Hi. I am new to this site .I saw in an old post that some one was enquiring about the first Cannonball run. This run started at Sunbury and finished at Freemantle Perth. The supposed winner was driving a Holden 2 tonner . However the official winner was a Holden Commodore VK Interceptor driven by John Crowle , Ian Bray and a third unknown driver. I know this for a fact because I was there,... John Crowle

What year was this John? I'd never heard of it before. Any more details The Very first Australian Cannonball Run was 1984 From Sunbury Vic to Freemantle Perth. The first across the line was a Holden 2 tonner that was used as a transporter with extra fuel tanks. He was disqualified. ( Dont know why ) We Took 1st place in a Yellow Vk Commodore ex police car (Modified motor) and an extra fuel tank in the boot There was a prize of $10000.00 which was not paid because the promoter went bankrupt. All we got was a cup . Presented by the late Shirley Straughan ex lead singer of Skyhooks. There were some great cars including a ZF Fairlaine with a blower ..RT Charger ..LJ V8 Torana that passed our car on the Nullabor at over 200klm. I have some footage from TV but most was banned . |

John, 1984 you say, must have been late 84, first of the ex police Interceptors to hit the market were the SA police pale blue ones, July 84 then the Vic yellow ones about, August 84 they started at the auctions, L31 , M21 GU4, FE2 spec, nothing special. |

You would have needed the extra fuel, even the 90l tank would have only given you a 360-450klm range at best if full noise in a 308, the quadrajet or holley used about 20-25L/100km when sitting on a steady 240/250km/h at 5800 revs in top gear, (that is what my L34 would use on the Newell run) unless you had the T5G from the camaro as per the HDT spec road cars or the Getrag 290 as per the track cars. Post up some more Info, Strawbs won't have any, he confused his flying ambitions with his ablity a few years back. Good to see someone on the ball.. We had a home made fuel tank coupled to the original in the boot . We had to stop a couple of times to fill up which made the petrol stations happy. There was a VH in the run with a 5 speed out of Peter Brocks experimental stock. I believe that the box was relieved from Pete without his knowledge |

I was explaining myself as to why i asked "Why are you telling us this" Its a pre 85 CAR Discussions section, i often read being the owner of a pre 85 car and being a fan of old school cars in general... And since this is a thread about an EVENT not a car its not really in the right section itself... Well Since all the cars in this event were pre 1985 and since as I mentioned there were some seriously modified ones such as LJ v8 Blown ZJ etc then this is the right section. By the way Since I have been in the car trade for over 35 years and I have sold more early Camaros Mustangs Corvettes Monaros GT Falcons and other assorted fast cars.To which I am willing to share Facts and pics ,then I suggest you sit back, say nothing ,and enjoy the ride. |

Well post up pics/vids etc of said cars and make the so called ride enjoyable... at the moment it just seems like someone bragging about being in an event 30 odd years ago... Me say nothing??? |

Good to see someone on the ball.. We had a home made fuel tank coupled to the original in the boot . We had to stop a couple of times to fill up which made the petrol stations happy. There was a VH in the run with a 5 speed out of Peter Brocks experimental stock. I believe that the box was relieved from Pete without his knowledge Was that VH a Maranello red SS with the body kit?? I think it ran the getrag as well, most boxes no matter how tough they are, the heat and stress of long flat out runs in 5th soon cooks them. I used to run fairly low tech auto trans coolers on the diff and box. The type of cars you could build, with the type of parts available now would be mindblowing compared to the bodgy stuff from the 80's. I think the US still has the Silver state classic, I think after reading that article in 88, about the winning 69 Camaro in Hotrod magazine got me interested in long high speed runs, but the fuel/tyres/cost/safety issue, I was just happy to open it out for short 30 minute stints, there wasn't many places longer than 100 klms apart anyway and the shitty 55 litre tank in a Torana took car of that. I don't know how you could concentrate for that long to cross the Nullabor. It was weird the way how everything slowed down it seemed, once you went above 220km/h, it was only when approaching any traffic you realise how hard you had to brake to wash off speed to pass at a sensible pace, the speedo only went to 200 anyway and you could peg that by 3rd gear so mostly went by tacho. The last time I ever drove above 200 was in the xr6, but common sense got the better of me and I think nowdays you would get raped if you were caught. I can never see this ever happening, just due to the traffic on the roads nowdays. I did a lot of driving for work in western Queensland so just got used to cruising in the 120 to 140 range in work cars, the local police never seemed to mind, but that was during the day, not a car or truck around. Now you can't even go down the 4 lane M1 at any time day or night without fn wandering useless mongs using the optional lane choice and indication method. |
