i'm having a crack at making my own RS door cards. looks pretty easy and to hell with paying the ~$200 +shipping online sites want for them.
anyone have any tips when making door cards?

just using thin sheets of light plywood at the moment to see how it works.

yeah im looking at making some up aswell, just dont know where to start. Im pretty sure they use dense cardboard as the backing.

EDIT : I should re phrase that, i dont know how to make the door trims, the backing is cheap enough

You can buy fibreglass doorcard backings off ebay, all holes drilled already, much more sturdy than cardboard.

There you go, not fibreglass, but they are cheap as.

yeah i want something a tough lighter than the usual dense cardboard stuff. on mine the vinyl is just stapled on the rear side after it's folded over.

edit: i'll get a pic tomorrow to give you an idea

i was thinking of making a flat fibreblass trim for my doors, smoothed and painted black. Want to have a "Racing" look.

Most of the time they use MDF as backing for the cards.

Doesn't tolerate water well though

Theres a few books around ,so maybe something online nowadays about doin upholstery
If its just the basic vinyl style look without a pattern pritty easy
If ya want a sewn pattern, go talk to ya mum,get her to do it
Go for a trip to clark rubber , they have the foam ya need for between the door cards and the covering material,or slip down to an upholsterer

If ya got some old street machine mags around, have a flick thru they sometimes have like a how to section , upholstery has been mentioned a bit over the years

Aldi have cheap staple guns, think about $10

cheers. not keen on stapling, might just see how glue works by itself.
uncle is an upholsterer but he is away.. sad.gif

Don't use fibre glass. I have been down that route. IT will rattle against the metal door and drive you insane not matter how well you attach it.

well this it so far:

gotta smooth it out a little but so far so good.
for $30 so far i've got nearly everything except these cloth strap door pulls, any ideas welcome:

So turns out my chrysler which i thought was a 245 hemi is actually a 265 hemi. much difference?

74QEE
Post #1764

20 cubic inches it would appear.

lil_bobby_260
Post #1765

Yeah turns out!
Pretty stoked tho - Its about a 40HP difference, and they are much more responsive to modifications.
Will be getting a cam, extractors and exhaust, 4bbl inlet manifold and 465 holley, and 40thou or so off the head to up compresssion.
Its pretty grunty as it sits now tho - 203HP, and is fun with the 4spd manual.
ALSO - the missus took it for a run and prefers it to the lincoln, which means i get to use the 460/C6 from it for the Galaxie, and the 9" diff from it for the XB, which was the original purpose behind buying the lincoln.
Good times!

Yeah. Which is good- I was going to do it up and sell it, but am stoked she wants it as her cruiser instead of the Lincoln. Now I'm itching for a kingswood or something to complete the ford/Holden/Chrysler trifecta.
And I rent. On 5 acres with a double garage for dailys, a workshop garage for building, and 2 machinery sheds for storage and long term projects. The owners used to be builders, and had a few trucks they used to keep here. Even has ramps I can drive a car onto and stand underneath. Very handy.

Thats awesome man, id kill for a property like that, im about to apply for a home loan so i can build cars and do what i want without landlords getting shitty about half finished cars laying around.

Ill have a Hj prem shell up for sale soon, morpheus purple, all complete minus motor and box. It would complete your hat trick of manufactuers.

And its a pretty girly colour so your mrs might want this one haha, check it out if you want, theres pics in my build thread, its on steelies with centrecaps now, i sold the hotwires.

Nathan will definitely win haha.

I have some more good news, picked up a vintage Ford oil pressure gauge from Victoria for $10, and a full set of V8 Mercury hubcaps for $30 from the same guy. Yay for combined shipping!

Also through a Hot Rod mate have got my hands on a pedal assembly from a '46 - '48 Ford that suits Juice brakes. Brake and clutch pedal, plus the pushrods and original chassis bracket for $50. They go for well over $100 in the US and will be considerably easier to mount and make work than the original LHD Model A pedals i have. Score!

Also picking up my steering column ('42 through '48 Ford) on Monday or Tuesday arvo, and may have cut a deal on a '40 Ford steering wheel, column and box for $50. The steering wheel would be a cool wall hanger as i want to use my '42 Deluxe wheel.. and gives me options of which column will suit more.

Aaaannddd have a lead on a full set of '48 Merc steelies. I have two steelies from a '49 Merc and unfortunately the original owner has moved to Nambour so my Hot Rod mate is waiting on hearing back from him about a job he did for him to find out on the other two wheels.

Slowly narrowing that list of elusive original Ford parts.

Hahaha I am actually buying things. Have scored a second '32 Ford (original) tail light for $20 and also on my way to scoring a set of headlights from a '34 Coupe on the HAMB (not actual '34 lights, but I like that it has a Hot Rod history..) for a whopping $40.
