A great gun for the US military the GAU 8 Gatling gun installed on the A-10 ground attack aircraft is combat proven and has served the US Military well. The General Electric GAU-8/A Avenger is a 30 mm hydraulically driven seven-barrel Gatling-type cannon that is typically mounted to the United States Air Force's Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II. Designed specifically for the anti-tank role, the Avenger delivers very powerful rounds at a high rate of fire. The GAU-8/A is also used in the Goalkeeper CIWS ship weapon system, which provides defense against short-range threats.

Maximum firing range Over 12,000 feet (3,660 m)
Feed system Linkless feed system

Design[edit]
The GAU-8 itself weighs 620 pounds (280 kg), but the complete weapon, with feed system and drum, weighs 4,029 pounds (1,828 kg) with a maximum ammunition load. It measures 19 ft 5 1⁄2 in (5.931 m) from the muzzle to the rearmost point of the ammunition system, and the ammunition drum alone is 34.5 inches (88 cm) in diameter and 71.5 inches (1.82 m) long.[5] Power for operating the gun is provided by twin hydraulic motors pressurized from two independent hydraulic systems. The magazine can hold 1,174 rounds, although 1,150 is the typical load-out. Muzzle velocity when firing Armor-Piercing Incendiary rounds is 3,250 feet per second (990 m/s), almost the same as the substantially lighter M61 Vulcan's 20 mm round.

The standard ammunition mixture for anti-armor use is a five-to-one mix of PGU-14/B Armor Piercing Incendiary, with a projectile weight of about 14.0 oz (395 grams or 6,096 grains) and PGU-13/B High Explosive Incendiary (HEI) rounds, with a projectile weight of about 13.3 oz (378 grams or 5,833 grains).[6] The PGU-14/B's projectile incorporates a lightweight aluminum body, cast around a smaller caliber depleted uranium penetrating core.[7] The Avenger is lethal against tanks and all other armored vehicles.

A very important innovation in the design of the GAU-8/A ammunition is the use of aluminum alloy cases in place of the traditional steel or brass.[8] This alone adds 30% to ammunition capacity for a given weight. The projectiles incorporate a plastic driving band to improve barrel life. The shells are imposing to examine and handle, measuring 11.4 inches (290 mm) in length and weighing 1.53 pounds (0.69 kg) or more.[5][8]

The Avenger's rate of fire was originally selectable, 2,100 rounds per minute (rpm) in the low setting, or 4,200 rpm in the high setting.[9] Later this was changed to a fixed rate of 3,900 rpm.[10] In practice, the cannon is limited to one and two-second bursts to avoid overheating and conserve ammunition; barrel life is also a factor, since the USAF has specified a minimum life of at least 20,000 rounds for each set of barrels.[11] There is no technical limitation on the duration the gun may be continuously fired, and a pilot could potentially expend the entire ammunition load in a single burst with no damage or ill effects to the weapons system itself. However, this constant rate of fire would shorten the barrel life considerably and require added barrel inspections and result in shorter intervals between replacement.

Each barrel is a very simple non-automatic design having its own breech and bolt. Like the original Gatling gun, the entire firing cycle is actuated by cams and powered by the rotation of the barrels.[8] The barrels themselves are driven by the aircraft's dual hydraulic system.[11]

The GAU-8/A ammunition is linkless, reducing weight and avoiding a great deal of potential for jamming. The feed system is double-ended, allowing the spent casings to be recycled back into the ammunition drum,[12] instead of ejected from the aircraft, which would require considerable force to eliminate potential airframe damage. The feed system is based on that developed for later M61 installations, but uses more advanced design techniques and materials throughout, to save weight.[5]

Firing system[edit]
Accuracy[edit]
The GAU-8/A is extremely accurate and can fire 4,200 rounds per minute without complications. The 30-mm shell has twice the range, half the time to target,

As far as the orchard went, the three oldest blocks didn't fare too badly,no trees down, just a couple of limbs blown out,but the young block took a fair hammering, which we expected.Too much to mulch,so we have a string of new fire piles on the headlands. It's going to be fun burning them, because they are are full of nut, which have the tendency to explode when burned,so there will be a lot of ducking and weaving on the day

The 3d printer thing is the way of the future shuffs, Imagine you busted an ABS part of machine X or appliance Y, download the file, print away problem solved,
I guess with these 3d printed guns they never show the accuracy, any average machinist has been able to bang out an AR15 or an AK47, the issue has always been the barrel and rifling for strength and accuracy.

My biggest worry as far as a 3d printed weapon is if someone made a 50cal version of a paintball gun using old 50cal musket balls and nitrogen as the propellant, imagine fully auto mech to throw a .50 cal. projectile and get 230 ft-lbs @ 700fps, very serious almost silent weapon, then there is the option of a nitrogen powered arrow gun with steel heads, no rifling required for that beast. No gunpowder residue, all legal to possess the ammo.....

The newer 3d metal printers are going to raise the bar a bit more again

But this time I'm hunting for an 04 05 Sti in silver. found a few in mint condition. One has 118k which is abit high for my liking at $25k But then there is one with only 32.xxx ks but his asking price is absurd at $32k

Jlo was having a great ride.. lead for most of the race. swapping positions with Dovi many times for the lead..
Rossi is fighting his way up from 10th position and with about 6 laps to go Rossi passes JLo for 2nd spot.
Rossi and Dovi both pull away from him having an awesome battle. then Iannone takes 3rd position.. JLo finishes 4th..

QUOTE
Jorge Lorenzo:
It was a difficult race. After the first lap, I found myself in second place and I followed Dovizioso. I was faster and I passed him where I could in the fast corners. On the speed and in braking the Ducati was much stronger than our bike, but we could recover on corner speed while the acceleration was similar. To be honest, I thought that I could win the race, though it surely wasnt going to be easy, because Valentino had a very strong pace at the end of the race. I was feeling better and better, but suddenly there was something wrong when in the top part of the helmet the foam came loose and came down so I lost half of my vision. I couldnt see the corners very well and couldnt concentrate or ride like before and I was losing half a second or more per lap. In a race where, at minimum I could fight for the win, I finished fourth.

helmet looks fine to me.. maybe he pushed the foam back up on the cool down lap.. who knows..

last time he was leading and Rossi overtook him and claimed he had a mosquito in his helmet..
maybe he needs a new helmet designer.. ?
either way if he had no problems i still think he wouldnt of been able to keep up with Rossi or Dovi.. he was running both soft option
tyres, i figured he was having problem with edge grip, where as Rossi was running hard option which would of been his
advantage towards the end..

anothe pic.. hard to tell but looks like something isnt right in the helmet..

pretty funny really, but there's a book waiting to be thrown at the driver, although proving who was driving will be another thing.

the first two cars didn't have rego plates on the rear, that silver car that nearly got took out by the truck did have a plate, somewhat obscured but possibly a lead for the fuzz.

amazing how it's the little things that break your concentration. last year at Bathurst - i think it was Russell Ingall - was taken out by being distracted by a plastic bag blowing over the track and missed the corner's apex, bang into the wall, broke the car.

Tiger Woods falls out of the top 100 in the world
For the first time since 1996, Tiger Woods is not among the top 100 golfers in the world ranking.

Woods, who hasn't played since he withdrew from the Farmers Insurance Open on Feb. 6, falls to No. 104 this week. The last time he was out of the top 100 was on Sept. 29, 1996, when he was at No. 225. The following week, Woods won the Las Vegas Invitational as a 20-year-old for the first of his 79 PGA Tour victories.

It is not clear when Woods will return. He said in February that his scores were not acceptable and he would not play until his game was in tournament shape.

Woods is not required to announce if he is playing the Masters until the tournament starts April 9.

Yeah I prefer the R33's over the others. R34's are way out of my budget so I'm not even considering getting one anytime soon. The R32's are the classic ones, but user-friendliness they're aren't as refined for a daily.

It's weird walking out of the garage seeing this thing sitting there, hard to believe I own it haha. I missed the bumpy ride and the loud exhaust, and the weekends gone servicing your car and looking at it going "hmmmmm, what else could i spend my money on on this thing"
