just wondering if u could turbo a gokart and how u would go about it. wat size turbo would u use for a 250cc bike engine

u will need a really small one, Honda city turbo'd r tiny and they are 4 times bigger than ur motor.

what engine is it exactly?

im just asking in theory. i have no idea im just looking at doing a go kart project. and just tossing around a couple of ideas

everyone seems to toss around with this project idea, i should build some!!

i would suggest a healty 4 stroke motor of the 250cc size and a garrett GT12 turbo..

is the kart for off road or onroad?

i had 2 off road ones, one a honda oddysey and the other was a 'home made' 5spd 125cc twin cylinder 2stroke with powerband, yummy!

won't cornering be a bit hard cause if u hit boost in a kart, it wont be like a car will it?

You would need a fairly small turbo, and probably a four stroke motor to begin with, if that isn't what you already have. Most two stroke motorcycle engines use "reed valves" to control the induction of air and fuel into the motor, and I'm unsure on how well these tiny plastic valves will hold up to even a few pounds of boost. Also, u would end up with a very oily turbo, as a two stroke uses oil and fuel mixtures ignited together in the combustion chamber. It's a great idea though. Although a few of us have probably already tinkered with it... Good luck

yeah that go kart is crazy i would like to no what engine is in it. Also with putting a turbo on a 2stroke engine doest work to well you would need to change the valves from plastic to metal and you would only be able to run a few pounds of boost. plus im unsure on what sort of compression the run so you would have to look into that because i have been told that 4stroke motorbike engines run high compressions. but i could be wrong

Don't know how to do it but you must be able to turbo a 2 stroke. Overseas there are some 2 stroke diesels and as far as I know they are still turbo'd, but we are talking some serious truck technology here.
you can get special ceramic reed valves which would stand up a bit better. Soem 2 strokes also ran a rotary disk valve???

It probably wouldn't work too well because the intake gases, being at a higher pressure than the exhaust gases would flow out of the exhaust port before it closes, because in a 2 stroke engine the exhaust port opens, then the intake port, then the intake port closes before the exhaust port.

And the turbo wouldn't get all oily if it used a blow-through setup. Would it matter anyway?

The engine is either a GSXR 1100 or a Kawasaki of similar vintage. eg 4 cylinder, twin cam road bike.

a mate and I are almost finished building a home made off road buggy
it was running a 250cc 4 stroke motor and a very dodgy swivel type front steering setup, this time round it's a 500cc motor, 6 spd sequential gearbox and a steering rack/box setup from a gemini and motorbike disc brakes

we tossed around the idea of turbo'ing it too, but in the end just decided to go for the bigger engine

we wanna start a new one from scratch and use an R1 motor next time if we come accross a crashed one for the right price smile.gif

i am currently doing this to a 400cc 4 stroke engine. You will encounter problems with cooling and lubricating the turbo. I am looking at an IHI and a garret gt12.

ofcorse u can turbo any conbustion engine intake and exhaust as long as u have enough power from the engine to spool the turbo ect

the suzuki capacino is a tiny motor but at 900cc the turbo is probably still too big?

A standard gearbox race kart holds the lap record and the fastest top speed at mount Panarama in bathurst...top speed 320kmh.

that is a 125cc race kart that you could pick up an sick but little bit older one for $3500.... when you ass is less than an inch off the ground and you can do 320kmh...you have to ask your self 2 questions
1. do I really want to be siting on a home made kart at 320kmh
2. do I really need a turbo

2 strokes dont have an oil feed for a turbo which mean sur turbo would last about 5 minutes! unless u could set up somke sort of external container which pumps pil into ur turbo and then cycles it back to ur container. i know of a mate that put a turbo on a scooter and only got 2psi out of it and didnt really feel strong

I know some TRUCKS are two stroke turbocharged diesels but they probably have a totally different design than a 250cc moto engine. If you replaced the reeds, then maybe, but as someone said, you could get unburnt gasses flowing out your exhaust

personally i think u'd be best off with a small 2stroke non turbo, they still fukn cain.

also if u only wanted the turbo for the psssccchht factor, just buy a shitty little 4 stroke engine and turbo it.

depends on what you want really.

personally i'd be looking 4 a 2nd hand racing 2stroke cart, the good body is what your really after, u can always do engine work, but good engineering on the frame is VITAL!

I'd look for a 600cc or 1000cc super sports (R6, GSX-R, et al) motor and gearbox from a wreck. Much easier and will work a lot better than a turbo'd 250.

Just get a V-twin motor off a Harley, it'll be the V8 for karts heheh, doen't rev much, but has torque and sounds like a beast tongue.gif

Forced induction system works in the priciple of presurising the combustion chamber. This works well in a 4 stroke engine simply because they have seperate intake strokes and exaust strokes. During the intake stroke only the inlet valve is opened and the exuast valve is close. Where presurising the combustion chamber is possible.

However if you look at 2 stroke engines, the intake and exaust strokes are the same stroke, meaning the exaust port and intake port are open at the same time. Exuast takes place when the inlet gas (with fuel and air) forces the burnt gases out. Meaning, there is no point in forcing fuel/air into the chamber. The forced fuel and air will just exit at the exaust port, thus the chamber is not presurised at all.

Just go for the high powered road bike motor. Anything around the 600 mark and over would be nice and wouldnt have the hassle of setting up the turbo. Still go real fast!

Not neccessarily.

The turbo just won't be as efficient. You also get a gain in that the system will push all the exhaust out of the cumbustion chamber which is a problem with 2-Strokes.

You can also run the turbo by greasing it instead of oil.

Deva (and others)- I'm pretty sure the gixxer cart is powered by a suzuki gsxr bike motor... Hence the name (GSXR's are nicknamed Gixxers).

I hope that's been covered somewhere in this thread allready.
