Yeh, I'll have to get it to grow faster!
I used a flash on myself and it was a 10 second exposure. Damn full moon, 30 seconds over-exposed it! Yeh it's spray can, I'm chucking away, that place is litered with them everywhere.
Have another look at my previous post (the written part), I take it that's a yes...

If u like that style u'll probably like these other ones I did (look at number 7 & 8): https://www.boostcruising.com/forums/index....entry1280208429

yeah thats a definate yes.. i was going to say flash too.. should have stuck with that answer.. for the ones in your link did you have to set the flash off more then once for each silhouette?

vp_s_wagon
Post #328

Nah mate, one exposure (3min, f.22) and i just set the flash off once to get the sillhouette then moved on to the next one.

Cheers for the feedback. What do u guys think.. keep or ditch the graffiti style?

Nickle
Post #329

I think keep it up. If you find a good location then why not give it a shot? From what I've seen they keep improving... It doesn't have to be graffiti every time though. But its a wicked starting point.

i really like the silhouette graffiti shots, really captures the feel of the sort of mysterious and dark graffiti culture IMO.
I think in the last shot of u throwing away the can it would have looked a little better if you had the flash set up on a tripod in front of you (if thats even possible...) so as to capture the full silhouette, as your head gets lost in the darkness.
I say keep going with it mate, its something different so you will always have ppl that dont like it.
Have you thought about maybe using different coloured filters on the flash to match or contrast with the colour of the piece you are in front of? might look a bit stupid, the idea just popped into my head as i was writing tongue.gif

Cheers Hoges,
I like the idea of the colored flash. I'll definatley give that a shot.
I cant do the flash on the tripod atm but if i have a mate with me i can get them to do it, so that could be cool. Thanks for the Idea, i hadnt thought of it.

1. 2. 3. 4.
5.

Not all of them are silhouette/graff style so u might like one of them at least.

really like the first lot you posted especially 5. 6. 7. they look awesome, almost exactly what you would expect to see, good work.

next time your on msn ill have to get you to give us a run down on how you do these ones.

good work like always mate

I will do... If I ever decide 2 go on msn... I fukin hate it, i almost never go on.

They are pretty easy though. It's just a 30sec, f.8 and a handheld flash going off at the wall, creating a silhouette of the person in front (me), I just do 3 or 4 in the 30secs and viola, a cool graffiti shot.
One tip is to shoot in RAW though. If u need to increase shadow/exposure etc. in JPEG it looks really shit for this kind of shot if u use JPEG. Much better off doing it in RAW as it is really neat and even, not grouped pixels like in JPEG which form ugly obvious lines in the flash light.

Harry that last set is decent but I think most of them lack good composure, the eerie feeling and colours are great but I find that I have trouble working out what the focus of each shot is. I think I like the 2nd one the most. The angle is good and the clouds are spectacular.

`Nova
Post #338

agreed with rainey about the second shot.. but i also like shot number four.. my eyes may bounce around it a little but theres enough not happening in the shot for me to appreciate it.. you have a continuation.. lines.. the fence, the over pass, the power pole/structure.. the passing car.. dont know if it sounds like i'm talking out my arse.. i've always been a big fan of things like that though.. might be because i can't draw a straight line unsure.gif

If u are wondering what the focus of the shot is, I'll give you a clue... It starts with 'm' and ends with 'e' and there is a flash around it's silhouette... Look for the preedy lights. The surrounding is not supposed to be the focal point, it is there for it's colors and gloomy feel, not to be looked at closely.

Thanks for the feedback though, I just thought it was a bit obvoious what the focal point/s were.

Got my little fisheye attachment today. Just a Cheapo one ($100, can't go wrong).
It's not too bad (for $100) but it's by no means good.

What do u think? (of the lens, not the shot)

Cheers guys,
Thanks heaps for the comments.

Well as I said, I bought a fisheye (adaptor thingo). So I couldn't resist trying it out.
While I was there I met some hardcore preservationists (hippies), they were actually really cool smile.gif

anyway, here they are:
1. 2. 3.
I cant decide between the cropped and un-cropped versions in these two: 4. (un-cropped) 5. (cropped)

i just bought one of those adaptor fisheye's also (would have bought a proper one but having a non-slr camera and all i can't)... you seem to have put yours to better use though.

I like the cropped version of number 4 in the last lot.

Never really understood the whole fish-eye thing sorry....I guess it's cool for small areas that you want to get as much of it in as possible (realestate photo's) I must admit though that there is a lot of scope for "arty" shots.

Nova,
Thanks heaps mate I am edging towards the cropped one too. Get a fisheye! They are so much fun!
I love getting feedback, it is great when ppl put in the effort. cheers
mate

Major,
Cheers, I like being a bit different. I have pretty bad insomnia so I generally dont sleep before 1-2am, no matter what the situation or how tired I am. It's a pain in the ass, but it is good for photos. I leave at about 9-10pm, come home about midnight-1am. It's a cool time to be out. Very interesting.

Mighty Toy Boy,
How much was urs? Can't wait to see the results.

Lance,
Yeh, they chose the first pose in front of the kombi, I chose the 2nd one (4 and 5) one. They were great, really friendly (genuinley friendly, not drunk!) and stoked to be in a photo.

Boostmiester,
It's not good for real estate because it warps things, thats the whole Idea. if you want wide angle u buy a lense like urs, if u want a fisheye effect u buy a fisheye.
I use it purley for the effect. I don't know if you have watched many skate/graffiti videos, you will notice that they are ALL filmed in fisheye. It is a lense type that is so commonly associated with that whole culture, so I thought I should get one and try some shots with one if I am going to do that style.
Have a look at this site, I get alot of ideas from it. 90% is done with a fisheye : http://www.arinahnell.com/photos.htm

Cheers

A few more shots from the new fisheye.
It is 1.40am and I just got back.
2 hours and I only took 4 photos!

At least 3 of them were decent.

1. 2. 3.

What do u think of the fisheye effect on this kind of shot?

Dunno how I missed this one ages ago, must be hiding amongst your other good work, but this one is very well done!

IPB Image

I did one of these recently and apparently the overpass I was on was a touch too busy...nothing but a shakey shots. I put it down to either a crap tripod or too many heavy buses!

You have done very nicely with this one tho, as well as all the others. Keep it up Harry!

The new lens looks like a lot of fun. Would be awesome with a water cam. People from school have been having some fun with those lately but I haven't had a chance so I'm so jealous.
But yeah they're looking good Harry. Of the two undecided hippie ones I think I'm going to go against the crowd and say I like the uncropped one. I think its because their faces are blurred making them part of the whole effect of the shot..

Casey,
Cheers mate, it's good fun.

Twist,
Lol, yeh.
Don't worry mate. I know when the fisheye is not needed (most of the time!)
I just wanted to test the little bugger out. I only got it for a certain style of shot. Although I wouldn't mind doing this one--> IPB Image
with a fisheye. Just to see how it looks, if the lights bend around the fisheye etc.

PSI,
Yeh I buggered that one up with the flash on the top. I did one too many (flashes) and it screwed the two shadows up.
Cheers for the feedback.

Jimeegee,
Yeh I normally think that kind of shot is a bit simplistic unless it actually has good lines (not just some lights, going anywhere!) that lead niceley through the shot. So when I walked over that overpass i thought. Why not!
The heavy tripod helps heaps, I had heaps of busses going over when i did it and I was fine. Maybe try weighting it down a bit. Also remeber to use a very small aperture so u get nice clean lines and not glare or over-exposure.

Nickle,
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
It is great fun using the fisheye. Come and try it out some time soon.
I had never thought of that with the un-cropped. i agree. I think I am going to keep it like that.
Thanks Heaps.

Cheers for all the feedback. I love it when people make the effort. Thanks.

Yeh I know what u mean. It can get old fast.
The only reason I had so many done with it is because it was the 1st day I had it.

The only type of pics i will be using it for are ones that I cant do with the normal 18-55.
Like this one. It was too close so I needed the fisheye's wide angle --->

I think in the first pic the third shadow/person on the right hand side was too much the just the two would have looked better imo.

I have had some mixed responses to my graffiti silhouette shots. Some have said they like them some have said they don't, no real middle ground.
I was just wondering what people think of them and if they think I should persue that style.

If u like them, I found an awesome place to try some more out...
Here:

I was thinking about doing some shots kinda like this:

What do u think, should I keep up this style (as well as all the other stuff I do) or go for something different?

Cheers
Harry

i love that style of photography there are a few places like that in brisbane (if you live here)
