Adelaide Crows coach Phil Walsh murdered, son detained by police, wife in hospital

THE son of Adelaide Crows coach Phil Walsh has been charged with his father’s murder after a domestic dispute in the early hours of this morning.

Walsh, 55, was found dead in his Somerton Park home by police at about 2am on Friday with multiple stab wounds. A knife was found at the scene.

His 26-year-old son Cy was arrested at a friend’s home in Glenelg East, and has since been charged. Walsh’s wife is in hospital with non-life threatening injuries, reportedly to her leg.

The Adelaide Football Club released a statement, saying it was “devastated” by the news. The club will hold a media conference later today.

It is not yet clear how the tragic events will affect the upcoming weekend of footy but it seems highly unlikely Crows players will take to the field, while there have been calls to postpone the entire round.

AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan said the entire industry was grieving at the loss.

“We send our love & support to the Walsh family, the Crows staff & players, Phil’s wider circle of friends,” he said.

“Phil Walsh was a man of boundless energy and enthusiasm, and his death is a tragic loss.”

Adelaide Police Superintendent Des Bray described the events this morning as “terrible” and “tragic”.

“Ambulance crews immediately rendered first aid and tried to resuscitate (Phil Walsh) but unfortunately he died shortly (after the attack),” Supt Bray said.

“His wife also suffered a wound. Police were able to establish that at around about 2 o’clock, the son of the family had attended (the house).

“There’d been an argument — I can’t tell you anything (about the) argument or the circumstances — but as a result of that, both Mr Walsh and his wife received the wounds.

“As I understand the son ordinarily lives there. Somebody from the house has called triple zero.”

In an interview with the Herald Sun’s Mark Robinson in April, Walsh said his focus on his career had impacted on his family life. He had been a player and coach for more than 33 years.

“I just immersed myself, got consumed and was selfish with as much time I committed to footy,” he said.

“I lost that connection and I’m trying to reconnect with my son, which I have done.”

AFL football circles are in deep shock in the wake of the news.

Nathan Brown, former Richmond player and Nine Network commentator, said the death was shocking and would impact many AFL clubs.

“I’m shocked,” Brown told the Nine Network.

“At the moment beside myself that a lot of players are going to wake up today and be on their way to training and find out this news.

“He played for Collingwood, he played for Brisbane. He’s been at West Coast, he’s been at half the AFL clubs. This is going to touch so many people.”

Walsh was also a highly respected player who played 122 top-level games for Collingwood, Richmond and Brisbane.

Walsh had led the Crows to a 7-5 record this season after making the switch from cross-town rival Port Adelaide, where he served as an assistant in 2014 after returning to South Australia.

Walsh, from country Victoria, played 122 games in the AFL for Collingwood, Richmond and Brisbane, mostly as a wingman.

His first coaching job was in strength and conditioning at Geelong, before he moved to Port Adelaide as an assistant in 1999 and was Mark Williams’ right hand man as the Power claimed its maiden AFL premiership in 2004.

In 2009 he moved to West Coast as an assistant under John Worsfold before moving back to Adelaide to rejoin the Power last year.

Veteran Adelaide AFL journalist Michelangelo Rucci told 5AA he was in disbelief after hearing the news.

“I’m speechless, bewildered ... A person that so many of us knew so well, I just can’t understand how this can happen,” Rucci said.

“People who knew Phil Walsh will be waking up today in just absolute disbelief, just staggered, that has happened. This is an extraordinary bit of news.”

When asked how the Crows will deal with the situation, Rucci said: “No one’s ever faced a situation like this. This is without precedent. There are going to be so many people who have to be counselled. So many people who will have to lead while dealing with this tragedy.

“It is bewildering to think just how this has happened.

“There are many things that will have to play out over the next 24 hours in football.”

Only 2% Of People Can Spot A Hidden Soldier In These Pictures

Simon Menner, a photographer, had a brilliant idea in mind. He set out to capture images of military men completely camouflaged in the dense scenery around them. He appropriately named his series “Camouflage.” To make his project a reality, he contacted the German army. After accepting his idea, they decided to take the photos in both Northern Germany and the German Alps. After looking at the beautiful scenery, anyone can agree that the locations were brilliantly picked.

He asked some elite soldiers to dress in their best camouflage and to hide out in each location. Using their incredible skill of blending into their surroundings, he captured something that is far more than a fun optical trick. The main concept for Menner’s work was to show war and conflict from his own point of view. The idea of not seeing something that was right in front of society’s eyes was the number one priority for this incredible project. Take a look at the pictures and try to find the hidden soldiers. If your sharp eyes can see through the camaflogue, you share something in common with only 2% of the project’s viewers.

NASA JPL's RoboSimian robot stood out at the DARPA Robotics Challenge as one of the few non-humanoid designs. The use of four versatile limbs allows it to adapt to the test scenario in ways that would be difficult for a bipedal robot. We chat with Katie Byl of the UC Santa Barbara Robotics Lab, whose team programmed RoboSimian, to learn about the advantages of a quadruped design and how RoboSimian may be utilized in complex environments like being underground or even in space!

With some extreme build components, the potential on this rig seems to be sky high. For now, the truck is launching at 80psi of boost and ramping it up to an incredible 130psi.

The truck has been 9s in the past, but this time it’s on an entirely new setup that the crew is looking to break in to ease it into its full potential.

Charging your phone will soon be a thing of the past

Imagine never again having that frantic feeling that your smartphone battery is about to die.

Amazingly, charging your phone may soon be a thing of the past: Technology companies are developing a way for your gadgets to power up while they're sitting in your pocket.

By converting radio waves into battery-replenishing power, smartphones equipped with special receivers can literally pull energy right out of the air.

It's not far-off in the future stuff -- the technology is making its way to the real world in a matter of months.

Companies like Energous (WATT), Nikola Labs and a small handful of others have different ways to accomplish that, but their technology essentially works like this: Special antennas focus cellular and Wi-Fi signals into a pocket of low-powered energy around the back of your phone. A receiver on your phone then converts that radio energy into DC power that can charge the battery.

Wireless charging technology has existed for years in the form of power mats, pads and even Ikea furniture. But you need to keep your phone on the pad in order to charge it, making it only slightly more convenient and aesthetically pleasing than plugging it into the wall.

Long-distance wireless charging was long thought to be too dangerous. Walk between your phone and the charger, and you were likely to get zapped.

But by harnessing the energy that is already being sent to and from your phone -- radio signals -- you can charge your phone at a distance without worrying about being fried in the process.

Energous plans on releasing wireless chargers and phone cases in late 2016 that will let you charge your phone at a distance of up to 20 feet. The company demonstrated the technology at this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, winning two "Best in Show" awards and three other honors.

At a distance of up to five feet, the company's transmitters charge phones at the same speed as a wall charger. Up to 10 feet, the speed is reduced to USB-charging levels. And up to 15 feet, your battery will charge at a "trickle."

But what makes Energous particularly compelling is that it claims to have signed a commitment with a "top tier" tech company that will build the wireless receivers right into the gadgets themselves (no case needed). Energous says that its nondisclosure agreement prevents it from naming the company, but

CEO Stephen Rizzone told CNNMoney that the commitment is for "millions of devices," and "it's highly likely that you own some of this company's products."

Hmmm....

Nikola Labs, which stole the show at TechCrunch Disrupt this year with its battery-extending smartphone case, uses somewhat different technology to apply a similar concept. Unlike Energous, which requires a special transmitter to send energy to your phone, Nikola Labs' smartphone cases harness and recycle the unused energy your phone creates by searching for cell towers and Wi-Fi routers.

With normal use, the Nikola Labs cases don't actually charge up your phone -- they help extend your battery life by about a third. But get close enough to a Wi-Fi router, and your phone will start charging similar to the way that Energous' transmitters operate.

Nikola Labs' cases will ship later this year, but early adopters can get their hands on it by backing a Kickstarter campaign.
In the early days of wireless charging technology, you'll still have to plug in on occasion: Your Energous transmitter will be limited to a single room in your home, and your Nikola Labs case usually won't charge up your battery.

But one day soon, transmitters could be deployed in Wi-Fi routers themselves and receivers could be universally built into devices.

Universal wireless charging wouldn't only impact phones. Imagine toys with "batteries not required" labels. And the impact universal wireless charging could have on the wearables market could be game-changing.

The Apple Watch and other wearable devices typically only get 10 or so hours of battery life -- a puny amount for something that you're supposed to wear all day long. If they could charge while you're wearing them, you'd be able to treat your fitness band or smartwatch just like a regular wristwatch.

The best part: It's not pie-in-the-sky dreaming. It's coming soon.
