Hey guys,
I thought I'd ask the general car community on what you know or think a car name actually means? This came about because someone once asked - what does the "SX" stand for in 200SX. And you know what - I have no idea - and I'm losing sleep over it. (no joke)

So far I've been using my uber l33t google skillz and from reading various "200sx" history pages from different countries around the world, and reading other forums that I could get into - I've come to a conclusion. I've yet to 100% confirm this - but this is my theory.

The car is known in Japan as a Silvia - you have the S12, S13, S14 and S15. However - the same car in other countries is known as the 200SX or 240SX or 180SX depending on which country it is.

My theory - SX means Silvia eXport. In other words - the version of "Silvia" that was exported to another country - and therefore in that country it was named an "SX".

While researching that - I've also found the following:

GTR = Grand Touring Racing
GTO = Gran Turismo Omologato
WRX = World Rally Cross
RX (as in RX7) = Rotary Experience
CRX = Civic Renaissance model X (Renaissance means a rebirth of something; therefore Crx means it is a rebirth of the civic car.)

So what are some other car names you know and what they stand for? Can someone find what GSR (ie Lancer GSR) stands for?

The main idea I allways had was that the 180 was a 1.8L the 200 was a 2L and the 240(pretty rare except in NFSU) had a 2.4L motor in it

sort of makes scence I think........... unsure.gif

I read that Holden said that "Torana" did mean "to fly" in an aboriginal language. However, some tribes use the same word for "breasts".... dunno.gif

The 240SX has a KA24DE in it in the USA. Not sure if they had turbo over there.

I wonder where "GL" comes from because in just about every car make, "GL" is the base model (Pulsar GL, Lancer GL). What about CS? (toyota base model)

Then there Korean model names, for example CDX in the Daewoos.

I guess they just needed something that sounds sort of "good" after the name to differentiate the models. (ex. Pulsar N13 - GL, GX, GXE, SSS)

I also noticed a lot of companies are ditching the letters and just putting extra names on. Corolla - Conquest, Ascent, Levin, Sportivo, Seca (but this is the 'hatch' model). Also Mazda with Neo, Maxx, Maxx Sport, etc. I wonder what "SP" stands for is "SP20/23" etc etc etc.

Oh and with Commodores. They've got the Executive, Berlina, Acclaim, Equipe etc.

Why would an executive want a commodore?

Nope, read it in a High Performance Imports magazine

" Built 1985-1987, the original Civic Racing Xperiment (CRX) never made it to Australia as a volume model, though it was popular in America. Based on the AT Civic shape.....'
