Can't wait till my debut in April :tunes:...that $60 for extra drivers is really rough though

Yeah, apparently didn't have it before :) I've had some big discussions about this (as we have split the car 3 ways) and to best way to do it is to double enter the car and the second entry is $40 less. Still, its pretty rough.

s13 is the same as lantra (15") which again is the same as excel being 114.3. although you would have to check offset and tyre size

trackattack
Post #517

yeah i was thinking that factory mags of the Nissan might be a good fit.
I think that they are +40 which should be in range for the excel.
hoping to trial fit some this weekend if my mate hasn't sold his silvia by then.

Can you change the wheel size to 16 max, there is alot more out there in 16 inch, and tyres are pretty much the same price

wasas
Post #519

15's make it a challenge, other wise it'd be too easy

Also, we are busting balls to get our car ready for the first circuit races in a few weeks, hows everyone else looking for it?

Beannie
Post #520

keep it to max 15". maybe next year rules can be looked into and changed.

people are already spending heaps to get 15's on the car... this is supposed to be a 'cheap' racing series

if it is going to stay at 15" max then I will run adapters and use my old rx7 wheels

more than one way to skin a cat

trackattack
Post #522

we only went to 15" because a few of the guys had cars that came with 15" wheels and there didnt seem any point in making people spend money to go back to a smaller wheel with less tyre options.

16" will just make it more expensive.
15" will be that maximum wheel diameter unless there is a very good cost reason to change.

I am currently still running 13" wheels and the tyres that they came with

15" is more than big enough for such a small car.

the Gemini series cars are (have always been) using 13's

What was the contact details of that fella buying excels at auctions again? Sorry I couldn't see it in the last few pages.

Has anyone bought theirs from him? I understand no rwc/rego or anything. I will be using this as a road car as well so would like to get something that is basically in rwc condition. Wasn't sure if I should go through him or pay a bit more and try and find a semi-riced up one already hopefully with exhaust/air filter and rims good to go for racing

03osh, we have been running a spreadsheet to keep tabs on what our car is currently costing us. so far its about 3k, with about another 1000 being put in this week.

Brendo, it looks like we'll be ready to race circuit  the few final things needing doing will be sorted this weekend/next. Cant wait!

The beauty of the Excels is that you can come and have some fun for $500.00 in a stock std one like I did last week.
I was pretty happy with 72 seconds on the shitty tyres and old shocks in the car, probably more time would come with more seat time as well.

If your on a budget then stick with the sprints, throw some springs and tyres at the car.
Most of the guys who were running 69's last week only had off the rack pedders springs and achilles tyres.

cage and exhaust next week, then paint should be good for mid April

Jeff have you seen yours with the cage in yet? will you be able to refit the dash in a modified form?

I haven't seen it, but should only require a couple of holes where the 2 front legs pass through the dash.

i wrote up a price list for ours, and you should be able to do everythign aloud in the rules for under $4000 including the car (if you get it for $1000 or less)

a little bit more on top of that if you go with adjustable konis

I haven't bought any parts yet, but at a guess

level 1 car - $500 - $1000 - stock std crappy tyres and old suspension 72 seconds at lakeside
level 2 car - $1000 - $1500 - springs and tyres - 69 seconds
level 3 car - $1500 - $2000 - plus shocks and swaybars - 68 seconds
level 4 car - $2500 - $3000 - add 1/2 cage harness and seat - 67 seconds
level 5 car - $3500 - $4000 - full cage and a few other safety extras - ??

anybody who spends much more than 4k for a top level circuit racing car with full cage is trying too hard !

someone is getting serious.....

I think there is only 2 panels that match colourwise on mine, however I only paid $250
I think if you want everything you will struggle for under $4k

Full Cage $1000
Springs $280
Shocks $420
Sway bar $200
Seat $500
Harness $300
Brakes $300 including new pads and rotors
Fluids $200
Tyres $400

If you went half cage you will save $500

fair enough, rub it back and throw some plain acrylic onto it, bit of a buff and probably look like a new car.

then add the little stuff.
timing belt 100
water pump 100
rims 200
seat fabrication to get it installed 250+
engineers cert (if you keep it road reg) 250
safety bits for the track (battery iso, battery box, cage padding, secondeary bonnet pints etc ) 200
plugs 100
leads 75

it keeps going..

If you dont need to keep it road reg you an wipe off about 1000 of your total cost.
and a basic stripped car running lakeside would be beyond the 72's.... (well it was for us, but we've never driven the track before). a decent driver would make all the difference

All these prices are starting with dead stock mega cheap cars though. Other option is to buy one that already has some stuff done like exhaust, filter, wheels, suspension. Probably pay more like $2000ish for a car initially but I figure to get this stuff done new is going to cost about that anyway.

exhaust $250-400
filter $50
shocks $420
springs $280
wheels $200
tyres $400

That is why I am thinking of buying a slightly riced up one to start with.

So absolutely no body mods? Not even little riced up bodykits? Jeez, those things look terrible.

I am pretty sure my car will be copping a matt black paint job  Unless it actually has good paint to start with but not many of them around.

trackattack
Post #543

best of the 2 dry runs that I got my white thing did 72.36 and it had absolutely no grip whatsoever.
you guys would do 72's maybe 71's with the same stocky pos with a few laps under your belt.

remember its not a race to see who is the fastest to build a car
improve the handling slowly as your track skills improve, watch the times drop every time that you go.
Ultimately sprints are a race against yourself, use these little cars to improve your race craft.

as far as cost goes everybody will have different levels of acceptable cars.
you will notice the first thing I did was build a good cage.
other guys went out and improved the handling & grip on their cars.

Its like sex, do it slow and you will enjoy it more

you are allowed to fit the big wing that come as an option on the later ones.
not sure that the cornering advantage would outweigh the extra weight though ????

Booked in for April
Screw this talk of 4k!...$500 car, $50 pod filter $200 exhaust $100 new spark plugs and service...another $350 for 6 months rego....eventually throw on some tyres and perhaps 1/2 cage for hopefully $800 combined and i'll call it quits @ 2k untill something goes boom.....really sucks being a uni student, entry fee's alone are almost 2 weeks work
