well then i guess that the rb 25 det into rb25 de skyline we did recnently didnt need one either, altough qld transport maryborough said it did. LOL at trusting staff at QLD Transport for a knowledgeable answer. You aren't understanding the code of practice properly. Which is understandable with the QCOP since it's as old as the dead sea scrolls. If the engine is a factory option for a particular model of car then it doesn't require a mod plate (e.g. RB30ET swap in a VL). But turbo'ing a naturally aspirated engine (RB30E+T) does require the mod plate. This is the correct info you should have been given. A +T conversion is what caused you grief where a genuine RB30ET engine would have been a factory engine swap. The reason the +t conversion is so heavily scrutinised is to ensure exhaust emissions and other safety features are retained etc. The retards that work in QT customer service offices wouldn't know the difference between a drive shaft and a suspension strut. Try booking a meeting with a transport inspector (the guys in the utes with purple lights) and discuss it with them. I think you'll find that everyone else here know's what they're on about. THIS |

The answer (Other learned boosters will agree) is that it is not P-Plate legal. The engine must be model specific. In this case the VB Commodore. Considering this model only came with an inline six cylinder, the V6 is obviously not included. It has to be model and chassis specific. Can't just through any old commodore engine under 200kw ind dri and drive off. And the v8. |

As far as I know its a grey area, similar to the 4age 20v in the ae82 etc. Its the same block but a different head, so is it not a engine conversion and just a head conversion? I'm curious to know on that one what the go is as well, as I am about to do that exact conversion, and I'm getting so much conflicting advice Both are a 1.6L 4A Block, but the heads are different and the 20v head was never offered in the AE82. Whilst I dont mean to hijack the thread, some qualified info would be appreciated (Part of me just thinks - just plate it... it saves the drama of needing to try explain to any given officer who might not be completely abreast of the finer points of the legislation why it is legal (if thats the case)... many will just issue the TIN anyways and rely on the fact that you wont have the time or inclination to defend it, and lets face it that'd probably end up being more expensive than the blue-plate at the end of it all anyways) |

Yes it would be much easier, cheaper and better. Never really understood why someone would buy a car they cant legally drive and then go to the effort + expensive of converting it back to something it originally came standard with. EDIT: was the 2jz soarer that one on ebay a few weeks back at Capabala? If so it was very cheap. yes it was. just needed a really good tidy up. got it for 3500 |

To be legit, you would need to use the 16v ecu / emissions gear and an RPM switch for the VVT to get away with it not requiring a mod plate. This is because the ecu that is native to the 20v was not an option on that model. Thus would require the LA4 code due to the change in emissions control. Chances of being picked on it a slim to none. |

Do I know you ????????? haha i love it when ppl get done by that Anyway.. talking about mod plates etc. When i did my car i got the ones done for engine conversion and turbo conversion. Engineers said i didn't need one for different seats/rails as they went ontop of the stock supports that bolted to the chassis. When i went to get it road worthied. The guy says i need mod plates for an exhaust.. racepak dash..steering wheel and the bullshit kept flying. I asked him to show me where it says i have to do that and of course he couldn't find it. Ended up getting one of the mobile rd worthy guys to do it. Point being.. it seems there's just way too many ppl that are meant to certify cars that don't even know the laws. Although i am interested to find out what the deal is with putting an aftermarket steering wheel on. As far as i know it just has to be adr approved, or if the car had airbags it needs a mod plate for it. Many lols at the guy arguing with legislation :/ approval is what a mod plate is.. meaning the mod is approved prior to you getting your car road worthy and registered. |

All aftermarket steering wheels must be ADR approved, and mustn't be smaller then 297mm. Any car fitted with an airbag, cant be replaced, unless its with another steering wheel with an airbag. Cant be reflective, and must have a button for a horn. Also, Just because you have a mod plate, doesn't mean its legal. A mod plate isn't approval, its basically a plate that says an engineer has gone over the mods, and they have been deemed safe, and done correctly. You could have a mod plate for a TT LS1 in an S13, doesn't mean its legal. As far as I'm aware, any changes to the seats, rails, or the way they are mounted must be mod plated. |

I have the premium isotta wheel which is ADR and has a horn so that's sweet. Yeah i thought the airbag was either you needed a mod plate or couldn't do it. I thought that was the go with seats as well, but the thing that needs to be modded is actually how they're connected to the chassis apparently. My seats attached to the rails slid in the same railing as the stock, so the engineers (actually checked with two) said it was fine. That's what they said anyway. |

so all those p plate civic drivers that had a b16/b18 change are illegal drivers Well for one, when has a B18 EVER been a factory option in a Civic? lol B16 is only legal in a EK, any ED or EG(excluding the imported EG SiR) is illegal |
