Here’s the Army’s New Hybrid Vehicle: Half Tank, Half Jeep

The U.S. Army just dropped nearly a quarter of a billion dollars on the first lot of armored combat vehicles meant to replace the service’s battered Humvee fleet.
The “more than” $243 million order to Wisconsin-based Oshkosh Defense covers the initial batch of 657 Joint Light Tactical Vehicles along with 2,977 “installed kits and related support,” the company said Wednesday in a statement.

The JLTV effort is a relative success story in terms of a major acquisition program. Oshkosh won the competition to build the Humvee successor for the Army and Marine Corps last August, beating out defense industry giant Lockheed Martin and AM General for a contract that is expected to total $30 billion over its lifetime.

Work froze for about 100 days when Lockheed protested the contract selection to the Government Accountability Office; the company also filed a lawsuit in the U.S. Court of Federal Claims. The court filing prompted GAO to chuck the challenge and allow Oshkosh to get its production line up and running while the lawsuit played out in court. Lockheed dropped its lawsuit last month.

The once vaunted Humvee lost some of its luster as the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan dragged on and the services moved toward heavily armored mine resistant ambush protected (MRAP) vehicles to better protect soldiers from roadside bombs. Military officials believe the lighter JLTV will help them regain some flexibility, and speed, on the battlefield.

The Army wants to buy around 49,000 JLTV vehicles, with acquisition slated to wrap up in 2040. Now that the initial order has been placed, the service could receive its first deliveries as soon as this October. The Marine Corps hopes to purchase 5,500 trucks and finish production in fiscal 2022.
The two services plan to spend $735 million to purchase 2,020 JLTVs next year, according to budget documents unveiled earlier last month.
The first wave of JLTVs aren’t expected to hit the field until 2018.

Salim Mehajer's family business empire cracking under legal strains

Sydney’s most controversial politician’s business empire may be cracking under the strain of repeated legal actions and an unrelenting media storm.

Fairfax Media reports former Auburn deputy mayor and property developer Salim Mehajer’s company is struggling to meet court-ordered payments and has been forced to sell off land.

The revelation comes a month after the now suspended Auburn council reversed decisions favouring Mr Mehajer’s company, costing it an estimated $10 million.

Mr Mehajer shot to prominence last year when his lavish ‘wedding of the century’ celebrations caused widespread outrage in his local community and captured attention nationwide.

Fairfax Media reports a $25,000 court-ordered bill to a crane company has seen few payments three months after it was issued.

After twice missing its 28-day payment deadline, Sydney Property Group has paid out just $1000 from its almost empty bank accounts.

Aysha Mehajer was removed from nine director and secretary roles across the Mehajer family empire this.

It has also been revealed that the company has been forced to borrow under unfavourable terms against holdings on Lidcombe's John Street.

A property on Mary Street in Lidcombe has been listed for sale.

It was this property that led to Mr Mehajer’s suspension from council when he was found not to have declared his interest in the matter. That decision, however, was overturned by the Supreme Court.

The state government later stepped in, standing down the entire Auburn council.

Mr Mehajer has faced scores of legal issues ranging from business disputes, to accusations of driving offences and threats to kidnap a man's children.

An intimidation case, in which he was accused of threatening to kidnap the children of Bruce Herat after a dispute at a gym, was thrown out of court this week when a judge decided there was no reasonable prospect of conviction.

You never know whats going to happen at a no-prep race! Especially when its your FIRST no-prep and there is 50 thousand dollars on the line! The crew with the “Texas Grim Reaper” didn’t seem too worried as they made their way towards the Finals. Their weapon of choice? - A 522 cubic inch, Big Block Corvette, pushed by a VIOLENT corkscrew supercharger, which shook the stands of the Drag strip every time it started up, causing people hundreds of feet away to cover their ears during every burnout and pass! We assume this won’t be the last time we see this car.

2016 McLaren 675LT: What Happens When You Crank a Supercar Up to 11? - Ignition Ep. 148

Have you ever climbed out of a McLaren 650S and said, “Not good enough, I’d like more please?” Us neither, but apparently 500 people had exactly that thought, as every single 675LT has already been sold. Jonny Lieberman manages to get ahold of two of them – red and green – and sets out to answer the question: why? As in why would anyone need more than what the already world challenging 650S offers. Along the way he goes for a ride with SCCA Hall of Famer and fellow Motor Trend host Randy Pobst as the two of them try to figure out what to make of such extreme machines. Is the 675LT worth its extravagant price tag? Watch and find out!

Mazda MX-5 takes unprecedented double at World Car of the Year Awards

The fourth-generation Mazda MX-5 this week achieved an unprecedented double at the annual World Car of the Year Awards in New York, picking up the gongs for best design and the overall best car.

The fourth-generation of Mazda’s iconic MX-5 convertible, released last year and racking up record sales, took all before it. It beat out the newly released Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz GLC for best car, and the Jaguar XE and its own CX-3 sibling for best design. This has been chalked up to the new model’s big weight loss and return to the flavour of the classic 1989 NA that started it all. In many markets, Australia included, it also received a big price cut.

The World Car of the Year Awards have five categories. The best green car was adjudged the hydrogen fuel-cell Toyota Mirai, the best luxury car was the new-generation BMW 7 Series and the best performance car the Audi R8.

But Mazda was the obvious star of the show. The World Car of the Year Awards might be considered to be something akin to the Academy Awards for cars.

The awards are comprised of tallied votes from 73 car journalists in 23 countries, each of whom has tested the car in their own markets.“What a wonderful honour to have the Mazda MX-5 named World Car of the Year and World Car Design of the Year,” said Mazda Corporation managing executive officer, and its new US chief, Masahiro Moro.

"As our iconic MX-5 roadster approached one-million units of production (it’s 8000 units shy), this award is proof that it is as young, vibrant, fun and relevant as ever, and proof that every Mazda looks as incredible as it drives, and drives as incredibly as it looks."

“While I accept this award on behalf on the company, I do so representing every Mazda employee, retail partner and customer around the world who has ever felt the joy of driving a pure roadster.”Mazda design head Ikuo Maeda also chipped in, saying the company’s design language, which it calls Kodo, aims to bring cars to life — proverbially.“

Mazda is a proud Japanese brand and we are determined to continue enhancing our designs moving forwards,” he added. But perhaps the best commentary was the one we sourced from the Mazda stand at the New York motor show. It’s from the man who led actual MX-5 design project, Masashi Nakayama.

“Really excited, unbelievable because we doubled, so fantastic and amazing, too good to me,” he said.2016 World Car of the YearMazda MX-52016 World Luxury CarBMW 7 Series2016 World Performance CarAudi R8 coupe 2016 World Car Design of the YearMazda MX-52016 World Green Car Toyota Mirai.

This last year should have provided an attitude adjustment, maybe he'll learn from it and pull his head in. The court case regarding the alleged election fraud, i'm sure that he be slimey enough to wiggle out of it.

meh, so many cars look like each other nowadays. there's so many styling cues blatantly ripped off from other manufacturers that they're all blending in together and becoming one big homologous mess.

maybe it'd be better with 50k of options, leather, carbon fibre inserts etc. though i'm thinking that they'd have something better than a base model / options for a demo vehicle?

Thoroughly checked. Same-same, just missing the quilted leather door cards and CF center console. It's the bits that carry over that are the problem. The shifter, door handles, wheel, all the switchgear, it's all Elantra spec. Interestingly I was in an XKR the other week (I have also considered the rare as hen's teeth XKR-S GT) and boy, despite being an old platform (10 years or more-and now discontinued) with ancient tech, all the bits and bobs were just so much higher quality,
