WARNING

Use extreme caution when towing the vehicle. (cid:129) Avoid sudden starts or erratic driving maneuvers which would place excessive stress on the emergency towing hook and tow- ing cable or chain. The hook and towing cable or chain may break and cause serious injury or dam- age.

(cid:129) If the disabled vehicle cannot be moved, do not forcibly continue the towing. Contact an authorized Hyundai dealer or a commercial tow truck service for assistance. (cid:129) Tow the vehicle as straight ahead

steering wheel isn’t locked.

(cid:129) More steering effort will be required because the power steering system will be disabled.

(cid:129) If you are driving down a long hill, the brakes may overheat and brake per- formance will be reduced. Stop often and let the brakes cool off.

m) long. Attach a white or red cloth (about 12 inches (30 cm) wide) in the middle of the strap for easy visibility.

What to do in an emergency

CAUTION - Automatic transaxle

(cid:129) If the car is being towed with all four wheels on the ground,it can be towed only from the front.Be sure that the transaxle is in neu- tral. Be sure the steering is unlocked by placing the ignition switch in the ACC position. A driver must be in the towed vehi- cle to operate the steering and brakes.

(cid:129) To avoid serious damage to the automatic transaxle, limit the vehicle speed to 10 mph (15 km/h) and drive less than 1 mile (1.5
km) when towing.

(cid:129) Before towing, check the auto- matic transaxle fluid leak under your vehicle. If the automatic transaxle fluid is leaking, a flatbed equipment or towing dolly must be used.

OWNER MAINTENANCE The following lists are vehicle checks and inspections that should be performed by the owner or an authorized HYUNDAI dealer at the frequencies indicated to help ensure safe, dependable operation of your vehicle. Any adverse conditions should be brought to the attention of your dealer as soon as possible. These Owner Maintenance Checks are generally not covered by warranties and you may be charged for labor, parts and lubricants used.

(cid:129) Performing maintenance work on a vehicle can be dangerous. You can be seriously injured while performing some maintenance procedures. If you lack sufficient knowledge and experience or the proper tools and equipment to do the work, have it done by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.

(cid:129) Working under the hood with the engine running is dangerous. It becomes even more dangerous when you wear jewelry or loose clothing. These can become entangled in moving parts and result in injury. Therefore, if you must run the engine while work- ing under the hood, make certain that you remove all jewelry (espe- cially rings, bracelets, watches, and necklaces) and all neckties, scarves, and similar loose cloth- ing before getting near the engine or cooling fans.

While operating your vehicle: (cid:129) Note any changes in the sound of the exhaust or any smell of exhaust fumes in the vehicle.

(cid:129) Check for vibrations in the steering wheel. Notice any increased steering effort or looseness in the steering wheel, or change in its straight-ahead position.

(cid:129) Notice if your vehicle constantly turns slightly or “pulls” to one side when trav- eling on smooth, level road.

(cid:129) When stopping, listen and check for unusual sounds, pulling to one side, increased brake pedal travel or “hard- to-push” brake pedal.

(cid:129) If any slipping or changes in the oper- ation of your transaxle occurs, check the transaxle fluid level.

EXPLANATION OF SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE ITEMS Engine oil and filter The engine oil and filter should be changed at the intervals specified in the maintenance schedule. If the car is being driven in severe conditions, more fre- quent oil and filter changes are required.

Fuel filter A clogged filter can limit the speed at which the vehicle may be driven, damage the emission system and cause multiple issues such as hard starting. If an exces- sive amount of foreign matter accumu- lates in the fuel tank, the filter may require replacement more frequently. After installing a new filter, run the engine for several minutes, and check for leaks at the connections. Fuel filters should be installed by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.

Fuel lines, fuel hoses and con- nections Check the fuel lines, fuel hoses and con- nections for leakage and damage. Have an authorized HYUNDAI dealer replace any damaged or leaking parts immedi- ately.

Vapor hose and fuel filler cap The vapor hose and fuel filler cap should be inspected at those intervals specified in the maintenance schedule. Make sure that a new vapor hose or fuel filler cap is correctly replaced.

Vacuum crankcase ventilation hoses Inspect the surface of hoses for evidence of heat and/or mechanical damage. Hard and brittle rubber, cracking, tears, cuts, abrasions, and excessive swelling indi- cate deterioration. Particular attention should be paid to examine those hose surfaces nearest to high heat sources, such as the exhaust manifold. Inspect the hose routing to assure that the hoses do not come in contact with any heat source, sharp edges or moving component which might cause heat dam- age or mechanical wear. Inspect all hose connections, such as clamps and cou- plings, to make sure they are secure, and that no leaks are present. Hoses should be replaced immediately if there is any evidence of deterioration or damage.

Drive belts Inspect all drive belts for evidence of cuts, cracks, excessive wear or oil satu- ration and replace if necessary. Drive belts should be checked periodically for proper tension and adjusted as neces- sary.

ENGINE COOLANT The high-pressure cooling system has a reservoir filled with year-round antifreeze coolant. The reservoir is filled at the factory. Check the antifreeze protection and coolant level at least once a year, at the beginning of the winter season, and before traveling to a colder climate.

(cid:129) Never attempt to remove the radi- ator cap while the engine is oper- ating or hot. Doing so might lead to cooling system and engine damage and could result in seri- ous personal injury from escap- ing hot coolant or steam.

(cid:129) Turn the engine off and wait until it cools down. Use extreme care when removing the radiator cap. Wrap a thick towel around it, and turn it counterclockwise slowly to the first stop. Step back while the pressure is released from the cool- ing system. When you are sure all the pressure has been released, press down on the cap, using a thick towel, and continue turning counterclockwise to remove it.

The electric motor (cooling fan) is controlled by engine coolant tem- perature, refrigerant pressure and vehicle speed. It may sometimes operate even when the engine is not running. Use extreme caution when working near the blades of the cooling fan so that you are not injured by a rotating fan blades. As the engine coolant temperature decreases, the electric motor will automatically shut off.This is a nor- mal condition.

(cid:129) The engine in your vehicle has aluminum engine parts and must be protected by an ethylene-glycol-based coolant to pre- vent corrosion and freezing.

Contamination of either the windshield or the wiper blades with foreign matter can reduce the effectiveness of the wind- shield wipers. Common sources of con- tamination are insects, tree sap, and hot wax treatments used by some commer- cial car washes. If the blades are not wip- ing properly, clean both the window and the blades with a good cleaner or mild detergent, and rinse thoroughly with clean water.

If the battery becomes discharged in a short time (because, for example the headlights or interior lights were left on while vehicle was not in use) jump start the vehicle from another battery and run the engine at least 20 minutes at idle before driving. Do not turn off the engine for 30 minutes total of idle and/or driving as the battery may not have sufficient recharge to start.

TIRES AND WHEELS Tire care For proper maintenance, safety, and maximum fuel economy, you must always maintain recommended tire inflation pressures and stay within the load limits and weight distribution recommended for your vehicle.

Recommended cold tire inflation pressures All tire pressures (including the spare) should be checked when the tires are cold. “Cold Tires” means the vehicle has not been driven for at least three hours or driven less than one mile (1.6 km). Recommended pressures must be maintained for the best ride, vehicle handling, and minimum tire wear. For recommended inflation pressure, refer to “Tire and wheels” in section 8.

flation

Severe underinflation can lead to severe heat build-up, causing blowouts, tread separation and other tire failures that can result in the loss of vehicle control leading to severe injury or death. This risk is much higher on hot days and when driving for long periods at high speeds.

CAUTION

(cid:129) Warm tires normally exceed recommended cold tire pres- sures by 4 to 6 psi (28 to 41
kPa). Do not release air from warm tires to adjust the pres- sure or the tires will be under- inflated.

(cid:129) Be sure to reinstall the tire inflation valve caps. Without the valve cap,dirt or moisture could get into the valve core and cause air leakage. If a valve cap is missing,install a new one as soon as possible.

WARNING - Tire Inflation Overinflation or underinflation can reduce tire life, adversely affect vehicle handling, and lead to sudden tire failure. This could result in loss of vehicle control and potential injury.

Checking tire inflation pressure Check your tires once a month or more. Also, check the tire pressure of the spare tire.

How to check Use a good quality gage to check tire pressure. You can not tell if your tires are properly inflated simply by look- ing at them. Radial tires may look properly inflated even when they're underinflated. Check the tire's inflation pressure when the tires are cold. - "Cold" means your vehicle has been sitting for at least three hours or driven no more than 1 mile (1.6 km).

Maintenance

Remove the valve cap from the tire valve stem. Press the tire gage firm- ly onto the valve to get a pressure measurement. If the cold tire inflation pressure matches the recommended pressure on the tire and loading information label, no further adjust- ment is necessary. If the pressure is low, add air until you reach the rec- ommended amount. If you overfill the tire, release air by pushing on the metal stem in the center of the tire valve. Recheck the tire pressure with the tire gage. Be sure to put the valve caps back on the valve stems. They help prevent leaks by keeping out dirt and mois- ture.

Tire rotation To equalize tread wear, it is recom- mended that the tires be rotated every 7,500 miles (12,000 km) or sooner if irregular wear develops. During rotation, check the tires for correct balance. When rotating tires, check for uneven wear and damage. Abnormal wear is usually caused by incorrect tire pres- sure, improper wheel alignment, out- of-balance wheels, severe braking or severe cornering. Look for bumps or bulges in the tread or side of tire. Replace the tire if you find either of these conditions. Replace the tire if fabric or cord is visible. After rotation, be sure to bring the front and rear tire pressures to specification and check lug nut tightness.

WARNING

(cid:129) Inspect your tires frequently for proper inflation as well as wear and damage. Always use a tire pressure gauge.

(cid:129) Tires with too much or too little pressure wear unevenly caus- ing poor handling, loss of vehi- cle control, and sudden tire failure leading to accidents, injuries, and even death. The recommended cold tire pres- sure for your vehicle can be found in this manual and on the tire label located on the dri- ver's side center pillar.

(cid:129) Worn tires can cause acci- dents. Replace tires that are worn, show uneven wear, or are damaged.

(cid:129) Remember to check the pres- sure of your spare tire. HYUNDAI recommends that you check the spare every time you check the pressure of the other tires on your vehi- cle.

Maintenance

Wheel alignment and tire balance The wheels on your vehicle were aligned and balanced carefully at the factory to give you the longest tire life and best overall performance. In most cases, you will not need to have your wheels aligned again. However, if you notice unusual tire wear or your vehicle pulling one way or the other, the alignment may need to be reset. If you notice your vehicle vibrating when driving on a smooth road, your wheels may need to be rebalanced.

CAUTION

Improper wheel weights can damage your vehicle's alu- minum wheels. Use only approved wheel weights.

Tread wear indicator

Tire replacement If the tire is worn evenly, a tread wear indicator will appear as a solid band across the tread. This shows there is less than 1/16 inch (1.6 mm) of tread left on the tire. Replace the tire when this happens. Do not wait for the band to appear across the entire tread before replac- ing the tire.
