QUOTE Active grenades, rocket launcher seized from NSW military museum
The Australian Defence Force have raided an old military museum in Wollongong, south of Sydney, this afternoon after explosives that had been on exhibit for decades were found to be still active. A number of explosives – including grenades and a rocket launcher – were seized from the Breakwater Battery Military Museum in Port Kembla. Lake Illawarra licensing officers made the startling discovery at 8.30am and immediately called in the Bomb Squad and the ADF. It was quickly confirmed the items could explode and the area was cordoned off. It is believed the weapons had been sitting in the museum since 1994 and were from as early as World War One. After three hours, they were taken from the building by the ADF for further examination and to be detonated. While inside the museum, the ADF also uncovered a number of allegedly stolen military items. More to come. |
