ALMOST 20,000 Queenslanders have signed a petition calling for a ban on four-wheel drives in school pick-up zones and shopping areas.

The 19,728-name petition, tabled by the opposition Liberal National Party's transport spokeswoman Fiona Simpson in State Parliament yesterday, also called for higher registration fees for four-wheel drives, unless they are used for industry or on farms, The Courier-Mail reports.

"The petition . . . draws to the attention of the House (of Parliament) their concerns at the negative environmental impacts and effects of the excessive amount of air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from the use of four-wheel drive vehicles," the petition reads.

It said four-wheel drives were also a "physical danger to pedestrians and smaller vehicles in the event of collision".

The Government has yet to respond to the petition.

Nationally, most passenger car drivers think four-wheel-drives don't belong on city streets and consider them a danger to other road users, research shows.

They also want four-wheel drive owners to be hit with higher registration fees and feel intimidated when driving close to an off-road vehicle.

A recent survey, by insurer AAMI, found 77 per cent of passenger car drivers think 4x4s shouldn't be allowed in cities while 75 per cent considered them safer for the occupants but a danger to other road users.

Sixty-six per cent also backed higher registration fees for the larger vehicles.

Ironically AAMI's research also revealed that four-wheel-drive owners made fewer insurance claims than their passenger car colleagues.

The AAMI survey quizzed 2503 people across Australia.

Although I generally don't have a problem with them, it's the 5foot ladies who cant see over the dash who almost hit my car time and time again that get to me.

Quite problematic to enforce this particular idea and hardly like 20,000 signatories to this represents the views of the entire community in QLD.

There'd easily be 20,000 4WD owners to sign a counter-petition.

Sweeney Research conducted a telephone survey of 2503 men and women drivers, aged 18 years and older, in the following locations around Australia:

Adelaide, Ballarat, Bendigo and Shepparton, Batemans Bay, Bega and Ulladulla, Brisbane, Canberra, Central Queensland, Coffs, Harbour and Port Macquarie, Darwin, Geelong, Gold Coast, Hobart and Launceston, Melbourne, Newcastle and Gosford, North Queensland, Perth, Regional South Australia, Regional Western Australia, Sunshine Coast, Sydney, Tamworth, Toowoomba and Darling Downs, Wagga Wagga and Griffith, Wollongong and Nowra.

Funny how all the ones I have listed in bold above are more regional than city based and represent just under 3/4 of the total areas that they did the survey in. Probably find they asked 1 person from each of the 20 locations bolded and asked the other 2483 from the other 14 "city" based areas. Some of those locations would have more 4WD's per township then cars I reckon.

I'm happy for them to ban SUV's and AWD vehicles as they serve no real purpose apart from stature and are merely glorified people movers.

LEGITIMATE 4WD's on the other hand is a totally different story.

And 20,000 signatures?

Pfft, 300,000 or so signed the RACQ petition about rego increases, fuel etc and that was ignored.

What the hell is 0.45% of the QLD population going to achieve?

I'm going to agree with HSV on this one in many respects. For starters I think they are making a broad generalisation as to what constitutes a 4WD, it seems like anything higher than an econobox is going to be one which probably includes Ford Territories etc (which are RWD). Maybe they should try narrowing their search methods and focus on 4WD's that never see a dirt track (BMW X5, Mercedes Benz G series etc).

What would be more of benefit if they are worried about greenhouses emissions and crap is to introduce safety checks and roadworthys on all vehicles every year (like NSW) to get all the shit boxes off the road and actually make people fix the issues with there cars

If they were serious about this issue they would have a licence system similar to that of motorbikes, you have to complete a safety course to be able to drive a 2t monster around

Couldn't agree more. I had to do a separate test, and what no just to get my LR licence. Those trucks aren't much bigger then 4WD's. Also, regarding the rego. Bloody oath they should pay more. Why is it fair, then I'm slogged $1000 a year to rego my V8 Monaro, when it weighs almost the same as a V6 commodore (That pay $300 less.....) But, 4WD V6's that weigh a shit load more then me, pay less rego? I think its very unfair.

All well and good but they would have to introduce a modification setup similar to NSW's, have many more inspection stations etc for it to work.

I understand the NCOP is trying to come into effect but no-one can agree on the laws there.

Why should a suzuki carry van have to pay the same as a 4cyl then when it weighs almost half the weight?

Why should I have to pay to drive on a toll road when the government has failed its people in not providing enough infrastructure?

Your argument is flawed.

It's damn stupid and will never happen. I think a 4x4 would do the same damage to a little old ladies excel or jazz etc as a falcon or commodore hitting it. Mind you, it's the jacked up 4x4 that would prolly just drive over them. Rego costs to much as it is, so any other hike in prices would piss alot of people off.

sometimes a 4WD is a necessity outside the city limits. And if they want to ban 4WD whats the next step? Ban modified cars, imports, V8s...... lets all just drive around in Prius's!

You take that back....YOU TAKE THAT BACK!!! FUCKING PRIUS!!! FFFFFFF!!!

Some people require 4x4s...it's as simple as that. Going from the simple tradie who needs to carry his gear and supplies to the weekend 4x4 warrior who loves to get away from it all. I don't think these people need to be punished from just what they drive. I can't believe that a 4x4 would cause more damage to roads than a standard large car - what's the point of more rego for them? All sounds like a pack of sandy vaginas have run out of things to complain about.

I have no problem with any 4WD as long as they learn to mirror/shoulder check before merging ontop of me. I sometimes get annoyed if they are blocking my view in front, so either back off slightly as mentioned above or just change lane or get in front if possible; it's my problem for being low but I am willing to pay that price.

im all for 4WD owners who use them for their intended purpose, ive even thought about buying a 4by to have fun off road

the problem is the soccer mums (and dads) who use them as some status symbol and as such the vehicles NEVER see their purpose. The attitude of them is atrocious and yes, i can say im fucking scared to death of some 4 foot mrs. doubtfire wielding a 2 tonne patrol with a bullbar.

The amount of times I've had run-ins at Hyper because people cant wait. I even had the same problem in the Statesman. I even had some guy have a go at me the other week because I was reversing out of a spot, I checked to make sure no one was coming (twice even). He then goes about abusing me because I nearly hit him.

As said, it's all the bitumen bashers that give the real 4wd's the bad name. Use it properly or leave it at home.

Had this recently.

Was backing out in the 4wd in a carpark at shopping centre, had backed 3/4 of way out and was starting to turn, old fella about 30m away speeds up, figure he is going to try get the spot I had as it was out the front, but no he keeps coming, by this stage I am completely out and on an angle, he goes to squeeze past and I hit the brakes and must of missed his car by a poofteenth and I swear he must of been running his passenger tyres down the gutter.

Circle around and find where he has pulled in and ask him (was about 80) if he did not see the 10 foot high, 8 foot wide 3 tonne vehicle he almost rearranged his panels with to which he replied "Get fucked, I have right of way". Some words later which may or may not of contained "you stupid senile old cunt" and numerous other words which compared him with anatomical features, and he was still protesting he was in the right, to which an onlooker started laying into him as well.

He would of saved approx 6 secs to park in a car park where there were numerous spaces.

Say the ban was to be put into place, are people just that stupid to consider 4wd owners? What are they meant to do with their cars, burn them? You can't just come out and put a ban on something such a wide population of people across the country own. There is no way what so ever that this would ever actually be put into place, and as many of you have said what's a mere 20000 compared to the population of the country?

It's like randomly coming out and saying we need a ban on all pre 2000 Holden Commodores. Yes the people who don't own one would be for etc. In the end however you can't just ban something so big without some form of compensation to the owners.

i find that it usually old people (women mostly) that are the problems. the amount of times people have nearly taken the arse out of my audi... grrrrr makes me want to get out and gun them down.

merging lanes is even worse.

was playing cricket 2 weeks ago at kianawah park. turn left to get out of the grounds, and the lane ends. so i indicate well in advance, and when a decently sized gap appears i move into it...

but 80 year old @#$! in his corolla was having nothing of this euro luxo barge taking up the space he reserved for his lack of reflexes. so he puts foot and is promptly up my ass hooting, and passes me going halfway into the next lane (which was occupied by another car by the way).

so now i find myself still in the lane that has now ended. and i have nowhere to go. so this kind girl see's my predicament and stops so that i can move over infront of her. kind i thought...

WRONG. as i started to move over and thank her, she accelerated and swerved to avoid me yelling obsenities at me unsure.gif

Legitimate to who? Why should anyone have to justify their choice of vehicle to you or anyone else?

dangerous ground you're walking there HSV, and those who agreed. Substitute performance car for 4WD and see how you like it. Why do you need a performance car that uses more fuel and creates more pollution than a normal car? Why does anyone need a V8, turbocharged performance car or even just a V6 over a 4cyl? Justify your choice! A 4cyl can move people around at the national maximum speed limit and above. How dare you go around polluting the place just to satisfy your own ego! Follow this line of logic to its conclusion and these 4WD nazis will have us all driving Priii - is that the plural of Prius?

Are you insane? I would like to see you drive anything less than a 4x4 just to make it out of my brother-in-laws property after its been raining. Even my old property was almost impossible to drive a "run-of-the-mill 2wd car" through after a nights worth of rain, and it was under 2 acres.

I highly doubt he is going to lay 400 odd meters of stone/concrete etc driveway, sell his landcruiser and buy a Kia Rio just to keep some tree hugging faggots happy.

really? maybe I can help. Some people like to go a little off the beaten path for their holidays or just on weekends. A "normal" or "acceptable" (to these vehicle nazis) 2WD passenger vehicle won't get you far off the black stuff. So they choose to buy a 4WD. When they're not on holidays they drive their "all terrain vehicles in urban environments" the rest of the time. Pretty simple really.

Ok I'll bite.

Normal 4wd = workhouse/play vehicle.

SUV with RWD/AWD capability that is the same size as a large 4wd = wank factor, good for nothing piece of shit.

I shouldn't have to justify my vehicle at all, thats my point.

BUT when there is a clear problem with x amount of owners of such vehicle (in this case 5 foot mothers driving vehicles too large for their level of driving skills) then obviously something should be done before some one is hurt.

Responsibility in this case not only falls on the law makers but also the producers of such vehicles to provide something safer.

See: Supercar scare of the 70's for similar comparisons.
