Just got a 90 model 80 series 1hz that has an aftermarket turbo kit fitted.
It only goes about as well as a non turbo. I took off the exhaust, that didnt help.
I mucked around with fuel mixture, (tried it richer, and leaner) that didnt help either.
I checked the boost & its running at 1/2 bar or about 7-8 psi.
Now what do I do???

Needs more 1HDT and less 1hz-t smile.gif

1HDT hauls ass for a turbo diesel, never drove a turbo 1hz though

Fuel bud if thats all good and it can breathe properly there is not much more u can do and it will perform betta with exhaust on let me know how u go

3 inch mandrel zorst is going on tomorrow. I think it is breathing properly, I even took out the air filter to see if that helped. it didnt.
mabye cam timing is out or something stupid like that. Might check that....

1hz-t go ok, might need pump rebuild or pump timed.

QDAD should sort it.

I just checked the cam timing & it was right, but the belt tensioner wasnt tightening up so the belt was relying on the spring to hold tension on it the whole time. I have sorted that now & all thats left is to check the injector timing. Once thats done there isnt much else I can do...
Hope it is out.....

3" mandrel exhaust, no mufflers

Chuck a cooler on it if you can afford (or if it doesnt already have one)

Get it tuned properly!

You cant just go out and wind up the diesel pump without knowing exactly what you are doing. Diesels arnt cheap to rebuild either. Get upto Chapmans auto repairs in Cooroy: 14 Jarrah St, COOROY, QLD 4563

They will let you know if your pump or injectors are out and if they are/arnt will do one of the best tunes you can get done on a diesel. They done all the work to my old hj75 1HZ-T and 80 1HDT. 1HZ-T was stock pump and injectors, cooler, 3" exhaust and they got it upto 155HP @ the wheels on 35's, pyro still reading 500-550 fully loaded

Hmm i neva new that a diesel came with spark plugs and leads eek.gif
dont you mean the injectors. only thing they have close to a spark plug is glow plugs lol

Anyways man it has to do with you diesel pump. the 1hz motors were neva really intended to have a turbo straped to the side. your going to have to get your pump retimed or even a a 1hd injector pump or it.

With the amount of air you forcing into it the stock timing cant supply enough fuel hence why your not getting much power.

And dont worry about a cooler. they are pretty useless on a diesel has you want to keep the intake temps up otherwise you will be suffering the good old diesel knock rant2.gif

Hope this helps ya mate

You want inlet temps down or you will suffer the good old deisel melted piston.

The turbo will heat the air to 50-100 degree C approx, the cooler will help get this down closer to ambient temp.

Be careful who you listen to.

So how come you can get turbo diesel cars factory with an intercooler.

Put a turbosmart boost tee on it, up boost to 12psi, put a decent dump and 3" exhaust on, set timing to 1.09- 1.10 max lift at TDC. Turning the max fuel screw clockwise even 1 turn makes a huge difference. if you dont already get a pyro if you want to give it more fuel.Does it smoke at all? you know youve gotten too greedy with the fuel screw when you lose sight of all the cars behind you taking off at the lights. Put simply they do go VERY WELL turboed, i sold mine and bought a GU 2006 coil cab 4.2tdi and im still trying to make it go as good as my 80 did.... beaudesert dump, custom 3", zd30 air box mod, 15psi boost, max fuel up, boost compensator up, 8" thermo fan for intercooler......and only 70000kms! my 80 still went better with 350000kms and shitty old pump and injectors..........

also my 80 had bigger feet on it and the GU has standard tyres. with standard tyres on it would have been an animal

I agree with you on that but you want your intake temps to low unless you want diesel knock all the time. if you can get it to aprox 50'C than all should be ok

The factory intercoolers are designed to drop the intake temps slightly, but there main use is to make the air more dense. sowhen you get people putting big front mounts on there diesel, all they complain bout is diesel knock.

It does still smoke a bit, Thats how I have been setting up the mixture untill I get a pyro. I havent been going too crazy with the mixture, only been turning the screw about 1/8 th turn at a time.
Its got the 3" mandrel zorst on it now, & going in tomorrow to check the injector timing, so I will take those lift measurements you gave me into play.
I am not going top be using an intercooler for now as I need to stop spending money somewhere. My old man had a quick one years ago & it didnt have a cooler, so for what I want to do for now it will be fine. mabye down the track tho....
Thanks for the advice.

Well its bad news for me today.
The timing was Ok, but the pump isnt. Aparently the early 1HZs had a weakness in one area of the pump which causes wear in the housing, & fuel to pass by a piston. This causes the piston to knock against the side of the pump, causing the noise, & lose power due to the by-passing of fuel.
Now its time to try to get blood out of a stone again.
(Blood being money, stone being my empty wallet!)
