Audi Engineers Have Successfully Made Diesel Fuel From Carbon Dioxide And Water


German car manufacturer Audi has reportedly invented a carbon-neutral diesel fuel, made solely from water, carbon dioxide and renewable energy sources. And the crystal clear ‘e-diesel’ is already being used to power the Audi A8 owned by the country’s Federal Minister of Education and Research, Johanna Wanka.

The creation of the fuel is a huge step forward for sustainable transport, but the fact that it’s being backed by an automotive giant is even more exciting. Audi has now set up a pilot plant in Dresden, Germany, operated by clean tech company Sunfire, which will pump out 160 litres of the synthetic diesel every day in the coming months.

Their base product, which they’re calling ‘blue crude’ is created using a three-step process. The first step involves harvesting renewable energy from sources such as wind, solar and hydropower. They then use this energy to split water into oxygen and pure hydrogen, using a process known as reversible electrolysis.

This hydrogen is then mixed with carbon monoxide (CO), which is created from carbon dioxide (CO2) that’s been harvested from the atmosphere. The two react at high temperatures and under pressure, resulting in the production of the long-chain hydrocarbon compounds that make up the blue crude.

Once it’s been refined, the resulting e-diesel can be mixed in with our current diesel fuel, or used on its own to power cars in a more sustainable way.

Sunfire analyses have shown that the synthetic fuel is not only more environmentally friendly, but also has superior combustion when compared to fossil fuels. The overall energy efficiency of the e-diesel is 70 percent, they report.

“The engine runs quieter and fewer pollutants are being created,” said Sunfire Chief Technology Officer Christian von Olshausen in a press release.

Of course, with the initial factory only pumping out around 160 litres each day, the fuel isn’t going to have a huge impact on the market just yet. But Audi and Sunfire now want to build a bigger factory, and anticipate that once production is scaled up, the e-diesel will sell to the public for between 1 and 1.50 Euros per litre, dependent on the cost of renewable electricity.

With traditional diesel currently on the market for upwards of 1.50 Euros per litre in Germany, this would make the fuel extremely competitive, and perfectly positioned to made sustainable travel accessible to everyone. “If we get the first sales order, we will be ready to commercialise our technology”, said von Olshausen.

Just imagine being able to tear around the countryside in an Audi sportscar, and not having to feel guilty for all the CO2 emissions you’re producing. We can’t wait.

Don't know if this is the right place to be asking this but I'll try anyway. I've got a 1972 car I'm buying and it has a 5 pt race harness instead of the stock seatbelts. Would this be street legal as it is pre 1974? I've been searching for an answer and found conflicting opinions so any help/proof would be appreciated.

You need to refit the standard seat belt and wear it at all times. The 5 point harness isn't legal for street use - you can wear it, but you must also use the standard belt whilst on the street.

Doesn't matter the year of make, if you're re registering the vehicle. ie vehicles that weren't fitted with rear seat belts originally, must be fitted with them upon registration.

Which state regulations are we dealing with there though Alpha?He's already stated that he has had conflicting reports, I'll stick with my post,and say he's better off getting the info from the people that make and enforce the rules,a racing harness in a vehicle that vintage has made me a little :squint:

A racing harness isn't going to have an ADR tag for road use on it shuffs, and/or be likely to be using the standard seat belt mounting points.

You're not dealing with a state law, it'll be federal legislation.

I'm on my phone atm so not going to attempt to find/research the legislation.

Dwarf stripper impregnates bride-to-be at her bachelorette party

A Spanish woman had to confess to cheating on her husband with a dwarf stripper after she became pregnant at her bachelorette party and gave birth to a baby with dwarfism.

The woman, from Valencia, Spain, initially convinced her husband that she conceived the child on their honeymoon, but broke down and confessed the truth after he questioned doctors about how the child could have been born with the condition.

According to local reports questions were also raised by friends who accompanied the unnamed bride on her bachelorette party earlier this year.

Spanish website Las Cinco Del Dia (The Daily Five) said: “Neither her closest female friends or her family knew she had sex with the midget stripper but once she had her son in her arms, she broke down and confessed what had happened.

"As you can imagine no-one that sleeps with a stripper at her hen night broadcasts it or at least they try to take their secret to the grave.

"But the protagonist of this episode had no choice but to confess and could never have pretended the boy was her husband’s because of a little problem - the child was born with dwarfism."

A Spaniard working as a dwarf stripper told the Daily Mail: ‘I know colleagues working out of Valencia but I'm not aware of any of them getting involved in something like this.

‘They're mostly men in their forties and fifties and who's going to want to sleep with a man that age. There must be about ten of us doing this line of work in Spain.'

Entertainers with dwarfism are known as 'miniboys' in Spain and are a fairly common form of entertainment at bachelor and bachelorette parties.
