Resetting Sr20det Computer - can anyone help??

Hey guys in having trouble with my silvia.

It has an s14 sr20det running standard computer and im having some problems with it.

Ive been told i need to reset the computer but am having trouble doing so...

Ive tried disconnecting the battery and computer and left it for about 20hrs but it didnt change anything.

CAN ANYONE PLEASE HELP??

Pull off cover to see ECU
turn accessories on
Turn screw clock wise all the way
wait a sec
turn back the other way
wait a sec
turn screw all the way back the other way
wait a sec
turn it back
turn accessories off
start car

hey mate just took the cover off my ECU but couldnt find a screw.
ill post some pics up of the ECU

Dude, I didn't mean that cover. I meant the plastic kick panel that protects the ECU. The screw I'm talking about is in the second picture and should have been next to the LED.... But. Its missing.

WTF?

I thought resetting the ecu was as simple as disconnecting the power from the car for long enough although this might only be a soft reset of sorts

the screw rancher is refering to is early ecu's,
there is no memory in a s14 ecu, as soon as you disconnect the power to it, it looses all logged codes, fuel trims etc.
but then again, i don't exactly know what you are trying to accomplish. resetting a ecu doesn't magically fix things head_wall.gif

is the engine a s14 engine or s13?

ok ill give it a go.
basically i want to reset it because the car doesnt want to idle properly and starts splatterin over 2000rpm so ive checked all my cooler pipes and they all seemed ok then i checked my AFM and the pipe its connected to had come offf the front of my turbo so ive been told it might be playing up because the ECU might need resetting.

any thoughts??

its alomost like a 'boost cut' but wen i release the throttle i can still hear the flutter from the turbo.
it happened the other night just after i got up it...

Not going over 2400rpm in an SR20DET is a faulty AFM.

Engine not going over 3000rpm is ECU "safe mode".

When you said you checked the AFM - checked what? The connection? Or the actual voltage it's reporting?

Sounds like to me you have AFM sensor issues.

well i checked it by having the car idling and then disconnecting the AFM and seeing if anything changed and when i removed it it just stalled.
so u think it may be faulty?? whats the best way of checkin it??

once ive reset the ecu is there anythin in particular i should do when i start the car?

Reseting the ecu is a straight forward process. Most disconnect the batter then press the brake pedal to deplete in remaining energy.

I dare say if you disconnected the batter for 20 hours, your ecu HAS been reset. Resetting the ecu isn't a magical fix for you though, in most cases, you WONT feel any difference between an ecu which has 'self corrected' and a reset/fresh ecu.

Same thing happened with my SR awhile back, definatly sounds like its your AFM.

Make sure all the pins are connecting properly and if no love just get a new AFM.

ill get a new AFM this week and try that hopefully that fixesit.

is there a way of testing if my AFM is faulty??

After the engine is warmed up, at idle the sensor should read 0.8 - 1.5v.
At 3000rpm it should read between 1.4 - 2.0v

Fail-safe Mode

Detected items: Mass air flow sensor circuit
Engine operating condition in fail-safe mode: Engine speed will not rise more than 2,400 rpm due to the fuel cut.

thanx very much 4 your help mate.

but how do i measure the volts??

also, just before 2400rpm it does hesitate like theres a fuel cut...

You need to use a voltmeter to measure the power.
You can pick them up fairly cheaply from Supercheap Auto, Bunnings, JayCar or Dick Smith.

They're handy to have because you will use it more than once.
