Bankrupt Colt Gun Company Had Famous and Infamous Users

The Colt gun company, which recently filed for bankruptcy Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, has amassed a long history and a trove of famous and infamous gunslingers across the way.

The firearms of Samuel Colt, who opened his first plant in 1836 in Paterson, NJ, appeared in key moments in American history, including both sides of the Civil War. Years later, the Colt Single Action Army Revolver, introduced in 1873, was known as "the gun that won the West."

Among the American West's icons who carried a Colt was Army scout and buffalo hunter William "Buffalo Bill" Cody.

His Colt model 1873 Frontier Six Shooter Revolver sold for $40,625, including the buyer's premium, on June 14, 2014 through Heritage Auctions. It's one of only five known Colt Single Action Army Revolvers and the only Colt Frontier Six Shooter documented to have belonged to him.

Cody may have purchased the revolver at the famous firearm seller Hartley & Graham in January 1883 while on extended stay in New York City with his famous theater troupe, according to the auction house.

The nickel-plated six-shot double-action revolver came with an original personal letter from Madeleine Capone Morichetti, the widow of Capone's brother, Ralph Capone, confirming that the gun "previously belonged to and was only used by Al Capone while he was alive."

Other famous "proponents" of the gun company include Wyatt Earp's friend and lawman William Barclay “Bat” Masterson, World War II General George Patton and President Theodore Roosevelt, Colt's website states.

Now Colt Defense, headquartered in West Hartford, Connecticut, has found itself with more debt than it can handle. However, according to its bankruptcy filing dated Sunday, the company has $20 million in financing to continue operations during the bankruptcy proceedings.

"Importantly, Colt remains open for business and our team will continue to be sharply focused on delivering for our customers and being a good commercial partner to our vendors and suppliers," Colt's chief restructuring officer Keith Maib, said in a statement. "We look forward to successfully executing on this plan, which provides a sound path of stewardship for an iconic American brand and the key stakeholders we serve.”

Sales of its handguns and rifles have slid. The company lost a decade-long government contract in 2012 that supplied the Army with the M4 carbine rifle, edged out by competitors like FN Herstal and Remington.

It was a game series on Dreamcast that was basically Virtua Fighter crossed with an adventure game made by the guy who made VIrtua Fighter, Outrun, SPace Harrier etc. Shenmue is probably the most famous unfinished game series in history. At the time, they were the most expensive games ever made...absolutely brilliant. Shenmue 3 has been probably the most frequently talked about "vapourware" sequel ever, with Half Life 3 a close second.

It's a big deal.

Five things you didn't know about M&Ms

M&Ms are one of America’s most popular candies. Seriously, is there anybody who hasn’t had a handful of M&M’s at one point or another? But even if you never leave home without a fun-size bag in your pocket, we bet there are some things you didn’t know about this “colorful button-shaped chocolate.”

“M&M” Stands for Mars & Murrie

The Hershey Company had full control of rationed chocolate during World War II, so when Forrest Mars, the son of Mars Candy Company founder Frank Mars, set out to create a chocolate pellet covered in a candy shell, he needed to partner with someone from Hershey. None other than Bruce Murrie, the son of Hershey’s president William Murrie, agreed to go into business with Mars, providing Hershey’s chocolate in return for a 20 percent stake in the company, called M&M Limited (after Mars & Murrie). Mars bought out Murrie’s interest in 1948 and became one of Hershey’s main competitors, but the candy’s name stuck.

Each M&M Contains About 4.7 Calories

Each one weighs about .91 grams, or .032 ounces.

Peanut M&M’s Were All Originally Tan

They were introduced in 1954, and didn’t become multicoloured until several years later.

Dulce de Leche M&Ms Were Once Available

They were introduced in a handful of markets with large Hispanic populations in 2001, but were phased out by early 2003.

Billy West and J.K. Simmons Voice the Red and Yellow ‘Spokescandies’

The duo has appeared in numerous commercials, most notably the one where Santa discovers that “they do exist!” West is best known for also voicing Doug in Doug, Stimpy in Ren & Stimpy, and Fry in Futurama; Veteran character actor Simmons is familiar from his portrayal of Vernon Schillinger on HBO’s Oz and won the 2015 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Whiplash.

Aussie man records 'world's best marriage proposal', makes everyone else look bad

On behalf of every Australian man to ever lob a ring at his girlfriend with little more than a “what’d’ya reckon”, can we just say thanks Liam Cooper – you’ve made us all look absolutely terrible.

Liam is responsible for one of the most painstakingly planned and crafted, and brilliantly executed marriage proposals we have ever seen.

With the help of his friends and his soon-to-be father-in-law, Liam performed and filmed a music video covering the hit song Rude by Magic, and then organised a special screening Greater Union Cinemas in Shellharbour, New South Wales.

“When I decided I wanted to propose to my girlfriend Amy, I wanted it to be something pretty special and something she'd never see coming,” Liam wrote on his YouTube account alongside a video documenting the big day.

“I decided to make a music video to the song 'Rude' by Magic and screen it in a cinema after the trailers while we were on a seemingly normal date with her sister and brother-in-law.”

As far as Amy knew, she was on a regular date. Liam excused himself to go to the bathroom and promptly appeared on the screen.

Amy seemed to know what was coming when a suddenly immaculately dressed, but visibly nervous, Liam reappeared, took a knee and popped the question.

He then revealed that he’d secretly snuck a huge group of their friends into the cinema to witness the proposal.

If the grand production wasn’t enough, Liam somehow even managed to get a special message from the band that originally recorded the song for his fiancé.

“Amy, we heard that Liam has been working really, really had on this proposal so we hope you said yes,” the band said before strumming a few more licks of their hit tune.

So, did it work? We can’t give away any spoilers. The video is too good. You will have to watch for yourself.

Tommy Chong Diagnosed With Rectal Cancer

"Cheech & Chong" star Tommy Chong has revealed he is battling rectal cancer.

"I've had some medical issues lately," Chong, 77, told Us Weekly on Tuesday. "I got diagnosed with rectal cancer."

"I'm in treatment now," he added. "Either I get healed or I don't. But either way, I’m going to make sure I get a little edge off or put up."

Chong also tweeted the news, writing, "I have good news and bad news. First the bad news, the cancer came back and it's a real pain in the butt. The good news is I now have to use more marijuana to treat the cancer."

He added, "I will be documenting my cancer fight on the Chong and Chong podcast to let my fans know how the fight is going. Please wish me luck while I kick cancer's behind. Thank you for all of your love and support."

He didn't specify what type of treatment he was undergoing.

Chong, who competed on "Dancing With the Stars" in 2014, added that he's using cannabis in a medicinal way.

Chong has dealt with cancer before. In 2012, when he battled stage-one prostate cancer.

He told CNN at the time that he no longer smoked marijuana for health reasons, but consumed hemp oil at night.

Cannabis has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to relieve symptoms of nausea and vomiting, and to help increase appetite in people with cancer and AIDS, according to the American Cancer Society. The most potent ingredient of medical marijuana is THC. The product comes in the form of an inhaler, pills and oil and it can also be smoked.

Dallas Buyers Club's threatening letter to downloaders revealed

Thousands of Australians will be given a 28-day deadline to either dob in an internet pirate, even if they are children, or admit to illegally downloading copies of Hollywood movie Dallas Buyers Club.

Fairfax Media has obtained copies of the letter that Voltage Pictures, the copyright owner of Dallas Buyers Club, wants to send to 4726 internet users alleged to have downloaded the movie.

The company's attempt to have the letter suppressed by the Federal Court was rejected by Justice Perram on Thursday in a ruling that also sought assurances that customers would not be extorted. The letters are expected to be reviewed by the judge before they are sent out.

A telephone number will be provided for people who get the letters to either admit guilt or alternatively provide the phone number, address and email address of someone they believe to be the real downloader.

They are warned that court action could be the next step.

"DBC and Voltage consider the level of piracy of the film to be egregious and, taking into account the profound impact of piracy on them, intend to take legal proceedings against any person who has engaged in piracy of the film," the letters warns.

"Unless you call the above telephone number to speak with someone directly about negotiating a settlement, then please respond to this letter, in writing, to [insert email address], within 28 days from the date on the front page of this letter.

"If you do not, then court action may be commenced against you without further notice."

If the alleged downloaders are under 18, then parents and guardians will be asked to hand over their personal details.

"If the person whom you believe to have engaged in Piracy is under 18 years of age, then please provide us with the full name and address of that person, confirm that that person is under 18 years of age, confirm whether you are the parent or guardian of that person and whether you are authorised to engage with us on behalf of that person," the letter will demand.

Fairfax Media has also seen a copy of the proposed question and answer telephone script that will be used by call centre operators speaking with people who receive the letters.

Callers who admit to the downloads will be asked to provide detailed personal answers including their employment status, whether or not they have a terminal illness, what their annual income is and whether or not they're serving in the military.

But the users will also be asked questions that could further incriminate them and cost thousands of dollars in extra penalties.

"How many titles do you have available now and in the past on the BitTorrent network?" call centre operators will ask, according to the script.

Screenshots from the draft script prepared for call centre workers dealing with the Dallas Buyers Club letter.

The operators will then warn that if a settlement is not negotiated then legal action may be taken to get payments for damages incurred and the costs of taking legal action.

However, legal experts and industry insiders have previously said that any Australian getting one of these threatening letters should remember that being linked to an IP address does not mean users are guilty.

Despite the legal threats, the letters themselves do not have the legal standing of a letter from a court or from law enforcement bodies such as the police.

Internet users have previously been strongly advised to seek legal advice and told that being identified or receiving a letter was not proof of guilt.
