Man dead after being shot twice by police at Redcliffe after hoax triple-0 calls traced

A man is dead after being shot twice by police at Redcliffe, north of Brisbane, following reports of a number of hoax triple-0 calls.

Two male officers went to a house on Elizabeth Avenue last night after tracing the hoax calls.

Superintendent Mick Brady said the situation immediately turned violent and the officers opened fire after the 33-year-old suspect lunged at them with a knife.

"That has resulted in him being shot twice [and he] succumbed to his injuries," he said.

Superintendent Brady said the officers involved in the shooting were in shock but were otherwise unharmed.

"Obviously it's very traumatic for all those involved," he said.

Police were interviewing other residents who were inside the home at the time.

The Police Ethical Standards Command and the Crime and Corruption Commission were investigating.

Honda debuts new hydrogen fuel cell concept

While Toyota's Mirai is set to go on sale in the US next year, Honda has unveiled its own FCV concept, heralding the manufacture of a new sedan to be launched in 2016.

Honda promises that the FCV Concept (Fuel Cell Vehicle) can travel 300 miles (or more than 480 km) on a single tank of hydrogen and be refueled in under five minutes.

The production model (claiming approx. 130 hp) will comfortably seat up to five people and will be launched in Japan and North America first, with Europe to follow.

Honda has already launched a very limited edition fuel cell electric sedan in Japan and in the US: the FCX Clarity.

This year at the Los Angeles Auto Show, the brand is expected to provide details on its plans to expand its public hydrogen refueling station network in the US.

Honda's announcement parallels Toyota’s FCV project, which was first unveiled as a concept at the Paris Auto Show and went on to become the Mirai. The sedan will launch next year in Germany, Denmark, Great Britain and the United States.

Emitting only water vapor, fuel cell electric vehicles produce zero carbon emissions.

F1 driver Bianchi out of coma, back in France after horror crash

Formula One driver Jules Bianchi has been brought out of an artificial coma and arrived back in France on Wednesday nearly seven weeks after his near-fatal crash at the Japanese Grand Prix.

The 25-year-old Frenchman's family said in a statement that the Marussia driver was still listed as "critical" and that he could remain in a serious way for a long time.

They said they were delighted that he has stabilised enough to be flown to a hospital in Nice, near the family home.

"Jules is no longer in the artificial coma in which he was placed shortly after the accident, however he is still unconscious," read the statement.

"He is breathing unaided and his vital signs are stable, but his condition is still classified as 'critical'."

Bianchi, who crashed into a recovery vehicle on the rain-drenched Suzuka track on October 5, was flown back to France on Wednesday.

"Jules' neurological condition remains stable," the statement reported.

"Although the situation continues to be serious and may remain so, it was decided that Jules was sufficiently stable to be repatriated to his native France."

Bianchi, who had been at hospital at Yokkaichi near Suzuka, is now at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire's intensive care unit in Nice.

"We are thankful that the next phase of Jules' treatment can continue close to home, where he can be surrounded and supported by his wider family and friends," said the statement.

The stricken French driver's family concluded by expressing gratitude for the care Bianchi had received in Japan.

His return home to France was welcomed by his fellow pitlane drivers.

"good news about @Jules_Bianchi. gives me a good feeling that he his back in his home country. Tous avec Jules #17" wrote Nico Rosberg on Twitter.

"Great you hear some positive news about Jules. #ForzaJules" wrote former world champion Jenson Button.

Bianchi was left fighting for his life in a freak crash when his Marussia ploughed at high speed into a recovery vehicle removing the stricken Sauber of Adrian Sutil.

The crash led to a major safety review.

Marussia scored their first points at this year's Monaco Grand Prix when Bianchi finished ninth but have gone bust since the accident, making 200 staff redundant.

‘Schumacher paralysed, unable to speak’
SEVEN-TIME world champion Michael Schumacher is in a wheelchair and suffering memory and speech problems, according to former Formula 1 driver Philippe Streiff.

Streiff, who himself has been wheelchair-bound since a 1989 crash in Brazil, is a good friend of Schumacher’s and said he had visited the F1 legend recently.

“It’s very difficult. He can’t speak. Like me, he is in a wheelchair, paralysed. He has memory problems and speech problems,” Streiff told French radio.

Schumacher’s spokesperson Sabine Kehm chose not to comment on Schumacher’s condition, but said Streiff’s comments were “his opinions”.

“[Streiff] did not have contact with us,” Kehm added.
Last Thursday, the Schumacher family posted on his official website, thanking fans and well-wishers “for facing this fight together with him and us”.

It added: “We remain confident and hope the best for Michael. Your strength is helping us to keep supporting him.”

The statement gave no new details about his condition.

Schumacher suffered a serious head injury while skiing in France at the end of December, and his manager said in September that he had been released from a Swiss hospital to continue his recovery at home.

Schumacher’s website was reactivated on Thursday to mark the 20th anniversary of his first F1 title.
