ROBIN HOOD: ORIGINS Finds Its Maid Marian

Bafflingly, Lionsgate is still planning to move forward with Robin Hood: Origins, a new movie with Kingsman star Taron Egerton as the bow-and-arrow wielding outlaw. I guess they think it'll be better than Ridley Scott's Robin Hood, which was also an origin story for the character. In any case, Deadline reports that The Knick actress Eve Hewson is in negotiations to star opposite Egerton as Maid Marian. (Fun fact: Hewson is the daughter of U2 singer Bono.)

Apparently she beat out over 100 actresses for the role, including future Star Wars star (if rumors are to be believed) Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Vampire Academy star Lucy Fry. Peaky Blinders director Otto Bathurst is directing, and the "gritty" revisionist story will reportedly follow Robin Hood as he "returns from fighting in The Crusades and finds that Sherwood Forest is rife with corruption and evil. He forms a band of outlaws and they take matters into their own hands." Well, that sounds a lot like pretty much every other Robin Hood movie out there, so they're going to have to do a hell of a lot to get me interested in this.

Get ready to be absolutely inundated with Robin Hood movies, by the way, since Sony wants their own cinematic universe, and both Disney and Warner Bros. are developing their own takes on the character. Gimme a freakin' break.

Drag racing champ Brett Stevens jailed on drug charges

Australian drag racing legend Brett Stevens is used to taking chances, but it was a risk he took off the track that led to his downfall.

After an incredible racing career in which he won three national titles he went on to become a successful businessman and build up a bank of properties worth up to $14 million.

But in 2007 he began to run into financial woes and was being pursued by debt collectors.

Around the time his legitimate businesses began to fail, he met a person at the Queensland's Willowbank Raceway who would become a key associate in a drug operation.

Prosecutors say that for almost two years he masterminded a pill pressing operation which involved the potential production of hundreds of thousands of ecstasy pills which earned him up to $1.2 million.

The veteran racer deliberately distanced himself from the operation but was arrested in February 2009 after detectives collected 800 recorded interactions during a multi-agency operation which spanned almost two years.

His arrest was part of a police operation called Farus which tracked several syndicates linked to Queensland's drug scene.

Overall 120 people were arrested in relation to the long-running investigation.

Stevens' reputation was lost, his sponsorship withdrawn, debts were called in and many of his properties were sold off.

Over time he also had assets, including drag cars, motorcycles, trucks and boats, worth $3.4 million seized by the Crime and Corruption Commission.

Stevens denied the claims but was found guilty of trafficking and producing in September, although he was found not guilty of supplying.

On Friday afternoon the 50-year-old stood, not for the cheering fans at a race track, but for Supreme Court Judge Peter Lyons who sentenced him to 13 years' jail.

"You appear to have had a remarkable career," Justice Lyons said to the father-of-two as Stevens' wife was being comforted by a friend in the public gallery.

"You were not a drug addict, it is conduct that you engaged in for commercial motives."

Justice Lyons highlighted that from the evidence presented by prosecutors it was difficult to determine how many ecstasy pills were produced and exactly how much money he made out of it.

But he described it as a "large scale operation" and that several pill pressers were found at several locations and that 60kg of lactose used as a mixer to make the pills was found by police and that this could be used to make up to 300,000 pills.

There was no evidence that Stevens had himself made any of the pills, but it was argued he sat near the top of the drug operation hierarchy and that he distanced himself from the operation - often using code instead of his name over the phone because he was well-known - so he wouldn't be implicated.

The lawyer said his client was under financial strain in 2008 and had been trying to keep "the wolves from the doors".

Stevens will be eligible for parole in 10 years.

VW has only a few costly options to fix polluting diesels

DETROIT (AP) -- When Volkswagen submits a plan to fix emissions-cheating diesel engines on Friday, it will have only two options for most of the cars.

It can install a bigger exhaust system to trap harmful nitrogen oxide, or it can retrofit a chemical treatment process that cuts pollution.

The bigger exhaust will likely hurt performance and gas mileage, angering car owners. But the chemical treatment, while saving acceleration and mileage, needs a clumsy storage tank and multiple hardware changes to work. In either case, almost a half-million cars would have to be recalled for the repairs.

Experts say both options will be expensive, perhaps so costly that it will be cheaper to buy back some of the older models.

"I think they know right now how to do the fix," said Alan Baum, a consultant in Detroit who advises automakers on fuel-economy regulations. "The harder part of this is ... how do you actually execute it?"

VW has until Friday to submit a draft plan to fix four-cylinder diesels to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the California Air Resources Board, the two agencies that forced the German automaker to admit to the cheating. The company was to meet with the agencies on Thursday, with a final submission on Friday. VW's board also is to meet Friday and may discuss the repairs.

The plan, which is likely to have several options for regulators to consider, must be tested by the agencies to make sure the fixes comply with pollution laws. Testing and installation could take more than a year.

In September, Volkswagen admitted that about 482,000 U.S. cars with 2-Liter diesel engines from the 2009 through 2015 model years have software that turns pollution controls on during government treadmill tests and shuts them off when on real roads. As a result, the cars emit 10 to 40 times the allowable limit of nitrogen oxide, a chemical ingredient of smog that can cause breathing problems.

The U.S. admission triggered a much larger one for the rest of the world: VW has said another 10.5 million cars worldwide have the same deceptive software and will need to be repaired.

In addition, the EPA has accused VW of cheating a second time, programming about 10,000 VW and Audi vehicles with larger six-cylinder diesel engines to emit fewer pollutants during tests than in real-world driving. The company also has withdrawn its application to get emissions controls approved on four-cylinder diesels for the 2016 model year, and the government is investigating whether VW cheated on those.

Any recall would affect Jetta, Golf, Beetle, Passat and Audi A3 four-cylinder diesels. About 157,000 of those cars from 2015 plus 2012-2014 Passats likely can be fixed with relatively simple software changes. But 325,000 of the cars from 2009 to 2014 will need the complex and expensive hardware fixes as well as software. VW U.S. CEO Michael Horn has said it could take a year or longer for those cars to be fixed.

The most likely fix for the bulk of the cars is a treatment system with urea, a chemical that's injected into the exhaust system and helps separate nitrogen oxide into harmless nitrogen and oxygen.

The company also could use a bigger nitrogen oxide trap, but engine settings would have to be changed to flush it out periodically, and that would cut into performance and gas mileage.

John German, senior fellow with the International Council on Clean Transportation, the group that sponsored the on-road testing that exposed the cheating, said the older VWs were not designed to handle urea treatment systems, making a solution a complex challenge for engineers.

Space must be found for the urea storage tank, possibly taking precious trunk room. Urea can freeze, so the storage tank must be kept warm. The urea tank has to be refilled periodically, so a refilling method has to be designed and installed. Lines have to be run to take urea from the tanks to the exhaust system and an injection system added, said German, who estimates that hardware, design, and installation costs would likely exceed $1,000 per car.

"They probably didn't plan on nitrogen oxide after-treatment when they designed the floor pan," German said.

Volkswagen wouldn't comment Thursday on a possible fix. A spokeswoman said the company is cooperating with the agencies. The EPA and the California Air Resources Board would not comment.

Fire couple trash Gold Coast mansion rented by Clive Palmer

QUOTE
A COUPLE who lost their toddler son in a house fire has trashed the luxury Gold Coast home Clive Palmer rented for them in the wake of the tragedy.

It could potentially leave the billionaire mining magnate with a repair bill as high as $100,000.
Jaryd Campbell and Belinda Warwick prompted a nationwide outpouring of sympathy when they lost their two-year-old son Roman and all their possessions in a house fire in Beenleigh, south of Brisbane, in May.
Among the many people touched by the couple's plight was Mr Palmer, who subsequently paid $1000 a week to rent the couple a luxury Gold Coast home to house them and their remaining four children for six months.
The couple's lease ended this week and when the real estate agent arrived to do their final inspection prior to the owner's return from Singapore, they found the condition of the home so poor, the damage bill could potentially run as high as $100,000.

difficult to be upset with them tbh, with what they've gone through and the impact that it's had on them and the emotional toll / journey.

they were full of excuses, in explaining how the houses condition deteriorated, but you'd have to give them credit, that they did front the camera's and weren't angry / abusive to camera. you could still see that they were hurting.

and the damage estimate, 100k, that's a joke. wouldn't be anywhere near that amount, ie drop a zero.

there were 3-4 doors off their hinges, or damaged in some way, front door / rear sliding doors frame came apart / internal door. one doors handle had gone through the plaster where there was no stop, a couple of holes in the wall (fist sized etc). kitchen drawers were damaged / 3 or 4 of them, fronts had come off or had split / not sliding. and some of the carpet was coming up and probably in need of a clean, given they had pets / kids etc

general shit left all over the place, kids toys / clothes, oven not cleaned / stove tops etc. no final clean done. and one of Clive's cars that he'd given them was still there, guarded by 3 cats that they hadn't picked up and moved to their new home yet.

it wasn't pretty by any means (and no one would be impressed), but i've seen a lot lot worse.

Paris attacks: Why I'm with Waleed Aly, not Andrew Bolt

The Age
Martin Flanagan

On Monday, The Age published a Comment article by Mackinnon, who is also an academic. I risk distorting his meaning by summarising the article, but it was an exasperated cry for a realistic discussion about terrorism of the sort we saw in Paris.

He listed 10 points which, he said, needed to be acknowledged before we can usefully proceed. He hit both Left and Right and I thought his list was a fair one. Bruce is from Collingwood and the article read like an old Victoria Park half-time address. At one point, he called on moderate Muslims to stand up. He's right. If the centre of this society is to hold, moderate Muslims have to stand up and, when they do, we have to stand with them.

That night, one did. I refer to Waleed Aly's editorial on The Project. I feel the need here to state the obvious. Aly was talking to Muslim Australians as well as non-Muslim Australians. There is no doubt what he said has been seen by Islamic State supporters both in this country and overseas. Waleed Aly would now be seen as their enemy, if he wasn't before.

IS is a fascist organisation. Like all fascist organisations, its philosophy is adolescent – which is not to deny its murderous power. It projects a black-and-white vision and has no tolerance for those who stand in the grey area in between. (It was Adolf Hitler who said, "I have no tolerance for tolerance".) The fact is that the great mass of humanity stands in the grey area. Aly appealed for the grey people to stay calm.

That morning, in the Herald Sun, Andrew Bolt had written a column which ran beneath the term "Muslim time bomb". The article can be read to mean Bolt wants no Muslims in Australia. The day after Aly's editorial, Bolt attacked him. It is no less necessary to Bolt's logic than it is to IS's to destroy Aly's position.

Aly was also attacked by Chris Kenny in The Australian. The headline writer summarised the article as "love will not conquer ISIL". Aly never said it would. He said we're under attack, don't turn on one another, the enemy is nowhere near as strong as it wants us to believe.

Kenny accused Aly of not addressing the issue of "the ideology of Islamist extremism". How could anyone with a television in their home not know "the ideology of Islamist extremism"? Kenny declared, "We know they can be defeated in a ground war". How, exactly, do we "know"? This sounds like the sort of aggressive bluster that preceded the disastrous invasion of Iraq in 2003, which even Tony Blair now admits contributed to IS's growth.

Journalism is an impure art, but I maintain that some journalists are a lot better than others. I always give special attention to the journalist who is on the spot. On Monday, The Guardian had an article by a French journalist, Nicolas Henin, who was a prisoner of IS and shared a cell with a number of the men who were later decapitated by Jihadi John.

Henin wrote, "They [IS] present themselves to the public as superheroes, but away from the camera are a bit pathetic in many ways: street kids drunk on ideology and power ... there is much we can achieve in the aftermath of the [Paris] atrocity, and the key is strong hearts and resilience, for that is what they fear. I know them: bombing they expect. What they fear is unity."

Martin Flanagan is a senior writer at The Age.

Photos of Wonder Woman from George Miller's Canceled JUSTICE LEAGUE Movie

As many of you already know, back in 2008, Mad Max director George Miller was set to direct a Justice League movie for Warner Bros. The project ended up being canceled for numerous reasons. It's one of those films that I wish would have happened. I think it really could have been great.

The movie was called Justice League: Mortal, and the plug was pulled on it right before it was supposed to start shooting. The film had an interesting cast that included Armie Hammer as Batman, D.J. Cotrona as Superman, Megan Gale as Wonder Woman, Adam Brody as Flash, Common as Green Lantern, Santiago Cabrera as Aquaman, Hugh Keays-Byrne as Martian Manhunter, and Jay Baruchel as Maxwell Lord.

Today the internet was treated with some photos from the development process of the film. They show us what Miller's version of Wonder Woman was going to look like. These photos feature Megan Gale in costume, and I love the recognizable look of it as well as the vintage feel. The photos debuted on photographer Marc Rogers' website.

It would be great if some of the other costume test photos ended up being released. I'd love to see what the other characters would have looked like.
