Hell no I'm not comparing them!!! An E38 would rip anything to shreds.. still! I was using values of cars then and now as an example. I'm a Mopar boy!

Well being a Mopar boy you should know that a granny spec VL Executive isnt no where near in the league as a E38!!! If it was say a Brock SS or Walky it would be closer...

Save the money you were going to spend on the manual conversion and get some spelling lessons so that in ten years time you wont have to rely on your VL being a source of income.

Listen to the people, it's not worth anything and never will be because it isn't special or rare. It's just a base model VL commodore. 1 of 150,000

On a good note.. You should be able to manage some epic one wheel skids and get boss status at your local gathering of bogans

It's worth $2k now, $2k in the 10 years time.

It's up to you whether you'd like to spend money in maintenance for no extra resale value in the future.

In other words, cars aren't investments, stop trying to invest in cars. I just went through this thought process, you know in case I decide to keep my GTV for 20 years. It's going to cost me $20k to keep the car in good running condition probably, including insurance, rego, etc AT LEAST. I paid $10k for it 3 years ago. Your average 35 year old Alfa is worth at a stretch $10k on carsales and that's not even the "sell it in a week bargain" price, that's more the "wait until an enthusiast comes along with a chequebook" price.

Buy and own cars because of your interest in them, otherwise what is the point? You may as well collect die cast models, or something else. Probably be a better investment than a basic VL, which is you know, a fleet car with about the same value in use as any other old car. You may think your car is a great investment because the carpet is clean or some other ridiculous idea like that, but if it came down to it, you think your car is worth $1k extra because the carpet is clean, I'll come along and buy the next VL and put motherfcuking BRAND NEW carpet in that bitch.

My advice would be: if you want to convert it to manual, convert it to manual (they're more fun to drive anyway, I had a manual VL once). Since you have the foresight to see that keeping a car 100% original could be a good selling point in the future, store the original matching numbers gearbox.

I hate to think about the number of good quality original cars that have been sent for scrap metal because the trend at the time was that they were unpopular. Then when a few years pass, people get nostalgic about older cars and the value goes up because there are less of them around. Granted, a VL Exec is not going to increase exponentially in value but to the right buyer it may fetch a fairly decent price. But thinking about the future value of your car can be a heartbreaking thing, because you will always spend a lot more on them than you'll ever get back.
