French teenager detained over international spate of school bomb threats

French police are reportedly questioning a teenager in relation to a campaign of bomb threats made to schools in several countries, including Australia.

Vincent Lauton, an 18-year-old who was arrested at his home in a village near Dijon, has been described as 'a sophisticated computer operative,’ the Daily Mail reported.

He is reportedly being questioned by police in relation to mass hoax bomb calls that have been made to schools across France, the UK, the US, Amsterdam, Tokyo and Australia.

Many of the calls were automated phone messages warning of a ‘bomb’ on school grounds, leading to the buildings being evacuated and thousands of students' classes being affected.

No devices were found during any of the alerts.

The Daily Mail said it had carried out an investigation into Mr Lauton and found he was the administrator of the darkness.su domain, which it says hoaxers from the ‘Evacuators 2K16’ group were hiding behind.

‘Evacuators 2K16’ is an anonymous hoax group that claimed credit for a string of calls that shut down UK and French schools.

Through social media, the group calls on students who ‘want to get out of school for a day’ to contact them with ‘bomb threat requests’.

The Daily Mail claimed the group, using Lauton’s site, planned to start charging for its ‘services’ for as little as $5.

France is in a state of emergency that was declared in the wake of the series of jihadist shootings and bombings that killed 130 people in Paris on November 13.

AAP reported that the 18-year-old arrested by French police on Monday was tracked down through his Internet IP address.

He was transferred to Paris while investigators tried to establish the extent of his involvement in the hoax bomb threats.

Police and investigation sources said computer equipment that the suspect had used were taken away for examination.

A joint operation between NSW Fair Trading and NSW Police this morning uncovered evidence of illegal odometer tampering at four motor vehicle dealerships in Sydney.

Operation Paris has resulted in action against four motor dealers and three motor vehicle repairers associated with the four dealerships, following a two-year investigation by Fair Trading’s Compliance and Enforcement Division.

All actions captured by this morning’s search warrants involved alleged winding back of odometers in used cars imported from Japan.

One dealership at Haberfield had its licence to operate suspended on the spot following execution of the search warrant.

Another dealership in Blacktown and two in Concord have been issued Notices to Show Cause as to why disciplinary action should not be taken.

Fair Trading Commissioner Rod Stowe said charges were expected to be laid for a number of offences including odometer tampering (Motor Dealers and Repairers Act 2013) false advertising (Australian Consumer Law) and fraud (Crimes Act 1901).

“Our investigators have identified approximately 100 vehicles that have had their odometers tampered with and sold to consumers,” Mr Stowe said.

“Of particular concern is the fact all affected vehicles identified through Operation Paris were second hand stock imported directly from Japan with no local records that allow verification of odometer readings.”

Evidence seized during the operation included deregistration certificates issued by Japan’s Bureau of Transportation, importation documents and papers relating to vehicle compliance with Australian road safety standards.

Mr Stowe said the problem of odometer tampering in imported cars appeared to be limited to Japan, where automatic deregistration applies to all vehicles after a stipulated time frame from the year of manufacture.

Mr Stowe commended Fair Trading investigators, NSW Police State Crime Command’s Property Crime Squad, Roads and Maritime Services and Safe Work for their successful execution of Operation Paris.

NSW Police Property Crime Squad Commander, Detective Superintendent Murray Chapman, said the offences uncovered were serious with each proven count of odometer tampering under the Motor Dealers and Repairers Act attracting a fine of up to $22,000. Fraud convictions attract a maximum penalty of 10 years’ imprisonment.

Australia's marsupial lions 'dropped from trees' to attack prey, study finds

When humans first set foot in Australia about 50,000 years ago, they could have faced ferocious marsupial lions that ambushed prey from trees and grew to the size of African lions. A new study reveals the now-extinct megafauna were adept climbers, could tear meat cleanly off bones, and reared their young in caves.

The precise behaviour of Thylacoleo carnifex, or marsupial lion, has been a matter of much controversy. Over time, theories have suggested it was everything from a consumer of crocodile eggs to a hyena-like scavenger and a leopard-like predator that dragged its prey into trees.

Now a cave on the south-western tip of Australia known as Tight Entrance cave, which is brimming with bones of the marsupial lions and their prey and has scratch marks covering the walls, has helped paint a detailed picture of its ferocious capabilities.

Gavin Prideaux and Samuel Arman, from Flinders University in Adelaide, examined hundreds of scratch marks on the cave’s walls and identified a large set of marks that were clearly from the marsupial lion, which became extinct about 40,000 years ago.

“The fact that they might have been bowling down crevices to get into caves is a nice idea,” said Mike Archer, a paleontologist from the University of New South Wales.

They found many of the claw marks were gouged into steep surfaces, even though there were paths through the cave with more gradual inclines. “This suggests regular, confident and purposeful climbing with a high degree of agility,” the researchers wrote in the journal Scientific Reports.

Government plans to allow parallel ‘grey’ imports from 2018

Despite a recommendation to approve parallel imports being knocked back by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull only several months ago, the government now plans to allow the parallel/grey import of vehicles into Australia from 2018.

Highlights of the changes include:

Individuals can now import one new car every two years
Each parallel import must be 12 months old or less, and must have travelled less than 500km
Imports will only be allowed initially from the United Kingdom and Japan due to high safety standards and right-hand drive
Changes will be made to the import of classic and convertible cars over 25 years old, scrapping a historic $12,000 duty on imports.
According to The Guardian, the changes to Australia’s vehicle import policy were announced today by major projects minister Paul Fletcher, with the expectation that around 30,000 Australians will access the scheme per year.

“It is true car dealers are not enthusiastic about this change, but we expect the quantity of imports to be modest,” he said.

“Most Australians will continue to purchase cars directly imported by manufacturers and sold through their existing dealership network.”

Not to be outdone by the British, in the weeks that followed, an American archaeologist dug to a depth of 20 feet, and shortly after, a story published in the New York Times said: "American archaeologists, finding traces of 250-year-old copper wire, have concluded that their ancestors already had an advanced high-tech communications network 50 years earlier than the British".
One week later, Australia 's Northern Territory Times reported the following: "After digging as deep as 30 feet in his backyard in Tennant Creek , Northern Territory , Knackers Johnson, a self-taught archaeologist, reported that he found absolutely bugger-all. Knackers has therefore concluded that 250 years ago, Australia had already gone wireless."
