90% of sh!t on most cars is illegal. Some of the mods are considered illegal by the police but id trust them over factory any day and id say alot of others would agree with me.

But it is a serious question id like to know. Iam not 100% committed on the idea but id like to at least know either way

Click on the link and it says "account suspended" which says something to me.I'm not sure about QLD,but I know for a fact that NSW Highway Patrol vehicles have detectors to detect radar detectors (mouthfull) in other vehicles. They give an audible warning if a car approaches with an operating radar detector,so the officer does not even have to be in his vehicle to be made aware of the fact.

I brought mine from there years ago. Seems like there not there anymore. You can buy Radar detectors that are undetectable by the police RDD (Radar detector detectors) Stealth radar detectors have been out for a few years now.

I wouldn't be to worried about customs picking it up, I'd be more so worried about losing the $500.. if you happy to take a risk of losing $500 then go for it.. if customs gets it and the deam it illegal in the country all they'll do is send you a letter in the mail saying they have your goods.. if you want to contest the decision you can go to caught or if you don't reply within 31 days they destroy the goods.. blah blah.. AFP will not go anywhere near your house for a mere $500 detector.. trust me I've had lots of letters in the mail lol

I think he usually sits in his, I've only seen him car surf like, four times.

I would trust those stealth radars as far as I could throw the police car that would get you for it...

Ask yourself, do you really need a detector?
Sure it looks real flashy etc, but if you follow the speed limits then why are you scared of a radar?
A lot of modern cars now have preset speed limiters where it alarms when you go over the set speed so you can keep below the limit. GPS's now also come standard with speed limiters that automatically update to the road you are on, and also tell you when you approach a fixed camera or redlight camera. Save the $500 and put it towards something useful like a annual park pass to movieworls/seaworld/wet'n'wild which pays for itself after you make your second visit there, or a day out on a deep sea fishing charter boat...

I don't often agree with shadow, but he's spot on. People always mock the whole 'if you've done nothing wrong, then you have nothing to be worried about' attitude, but 99% of the time, it's true. Rather than putting another device on your dash that will warn you of a radar, why not just pay more attention to speed limits and the speed you are doing?

once had a weekend drive convoy pulled up and inspected for revenue raiser detectors, based purely on the fact none of us were speeding through the speed trap. lol.

haha was literally asked "how come you are all driving under the speed limit?"
i had no answer, was so confused- i think another group went through nearby at same time (we'd split up), cop pulled over the first one, then as he walked over from his car the rest of that group crested the hill and sped past haha

yeh how about we all just forget attention to the road to look at the speedo every 1/2second? next time you get into an accident, just say you were looking at the speedo to make sure you wouldnt crash due to speed......

Aren't they still legal in WA? The radar detector, to my knowledge isn't illegal. It only becomes illegal once it's mounted in your car and driven on a public road, like a nitrous system. If that's the case then customs cannot do a thing. Edit: and if you can acquire them legally in Australia, why would buying one overseas be a problem if places sell them legally here?

But as mentioned before; Why do you desire one? Apart from wanting to break the law and not be caught.

Works well. They don't give you a licence to speed. You can travel around 15-20 klmph above the going rate out on the open road. Any more speed then that and you won't stop in the time it takes them to switch on and nab you. In the city they are hopeless. Unless you are doing lots of highway don't bother. If you know someone going to USA get them to bring it home. You can get them real cheap over there, like under $100, so maybe take the risk on getting one posted.

i can understand radar jammers being illegal. but why on earth is a detector illegal?

wolfman101
Post #25

The marked versus unmarked cameras debate clutch. <y(and probably your) stance is that marking cameras causes people to...SLOW DOWN IN BAD AREAS...which is allegedly what the goal of speed enforcement is in the first place. Having hidden cameras on the other hand does NOTHING to stop you speeding, killing a bus of nuns (good thing) and getting a ticket in the mail the following month.
By the same token, it would seem to me (and maybe you) that having a device that warns of speed traps causes people to SLOW DOWN...the alleged goal. They would argue that hidden cameras/non-detected radar traps causes you to just never speed at all.

clutch-monkey
Post #26

true, but not just that. a radar detector is not stopping the cop from doing what they're doing or impeding their equipment in any way. like i can see a jammer being illegal for interfering with police equipment, but a detector? it's purely passive.

yeh it sucks. no points lost but I now have a criminal record apparently... go figure, its not a traffic infringement but a crime.
