The late build X3's (11/97-6/00) have a G4FK DOHC engine which produces 74kW stock. The SOHC 8/94-10/97 G4EK produces 66kW. A good one could be as high as 85Hp ATWs when they were newer, with a full exhaust (given that included extractors) and intake. The rules do state you can recondition them too. Its just my opinion that 75hp is too low before you penalise (or disqaulify) someone for having found a good Twincam in top shape.

Front bar on an X3 is 22mm and is hollow.

The R888's are expensive 250-300ea for that size depending on where you buy them.
Closer to 200ea for the 13" ones though.

This is the CAI on mine then add a decent exhaust. I've seen one dyno'd at 64kW atw's with CAI, Exhaust + Extractors and over 100k in the clock.

You can also use any of the 4x114.3 Mitsubishi rims but be aware that the offset may be wrong requiring spacers. Luckily they also come with lug nuts meaning a longer thread area so spacers should be fine. I picked up a set of 15 inch Mitsi rims with tyres for $30 so they are out there, just need to look for them, and be patient.

I might have a Sabelt 3" 4 point harness available, anyone interested.

We at Real Dyno Performance have dyno'd 7 Excels that race in this series so far and 70.6 hp at the tyres has been the best so far and that was fron the fastest Excel circulating at the moment.

Has anybody found a supply of swaybars, I am told that whiteline no longer make them.
We might have to modify the swaybar rules to make them easier to get

HORSEPOWER
Dont get hung up on horsepower, The Excels will benefit more from handling upgrades and good lines.
Lakeside is not a horsepower track and thats where most of you guys seem to want to run.

TYRES
Haven't found a deal that suits as far as treadwear & tyre size and most importantly price goes, will keep looking.
Does anybody have any feedback about the tyres they are running.
has anybody achieved more than 3.0 deg neg camber running a 205 tyre ?

pedders make swaybars to suit.. mate of mine had one made for his hilux and it was only $50ish more then an off teh shelf item from memory

Its a fine line between letting them modify the cars enough to keep most of them happy, but still controlling the costs.
most of the mods they are allowed to do are a once only buy such as springs, swaybars and wheels.

only consumables are tyres which are high end street tyres which should last for ages.
engines should be long lasting as they are not allowed to be modified

Most of the guys found that by simply running a good tyre they picked up about 4 seconds around lakeside.
Fastest Excel in class at the moment is 67.89 :cool:

But why run a "good" tyre mate? Run a shit tyre and save the pennies. As long as everyone is on the same thing it doesn't matter. Noone races an Excel to be fast in an outright sense, so who cares if they're doing 68's or 72's?
If anything I think the slower the better considering how unsafe most of them look inside. Personally I think some safety consciousness needs to creep in soon, can you imagine the carnage some of these dash-less monsters would do to one's arms and legs in a wall altercation, or heaven forbid, a roll? Even a light one?
I'm really not trying to sound like a dazza downer, but I'd hate for something to happen and jeapordise the venue or the "series".

Having run on hard tyres I can see that they would be dangerous in inexperienced hands for circuit racing as the back of the car moves around a fair bit.
The good tyres aren't exactly top shelf, we are talking achilles and KU36, $150 each and will still last for ages

Currently QR polices the safety aspect and I cant control what actually runs at the track.
The class rules are currently to keep the front door trims and dash, but strip the rest out.

and yes I believe that a roll cage is a must, mine comes back tomorrow :)

Really? There was heaps of guys without dashes, and our door cards are rooted and were flapping in the breeze so they've gone too.

We can probably allow suitable replacements.
If we dont voluntarily maintain a suitable level of safety the guys at QR will get onto it.
Try to go circuit racing without a dash and front door cards and I doubt you would pass scrutineering.

Yeah I was only judging by what I saw mate, no dashes or door cards with very angry bracketry sticking out trying to kill you! Dashes and door cards weigh bugger all. And by not removing them you're wasting less time on the thing.

I got my X2 without a "safe" dash (it was all broken up by a mad woman with a hammer!!!!!), just the instrument cluster. Does this exclude me or could I fab an aluminium replacements of some sort that would remove the sharp edges etc and put padding over the rest? I have already removed all the mounting brackets and relocated sharp objects that were mounted on the the bar behind the dash, too me fricken ages to work with all the wiring!!!!!

Alot of the saloon car guys just use the top half of the dash, and fab door cards.
Jeff fab dash and door cards should be fine and stick with the tyre rule you've got now for sprints and racing.

Yeah replacements for dash and door trims are fine, the main issue is safety.
I have just amended the rules to include suitable safe replacements.

I wouldn't be surprised to see QR start to have a look over the cars now that there are so many out there.
So have a look at what you have and make sure that no sharp bits can jab you.
I was talking to someone who recently rolled a car at high speed with only a normal seatbelt and they ended up lying across the passenger seat.

thats crap cause now i have to buy a new dash cause as with most excels mine was so sun damaged that i had a big hole in it and when i started to pull the dash out it fell apart,its startin to get abit more than cheap racing with all these changes so me and three of my mates that are getin cars ready for the next raceday are thinkin of maybe not bothering and scrappin our cars

nothing has actually changed for ages. :)

we have had a discussion about a possible tyre deal, but nothing has changed in the rules. (and wont change unless it means cheap tyres)
We have discussed a safety issue regarding the cockpit immediately surrounding the driver and hi-lighted a potential problem that the drivers need to be aware of.

If your really keen to have no dash and no door cards, get the QR guys to sign off on it and I wont question it.

That youtube vid was good. You guys sure are doing it on the cheap, if it was a cams event you'd be up for atleast another 2-3k in safety equipment alone. I can't believe you dont require a cage or harness.

Min requirements for racing is double layer fire proof suit, fire proof boots, cotton underware and socks, level 3 licence which requires an observed driving test at a sanctioned race track, fixed back seat, min 4 point harness, min 4 point cage, foam filled fuel tank or fuel cell, log booked car...and the list goes on.

They are supposed to be sprinting, not racing, which is why they get away with normal road car requirements.
The officials had a couple of words at the last meeting about overtaking (which is not permitted on corners) to avoid what happened in that video.

When they upgrade to circuit racing then need roll cage and race suit etc.
That being said, I personally recommend a roll cage in any car used for competition.

Drivers door card is a good idea, put the time in and get rid of all the sharp edges, brackets ect. around the dash area and put so foam on the cross bar, that should keep the powers to be happy for next to no cost.
Just remember these cars are punching way above their weight and a big accident is just a matter of when. No one wants to see the class scrapped and someone hurt for something as minor as making it a little safer inside.

I have left my door cards in just taken a few handles off as they just get in the way. Seeing that they weight so little and keep all the sharp edges covered I think its a good idea to keep them.

Started building an ally and fibreglass dash to hold the instruments and then will cover the rest with foam padding.

I'm running a full cage and race seat and 5 point harbess so am quite sure i will not be able to get too close to the dash in an accident.

we ran full dash and front door cards for march 14th due to safety. you never know what could happen being thrown around in a car.
we did remove everything behind the front seat but :)
