Australian entertainer Russell Gilbert has mourned the loss of his 'angel' and spoken out about spotting the signs of mental illness after his partner of 19 years was found dead in a hotel room.

Rochelle Nolan, Mr Gilbert's fiancée and defecto wife, was found dead at the Crown Casino hotel in Southbank, a central Melbourne suburb, on Thursday afternoon - national R U OK Day.

She had booked in for a short stay and police confirmed they are not treating the death as suspicious.

Mr Gilbert, 55, posted a heartbreaking tribute on Instagram, saying he would remember his long-term partner, who was aged in her forties, 'before she got broken'.

He said: 'To all our friends, my partner of 19 years passed away. She was an angel, mental illness is part of life, I was just trying to look after her.

'Saw what was going on and she had put a plan in place, look out for someone close, when you see the signs (pray emoji).

'Thanks to you all I will miss her. RIP Rochelle. Please don't worry for me. I will remember Rochelle before she got broken.'

The comedian and radio host also opened up about losing his sister when he was just 12-years-old.

He said: 'Thank you to all our friends, I learned how to grieve as a boy when I lost my sister Debbie at 12, she was 13.

'We were best friends and it took me a long time to get over that, my mother and father helped me to learn how to grieve correctly.'

Mr Gilbert shared the Lifeline crisis support number and called on Australians to ring the number if they see the danger signs

Ms Nolan was tragically discovered on a day that the nation raised awareness of suicide, to reach out to those contemplating suicide or experiencing depression.

Mr Gilbert, from Melbourne in Victoria, found national fame in the late Eighties as a performer on The Comedy Company.

He is known for his regular appearances in Hey Hey It's Saturday and Thank God You're Here.

The TV star was also such a hit as a contestant on singing celebrity contest It Takes Two in 2007 that his exit from the show was described as the 'biggest eviction shock in TV history'.

He has previously spoken out about his gambling problem, saying he once sold a house and spent the money before buying a new one.
