getting springs made up will obviously be better for racing purposes than any NORMAL off the shelf spring as they are only made for everyday driving and specifically to lower the vehicle, this sort of thing needs to be sorted out now before other people go out and do the same thing and then a big shit fight will start..they are not classed as readily available as someone cant just walk into repco, global, or any other normal parts shop and ask for a set or rockhampton specials, IMO, jeff we need a list of springs and struts that are legal...

Yes Jeff these issues need to be addressed. However, in regard to what constitutes a shelf item these springs can be obtained by anyone from the supplier Part Numbers are C95-610 front, c95-611 rear.

Struts - I "assumed" that as everybody was keeping the std struts, is this not the case ?
anything not stated in the rules as an approved modification is not permitted, so currently only excel struts are allowed.
If you guys want to run alternative struts I'll have to have a look at it.
You MUST use the standard brakes, so bear that in mind.

Ralph,
Can you send me the spec's and pricing on the springs ?

We already have the "Track Attack" approved spring pack that I have put together
So I dont have a problem approving other spring packs if they conform to the general theme of the class.
Readily available and not overly expensive.
I'll let you know when I have the details.

Cheers Jeff

Yes Jeff price on coil from Dobinsons Spring and Suspension, Rockhampton was $84.61 per coil, part numbers are C95-610 front and C95-611 rear. These are a shelf item available through out-lets on request.

Another area of consideration is to bear in mind, us from out of Brisbane, do not have Repco, Pedders, Fulcrum or Burnsons stores on every corner, so one has to consider freight charges and delivery times when we buy a product. My struts are direct replacement KYB $132.23 per strut. Given the new spring fits the direct replacement strut seat and uses factory Hyundai top plate, my package is consistent with the rules.

Should some of the people making comments on this subject prefer that you nominate a supplier or a control spring/strut package i will order 5 sets immediately, but i will not pay freight if such items are only available in Brisbane simply because the majority of car owners live in Brisbane.

I don't think that is the issue Ralph it is more people being worried that other people are going to go out to someone and go hey make me a set of springs and can you make them a shelf item. It kind of defeats the original intent of the rule. I think from future it would be best to have to seek pre-approval from Jeff with regards to having something done like you have through Dobsons

As far as I care, if you live in Rocky, you can walk into and get some then thats fine

At the end of the day its just a coil spring just not from one of your mainstream manufacturers - as stated bushwhack towns dont have a massive choice of suppliers. Its a standard coil type spring that anyone can ring up and buy! That should be alll that matters!

I am sure there are cars running a cut spring - that is not a readily available off the shelf product!!!

I will be interested to see how many are NOT running standard or replacement dash, doortrims etc... and therefore not complying with class rules - videos on youtube show the series leaders car running no dash!

Hey Phil,
on the topic of this, the rule for keeping the standard dash came about after a few of the entrants were removing them and had been raised by QLD Raceways mgmt of a safety issue.

that is why you see some 'older' videos of some cars running without replacement or standard dashes.

my impression is that anyone without this dash as a minimum safety regulation would not pass scrutineering for the entry

RE - Mounfield Racing Spring Pack
I went through this with Ralph today and they sound like std lowered springs.
I didn't get a chance to phone the manufacturer to check the rates, ran out of time.......
I don't see a problem with them at this stage if anybody wants to run them.

Our first Springs from our "Track Attack Spring Pack" arrived today.
They look good ;)
I'll have some to deliver to someone at Lakeside on Sunday, so if you want to have a look grab me in the morning.

I also have 1 spare rear swaybar in stock if anybody needs one,
they are becoming a little rare at the moment.

Cheers Jeff

Hey Jeff,

What about in the near future having a get together with current drivers and new people wanting to come in the class?
Maybe that way we can discuss and throw up new discussion areas about promoting this style of racing?

just a thought,

Awkward to give an accurate spring rate for the following reason.

The term progressive means it depends on what load is on the spring at a specified time or weight transfer in our case. As you would appreciate, progressive rate springs, like any non progressive spring, are measured in lbs per inch of compression. Naturally the term progressive means they have more restriction the more they are compressed or loaded. For the uneducated a conical coil as fitted to any late model Excel (170mm base-120mm top)has a progressive rate simply through the increasing dia of the coil windings. Early models did not use conical rear coils and as such were not progressive rate. Maybe we can do some technical scientific testing and maybe it will show my coils are the only fully compliant replacement ones being used in a factory conical model. Maybe they will prove to be crap and I too will try another brand. Sunday will be the test.

From an outsider's perspective springs should be free, visually it would be virtually impossible to tell anyway. Dampers? Anything that will fit inside the stock strut? ARB's, free? This all gives some freedom for tuning and experimentation without involving big $.

My personal view is that any spring that utilise stock Hyundai spring top cap and bottom strut seat, should be allowed. Struts are sealed from factory and therefore no modification to allow for inserts should be permitted.

We can probably organise a breakfast or lunch at the restaurant at Lakeside with a bit of a track cruise afterwards if there are enough people interested

Maybe even do some Excel Only training on the DTC the same day if we get a few who are keen.
I was talking to JT about this yesterday, will advise when more info is at hand.

Re Springs -
I'm not keen to change the rules for this year as people have been working to the established rules.
I dont think that many of the guys who are currently running would have bought anything different than the std lowered kings or pedders that they are currently running as most of them are new to circuit sprints/racing and nobody really knows what the excel's will like as far as poundage / stiffness goes, especially bearing in mind that we are running a road tyre that will only tolerate a certain amount of stiffness due to the limited grip available.

We can look at options for next year if there is a consensus.
Springs could be free or we could have a spring pack that everybody uses. (que huge debate)

I am keen to keep standard/unmodified replacement struts & spring perches (as long as they are up to the task) to try to keep a control on costs. So far the cheap replacements seem to be holding up Ok, so we will see how we go.

Most of the future rule changes will be for safety or if we find that a certain part isnt holding up we might need to allow changes to make things easier. I am really keen to keep build costs down which means not allowing many more freedoms than we currently allow.

I am keen to see the circuit racing expand, I think that we might be able to have Excel only days of combined sprinting and circuit racing in the one day, That would be enormous !

Another thing that we can look at next year is tyres
We can either go to a cheaper control tyre (say $60 each) or we could allow a grippier tyre.
If we find that the current road tyres are not providing enough grip and its making racing dangerous we may need to look at changing the tyre that we are using for circuit racing. The roadies seem to be OK for the sprints, but the cars may move around too much for close racing.

The whole series is in a kind of a development stage at the moment, so some tweaking may still be required.
cheers Jeff

With all the debating about what can and can't be added or run on the cars maybe the time for 2 classes of Excels is getting closer. I seem to recall there was the idea of Stock and Mod spoken about before. How about the current rules are those for Stock, and nothing gets changed, except for the control tyre ($60 tyre) Jeff has mentioned, and the Mod class can do whatever they like except for engine mods.

The Mod class will be able to run whatever suspension, brake, tyre and wheel choice they want and spend as much as they want to get their car to go fast.

Those in Stock class run to the current rules and no moaning and groaning about the rules. If they do then welcome to the Mod class.

Just my 2 cents worth!!

But not coil overs or adjustable suspension. And the mods permitted to the suspension are limited to springs only, and to be pedantic the springs must be available from more than 1 outlet (the word outletS is used meaning multiple).

Dont stress about the springs, as I said before its all developmental at the moment so lets see what works best before we make any decisions.

Tomorrow is looking huge 90+ cars on track and 90+ cars in the show.

The guys who write out the insurance will again be taking special note of how our group of Excels behaves, so if we could all be on our best behavior and keep spread out on the track and all follow the rules things will go smoothly for us.

anyway i'm off to load the car trailer, see you all tomorrow ;)

If the 'Stock' class is what is currently permitted then maybe... but to be honest I don't really think a mod class is necessary.

I don't think these cars need to be made dramatically faster, all the queries so far have largely been due to misunderstandings about what is permitted. Once things are well known and clear there shouldn't be too much of an issue, other than the usual desire of some individuals to be competitive. Let's face it, we all want to be competitive and some of us will look for that advantage a little harder than others.

Not sure what you mean, Nick who crashed his excel today had never crashed there before.
If you mean excels in general than one went over on it's roof a couple of week ago in a low speed roll (turning in the gravel trap)
Cars that push past their limits hit the walls, all cars not just Excels.
An Evo when in the wall in group 1 today on the first lap, group 1 being the faster and most experienced drivers so this happen to everyone not just the excels.
