 1982 Toyota Corona X1 (starfire) To 253 Or 308 - ?

Hey everybody, i've got a 1982 corona with the torona starfire engine (shorten 202) with the aussie 4 speed backing it up, the car is in awesome shape and i'm the second owner.


I'm looking to make this car my first project car (its currently my daily) as i'm shipping off to the air force in september this year and would like something to come home to and work on, my ambition would be to have it running and complete for 2013-14 powercruise. This would include the worked 253 or 308, suspension and body work.

How easy would it be to mount a 253 or 308 in the corona seeing as its got the starfire in it?

what would be involved?


would i have to upgrade the box to the supra 5 or just keep the aussie 4?


I know what your thinking "why do up a corona, get something different" the reason is unique.


Any help would be great, and i'll keep this topic open so i can update this project

just run a top loader, the bellhousings to suit a 308 are pretty easy to come by, and they will hold up no problem to a 308..
can i ask why a 253 or 308 though? have you considered a 289/302 windsor? [ equally just as good as a 308, however there is a larger range of parts for a tuff build]

Would use the 253/308 cos it uses the same engine mounts as the 202/starfire so just bolts straight in. If he finds an AUssie/trimatic pattern block it will bolt straight up to the current trans also, so a pretty straightforward conversion as far as that goes.

Haven't really looked down the ford path as i thought being basically a 202 the holden engine would be a much easier to fit?

For a start, the gearbox won't bolt straight up...input shaft is different for V8.

I will be buying the engine with a box anyway as the current one is rather sloppy

a mate had a rona years back that he dropped a worked 202 into which was very straight forward , a 253/308 might fit if the bay is wide enough , even with a 202 my mates car went off its tits third gear burnouts no dramas at all .

Yeah sorry you're right I remembered that when talking to a mate about it later. Still, if you use a V8 aussie 4 speed it'll fit the car without modification, right?

yeah, not a new modification.

if you are in Brissie you can speak to Mick O'Dea. he owns a workshop in Brendale (can't remember the name of it now, possibly prostreet something or other......

he bought a red corona that had a 318 in it for many many years. Used to be parked up all day at the old powernats at lakeside when I was a young bloke, my mum had a corona and I kinda thought it was a pretty cool car.

Mick bought it and later it got a Chev shoved in there and went into the 9's I think.

if you are going to do this as a powercruise car and want to be competetive, don't stuff around with a 253 please. 500hp is a minimum for power levels and thesedays I kinda think that is too low!!! if holden motor, go 355 or whatever you can scrounge out of it. I see a few people getting 383 or 396 out of them these days and use VN heads. this will get you easy into powercruise kind of action.

a Chev motor is a good option also as they are cheaper to screw together than most other engines due to their availability second hand and the amount of aftermarker parts you can get for them.

the Windsor is also a good idea.

record holder for true streetwas a 427 (think) Windsor in a fairlane that ran a 9.7 second pass to claim the title last year so you can get great power out of those things!! and the dizzy is at the front of the engine for ease of tuning.

for me, a smaller V8 (253/308) would not be an option, go for something that is forged bottom end and a screamer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd have to agree with Ash on the small block Chev idea. Easy to get good power out of them, and easily the cheapest engine to build, including the Aussie engines. Also narrower than a 253/308, which may come in handy when squeezing it into the engine bay.

Yeah Chev is always going to be the best option if you want cheap horsepower - especially with our dollar the way it is at the moment - power parts are SO cheap for them from the US!

How would the mod plate go for this? i know each state is different

but shouldnt be too much of an issue?

Consult the mod rules in your state , usually on the relevant state web sites
Theres even ,well on the QLD site a formula you use and they have the maximum LEGAL engine size on there
I highly doubt a 253/308 would be a LEGAL for road use mod in a corona
If its for a weekend skid car , go for your life
