When Dean Jones began his motion picture career in 1956, he was just biding his time until he got his real break. The former crooner-turned-actor once recalled, “I wish I could say I had this master plan for a career, but I always thought acting was something I’d just do until I had a hit record.

While Dean’s hit record proved elusive, he scored a number of hit movies while under contract with The Walt Disney Studios. By 1975, Variety named six of his Disney features on its list of all-time box office champions, including The Love Bug, That Darn Cat, Snowball Express, The Ugly Dachshund, The $1,000,000 Duck, and Blackbeard’s Ghost.

Dean’s clean-cut appeal and good-natured hijinks made his name synonymous with Disney motion pictures. As former president of Walt Disney Pictures David Vogel once said, “When you think of Disney, you think of Dean Jones.”
Born on January 25, 1931, in Decatur, Alabama, Dean liked to fish in the nearby Tennessee River and sing; his father, a railroad worker, would accompany him on the guitar. At 15 he left home to pursue a singing career, picking up odd jobs as a coal loader, cotton picker, and dishwasher. He began singing in a New Orleans club that paid three dollars a night, plus dinner. After four months the club folded, and Dean beat a path back to Decatur to complete his high school education.

A year of voice study at Kentucky’s Asbury College was followed by a four-year hitch with the United States Navy, which took Dean to San Diego, California. Whenever he had a day off, Dean headed to Hollywood to audition for orchestras; he eventually won a screen test and contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Instead of singing for the cameras, however, he starred in mostly straight, dramatic roles. Among his early films were Vincente Minnelli’s Tea and Sympathy, Torpedo Run with Glenn Ford, and Jailhouse Rock with Elvis Presley.

In 1960, Dean found fame in Broadway’s Under the Yum Yum Tree. While starring in television’s Ensign O’Toole, he was tapped by Walt Disney to become the Studio’s leading man, appearing in such films as The Horse in the Gray Flannel Suit, The Shaggy D.A., and Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo. He returned to the Broadway stage in 1970, appearing in Steven Sondheim’s Company.

Dean later appeared in a number of Disney television specials, including Disney’s Greatest Dog Stars in 1976. He starred in the first of a number of Disney remakes—The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes in 1995; and, in 1997, That Darn Cat and the ABC television movie The Love Bug.

Dean passed away on Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at the age of 84.

A mother and daughter who were injured when Salim Mehajer lost control of his $300,000 Ferrari are suing the Auburn deputy mayor for damages.
Nhu Hua, then 68, and Tuyet La, 40, were rushed to hospital in January 2012 when the then 26-year-old lost control of his Ferrari 612 Scaglietti, striking the pair on the footpath on The Boulevard at Lidcombe.
The pair suffered serious leg and pelvis injuries that required surgery at Westmead Hospital.
Ms Hua and Ms La launched civil proceedings against Mr Mehajer in the NSW District Court last year, and the hearing is set for November 9. The case is being handled by his insurer at the time, NRMA
In October 2012, a month after he was elected deputy mayor of Auburn, Mr Mehajer was convicted of negligent driving in the Local Court and sentenced to 150 hours' community service and banned from driving for a year. But the conviction was overturned on appeal to the District Court.
Mr Mehajer's lavish wedding party in August - with four helicopters, a fleet of stretch limousines and a squad of motorbikes - sparked renewed interest in his business dealings. He was fined $220 for illegally blocking Frances Street, Lidcombe, during filming of the festivities.
He is now facing legal action by the NSW Office of Local Government over allegations he voted on council rezoning plans without making a full disclosure of his property interests.
Mr Mehajer has previously locked horns with the Department of Fair Trading, after it refused to renew his building contractor licence in June 2014 on the grounds he was "not a fit and proper person".
That decision was based on "perceived inaccuracies" in the answers Mr Mehajer provided on an application form by his company, SM Engineering & Construction (NSW) Pty Limited, to become a licensed builder, rather than on his character.
Fair Trading's decision was overturned by the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal, which found Mr Mehajer was "an individual of considerable standing in the community".

i read what must have been another news story on the women suing him about the accident, with him saying that it's for the NRMA (iirc) and the women to settle between themselves / that he has no comment to make.

TRIAL FOR 60-DAY REGO SCHEME GETS GO AHEAD IN NSW

THE NSW Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight - Duncan Gay - announced yesterday that a two year trial of a new registration scheme for modified cars will begin on October 1. It will allow those with vehicles on a club registration scheme to get out cruising more often because there are no restrictions as to where and when you can take the car out. Currently, cars on club rego are restricted to club events and maintenance, but this trial will mean you can take your car anywhere, any time.

"The current Historic Conditional Registration scheme remains unchanged as an option for enthusiasts but, this Government recognised that owners of conditionally registered vehicles had limited use," said Mr. Gay.

Under the two year log-book based trial, owners of over 30 year old vehicles that meet the safety requirements of full registration or the current Historical

Vehicle Scheme will be able to opt-in via participating clubs for 60 days of general use each registration year. The opt-in option is also another benefit, as you can also opt-out if you find that it doesn't suit your requirements. Joining this scheme does not exclude you from going back on to full registration.
It might not sound like a lot of days to drive your car, but if you think about it, that's five times every month. If you didn't drive your car over winter, that would mean you could take it out every Saturday and Sunday for six months of the year.

Former SM editor Geoff Seddon was on board early on in the piece and had this to say: "As far as I'm aware it's the first historic scheme in Australia to specifically cater for legally modified post-'48 and it's pretty much exactly what we asked for. Because the Australian Confederation of Motor Clubs was involved from the start, it includes all vehicles, including motorbikes."

The thing to remember is this is in addition to the current schemes already in place, so if you're happy with how everything is at the moment, then there's no need to change. This will just allow more people to enjoy their rides more often. "We've incorporated safe, sensible additions in consultation with the community and stakeholders so owners and the wider community can revel in these vehicles' unique beauty more often," said Mr. Gay.

This NSW Liberals & Nationals initiative will bring NSW into line with several other states while boosting opportunities in the automotive aftermarket industry which contributes $11 billion to the Australian economy and employs 30,000.

To be eligible, the vehicle has to be over 30 years old and you have to be a member of a participating club, and as this is such a new directive the list of clubs has not been finalised yet as it is up to the individual club to decide whether they offer the scheme to their members. Australian National Street Machine Association or get in touch with your local club through list of Australian Combined Motoring Clubs.

This is the result of four, solid years of work by the ACMC with the minister, and the RMS and special recognition must also go to Garry Warnes (ANSMA) and ACMC's patron Alan Hay.

still not on it yet, they started work in March. we were expecting them to have finished the roll-out a couple of months ago tbh. i'm walking past a part now on Francis Road (when i go to the gym) where it looks like they may be rolling out new lines / pit work, with the pavement marked up with spray paint like they're about to do some digging / install work. now into the seventh month since the initial notice.......
