Vegemite chocolate taste test: is Cadbury's new block awesome or evil?

Combining Australia’s most beloved breakfast spread with milk chocolate seems like the fever dream of a chocoholic who is looking for an excuse – any excuse – to start the chocolate eating early.

And so at 8.30 on Monday morning the Guardian newsdesk overcame their squeamishness and tasted the new offering from Cadbury – a milk chocolate block with caramel and Vegemite.

But where is the Vegemite?

Thankfully it’s not oozing out of the blocks where the caramel should be. That would be the stuff of science fiction (up there with the alien baby bursting out of Sigourney Weaver’s stomach in Aliens) – and would be a disgusting proposition to even to the most hardcore Vegemite fan.

Instead the addition of Vegemite is much more subtle – apparently mixed more or less evenly through the chocolate, and producing a salty edge to the Cadbury sweetness that is so in vogue today (think salted caramel everything).

The odour of Vegemite – so special, so unique – is still there, but more subtle. You have to hold the chocolate right up to your nose (giving new meaning to the term brown-nose) to get a whiff of yeast extract.

But not so subtle is the snack’s aftertaste. Once the chocolate has evaporated off the tongue and down the throat, a curious taste remains. It doesn’t resemble the beautiful, tangy, salty gloriousness of Vegemite spread on hot-buttered toast, instead it tastes like licking a plate where Vegemite was smeared, many months ago, then left in the sink to fester.

It’s an old taste. And not pleasant. But no matter. It is morning – and there is coffee to wash it away.

So should you try Vegemite chocolate when it launches around Australia in June? (We found the block we’re trying in a Coles supermarket in Manly, Sydney, but officially it’s out in June.) From a business perspective, the marriage of the two ingredients make sense: Cadbury and Kraft, producers of Dairy Milk and Vegemite, are both owned by Mondelēz International – a US food conglomerate. But just because you like – or even love – both passionately and separately doesn’t mean you should combine them.

Here’s the verdict on Cadbury Vegemite from some of my colleagues:

Yum … then yuck
“As both a huge fan of sea salt-flavoured dark chocolate and someone who has grown up eating Straya’s favourite yeast spread with a spoon, this happy little Vegemite was thrilled to get her mitts on two squares of Cadbury’s latest creation.

“The first bite was a surprise; I hadn’t expected to taste both flavours so distinctly and yet simultaneously. The next few nibbles were a thrilling contrast in familiar flavours: the umami hit of the Veg wrapped in the super-sweet Dairy Milk.

“Overall though it ‘ate sweet’ and won a big thumbs up from me. But five minutes later it was a different story. The ‘finish’ was all Vegemite. An hour later that’s still all I can taste and I feel a bit grubby. Verdict: an entertaining curiosity for the midnight wanderers.” Nikki Marshall

Would be better with dark chocolate
“At first it tastes like normal chocolate but then a hint of saltiness creeps in. It’s quite pleasant until you realise that it’s also filled with overly sweet caramel. It sounds as though it should work, but it’s just too sugary – I imagine a dark, bitter chocolate with Vegemite would work far better. Would not eat again.” Alan Evans

The Pirate Bay domain seized, sets sail for new home.

Toward the end of last year, the piracy community received a devastating blow when the world’s most popular torrent site, The Pirate Bay, was raided and shut down. Though memorials were constructed in its absence — even one allowing you to create your own Pirate Bay — it didn’t take long for the Bay to return. Now, though, the Pirate Bay is once again on the run. A court has ordered its main domain to be seized, and the site is looking for a new place to call home.

With the reasoning that they’re linked to copyright crimes, the Stockholm District Court ordered that the Pirate Bay’s two main domains, thepiratebay.se and piratebay.se, were to be seized. Laughing in the face of the court order, the torrent site has already instituted redirects from the Swedish domains that lead to six other domains around the world. The site even created a new logo celebrating the new domains, adding hydra heads to the iconic Pirate Bay ship.

Cut off one head, more shall take its place.

In a comment made to TorrentFreak, the Pirate Bay takes a jab at the court order, saying “Congratulations to Prosecutor Fredrik Ingblad. Two years hard work to get us to change two little letters at a cost of $20,000 per letter. He could have given us $35,000 and we would have left the domain, thus saving the Swedish tax payer $5,000. All he had to do was ask nicely.”

Meanwhile, massively popular TV torrent site and distribution group EZTV has recently shut down operations, bowing out of the scene due to a group of scammers managing to steal the group’s domains and trusted name. The Pirate Bay has sailed around the web before, and no matter what raid or seizure befalls the community, it pops right back up in short order. Perhaps the Stockholm court should’ve hired a group of scammers to take down The Pirate Bay instead.

The Guinness World Records has announced that the longest flight on a real life hoverboard was pulled off by Catalin Alexandru Duru. He rode 905 feet and 2 inches to achieve the record, and you can watch him accomplish the feat in the video below. It may not be on the Back to the Future II style hoverboard that we've all been dreaming about since 1989, but it's a step forward.

This hoverboard is powered by an insanely powerful quadcopter, and it’s pretty awesome. The one benefit that this hoverboard has over the the one Marty McFly uses in Back to the Future II is it can move over water.

The creator of the board said:

"The first real-life hoverboard. The machine was built and designed by me, Catalin Alexandru Duru. I am the first man to create and fly a working prototype.

"I will showcase that stable flight can be achieved with a machine one can stand on and control with their feet, just like in the movie "Back to the Future Part II". In our case, the machine is propeller-based.

"The prototype can be used anywhere, but is usually tested over water because of how dangerously high it can fly (which is ironic considering that the movie joked that it can't)."

George Romero's Marvel Comic, Empire of the Dead set to become a television series.

The man who created the modern perception of zombies will now bring the undead to the small screen. Variety reports that George A. Romero, director of Night of the Living Dead — the film which redefined the idea of a zombie apocalypse — will write a new TV series based on his Marvel Comic Empire of the Dead. Demarest Films made the announcement at the Cannes Film Festival today, so this project is in the very early stages and doesn't have a network home yet.

Here's the official synopsis of Empire of the Dead's first issue:

Welcome to New York City years after the undead plague has erupted—but just because Manhattan has been quarantined, don’t think that everyone inside is safe! Not only do flesh-eaters roam within Manhattan, but there’s another ancient predator about to take a bite out of the Big Apple!
That other ancient predator they mention? Vampires. The combination of vampires and zombies should be enough to separate this from both The Walking Dead and The Strain, and the idea that the father of the zombie genre himself is writing it (alongside his partner Peter Grunwald) will obviously be a big draw for fans. That's all the information that's out there about this project at the moment, but we'll be sure to keep you up to date.

Giant kangaroo intimidates Brisbane's North Lakes

Residents in North Lakes, Brisbane, are being kept on the hop.

A massive kangaroo has been spotted on walking tracks in parks and even on the golf course.

Smaller kangaroos are often seen in the area but the big buck stands out from the troop - he has a distinctive tear in his left ear.

Local Linda Hellyer said he is arguably North Lakes most imposing resident.

“He's very intimidating he's a big boy.”

He is more than two metres tall and weighs up to 95 kilograms.

He's the last thing you would expect to run into while walking in the suburbs. But Ms Hellyer came close.

“We turned the corner and old mate jumped out he's very big and I don't want to take him on.

He's got massive, massive muscles, big pecs and everything and he stood up because he was obviously a bit frightened of the dogs,” she said.

But she made sure she kept her distance.

“We didn't intend to get that close because we obviously know kangaroos can be a bit dangerous.”

Allan James also saw the big boy roaming around.

“It's a big one, it is a big roo and I'm used to animals from out in the west and it is a big roo.”
