Two arrested after high-speed police pursuit around Brisbane


Two people have been arrested just over the NSW border after a high-speed police chase through Brisbane.

Reports suggest the chase began after a number of alleged hijackings at gunpoint in Morayfield, before the car led them at high speeds through the Queensland capital.

PolAir tracked the vehicle, which crossed the border into NSW at speeds of up to 170km/h before it was brought to a halt and two people arrested.

Officers say shots were fired before the arrests were carried out.

Queensland Police tweeted they were liaising with NSW Police over the incident.

The car involved in the chase, believed to be a blue Mitsubishi Lancer, is believed to be the second one stolen.

Witnesses told 9NEWS one of the carjacking victims had a baby in their vehicle, which the alleged gunman ordered them to remove before driving away.

It is believed the first car was hijacked from an undercover carpark, before the driver realised it was out of fuel and stole another waiting at a set of traffic lights.

The car is believed to have started driving dangerously in the Caboolture area.

It then headed southbound along the highway to Northlakes after leading police on a wild chase through the suburban streets of Deception Bay.

It left the main highway and continued heading southbound along the Gateway Bridge, possibly towards the Gold Coast.

The driver has now passed Brisbane and is believed to be south of the main city.

The blue car was seen speeding and driving on footpaths and the median strip through suburban streets and past at least one school.

It has sped through several intersections, nearly causing a number of accidents.

A police chopper was following the vehicle along with a police car about 300m behind.

Jordan kills 55 IS militants after pilot is burned to death

Jordan has carried out a series of deadly air strikes against Islamic State, a day after the extremist group released a video showing the horrific murder of a captive Jordanian pilot.

Local media reports 55 insurgents, including a top IS commander known as the ‘Prince of Nineveh,’ have been killed.

In the 20-minute video, 26-year-old Lt. Muath al-Kaseasbeh is shown standing inside a cage wearing an orange jumpsuit.

He appears to have been badly beaten.

In the final moments, a masked militant lights a trail of petrol leading inside the cage and then stands back to watch as the young pilot burns to death.

The video has unleashed a wave of outrage around the world, with Jordanian king Abdullah II declaring there would be a ‘severe’ response.

“The blood of martyr Maaz al-Kassasbeh will not be in vain, and the response of Jordan and its army after what happened to our dear son will be severe,” the King said in a statement.

On Wednesday, Jordan executed two al-Qaeda prisoners, including a failed female suicide bomber, both of whom were hanged.

The King also vowed to further increase Jordan's role in the U-S led coalition against IS.

Jordanian king vows 'relentless' war on Islamic State's own ground

Jordan's King Abdullah vowed a "relentless" war against Islamic State on their own territory on Wednesday in response to a video published by the hard-line group showing a captured Jordanian air force pilot being burned alive in a cage.

Jordan hanged two Iraqi jihadists, one a woman, on Wednesday and vowed to intensify military action against Islamic State.

"We are waging this war to protect our faith, our values and human principles and our war for their sake will be relentless and will hit them in their own ground," state television quoted the king as saying during a security meeting.

Glitter blows kisses as he is found guilty of sex offences


Former glam rock star Gary Glitter is facing a lengthy jail term after being found guilty of a string of historical sex offences against three young girls.

His victims included one who was less than 10-years-old when he crept into her bed and tried to rape her in 1975.

Glitter was also guilty of having sex with a 12-year-old and indecently assaulting a 13-year-old.

He had met the two backstage on separate occasions and they were alone with him after being isolated from their mothers, a court heard.

The former chart topper was at the height of his fame when he preyed on the youngsters.

The disgraced singer, whose real name is Paul Gadd, was found guilty of one count of attempted rape, four indecent assaults and one count of sexual intercourse.

Gadd, 70, shook his head and pursed his lips as the verdicts were read out at Southwark Crown Court.

He blew kisses to a public gallery full of reporters as he was remanded in custody and led down to the cells.

Judge Alistair McCreath told him: "In light of verdicts, I am remanding him in custody."

Gadd attacked the 12-year-old girl after a show at a Leicester nightclub in 1977.

She initially went backstage with her mother and had a gold jacket autographed while drinking champagne, but was then invited to the singer's hotel suite.

Jurors were told Gadd pushed her on to a bed and subjected her to a prolonged period of sexual abuse.

He was convicted of carrying out two indecent assaults against her and one count of sexual intercourse.

The third girl was aged 13 when the singer invited her to sit on his lap in his dressing room between October 1979 and December 1980.

He forcefully kissed the youngster and then slid his hand up her skirt. He was found guilty of carrying out two indecent assaults against her.

Gadd was convicted by a jury of five men and seven women and will be sentenced on 27 February.

He was cleared of two counts of indecent assault and one count of administering a drug or other thing in order to facilitate sexual intercourse.

Gadd, from Marylebone, central London, denied all the allegations.

He claimed there was no way he could have abused the girls in his dressing room because his rigorous wig-maintenance routine required him to return to his suite immediately and clean his hairpiece.

The allegations came to light only around 40 years later when Gadd became the first person to be arrested under Operation Yewtree - the investigation launched by the Met in the wake of the Jimmy Savile scandal.

The glam-rocker had suffered a spectacular fall from grace, when he admitted possessing 4,000 images of child pornography and was jailed for four months in 1999.

In 2002 Glitter was expelled from Cambodia over unspecified allegations, and in March 2006 he was convicted of sexually abusing two girls, aged 10 and 11, in Vietnam.

During the trial in London, all three of Glitter's victims sobbed as they recounted their ordeals.

Baljit Ubhey, from the Crown Prosecution Service, said: "Paul Gadd abused his access to young fans in order to give himself the opportunities to assault and abuse his victims. Crimes such as these have repercussions for victims that can last for a lifetime.

"The bravery of the victims and other witnesses in this case cannot be understated and their testimony has been vital in bringing Paul Gadd to justice. I hope today's verdict will be of some small help to these victims."

When asked whether any other complainants had come forward during the course of the trial, a Met police spokeswoman said: "Officers have received other information and it is currently being assessed."

After weeks of speculation, the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit 2015 cover star has been revealed.

Hannah Davis was named as the face of the much-hyped annual edition on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday night.

For the cover shoot, the 24-year-old model wears a typically skimpy bikini which she appears to be in the process of removing, striking a provocative pose that some have deemed too rude.

The cover, shot by Australian photographer Ben Watts - brother of Naomi - not in the usual beachy setting but on a farm in Tennessee, is always a closely guarded secret each year. Even the model chosen for the cover only finds out at the last minute. Unsurprisingly, Davis was stunned to learn on Tuesday that 2015 was her lucky year. "They do beaches for covers and I'm on a farm. There's no way. It's not possible," she reportedly told her mother after her shoot.

This is the third time Davis, a former runway model, has appeared in the pages of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue. She can only hope to follow in the successful footsteps of previous Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover models like Kate Upton and Elle Macpherson.

Aside from Davis, the other big winner in SI Swimsuit is plus-size models. Yesterday it was revealed that size-16 model Ashley Graham would feature in an advertisement for a swimsuit label published in the mag, making her the first plus-size model to grace its pages.

It turns out Graham will share that honour with Australian model Robyn Lawley, who looks pleased as punch to be photographed for the mag in a teeny orange bikini in front of a picturesque mountain lake.

The law needs to slow down, not the speeding drivers

The setting and enforcement of speed limits has also been driven by a desire to raise revenue, not save lives, says David Leyonjelm.

DID you get booked for speeding over the January holidays? Did you feel bad about it? There is no need to.

Speed limits are too low, set by the wrong people, and police labour under the ­ridiculous notion that by ­enforcing them they can ­reduce road accidents.

And if you were booked under the “hoon” laws, the same applies. There is no need to feel bad.

There is nothing wrong with having a modified car or doing burnouts, provided you didn’t endanger other people. The police may think they’re doing something useful for society by harassing you, but they’re wrong. They’re the ones who should feel bad.

This isn’t to suggest some people should not be on the road or that we don’t need road laws. Driver licensing and our road laws help the majority of drivers get to their destination safely.

However, speed limits and hoon laws make minimal contribution to that. Despite the vast growth in cars on our roads, it’s thanks to improved vehicle and road design, along with getting drunk drivers off the road, that our annual road fatalities are now at historic lows.

And yet, governments and the police maintain an obsession with speed and hoons.

Over the years there has been a law-and-order auction by state governments to introduce the most draconian laws against car enthusiasts, giving police the right to do almost anything to anyone they deem a petrol-head.

The setting and enforcement of speed limits has also been driven by a desire to raise revenue, not save lives.

With the NSW election approaching, it’s a safe bet we’re going to hear more talk about law-and-order.

Laws targeting hoons ­reveal a great deal about our governments. The most draconian legislation is invariably drawn up by the most authoritarian and ­arrogant regimes.

Unsurprisingly, Queensland leads the way, with laws allowing police to confiscate first offenders’ cars for three months. The owner is required to pay $20 to $80 a day for impounding the car.

Second offenders may have their cars sold or crushed.

In NSW, much wasting of police time and resources is devoted to things such as “defect stations” where owners must prove identified faults do not infringe regulations.

But the worst thing is the licence given to police to target car enthusiasts.

No distinction is made between regular car enthusiasts and those who ­endanger others. If they don’t like the look of you, it’ll cost you. Ordinary citizens who choose to own a modified car, or even a standard high- performance vehicle, are stopped and hassled without reason.

Worse, police in various states are now able to charge you for dangerous driving on private property when you’re clearly not a danger to the public. Your vehicle can even be impounded when parked on your property.

The role of the police and the laws they enforce should be to protect the public from others, not protect people from themselves or prevent behaviour of which politicians and the police ­disapprove.

ISIS releases guide to women’s rights: ‘Stay in your houses,’ girls can marry at nine, education to age of 15
Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant militants have published a manifesto for women living under their rule, including marriage at nine, education to the age of 15, and an escape from the harsh dictates of Western feminism.
The document, published only in Arabic and translated by the anti-militant group Quilliam, says it is wrong to deny a woman education but that “the greatness of her position, the purpose of her existence is the divine duty of motherhood.”

The document stresses that it is supportive of women’s rights – just that it has a different view of why she needs those rights compared with the West.

It says women should be educated because they cannot fulfill their duty if they are illiterate or ignorant. However, the curriculum it advises focuses strongly on religious education, with sidelines in basic science, and “skills like textiles and knitting, basic cooking.”

That is actually reasonably high ground there,where I fell foul there was I went that little bit too far,and because the water table is still rising,literally sank.Since I mowed last,I've probably lost six metres to the creek,and nine times out of ten,can get myself out of trouble.The dilemma I face is that when, particularly with the Setaria along the creek,starts getting too long,the rat population starts going apeshit.We are currently in the midst of clean up,which involves sweeping out all the old nut (and some of this seasons,which has started dropping),and mulching it up,to give a clean plate for this seasons nut to drop on to.What I've been noticing,is,when I get close to the creek,the amount of rat chewed nut,because the little shits are running sorties from the creek.If they start digging burrows close to the trees,you can chuck a few baits out,but while they're living in the creek,the only thing that will slow them down is a small flood,so there's a fair chance I will get bogged again
