so does any one know if your aloud to fit a bonnet scoop/vents and have a hole in the bonnet for it?

Yer i wanted to cut one too because my pod is a bit too big and it hits the bonnet when it's closed.

I did the CV's on my car last night, turned out to be pretty straightforward which was good.
This is my first front wheel drive car, so far they seem pretty straight forward to work on.

Not sure if I will have it ready for this weekend or not, water pump needs doing as well.

We have 6 Excels entered for this Sunday
entry list is here - clicky clicky

just looking on car sales.. they seem to be averaging $1500 with high 100ooo low 200ooo on the clock... that sound right?? seems pricey for a coke can

I would have said between $300 to $1000
condition ranging from needing mechanical work and shitty paint through to a road worthy condition one.
I have seen quite a few sell on ebay between $500 to $800
the dear ones dont sell and get relisted cheaper

there is an early one on ebay for $100 at the moment which looks quite tidy, and another one for $50 with a fucked clutch.

you could also try Park Ridge Wrecking at Loganlea, they are advertising excel parts and wreckers often buy whole cars that may suit what we are doing.

is there any common problems or things that should be addressed on these things before taking them out?

The cv's are probably the most common issue, you will hear them clacking when taking a tight corner at low speed.
the water pumps are often stuffed on the high k ones as well.

other than that they seem to be a pretty tough engine
mine has 292'000 k's on it and made 65hp :) on the dyno at RDP

We'll be running as well as. so there's another one to add... havn't yet registered.

Has anyone managed to get a set of 205's on 15's fitted yet? I'm trying to find some rims and want to make sure they will fit.

Hey Wasas,

If your coming this sunday confirm as soon as you can.
It keeps the time keepers happy if we get the entries in as early as possible (and saves on late fee's)
plus I am getting the numbers made up as each car enters, so need to give AMS notice to get the sticker printing done.

I trial fitted the wheels off my datsun as they have the same PCD, but as suspected the RWD offset doesnt suit.
also the nuts that hold the hub/rotor on the excel foul on the back of the datsun wheels which are not recessed.

has anybody tried a set of stock wheels off a 180sx ?

I measured it up and I seriously doubt they will fit. Bloke down at the wheel shop agrees....but i'm happy for someone to prove me wrong :)

so whats everyone running for rubber then!?
I've found some 15's that fit, with a 35 offset. is it the rubber width thats the issue? slightly rolled guards?

Good job on finding 15's with the right offset, centre-hub diameter and stud pattern.
I did a bit of looking around at different wheel / tyre options but it all got a bit hard (and expensive). Think i might just go the easy option and run 175...not alot about but Pirelli and Yokohama do have something half decent.

trackattack
Post #318

I wouldnt stress about tyres for the first few runs, as long as what you have is in good condition.

would there be an issue if we bought a single cam auto and put a twincam manual into that car?

wasas
Post #320

putting a tiwn cam into a x1... that would be a issue. spose as long at the motor came in that model, and it can be purchased in that config it'd be alright.

NISMOgemini
Post #321

anyone looked in to 195 50 15?

wasas
Post #322

they fit, and apparently run a very similar rolling diameter to the stock 165/70/13's. I guess if 195's fit the 205's wont be far off, but I'll let someone else try first :)

NISMOgemini
Post #323

195 should be more then enough with a 7" rim. which is excellent.. cos i have a set in the shed spare ET38

the only reason ive bought an excel was because of this thread :)

:) all of us mate, all of us :wavey:
wait until you get a cage then the fun will really begin with the circuit racing !

NO.
99.9% of our events will be AASA
The few that we do that are CAMS (like Mt Cotton) you will need a CAMS Level2s license.
to get your L2S you can join any CAMS car club, doesnt have to be MGCCQ
I will try to make day licenses available for CAMS events if I can.

sounds good buddy

i may come out to QR on sat (or lakeside on sun) to have a chat and feel whats going on. I could have the car ready but i'll wait until 14th mar at lakeside to get out there :)

trackattack
Post #329

I dont know if my excel will be ready this weekend or not, going to start on the water pump tonight
so I'll either be in a white X3 2 door excel or a black datsun 1600.

I hope the weather holds - http://www.trackattack.com.au/weather showing scattered storms.....
The sprints will still run in the rain as long as there isn't standing water on the track.

Beannie
Post #330

im guessing it would be ideal to have new water pump and cv's before the racing? :)

trackattack
Post #331

the ones in my car were fucked when i bought it.
i suppose you cant expect much for $500.00 and 292'000 k's :)

I wouldnt bother replacing the water pump unless its leaking or the car is overheating
If you inspect the CV's and they are sound and not clicking then they could last for ages.

although you need to bear in mind that the car is going to get driven harder than it ever has
so parts that seem OK now may get rooted after a couple of race meetings.

trackattack
Post #332

whilst I think of it if you get a chance swap out the brake fluid, its probably 100 years old.
I dont think the excels will be as much of an issue, but if the fluid in the datsun is more than 12 months old it starts to boil away when i race the car at QR. Lakeside is a bit easier on the driveline than QR, just remember to stay on the blackstuff.

what a good price to pay for a 98 twin cam that needs a new water pump????

trackattack
Post #334

we are making up some more race numbers.
anybody coming on the 14th have a requested race number ?
ta Jeff

wasas
Post #335

$3.50

srsly, about 750. I wouldn't go over that, but aim for $500 and try for a bargain.
we paid 1k for ours with no rego or anything, but the nic was pretty good, nothing wrong with it engine/g'box/suspension wise.
new pump is ~60, and a timing belt kit is about 120 (got one yesterday from ultracheapauto on ebay, Allan seems like a alright guy).
