmission you can change the gears manually when the gear selector lever is in position D.
Downshifting 왘 Briefly press the gear selector lever to
the left in the D- direction.
The transmission will shift from the current gear to the next lower gear. This action simultaneously limits the gear range of the transmission (컄 page 161).
Warning!
On slippery road surfaces, never downshift in order to obtain braking action. This could result in drive wheel slip and reduced vehicle control. Your vehicle’s ABS will not prevent this type of loss of control.
To avoid overrevving the engine when the gear selector lever is moved to the D- direction, the transmission will not shift to a lower gear if the engine’s max. speed would be exceeded.
Upshifting 왘 Briefly press the gear selector lever to
the right in the D+ direction.

Gear selector lever position
Effect
ì Park position
Gear selector lever position when the vehicle is parked. Place gear selector lever in position P only when vehicle is stopped. The park position is not intended to serve as a brake when the vehicle is parked. Rather, the driver should always set the parking brake in addition to placing the gear selector lever in position P to secure the vehicle.
162
Effect The SmartKey can only be removed from the starter switch with the gear selector lever in position P. With the SmartKey removed, the gear selector lever is locked in position P. If the vehicle’s electrical system is malfunctioning, the gear selector lever could remain locked in position P (컄 page 380). í Reverse gear
Place gear selector lever in position R only when vehicle is stopped.
Effect
ë Neutral
No power is transmitted from the engine to the drive axle. When the brakes are released, the vehicle can be moved freely (pushed or towed). To avoid damage to the trans- mission, never engage N while driving. If the ESP is deactivated or malfunctioning: Move gear selector lever to N only if the vehicle is in danger of skidding, e.g. on icy roads.
ê Drive
The transmission shifts automatically. All five forward gears are available.
! Coasting the vehicle, or driving for any other reason with gear selector lever in N can result in transmission damage that is not covered by the Mercedes-Benz Limited Warranty.

Warning!
Warning!
When leaving the vehicle, always remove the SmartKey from the starter switch, take it with you, and lock the vehicle. Do not leave children unattended in the vehicle, or with access to an unlocked vehicle. Children could move the gear selector lever from position P, which could result in an accident and/or serious personal injury.
Getting out of your vehicle with the gear selector lever not fully engaged in position P is dangerous. Also, position P alone is not intended to or capable of preventing your vehicle from moving, possibly hitting people or objects.
Always set the parking brake in addition to shifting to position P (컄 page 50). When parked on an incline, turn the front wheels towards the road curb.
Do not park this vehicle in areas where com- bustible materials such as grass, hay, or leaves can come into contact with the hot exhaust system, as these materials could be ignited and cause a vehicle fire.
163
! Never change the program mode when the gear selector lever is out of position P. This could result in a change of driving characteristics for which you may not be prepared.
The last selected program mode (S or C) is switched on when the engine is restarted in the automatic program mode.
왘 Press program mode selector
switch 1 repeatedly until the letter of the desired program mode appears in the multifunction display (컄 page 159). Select C for comfort driving: 앫 The vehicle starts out in second
gear (both forward and reverse) for gentler starts. This does not apply if full throttle is applied or gear range 1 is selected.
앫 Traction and driving stability are
improved on icy roads.
앫 Upshifts occur earlier even when
you give more gas. The engine then operates at lower rpms and the wheels are less likely to spin.

Electrolyte drops coming into contact with the vehicle paint finish can be completely removed only while in the liquid state by applying plenty of water.
Warning!
Exercise care when using the passenger-side exterior rear view mirror. The mirror surface is convex (outwardly curved surface for a wider field of view). Objects in mirror are closer than they appear. Check your inside rear view mirror or glance over your shoulder before chang- ing lanes.
Warning!
The auto-dimming function does not react if incoming light is not aimed directly at sen- sors in the interior rear view mirror.
The interior rear view mirror and the exterior rear view mirror on the driver’s side do not react, for example, when transporting cargo which covers the rear window.
Glare can endanger you and others.
Warning!
In the case of an accident liquid electrolyte may escape from the mirror housing if the mirror glass breaks.
Electrolyte has an irritating effect. Do not allow the liquid to come into contact with eyes, skin, clothing, or respiratory system. In case it does, immediately flush affected area with water, and seek medical help if necessary.

Controls in detail Climate control
The climate control is operational when- ever the engine is running. You can oper- ate the climate control system in either the automatic or manual mode. The system cools or heats the interior depending on the selected interior temperature and the current outside temperature.
Nearly all dust particles, pollutants and odors are filtered out before outside air en- ters the passenger compartment through the air distribution system. The air conditioning will not engage (no cooling) if the mode ACOFF is activated or mode A/C is deactivated (컄 page 179).
Warning!
Warning!
Follow the recommended settings for heat- ing and cooling given on the following pag- es. Otherwise the windows could fog up, impairing visibility and endangering you and others.
When operating the climate control, the air that enters the passenger compartment through the air vents in the footwell can be very hot or very cold (depending on the set temperature). This may cause burns or frost- bite on unprotected skin in the immediate area of the air vents. Always keep sufficient distance between unprotected parts of the body and the footwell air vents. If necessary, change the air flow using the air distribution controls to direct the air away from the foot- well air vents (컄 page 176).
174
Severe conditions (e.g. strong air pollution) may require replacement of the filter before its scheduled interval. A clogged filter will reduce the air volume to the interior. If the vehicle interior is hot, ventilate the interior before driving off, see “Opening (Summer opening feature)” (컄 page 240). Keep the air intake grille in front of the windshield free of snow and debris. Do not obstruct air flow by placing objects on the air flow-through exhaust slots below the rear window.
Controls in detail Climate control
Setting the temperature
Use temperature controls 2 and 3 (컄 page 173) to separately adjust the air temperature on each side of the passenger compartment. You should raise or lower the temperature setting in small incre- ments, preferably starting at 72°F (22°C).
When operating the climate control system in automatic mode, you will only rarely need to adjust the tempera- ture, air volume and air distribution.
Increasing 왘 Turn temperature control 2 or 3
slightly to the right. The climate control system will corre- spondingly adjust the interior air tem- perature.
Decreasing 왘 Turn temperature control 2 or 3
slightly counterclockwise. The climate control system will corre- spondingly adjust the interior air tem- perature.
Deactivating the climate control system
Deactivating 왘 Set air volume control 1 (컄 page 173)
to position 0.
When the air conditioning is switched off, the outside air supply and circula- tion are also switched off. Only choose this setting for a short time. Otherwise the windows could fog up.
Reactivating 왘 Set air volume control 1 (컄 page 173)
to any speed.
175
Use the air volume control 1 (컄 page 173) to adjust the air volume. You can select between six air volume speeds.
