We could go on forever about this stuff. At the end of the day, make it safe, have heaps of fun, don't get caught up in laptimes (because the cheque book nearly always wins), and whatever you do don't take it too seriously.

Big edit to avoid dribble :P

Neither is adding a pod and stripping out the interiors anyway, and roll cages?????

Sounds to me like most of the current cars don't meet the essence of the original idea.

Without looking at the ARDs I can't comment on the removel of the dash but there are a few cars that just don't have a dash just an instrument cluster.

it's illegal to remove the dash. stripped is fine, just no sharp edges. cage is legal if bolt in, or welded with backing plates bolted in. ours is being mod plated as we speak :P

@marlin, come grab a shitter and join in :P We got our complete TCO spreadsheet if u wanna have a look at it.
(and I liked your idea, basically what me and 2 other mates have done with this) when the time comes we'll look at running another car

I've already got too many cars mate! Maybe once one goes I'll replace it with another :P
Besides, gotta let someone else bask in some glory for a change :P :P lol :P

Sorted. Next question, how does one go about getting a car rally/conditional registration?

Queensland Hyundai Parts is offering 20% discount on all used parts,
so replacement dashes might not be that expensive.

What do you reckon about these Toyo's
available in a 195 and a 205 x 50 x 15

Who would like to use these if i can negotiate a good price ?

Toyo Australia introduces the PROXES R1R, an Ultra High Performance flagship tyre for extreme performance. The Proxes R1R provides maximum traction in both wet and dry weather for car enthusiasts who desire ultimate performance.

Featuring an aggressive arrowhead tread pattern that not only looks good, it is also excellent for water drainage and wet performance.

The Proxes R1R’s extra wide footprint, low profile design and increase in the contact patch area delivers both superior handling and a clean and stunning look. Utilising Toyo’s cutting edge computer design technology (T-Mode), the Proxes R1R is designed to provide exceptional grip. The Proxes R1R also features a rim protector on the sidewall to keep “bling” wheels from unwanted curb damages

Trust me you wont be able to get it, you need close to the highest rally licence, it was abused years ago and now made so hard its not worth it.

The Wholesaler is talking to Toyo to see what can be worked out.
They look like a top quality road tyre, lets hope the price is OK.

for 15" wheels I am going to look at buying a set of Silvia wheels
If I can make it work I have a supply of them available.

If your car is Aust complied I would say definately not worth it mate.
I've been down that road and I can tell you it will cost about $1000 per year in permits to maintain it, PLUS you have to prove you have competed (annually) in a high end CAMS affiliated event and maintain a minimum of CAMS National Rally level. Also be prepared to explain yourself at length every time you get dobbed in and pulled over for having "Forklift" plates on your car, yes, the same plates for both fork and cars :P
Prob best to do what I did with my Skyline, and spend a few hundred on getting everything you can mod plated.

Back to the dash issue,
I spoke to Chuck at Qld Hyundai parts today and Dashes suitable for race cars are $50.00
so its not a big dollar issue to replace your dash if your was damaged or accidentally chucked out.

at least jeff and i know what power ours make :P

I think the Proxies R1R will be too soft for the budget racer, I got quoted today the T1R $145 or for the KU36 $95 in a 195/50/15

I think the Kumho will be the best value for money

I thought the Khumo was $150 ?
sounds cheap, where are they coming from ?

brendo12
Post #686

why dont we all run the same tire??maybe not right now because of people tht may have just recently bought a new set but next season or something? that is going to be the fairest way of doing it...work out this season what the best "value for money" tire, if you would like to call it actually is, try and get a good deal on it and keep everyone even and happy??

i am getting front pads made by qfm, ill see how they go and if theyre a good thing theyre also very cheap....so in the future maybe everyone could use the same pad? ($65) for their racing material...3-4 week wait though..

also late model honda rims are 4x114.3 and with a 6mm spacer do the trick, should be alot of them around (prelude, accord)

i have been quoted 220 also for an 18mm rear swaybar through performance suspension on the coast...maybe slightly cheaper..

i think keeping both door cards and the dash panel is a sensible idea...otherwise it starts looking to bloody serious for such a standard form of racing, (well look like fukwits)

if anyone here on the gold coast wants to check over their car for mechanical and safety issues i am more than willing to let you put it on the hoist at work, just PM me..

If everyone stays sensible about everything, stops whinging about who's spending more than some uni student everyone will have a lot of fun, at the end of the day, WE ARE RACING HYUNDAI EXCELS, not 300000.000 porshes....harden the fuck upand just enjoy it i recon!!!!

also thanks to jeff for answering all my questions ive been having, your doing well sorting out the rules mate!

I think you're being a bit dramatic here mate....as far as I can see one bloke was unhappy about the dash rule but as stated above for $50 that's easily fixed. Most of the other stuff has just been a throw around of ideas and opinions.

If Prelude wheels fit with a spacer as you say though that would be good. Obviously with the centre bored out as well.

yeah thats right big red.....i was just lucky with the set i picked up someone had already played with them..
bak in nz the sports saloon series ran a controlled tire...was a kumho, but they had sponsored the series....just an idea. I havnt even done a sprint yet but just trying to come up with a few ideas that are going to benefit everyone in the long run

trackattack
Post #693

I think that we will eventually end up with a control tyre for the circuit racing,
which will also be the preferred tyre for sprinting,
with the possibility of a few other approved road tyres for sprinting to allow some flexibility for the new guys
plus an amnesty on running other tyres for the new cars to allow them track time to learn about the cars and circuits.

I was offered an extremely good deal on semi slicks,
but you guys said the ongoing cost of a full semi slick wasnt where you wanted to go.

I still think a very high level road tyre like the Toyo Proxes R1R will work well for us and keep the costs down on consumables.

I was the one questioning the dash rule as I was under the impression that the dash could be removed as I had seen a few at LS without the dash. Mine was stuffed so I threw it out, and now it seem I need to replace it. :P

Jeff do you know if this price applies to X2 dash's as well? If so, problem solved :P

not sure, phone Chuck and ask him 07 5491 6897 or 0411565174
he is very keen to look after the guys who are racing the Excels
he has a commodore that he runs at the sprints at Lakeside.

well if youre going to be doing that, better make a decision then, because i have just bought some 15" rims and will be getting some good tyres for them soon. dont want to have to change them because they are not the correct control tyre...that is unnecessary expenditure
