Holden will stop making the V8 in 2017, citing ‘changing’ technology

It’s over ... the Holden V8 will no longer be manufactured by Holden after 2017. Supplied

AUSSIE V8 fans will have to get used to four-cylinder and V6 power for their future performance sedans, the Asia-Pacific boss of General Motors Stefan Jacoby has confirmed what has long been feared.

The Holden V8 will die once manufacturing comes to an end at Holden’s factory in Elizabeth in South Australia at the end of 2017.

In an interview with Australian media at the Frankfurt motor show overnight, Mr Jacoby said: “The world obviously is changing and the V8 period is coming to an end.”

The V8 is the single biggest-selling version of the current Holden Commodore and one of the few models not to go down in sales.

But Mr Jacoby said buyers would have to get used to the new world order.

“It is just more or less a perception from the customer they need a big engine and big horsepower to have the performance,” said Mr Jacoby.
“I know they are charming and I like the sound of the V8 but times are changing. The technology is changing with more or less the same performance. The acceptance is changing, even in America.”

There is also no chance that Holden might import a budget-priced V8 sedan from the USA.

Holden currently exports the Commodore V8 to North America where it is sold as a Chevrolet.

But there are no plans for Chevrolet to develop a successor in 2018.

“That (US car) phases out when we see manufacturing end in Australia,” said Mr Jacoby.

The GM executive insisted that the next generation Holden Commodore, likely to be imported from Germany, will still have “the same fun to drive same sportiness” as the current car, even though it won’t have a V8.

Holden is also said to be planning on introducing the next generation Corvette, but it will likely cost in excess of $100,000.

That means Holden’s arch rival Ford will be the only brand with an affordable V8 in its showrooms within two years.

The Ford Mustang, available with four-cylinder or V8 power, arrives in Australia in December priced from $45,000 to $65,000.

We already have this in NSW,and it looks like you are about to get it as well. It's a PIA,in the fact that if you don't want Ethanol, you have to use premium fuels (more GST for the Government),Ethanol especially kills older, and some new engines.A Highway Cop caused $60,000 damage to a Highway Patrol Vehicle, when he inadvertently put standard unleaded (10% Ethanol) in it,we also had a shonky fuel distributor that was watering down his premium fuels, with unleaded. He killed shitloads of cars before public outcry caused a spot inspection by his main distributor, and he was sprung.I now use premium fuel in everything,(my mower, even the Mrs's car, which has an E10 friendly sticker on it). So beware folks,it's now coming to a Servo near you.

Qld govt introduces ethanol mandate laws

QUOTE
A mandate on ethanol in fuel will help Queensland transition to a clean energy economy, the state government says.
New laws requiring petrol retailers to offer a fuel made up of at least two per cent ethanol and a diesel fuel containing at least 0.5 per cent bio-sources have been introduced to state parliament.
Energy and Water Supply Minister Mark Bailey says the laws target fuel companies and regular fuels will still be available to motorists who don't want to use biofuels.
He hopes the mandate will stimulate the state's budding biofuels industry.

"It will support the development of a sustainable biofuels industry that can help Queensland transition to a clean energy economy, contribute to regional growth and job creation and promote the development of an advanced bio-manufacturing industry," Mr Bailey told parliament.
He explained that under the mandate retailers would also need to sell one litre of E10 petrol for every four litres of regular unleaded petrol sold.
The mandate, which would be introduced from July 1 next year, would not cover wholesalers.
Mr Bailey said there are also provisions to increase the mandate in coming years to drive investment in the biofuels sector.
"This pathway for future increases to the mandate will also give time for market and industry to get ready," he added.
The laws would be analysed by a parliamentary committee before they come back to the house to be voted on.

What I negated to say in the above post,is down here, they needed an extra bowser for the E10 based unleaded,so they used the standard unleaded bowser, for this purpose, thus making standard unleaded unavailable, and I can't see it being any different for you guys.

Are you happy with the job they did Wolfie? We had a major hailstorm about five years ago,and the insurance companies wrote most of the vehicles off, unless they were high end,or very late models. There are still a lot of hail damaged cars around here, and the better the paintwork, the more they stand out.

A lot of the hail damaged cars from the last storm got bought up at auction by various Indian/Pakistani or middle eastern folks, stripped and sent overseas.

All I can say is NEVER use Gemini Smash Repairs. Suncorp decided it was a repair job, sent it to them, they did such a bad job that the cost of rectifying it would have made the car a write-off. ie; the repairer WROTE MY CAR OFF. I wound up yelling at the head of Suncorp Insurance QLD, and having them agree to NOT write it off, having the repair repair work done at a proper place, and billing Gemini for it.

Fun times.

I think you really have to know what you're doing with hail damage repair, and there are not many companies around that can do it successfully, the ones that can, normally do 'paint less dent removal'

They're all over the place their workshops are massive. And yes their work is supposed to be shit. The insurance companies decided to try and send all their work to one outfit to save money. A lot of smaller panel shops have gone under because this.

Remember, you usually have the choice of repairer so if you know a decent panel shop get the towie to take your car there instead and they'll give a cheque to the towie.
