Righto then,
Its a toy, based on a vintage ford style body , with a later chassis and late straight six !!!

So its not a hot rod, then either

I get so fukn pissed of with people who claim there HOT ROD (pre 48)
Has a new glass body, new chassis, injected 8, 4 speed autos,4 wheels discs
It aint pre 48, so its not a HOT ROD either !!!

No such thing as a good Hot Rod with a 6 cylinder either..

Reason is that as you said, not enough room in the engine "bay" of them, unless you have a stupidly long out of proportion front or you recess the firewall and have a third of the engine in where your feet go, and if you've ever been in a Model A / 32 you'll know theres fuck all room in there as it is.

hi mate how the fuck do people think thay are hot rods just build it the you want i would it great being different so fuck them all. i wounld put a straight 12 in

Your right, aint much room inside them
Dont want to recess the firewall to much
But then dont want the wheelbase too long either
Goin the eight is to easy

Step outside the square, build something different

And yes 6 cylinder hot rods, whatever you wanna call them ,were a popular thing many years ago

These are real hot rods.

And i bet you think all your cars look awesome? Everyone has different tastes. The ones you posted look like every other rod thats been built. Being different is what makes some of em so deadly.

And i think you missed the "6 Cylinder" part.

DeadSled
Post #14

I certainly didn't miss the 6 cylinder part. Real hot rods have never been built with straight sixes. They were originally hopped up four bangers in the 30s and into the 40s, while some guys started using the flathead v8 instead and then onto the early chevy v8's and yblocks.

If you want a Hot Rod that is timeless, and that will be completely authentic then you build it like they used to. If you want to cobble together a 202, a HR front end with a torana steering rack, a hilux diff and a rodeo or hilux chassis or whatever other shitheaps you can come up with you aren't going to have a "Hot Rod" you'll just have a cobbled up shitheap because you can't be assed taking the time to source authentic parts.

So its ok to use newer and more powerfull engines, but not other parts? Doesn't make sense. I've seen plenty of "Hotrods" win massive awards in the states and here with some of the stuff you've mentioned.

You are into street machine stuff Anchor.. you simply wouldn't understand the concept of traditional Hot Rodding.

I've tried explaining traditional customs to Nathan and i had no luck with that either laugh.gif

heres a pic off a track t style Attached Image

now what cowl do you have? also chassis i have a mate who built a roadster pickup out off 28 dodge and he used a 202 to keep things cheep.
i dont care what anyone say's about what motor goes in what type off rod due to the fact that the end off the day its your car not there's.

before you commit to building the rod have a chat to someone who actualy knows on what needs to be done chassis rego wise

OK,
Lets look at
Goin the authentic way for a sec

What decade would we look at ???
40s-50s, there were no fukn big blocks, hemis,or ohv v8 (late 50s yeah not early 50s)
IF ya want a real dyed in the wool 100 % authentic hot rod, for a better word
Youll buy real steel , no fukn fibreglass
Ford didnt have juice (hydraulic brakes) till the late 30s
Most build and used whatever was avaliable to there disposal at the time
Again 40s-50s-60s, 32/34 fords were a dime a dozen, much like commondores nowadays

To say that a real hot rod never had a 6 ???

I think youll find authentic models "A" or "T" fords never had V8s either
The 32 ford was the first with the V8
So anything pre 32 is not authentic unless its a four banger

Nick,
I know what your saying,
But unless your model "A" is authentic to the letter, itll be just a modified car

Wether ill choose to get full rego,or not
Itll certainly be different than the normal
"Authentic" glass bodied, 350/350/9" combos out there

Lol at real hotrods only having 8's in them.

I think too many people confuse themselves with a "traditional rod" over what a "hot rod" is.

Build it the way you want, those that can't see past their own interpretation, need to pull their head out their ass...........

Plenty of cool old six's around and despite DeadSleds opinion of what a hot rod should run, they used to use the old Flatty's, 194's, 250, 292/6's etc back in the day before 8's were popular.

Here's some inspiration NMH - It's a blown 235:

Real hotrodders back in the day were doing things to be a little different and to go fast...... and on a very tight budget and mostly their own work. I dont think sitting on EBay for original parts makes you the Hotrod police...... i bet if those original hotrodders could who knows what they would have been putting in them these days.... hell probably even twin turbo v6's. Build what makes you happy cos no matter what you build there will still be haters. May as well make yourself happy and f the rest. I think a 6 hotrod is cool, but that just my opinion

theres so many different interpretations of what a hot rod actually is, so theres no point arguing about
personally i like the idea of a straight six open front rod, they look cool but in saying that ide rather have a v8
check out a rod called the red baron, its a straight six

I appreciate you giving me thought out replies. If you ever decide to go the Model A route i can definitely help you.

What decade is really up to you, but building a traditional or authentic hot rod is based on what era you decide to go for. I'm going for a late 40s californian car, so mine will be period correct down to the smallest parts. I'm incredibly fussy about this aspect of it.

Because my car will be of late 40's era, it will have juice brakes, it will have a hopped up banger, with the original crash box and banjo diff and it will be all steel. Fibreglass is horrible in my opinion, i will have nothing less than the real deal. My old man is going to the states at the end of the year, and i'm kind of thinking of saving and getting him to bring me back some original panels if i can find them, or reproduction steel panels as well as a bunch of other stuff because the dollar is so good.

As far as what you said about the banger being the only authentic motor for a Model A, thats sort of right but not quite. If you were to build a 40's styled Model A (keeping in mind that back in the 40s and 50s Coupes were not as popular as Roadsters because of less weight, more aerodynamic for salt flats racing ect) a flathead V8 would be authentic in a Model A with either 32 rails or a Model A chassis. Guys were swapping the V8's into Model A frames in the late 30s and early 40s.

The banger would be authentic if you were doing a restoration on a Model A, but not a 40s era Hot Rod. Yes, i'm quite aware of the fact that a 32 had the first V8, although they had four bangers in 33 and 34 also mind you.

I do know of this car. I frankly (no offence seeing as its your inspiration) find it to be a bit of an abortion. Holden front ends on a fenderless car are so god damn ugly, especially when you can buy a model a axle spindles and transverse spring for like $200 or something, which is $300 odd cheaper than the holden front! Infact, you could probably buy a complete Model A front end, and restore it with all new bushes and parts cheaper than the Holden front end.

For what its worth i traded for most of my parts or sourced them through Hot Rodder mates of mine. I've got almost everything bar the rear quarters to have a completely finished Model A for i think it owes me $2500 at the moment. By the time i'm done it'll be around the 4 - 5 grand mark. Try building a Hot Rod with thrown together parts for that, that actually looks good.

I must agree. Even back in the 40s and 50s guys hated having primered cars and only used primer until they could afford to paint it.

Rat Rods are rusty shitboxes with missing floors, rust holes, crap birdshit welds and terrible proportions.
