Recommended Action


No power.


The picture does not fill the screen. There are black borders on the top and bottom or on both sides or it looks stretched out. In auxiliary mode, the picture moves or scrolls. The remote control does not work.


After stopping the player, I push Play but sometimes the DVD starts where I left off and sometimes at the beginning.


The ignition might not be turned to ON/RUN or ACC/ACCESSORY. Check the display mode settings in the setup menu by pressing the display menu button on the remote control.


Check the auxiliary input connections at both devices. Check to make sure there is no obstruction between the remote control and the transmitter window. Check the batteries to make sure they are not dead or installed incorrectly. If the stop button was pressed one time, the DVD player resumes playing where the DVD was stopped. If the stop button was pressed two times, the DVD player begins to play from the beginning of the DVD.

The auxiliary source is running but there is no picture or sound.


Sometimes the wireless headphone audio cuts out or buzzes.


I lost the remote and/or the headphones. The DVD is playing, but there is no picture or sound.


Check that the RSE video screen is in the auxiliary source mode by pressing the AUX button on the remote control. Check the auxiliary input connections at both devices. Check for obstructions, low batteries, reception range, and interference from cellular telephone towers or by using a cellular telephone in the vehicle. Check that the headphones are on correctly using the L (left) and R (right) on the headphones. Check that the headphones are positioned properly with the headband across the top of the head. See your dealer for assistance. Check that the RSE video screen is sourced to the DVD player by pressing the AUX button on the remote control.

DVD Display Error Messages The DVD display error message depends on which radio the vehicle has. The video screen may display one of the following: Disc Load/Eject Error or Mechanical Error: There are disc load or eject problems. Disc Format Error or Unknown Format: The disc is inserted with the disc label wrong side up, or the disc is damaged. Disc Region Error or Disc Error: The disc is not from a correct region. No Disc Inserted: No disc is present when the Y or MEM/CD/ AUX button is pressed on the radio.


DVD Distortion Video distortion can occur when operating cellular phones, scanners, CB radios, Global Position Systems (GPSs)*, two-way radios, mobile faxes, or walkie talkies. It might be necessary to turn off the DVD player when operating one of these devices in or near the vehicle. *Excludes the OnStar® System. Cleaning the RSE Seatback Console Use only a clean cloth dampened with clean water to clean the RSE seatback console surface. Cleaning the Video Screens Use only a clean cloth dampened with clean water. Use care when touching or cleaning the screens as damage could result.


Rear Seat Audio (RSA) System Vehicles with this feature allow the rear seat passengers to listen to and control any of the music sources: radio, CDs, DVDs, or other auxiliary sources. RSA can only control music sources that the front seat passengers are not listening to, except on radios where dual control is allowed. RSA can function when the front radio is off. X displays on the infotainment system when RSA is on. Audio can be heard through wired headphones (not included) plugged into the jacks on the RSA. If the vehicle has a Rear Seat Entertainment system with wireless headphones, audio can also be heard on Channel 2 of the wireless headphones.

SRCE (Source): Press to select between the radio, CD, and if these features are available: DVD, front or rear auxiliary, HDD, USB. The front radio may override the rear selection as required. © ¨ (Seek): While listening to the radio, press to go to the previous or to the next station and stay there. If the front seat passengers are listening to the radio, this function may be inactive on some radios. Press and hold © or ¨ until “Tune” displays. Continue to press © or ¨ to tune to an individual station. Tune stays active until © or ¨ has not been pressed for several seconds. If the front seat passengers are listening to the radio, this function may be inactive on some radios.

While listening to a disc, press ¨ to go to the next track or chapter on the disc. Press © to go back to the start of the current track or chapter if more than ten seconds have played. If the front seat passengers are listening to a disc, this function may be inactive on some radios. Press and hold © or ¨ to fast reverse or fast forward. When a DVD video menu is being displayed, press © or ¨ to cursor up or down on the menu. Hold © or ¨ to cursor left or right on the menu. PROG (Program): Press to go to the next preset radio station or channel set on the main radio. If the front seat passengers are listening to the radio, this function may be inactive on some radios.


To listen to a portable audio device through the RSA, attach the portable audio device to either the front or rear auxiliary input, if available. Turn the device on, then choose the front auxiliary input with the RSA SRCE button.


P (Power): Press to turn the RSA on or off. Volume: Turn to increase or decrease the volume of the wired headphones. The left knob controls the left headphones and the right knob controls the right. Use the volume control on the headphones for wireless headphones.

When a CD or DVD audio disc is playing, press PROG to go to the beginning of the disc or display disc info. If the front seat passengers are listening to a disc, this function may be inactive on some radios. When a disc is playing in the CD or DVD changer, press and hold PROG to select the next disc, if multiple discs are loaded. If the front seat passengers are listening to a disc, this function may be inactive on some radios. The PROG button may be used to access the menu of an MP3. Once in the menu, use © or ¨ to make selections. When a DVD video menu is displayed, press PROG, or press and hold PROG to perform the menu function, then press ENTER.


Phone


Bluetooth (Overview) For vehicles equipped with Bluetooth capability, the system can interact with many cell phones, allowing: . Placement and receipt of calls in


a hands-free mode.


. Sharing of the cell phone’s address book or contact list with the vehicle.


To minimize driver distraction, before driving, and with the vehicle parked: . Become familiar with the


features of the cell phone. Organize the phone book and contact lists clearly and delete duplicate or rarely used entries. If possible, program speed dial or other shortcuts.


. Review the controls and


operation of the infotainment system.


. Pair cell phone(s) to the vehicle.


The system may not work with all cell phones. See “Pairing a Phone” in this section for more information. If the cell phone has voice dialing capability, learn to use that feature to access the address book or contact list. See “Voice Pass-Thru” in this section for more information.

Vehicles with a Bluetooth system can use a Bluetooth‐capable cell phone with a Hands‐Free Profile to make and receive phone calls. The infotainment system and voice recognition are used to control the system. The system can be used while in ON/RUN or ACC/ACCESSORY. The range of the Bluetooth system can be up to 9.1 m (30 ft). Not all phones support all functions and not all phones work with the Bluetooth system. See www.gm.com/bluetooth for more information about compatible phones. Bluetooth Controls Use the buttons located on the infotainment system and the steering wheel to operate the Bluetooth system.


Steering Wheel Controls b g (Push To Talk): Press to answer incoming calls, confirm system information, and start voice recognition.


$ i (End Call/Mute): Press to end a call, reject a call, or cancel an operation.


Infotainment System Controls For information about how to navigate the menu system using the infotainment controls, see Operation on page 7‑7. 5 / > PHONE: Press to enter the Phone main menu. Voice Recognition The voice recognition system uses commands to control the system and dial phone numbers. Noise: The system may not recognize voice commands if there is too much background noise. When to Speak: A tone sounds to indicate that the system is ready for a voice command. Wait for the tone and then speak. How to Speak: Speak clearly in a calm and natural voice.

Audio System When using the Bluetooth system, sound comes through the vehicle's front audio system speakers and overrides the audio system. Use the VOL/ O knob during a call to change the volume level. The adjusted volume level remains in memory for later calls. The system maintains a minimum volume level. Bluetooth (Infotainment Controls) For information about how to navigate the menu system using the infotainment controls, see Operation on page 7‑7. Pairing A Bluetooth‐enabled cell phone must be paired to the Bluetooth system first and then connected to the vehicle before it can be used. See the cell phone manufacturer's user guide for Bluetooth functions before pairing the cell phone. If a Bluetooth phone is not connected, calls will be made using OnStar Hands‐Free Calling, if available. Refer to the OnStar Owner's Guide for more information. A Bluetooth phone with MP3
capability cannot be connected to the vehicle as a phone and an MP3
player at the same time.


The pairing process can be started by using the voice recognition system or the controls on the infotainment system. Pairing Information: . Up to five cell phones can be


paired to the Bluetooth system. The pairing process is disabled when the vehicle is moving. The Bluetooth system links with the first available paired cell phone in the order the phone was paired.


. Only one paired cell phone can be connected to the Bluetooth system at a time.


. Pairing should only need to be


completed once, unless changes to the pairing information have been made or the phone is deleted.

Pairing a Phone 1. Press the CONFIG button. 2. Select Phone Settings. 3. Select Bluetooth. 4. Select Pair Device (Phone).


A four‐digit Personal Identification Number (PIN) appears on the display.


5. Start the pairing process on the cell phone that will be paired to the vehicle. Reference the cell phone manufacturer's user guide for information on this process. Locate the device named “Your Vehicle” in the list on the cell phone and follow the instructions on the cell phone to enter the PIN provided by the system.


6. The system prompts for a name for the phone and confirms the name provided. This name is used to indicate which phone is connected.

7. The system responds with “ has been successfully paired” after the pairing process is complete.

Linking to a Different Phone To link to a different phone, the new phone must be in the vehicle and available to be connected to the Bluetooth system before the process is started. 1. Press the CONFIG button. 2. Select Phone Settings. 3. Select Bluetooth. 4. Select Device List. 5. Select the new phone to link


to and follow the on screen prompts. If delete is selected, the highlighted phone will be deleted.

Making a Call Using Phone Book For cell phones that support the phone book feature, the Bluetooth system can use the contacts stored on your cell phone to make calls. See your cell phone's owner's guide or contact your wireless provider to find out if this feature is supported by your phone. When a cell phone supports the phone book feature, the Phone Book and Call Lists menus are automatically available. The Phone Book menu allows you to access the phone book stored in the cell phone to make a call. The Call Lists menu allows you to access the phone numbers from the Incoming Calls, Outgoing Calls, and Missed Calls menus on your cell phone to make a call.

Accepting or Declining a Call When an incoming call is received, the infotainment system mutes and a ring tone is heard in the vehicle.


Accepting a Call Turn the MENU/SELECT knob to “Answer” and press the MENU/ SELECT knob to accept the call.


Declining a Call Turn the MENU/SELECT knob to “Decline” and press the MENU/ SELECT knob to decline the call. Call Waiting Call waiting must be supported on the Bluetooth phone and enabled by the wireless service carrier to work.

To Mute a Call Turn or press the MENU/SELECT knob and select Mute Call.


To Cancel Mute Turn or press the MENU/SELECT knob and select Mute Call. Dual Tone Multi-Frequency (DTMF) Tones The in‐vehicle Bluetooth system can send numbers during a call. This is used when calling a menu‐driven phone system. 1. Turn or press the MENU/ SELECT knob and select Enter Number.


2. Enter the character sequence.

Bluetooth (Voice Recognition)


Using Voice Recognition To use voice recognition, press the b g button located on the steering wheel. The system responds differently depending on what kind of infotainment system the vehicle has. For vehicles without a navigation system, the system responds “Ready,” followed by a tone. After the tone, say a command. For vehicles with a navigation system, the system responds with a tone. After the tone say “Hands Free” to use the Bluetooth voice recognition system. The system then responds with “Ready,” followed by a tone. After the tone, say a command. For additional information say “Help” while you are in a voice recognition menu.


Pairing A Bluetooth cell phone must be paired to the Bluetooth system and then connected to the vehicle before it can be used. See your cell phone manufacturer's user guide for Bluetooth functions before pairing the cell phone. If a Bluetooth phone is not connected, calls will be made using OnStar Hands‐Free Calling, if available. Refer to the OnStar Owner's Guide for more information.

Vehicle” in the list on the cell phone. Follow the instructions on the cell phone to enter the PIN that was provided in Step 3. After the PIN is successfully entered, the system prompts you to provide a name for the paired cell phone. This name will be used to indicate which phones are paired and connected to the vehicle. See “Listing All Paired and Connected Phones” later in this section for more information. 6. Repeat Steps 1 through 5 to pair

Listing All Paired and Connected Phones The system can list all cell phones paired to it. If a paired cell phone is also connected to the vehicle, the system responds with “is connected” after that phone name. 1. Press b g. For vehicles with a navigation system, say “Hands Free,” after the tone.

Connecting to a Different Phone To connect to a different cell phone, the Bluetooth system looks for the next available cell phone in the order in which all the available cell phones were paired. Depending on which cell phone you want to connect to, you may have to use this command several times. 1. Press b g. For vehicles with a navigation system, say “Hands Free,” after the tone.


2. Say “Bluetooth.” 3. Say “Change phone.”


If another cell phone is found, the response will be “ is now connected.” If another cell phone is not found, the original phone remains connected.


Storing and Deleting Phone Numbers The system can store up to 30 phone numbers as name tags in the Hands‐Free Directory that is shared between the Bluetooth and OnStar systems. The following commands are used delete and store phone numbers. Store: This command will store a phone number, or a group of numbers as a name tag. Digit Store: This command allows a phone number to be stored as a name tag by entering the digits one at a time. Delete: This command is used to delete individual name tags. Delete All Name Tags: This command deletes all stored name tags in the Hands‐Free Calling Directory and the Destinations Directory.


Using the “Store” Command 1. Press b g. For vehicles with a navigation system, say “Hands Free,” after the tone.


2. Say “Store.” 3. Say the phone number or group of numbers you want to store all at once with no pauses, then follow the directions given by the system to save a name tag for this number.


Using the “Digit Store” Command If an unwanted number is recognized by the system, say “Clear” at any time to clear the last number. To hear all of the numbers recognized by the system, say “Verify” at any time. 1. Press b g. For vehicles with a navigation system, say “Hands Free,” after the tone.

Making a Call Calls can be made using the following commands. Dial or Call: The dial or call command can be used interchangeably to dial a phone number or a stored name tag. Digit Dial: This command allows a phone number to be dialed by entering the digits one at a time. Re‐dial: This command is used to dial the last number used on the cell phone.


Using the “Dial” or “Call” Command 1. Press b g. For vehicles with a navigation system, say “Hands Free,” after the tone.


2. Say “Dial” or “Call.” 3. Say the entire number without pausing or say the name tag.


Once connected, the person called will be heard through the audio speakers.

Using the “Digit Dial” Command The digit dial command allows a phone number to be dialed by entering the digits one at a time. After each digit is entered, the system repeats back the digit it heard followed by a tone. If an unwanted number is recognized by the system, say “Clear” at any time to clear the last number. original call. To ignore the incoming call, no action is required.

Three‐Way Calling Three‐way calling must be supported on the cell phone and enabled by the wireless service carrier. 1. While on a call, press b g. 2. Say “Three‐way call.” 3. Use the dial or call command to dial the number of the third party to be called.


4. Once the call is connected, press b g to link all callers together.


Ending a Call Press 0 c to end a call.


Muting a Call During a call, all sounds from inside the vehicle can be muted so that the person on the other end of the call cannot hear them. To mute a call, press b g, and then say “Mute Call.” To cancel mute, press b g, and then say “Un‐mute Call.” Transferring a Call Audio can be transferred between the Bluetooth system and the cell phone. The cell phone must be paired and connected with the Bluetooth system before a call can be transferred. The connection process can take up to two minutes after the ignition is turned to ON/RUN.

To Transfer Audio from the Bluetooth System to a Cell Phone During a call with the audio in the vehicle: 1. Press b g. 2. Say “Transfer Call.”


To Transfer Audio to the Bluetooth System from a Cell Phone During a call with the audio on the cell phone, press b g. The audio transfers to the vehicle. If the audio does not transfer to the vehicle, use the audio transfer feature on the cell phone. See your cell phone manufacturer's user guide for more information.

Infotainment System


Voice Pass-Thru Voice pass‐thru allows access to the voice recognition commands on the cell phone. See your cell phone manufacturer's user guide to see if the cell phone supports this feature. To access contacts stored in the cell phone: 1. Press b g. For vehicles with a navigation system, say “Hands Free,” after the tone.


2. Say “Bluetooth.” The system responds “Bluetooth ready,” followed by a tone.


3. Say “Voice.” The system responds “OK, accessing .”


The cell phone's normal prompt messages will go through their cycle according to the phone's operating.


Dual Tone Multi-Frequency (DTMF) Tones The Bluetooth system can send numbers and the numbers stored as name tags during a call. You can use this feature when calling a menu‐driven phone system. Account numbers can also be stored for use.

Clearing the System Unless information is deleted out of the in‐vehicle Bluetooth system, it will be retained indefinitely. This includes all saved name tags in the phone book and phone pairing information. Automatic Operation The system automatically controls the fan speed, air delivery, air conditioning and recirculation in order to heat or cool the vehicle to the desired temperature. When the indicator light is on, the system is in full automatic operation. If the air delivery mode or fan setting is manually adjusted, the auto indicator turns off and displays will show the selected settings. To place the system in automatic mode do the following: 1. Press AUTO. 2. Set the temperature. Allow


the system time to stabilize. Then adjust the temperature as needed for best comfort.


English units can be changed to metric units through the Driver Information Center (DIC). See Vehicle Personalization on page 5‑42.


Q / R (Driver and Passenger Temperature Controls): The temperature can be adjusted separately for the driver and the passenger. Press to increase or decrease the temperature. ZONE: Press to link all climate zone settings to the driver settings. The ZONE indicator light turns off. When the passenger settings are adjusted, the ZONE indicator light is on.


Manual Operation O (Power): Press to turn the climate control system on or off. h i (Fan Control): Press to increase or decrease the fan speed. Pressing either button cancels automatic operation and the system goes into manual mode. Press AUTO to return to automatic operation.


H G (Air Delivery Mode Control): Press to change the direction of the airflow. The current mode appears in the display screen. Changing the mode cancels the automatic operation and the system goes into manual mode. Press AUTO to return to automatic operation. To change the current mode, select one of the following: Y (Vent): Air is directed to the instrument panel outlets. \ (Bi-Level): Air is divided between the instrument panel outlets and the floor outlets. C (Tri‐Level): Air is divided between the windshield, instrument panel, and floor outlets. [ (Floor): Air is directed to the floor outlets.

Auto Defog: The climate control system may have a sensor to automatically detect high humidity inside the vehicle. When high humidity is detected, the climate control system may adjust to outside air supply and turn on the air conditioner. If the climate control system does not detect possible window fogging, it returns to normal operation. To turn Auto Defog off or on, see “Climate and Air Quality” under Vehicle Personalization on page 5‑42. % (Outside Air): Press to turn on outside air. An indicator light comes on. Outside air is circulated through the vehicle.


h (Recirculation): Press to turn on recirculation. An indicator light comes on. Air is recirculated to quickly cool the inside of the vehicle or prevent outside air and odors from entering. Automatic Air Recirculation: When the AUTO indicator light is on, the air is automatically recirculated as needed to help quickly cool the inside of the vehicle. The climate control system may have a sensor to detect air pollution. In auto recirculation control, the Air Quality Control system may operate. To adjust the sensitivity of the Air Quality Control, see “Climate and Air Quality” under Vehicle Personalization on page 5‑42.


- (Defog): Clears the windows of fog or moisture. Air is directed to the windshield and floor outlets. 8 (Upper): Air is directed to the windshield outlets. 7 (Hi-Level): Air is divided between the windshield and instrument panel outlets. 0 (Defrost): Clears the windshield of fog or frost more quickly. Air is directed to the windshield. # (Air Conditioning): Press to turn the automatic air conditioning on or off. If the fan is turned off or the outside temperature falls below freezing, the air conditioner will not run. Press AUTO to return to automatic operation and the air conditioner runs as needed. When the indicator light is on, the air conditioner runs automatically to cool the air inside the vehicle or to dry the air needed to defog the windshield faster.

Rear Window Defogger = (Rear Window Defogger): Press to turn the rear window defogger on or off. The rear window defogger turns off automatically after about 10 minutes. If turned on again it runs for about five minutes before turning off. At higher speeds, the rear window defogger may stay on continuously. The rear window defogger can be set to automatic operation. See “Climate and Air Quality” under Vehicle Personalization on page 5‑42. When Auto Rear Defog is selected, the rear window defogger turns on automatically when the interior temperature is cold and the outside temperature is about 40°F and below. The auto rear defogger turns off automatically after about 10 minutes. At higher speeds, the rear window defogger may stay on continuously.


The heated outside rearview mirrors turn on when the rear window defogger button is on and help to clear fog or frost from the surface of the mirrors. See Heated Mirrors on page 2‑22. Notice: Do not try to clear frost or other material from the inside of the front windshield and rear window with a razor blade or anything else that is sharp. This may damage the rear window defogger grid and affect your radio's ability to pick up stations clearly. The repairs wouldn't be covered by your warranty. Heated and Ventilated Seats: Press to heat or ventilate the seat. See Heated and Ventilated Front Seats on page 3‑11.


Remote Start Climate Control Operation: For vehicles with the remote vehicle start feature, the climate control system may run when the vehicle is started remotely. The system uses the driver's previous settings to heat or cool the inside of the vehicle. See Remote Vehicle Start on page 2‑10. The rear window defogger turns on if it is cold outside. Sensors The solar sensor, located on top of the instrument panel near the windshield, monitors the solar heat. The climate control system uses the sensor information to adjust the temperature, fan speed, recirculation, and air delivery mode for best comfort. If the sensor is covered, the automatic climate control system may not work properly.

Press the ZONE button on the front climate control system to turn off the rear blower and match the rear settings to the front. The ZONE indicator light and rear climate control display will turn off. The rear climate control can be turned off by pressing i.


Independent Mode: This mode directs rear seating airflow according to the settings of the rear controls. The front climate control system must be on for the rear climate control to work. To turn on the rear climate control from rear seating, press any rear climate control button. The rear climate control will not work if the front climate control system is in defrost.

Automatic Operation AUTO: Press N until the AUTO setting is selected to control the rear temperature, air delivery, and fan speed automatically.


Manual Operation h i (Fan Control): Press these buttons on the rear seat audio control panel to increase or decrease the airflow. Pressing h when the system is off will turn the system on. The air delivery mode remains in its previous setting. −/+ (Temperature Control): Press these buttons to adjust the temperature of the air flowing into the passenger area. Press + for warmer air and press − for cooler air. N (Air Delivery Mode Control): Press the mode button to change the direction of the airflow. Multiple presses will cycle through the delivery selections.


Air Vents Move the sliding knob on the air outlets up and down or left and right to direct the airflow. Use the thumbwheels near the air outlets to open or close off the airflow.


Operation Tips . Clear away any ice, snow,


or leaves from air inlets at the base of the windshield that could block the flow of air into the vehicle.


. Keep the path under the front seats clear of objects to help circulate the air inside the vehicle more effectively.


. Use of non‐GM approved hood deflectors can adversely affect the performance of the system. Check with your dealer before adding equipment to the outside of the vehicle.


Maintenance


Passenger Compartment Air Filter The filter removes dust, pollen, and other airborne irritants from outside air that is pulled into the vehicle. The filter should be replaced as part of routine scheduled maintenance. To find out what type of filter to use, see Maintenance Replacement Parts on page 11‑9. 1. Open the glove box completely

Defensive Driving Defensive driving means “always expect the unexpected.” The first step in driving defensively is to wear the safety belt. See Safety Belts on page 3‑15.

Drunk Driving


{ WARNING Drinking and then driving is very dangerous. Your reflexes, perceptions, attentiveness, and judgment can be affected by even a small amount of alcohol. You can have a serious — or even fatal — collision if you drive after drinking. Do not drink and drive or ride with a driver who has been drinking. Ride home in a cab; or if you are with a group, designate a driver who will not drink.

Death and injury associated with drinking and driving is a global tragedy. Alcohol affects four things that anyone needs to drive a vehicle: judgment, muscular coordination, vision, and attentiveness. Police records show that almost 40 percent of all motor vehicle-related deaths involve alcohol. In most cases, these deaths are the result of someone who was drinking and driving. In recent years, more than 17,000 annual motor vehicle-related deaths have been associated with the use of alcohol, with about 250,000 people injured.


For persons under 21, it is against the law in every U.S. state to drink alcohol. There are good medical, psychological, and developmental reasons for these laws. The obvious way to eliminate the leading highway safety problem is for people never to drink alcohol and then drive. Medical research shows that alcohol in a person's system can make crash injuries worse, especially injuries to the brain, spinal cord, or heart. This means that when anyone who has been drinking — driver or passenger — is in a crash, that person's chance of being killed or permanently disabled is higher than if the person had not been drinking.

Control of a Vehicle The following three systems help to control the vehicle while driving — brakes, steering, and accelerator. At times, as when driving on snow or ice, it is easy to ask more of those control systems than the tires and road can provide. Meaning, you can lose control of the vehicle. See Traction Control System (TCS) on page 9‑34 and StabiliTrak® System on page 9‑36. Adding non‐dealer accessories can affect vehicle performance. See Accessories and Modifications on page 10‑3.

Braking See Brake System Warning Light on page 5‑22. Braking action involves perception time and reaction time. Deciding to push the brake pedal is perception time. Actually doing it is reaction time. Average reaction time is about three‐fourths of a second. But that is only an average. It might be less with one driver and as long as two or three seconds or more with another. Age, physical condition, alertness, coordination, and eyesight all play a part. So do alcohol, drugs, and frustration. But even in three‐fourths of a second, a vehicle moving at 100 km/h (60 mph) travels 20 m (66 ft). That could be a lot of distance in an emergency, so keeping enough space between the vehicle and others is important.


And, of course, actual stopping distances vary greatly with the surface of the road, whether it is pavement or gravel; the condition of the road, whether it is wet, dry, or icy; tire tread; the condition of the brakes; the weight of the vehicle; and the amount of brake force applied. Avoid needless heavy braking. Some people drive in spurts — heavy acceleration followed by heavy braking — rather than keeping pace with traffic. This is a mistake. The brakes might not have time to cool between hard stops. The brakes will wear out much faster with a lot of heavy braking. Keeping pace with the traffic and allowing realistic following distances eliminates a lot of unnecessary braking. That means better braking and longer brake life.


If the engine ever stops while the vehicle is being driven, brake normally but do not pump the brakes. If the brakes are pumped, the pedal could get harder to push down. If the engine stops, there will still be some power brake assist but it will be used when the brake is applied. Once the power assist is used up, it can take longer to stop and the brake pedal will be harder to push. Adding non‐dealer accessories can affect vehicle performance. See Accessories and Modifications on page 10‑3.

Steering


Power Steering If power steering assist is lost because the engine stops or the power steering system is not functioning, the vehicle can be steered but it will take more effort. Steering Tips It is important to take curves at a reasonable speed. Traction in a curve depends on the condition of the tires and the road surface, the angle at which the curve is banked, and vehicle speed. While in a curve, speed is the one factor that can be controlled. If there is a need to reduce speed, do it before entering the curve, while the front wheels are straight. Try to adjust the speed so you can drive through the curve. Maintain a reasonable, steady speed. Wait to accelerate until out of the curve, and then accelerate gently into the straightaway.


Steering in Emergencies There are times when steering can be more effective than braking. For example, you come over a hill and find a truck stopped in your lane, or a car suddenly pulls out from nowhere, or a child darts out from between parked cars and stops right in front of you. These problems can be avoided by braking — if you can stop in time. But sometimes you cannot stop in time because there is no room. That is the time for evasive action — steering around the problem. The vehicle can perform very well in emergencies like these. First apply the brakes. See Braking on page 9‑4. It is better to remove as much speed as possible from a collision. Then steer around the problem, to the left or right depending on the space available.


An emergency like this requires close attention and a quick decision. If holding the steering wheel at the recommended 9 and 3 o'clock positions, it can be turned a full 180 degrees very quickly without removing either hand. But you have to act fast, steer quickly, and just as quickly straighten the wheel once you have avoided the object. The fact that such emergency situations are always possible is a good reason to practice defensive driving at all times and wear safety belts properly.

Off-Road Recovery The vehicle's right wheels can drop off the edge of a road onto the shoulder while driving.


If the level of the shoulder is only slightly below the pavement, recovery should be fairly easy. Ease off the accelerator and then, if there is nothing in the way, steer


so that the vehicle straddles the edge of the pavement. Turn the steering wheel 8 to 13 cm (3 to 5 in), about one-eighth turn, until the right front tire contacts the pavement edge. Then turn the steering wheel to go straight down the roadway.


Loss of Control Let us review what driving experts say about what happens when the three control systems — brakes, steering, and acceleration — do not have enough friction where the tires meet the road to do what the driver has asked. In any emergency, do not give up. Keep trying to steer and constantly seek an escape route or area of less danger.


Skidding In a skid, a driver can lose control of the vehicle. Defensive drivers avoid most skids by taking reasonable care suited to existing conditions, and by not overdriving those conditions. But skids are always possible. The three types of skids correspond to the vehicle's three control systems. In the braking skid, the wheels are not rolling. In the steering or cornering skid, too much speed or steering in a curve causes tires to slip and lose cornering force. And in the acceleration skid, too much throttle causes the driving wheels to spin. If the vehicle starts to slide, ease your foot off the accelerator pedal and quickly steer the way you want the vehicle to go. If you start steering quickly enough, the vehicle may straighten out. Always be ready for a second skid if it occurs.

Driving on Wet Roads Rain and wet roads can reduce vehicle traction and affect your ability to stop and accelerate. Always drive slower in these types of driving conditions and avoid driving through large puddles and deep‐standing or flowing water.

Wet brakes can cause crashes. They might not work as well in a quick stop and could cause pulling to one side. You could lose control of the vehicle.

After driving through a large puddle of water or a car/vehicle wash, lightly apply the brake pedal until the brakes work normally. Flowing or rushing water creates strong forces. Driving through flowing water could cause the vehicle to be carried away. If this happens, you and other vehicle occupants could drown. Do not ignore police warnings and be very cautious about trying to drive through flowing water.


Of course, traction is reduced when water, snow, ice, gravel, or other material is on the road. For safety, slow down and adjust your driving to these conditions. It is important to slow down on slippery surfaces because stopping distance is longer and vehicle control more limited. While driving on a surface with reduced traction, try to avoid sudden steering, acceleration, or braking, including reducing vehicle speed by shifting to a lower gear. Any sudden changes could cause the tires to slide. You might not realize the surface is slippery until the vehicle is skidding. Learn to recognize warning clues — such as enough water, ice, or packed snow on the road to make a mirrored surface — and slow down when you have any doubt. Remember: Antilock brakes help avoid only the braking skid.

Hydroplaning Hydroplaning is dangerous. Water can build up under the vehicle's tires so they actually ride on the water. This can happen if the road is wet enough and you are going fast enough. When the vehicle is hydroplaning, it has little or no contact with the road. There is no hard and fast rule about hydroplaning. The best advice is to slow down when the road is wet. Coasting downhill in N (Neutral) or with the ignition off is dangerous. The brakes will have to do all the work of slowing down and they could get so hot that they would not work well. You would then have poor braking or even none going down a hill. You could crash. Always have the engine running and the vehicle in gear when going downhill.


. Stay in your own lane. Do not swing wide or cut across the center of the road. Drive at speeds that let you stay in your own lane. Top of hills: Be alert — something could be in your lane (stalled car, accident).
