have to disagree there. some of the "soft roaders" are quite capable in their own right. for the guys that just want to get away on the weekend, and not try to be the best at landcruiser park.

also, unlike pajero's, landcruisers, and the like. they dont get 5km/l.

i see no problem with Forester's, Rav4's (new ones), X5, ML, etc.

granted there are some that will never or at least very rarely even be considered for offroad use. like G-Class, Q7, Toureg, Hummer H3, etc..

At the end of the day, this debate is not going to stop as it's being on going for the past 20+ years including the ban of bullbars.

How on earth are they (being the police) going to police this ? With that amount of 4wd's having them these days. What about the normal road cars with them ie: I've seen taxi's with bullbars/roo bars....

It just wont happen.

Cars like the territory or captiva etc have a purpose and cater for large families... that will not fit in a 5 seater. And vans are ugly so I can see why so many city drivers have them. I have mates in Brisbane who have big 4x4's, but they have them for camping trips etc... They cannot tell us what cars we should be driving.

I see the problem as being sight & awareness...
If you arent looking after dropping apple, pear & suri off then your not going to see poor (cant think of other nouveau names being given to kids these days...) Jerry walking across the street.

Its irrelevant if you drive a city 4wd or a tuff performance pedigree, if your not looking or being aware of your surroundings then you will make contact with someone or something...

I say the issue centers around a lack of concentration... & being 4 foot doesnt assist...

I currently drive a lifted cruiser, spec for towing 3.5t. i have never had a problem & my drive to work passes through at least 1 school zone..
If your aware of your surrounds you wont have a drama...

id like to see a lot of urban cowboys justify the use of bullbars in the city though? know of one particular 4wd thats in my street that NEVER see's off road and has the biggest piece of pig iron bullbar youll ever see. yet people get raped for intercoolers and no front bar? i dont see the logic of all terrain vehicles in urban environments. i just.....dont

This.

I dont care about them using more fuel or more emissions or what ever that argument was, i just hate them being oversized, in the way and overkill in 90% of situations in suburbia.

Problem is, and has been noted by many a 4WDing enthusiast, that 4WD's are the new "bandwagon" for P platers who think nothing about raising their cheap 4WD 8 foot and slamming the biggest tyres possible underneath it and flouting the law. This was mentioned also by a nice police officer I was talking to outside work the other day who mentioned the higher rate of P platers being nailed in 4WD vehicles.

Personally I think its a pretty ridiculous proposition, but one that has been going on for years.

4wd's aren't any more dangerous to road users than other vehicles, it all comes down to the driver.

If you show the car the respect it deserves, then there isn't a problem.

I can't afford two cars, one for driving around town and another for heading up the beach or going camping and I don't see how my 1.5t 4wd should be treated any differently to the 1.5t commodore, or 1.5t awd. In fact as a part-time 4wd, my car is essentially a 2wd wagon when on the bitumen, how can they then tell me its different to a commodore wagon?

The funny thing is though, that I would not actually be able to leave my suburb along any of the main roads due to the location of schools. I would actually have to resort to driving through a whole heap of backstreets just to avoid the school itself, thus endangering kids walking to and from school as backstreets generally don't have footpaths, crossings and traffic lights.

Just my 2 cents, Toyota4x4

I would like to se some restrictions introduced to 4wds. I couldnt give two shits about fuel consumption - thats what the 35 odd centres per litre of tax on fuels is for. What shits me is the amount of times I get cut off by lifted landcruiser utes with "the bundy made me do it" stickers on the back because they dont check their blind spots, they dont even realise it either. If I did get hit I would end up with probably a write off and the landcruiser might have a slightly scuffed tire if hes unlucky, and would probably drive off not realising he hit me.

I havent had any problems so far with mothers in soft roaders, which get decent(ish) economy and have car regulation bumpers, which is pretty much who the 4wd ban would be aimed at which I get makes it pretty pointless.

Only 20000 odd signatures? Why didnt the petition against rego increases get a news article?

4WDs are nothing, who cares about them, they are a part of the queensland lifestyle and have been for generations, so the greenies can fuck off when it comes the environment. I think they should ban trucks from city streets, they are alot more dangerous and always piss me off

Look at it this way - with the height of my 4wd and the tyres - when people cut me off it shits me up the wall, they don't realise what it takes to pull up something so big so quickly. We don't have the same braking system/distance as a normal road car. You cut me off, I'll either high beam or tail gate you until you move and wake up to your self and hurry the fuck up.

I had some idiot cut in front of me last week, clearly saw me coming but still goes on, resulting in me tail gating him as I was picking up speed, he then slams the brakes on to which I had to also.

Ok I'll bite.

Normal 4wd = workhouse/play vehicle.

SUV with RWD/AWD capability that is the same size as a large 4wd = wank factor, good for nothing piece of shit.

I shouldn't have to justify my vehicle at all, thats my point.

BUT when there is a clear problem with x amount of owners of such vehicle (in this case 5 foot mothers driving vehicles too large for their level of driving skills) then obviously something should be done before some one is hurt.

Responsibility in this case not only falls on the law makers but also the producers of such vehicles to provide something safer.

See: Supercar scare of the 70's for similar comparisons.

looks like I misunderstood your point, but I really don't have any problem with soft roaders either. If thats what they want, where's the problem? safety? people die in all sorts of cars all the fucking time. why not ban them all? they're all potentially dangerous weapons! And lets not mention motorcycles! These people just don't know what's good for them. Its high time the Nanny state stepped in to intervene!

or is it only pedestrian safety we're so concerned about? or, more to the point, is it that one schoolkid that got killed by a 4WD in a school carpark a few years back in Sydney that prompted a Coroner to recommend the stunning knee-jerk reaction that 4WD's be banned form several hundred meters from all schools, as if no-one has ever been run over by a normal car???

Sure, a pedestrian vs a 4WD is not a great scenario for the pedestrian, and I'd much rather be run down by a Nerf ball ™, but not many people drive Nerf balls around. So the only real alternative if you took the 4WDs or Soft Roaders (if that's the kind of thing you don't like) out of the equation, is that you'd be hit by a "normal" car. Now, most of these 4WDs around schools are driven by families that need large cars, so its going to be at least a Falcodore wagon, or maybe an Odessy or Tarago or something. What do they weigh? Even Commos are up around 1800kg these days. Is the human body really going to tell the difference between a nice soft friendly Commodore and a Pajero/Disco/Kluger etc? Maybe it will. Maybe you'll get lucky and spend the rest of your life as a vegetable instead of dead. Yay! But even if its a passenger vehicle that hits a little kid in a primary school carpark, they're going under, not up over the bonnet where the passenger strike safety is catered for on modern cars, and the scenario of 1800kg Commodore on top of 30kg kid is not going to be much better than a 2200kg Patrol in reality. They might end up slightly less dead. Sorry if that sounds cold. And this all arises from that one incident??? Where are the stats on pedestrian strikes by evil, polluting, intimidating, 4WDs around schools to justify the hype?

That's not directed personally at you HSV, just a general rant.

btw, I own a GQ 4.2 Patrol used primarily for camping trips. This big heavy full size 4WD with a big arse old school 4.2 engine uses just under 12l/100km around town. I also have a Legnum as a daily driver. Its 2.5l engine uses over 13l/100km around town. Many 4WDs like Discos, Pajeros and the like get around 9l/100km from their deisels around town. Similar if not better than falcodores.

Ironically the recent rego increases have tipped the cost of owning/running/maintaining two vehicles a bit past the point I'm willing to keep spending. So I'm thinking about ditching the Legnum and just using the Patrol everyday. Maybe update to a newer, more comfortable 4WD in the not too distant future. If they offered a cheaper restricted rego for 4WDs to be used for recreational purposes instead of punatively trying to slug us with extra costs to keep them, that would be far more likely to keep my 4WD in the driveway away from shops and schools until the weekend camping or day trips...

Exactly big 4wds dont have the same braking or maneuvrability of cars, coupled with the fact that a 4wd will cause more damage in an accident which makes them more dangerous so why does everyone need them and drive them at the same speeds as cars much more capable on the road. I had some idiot cut in front of me today, it also happened the day before that and the week before that etc.. its just part of driving in Australia I just get temporarily angry at them and get on with it. Tailgating them is a real smart and safe move, what if they decide to brake hard? You would have an accident and its 100% your fault no matter how much you whinge you were only tailgating and highbeaming them because they cut you off.

I couldnt agree more with you there HSV, it has started a new p plate bandwagon/

OT Ive work at indooroopilly shopping centre as car park security, and see not just a 4wd taking risks when finding some where to park, it goes both ways
1 example was a car space where not one but 3 small cars ( echo, barrina & corolla ) atemp to back in to a parking space only to get 3/4 in an decide theres not enough room, then see a 09 patrol backing in a started to laugh. But fact way un like the others that tryed and failed, the driver ( female ) did it first go.

On the other hand ive had owers of large 4wd ( some with roof racks and such ) complain that they couldnt find a space or could not use other levels for parking becasue there 4wd is too high.

Ive been called out to an elderly lady, becasue she couldnt get out with a 4wd park each side of her.

It goes both ways with road use as well it not always your cut off by some one useing a 4wd, how ever it those instances that remain im mind when a topic like this come up for discussion.

At the end of the day im all for people to choose either 4wd or other, I just hope that they can drive it safely.

HSV i can see this thread turning out like the fog lights should be banned thread.

Your argument is horribly flawed and retarded.

I am in the sterotype you so lovely described, bar the bundy sticker and not looking when merging part.

IF you are stupid enough to try to squeeze into a spot which reduces my braking distance and I do hit you, I WILL make sure I do a lot more damage than normal should you happen to brake test me because all of a sudden I'm less than a foot away from you. Ask the lovely lady that done this to me a month ago in peak hour how her boot and surrounding area ended up looking like she had been in a demolition derby. Ask the coppers who attended to the accident (she ran into the car in front) why I wasn't charged when SHE reduced my braking distance and caused an accident due to her irresposible driving.

Or ask the gentleman in the newish Mercedes who crumpled his front guard in when he merged into my bullbar without even looking or indicating.

Hello? I'm 8 foot tall, twice as wide and you STILL didn't see me?

I can guarenfuckingtee you that cars are more responsible for cutting 4WD's off than the other way around, thats for sure.

I'm bemused by the mentality of other passenger vehicle drivers as well, very few people will attempt to cut in front of me, even less will tailgate me or sit on my ass and almost everyone gets out of the right hand lane when you come up behind them. At present I am driving the missus's car to work and boy is that a different fucking story, more like a game of Mario Kart than anything else.

Quite the opposite actually if you bothered to read.

It sums up smaller cars attitude towards bigger cars.

Why should I be held at fault because other drivers attitudes towards vehicles my size are shit?

"Fuck him, he will stop" is a not a acceptable attitude, neither is "he will give way to me because I'm smaller".

IF and thats a damn big IF drivers attitudes were better on the road as a whole, there would be no issue.

Either way it will never be passed so I really couldn't give a fuck to be honest.

Your story makes no sense, in 99.99% of cases if you crash into the back of someone its YOUR fault. You have admitted your car cannot break as well as other smaller cars on the road, so maybe next time you should keep a safe following distance.

Its funny how often you see 4wd owners tailgating people, yet in reality they are the last people who should be since most 4wd owners in this thread have admitted generally its harder to pull up a 2t+ vehicle then a 1t vehicle.....ME HAVE BIG CAR!!

Are you retarded?

It's a serious question by the way, one that I would like with a answer backed with facts.

I WAS leaving a safe following distance SHE jumped into a gap AS I was braking for the car in front for peak hour traffic so SHE was deemed at fault for REDUCING my SAFE BRAKING DISTANCE as CONFIRMED by the POLICE OFFICER who attended the SCENE.

Had she not jumped in at the last second, there would of been no accident whatsoever, I am well aware of my trucks abilities. rolleyes.gif

Seriously do you have small person syndrome because of the size of your car or what?

And to top it off, the fucking word is BRAKE not BREAK.
