A year-long operation targeting trafficking, manufacturing and large-scale distribution of illicit drugs culminated today with police storming 15 properties in South-East Queensland.

Five people, including a 44-year-old Narangba man believed to be a prominent member of the Gold Coast drag-racing fraternity, were arrested.

The man was charged with producing the drug MDMA, growing cannabis and supplying amphetamines.

Police also seized an estimated $6.1 million worth of cash and property, including six high-performance cars and five motorcycles. All the vehicles were seized from a property near Yatala, south of Brisbane.

The raids were the third stage of Operation Golf Brazen, a joint investigation of the Queensland Police Service, Australian Crime Commission and the Queensland Crime and Misconduct Commission.

Today, police seized four pill presses worth about $40,000 on the black market and capable of procuding 1000 pills per minute.

They also found three hydroponic set-ups, 1825 MDMA (ecstasy) tablets, 80 grams of cocaine and $1 million in cash.

Search warrants were executed on the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Brisbane and one in NSW.

Since the operation began 12 months ago, 45 people have been arrested on 150 charges.

ACC chief executive Alastair Milroy said the operation had made a dent in a crime syndicate operating across three states, which also included Western Australia.

"We believe the drugs were predominantly distributed on the eastern seaboard of Australia," he said. "We are very pleased to have dismantled this network."

The CMC used its star chamber powers to elicit information from persons of interest, said acting Chief Superintendent Ian Parsons.

"Our investigators have provided crucial expertise in identifying assets bought with the proceeds of crime."

The 44-year-old man was due to face Brisbane Magistrates Court today.

Ohh yes, its all very innocent, im sure this will all be cleared up and an innocent man will be set free rolleyes.gif

Make no mistake, that was him in the news footage as he was arrested.

http://video.msn.com/video.aspx?mkt=en-au&...=s1215143394258

It wasnt a small operation judging by what was siezed and just how many states it spanned. Im sorry but I find his retirement a little too much of a coincidence, especially given the fact other people in the ring would have been arrested or raided previously.

Edit: Its also not the first time the same taskforce had made substancial raids for drugs.

A MAJOR Gold Coast drug syndicate operating out of 25 homes and businesses has been busted just days before the start of schoolies week.

In a joint operation between, Queensland Police and the Crime and Misconduct Commission (CMC) 10 people were arrested on 55 charges, with four men and one woman to appear in Southport Magistrates Court tomorrow charged with trafficking.

The 10-month operation, called Operation Golf Brazen, allegedly netted more than $750,000 in cash, 4.5kg of MDMA powder, 7500 MDMA tablets, two pill presses, amphetamines and cocaine.

Officers also seized $367,000 in cash, two vehicles and a motorcycle, suspected of being the proceeds of crime.

Queensland Police Detective Superintendent John Pointing said the operation was timely, as it came in the lead-up to the annual celebrations for school leavers.

"With schoolies due to begin this week it is certainly comforting to know a vast quantity of drugs has been removed, not only as a result of this closure, but also through recent operations undertaken by the state drug investigation unit," Supt Pointing said.

About 70 police and CMC personnel were involved in the operation.

Police have ended a year-long operation with five arrests yesterday, after busting a major drug manufacturing network in south-east Queensland and New South Wales.

Since the start of Operation Golf Brazen, 45 people have been charged and $6.1 million worth of drugs and cash seized.

Police also impounded 11 drag racing cars and motorbikes during the raids, and discovered four drug presses, each capable of manufacturing 1,000 pills a minute.

Michael Outram from the Australian Crime Commission says highly dangerous materials were being used to make the tablets.

"The kinds of things you can find in these drugs apart from the active ingredient can be caustic soda, concrete, chalk, all sorts of substances, that are used to fulfil various functions in producing the tablet," he said.

Detective Superintendent John Pointing says police have made a "dent" in the trafficking and manufacture of illicit drugs.

"It's a significant network capable of producing a large quantity of illegal drugs and generating large amounts of cash, so we're very pleased to have come this far," he said.

"The next phase is to pursue them financially and secure convictions in the court."

sorry, but thats bullshit. People who profit from the misery of other people dont deserve any credit at all, regardless of how good they are, its breaking the law and involves some pretty serious drugs, not to mention the crime that probably goes with it. If anything, their achievements should be motivation for them to come clean and do it all on their own, change their ways so to speak.

No, if he's convicted, any of his past efforts are washed away, he doesnt need to be congratulated, he should be condemned for doing it with dirty money. At that level of motorsport, the big dollars can mean all the difference, it could have been a different story without all the drug money to back him.

How much money do you think it costs to run such a large team like they had? now how much sponsorship dollars do you think they actually get? There arent many people in any form of motorsport in the world that dont fund their race team with their own money. Some of you overestimate just how much money sponsors are prepared to put up for motor racing in this country, do you really think they are throwing millions of dollars at him to totally fund the entire operation? Quite simply the market just isnt big enough to warrant that sort of outlay.

You guys are totally kidding yourself when you keep saying rumours. Its not rumours, the guy was arrested and charged, thats way past the point of rumours.

Motorsport is probably one of the last remaining areas to dump large amounts of money into without leaving a paper trail. You make cash that has no trace, you buy and sell parts with the money and nobody can really know exactly where everything came from and just how much money was generated or changed hands. Its nothing new, people and workshops have been done for similar things before.

As others have said, given the expanse across other states, this is just the begining. Plenty of rumours around that something will go down in wa very soon, so just wait to see the extent of the busts and how many people are involved. You guys might not like it, but if you face up to the facts, a national motorsport team provides a good distribution network for drug runners, its no coincidence that people have been caught.

We can talk about whatever we like. Ill state quite clearly, there is no way that sponsorship dollars paid for every single part of his operation. Go ahead and call me a liar, but anyone with any experience in motorsport at any level will tell you that sponsors just dont give up that much money. Even big motorsport teams are run as a business, generating income streams developing and supplying other companies and teams with components and services. In quite a lot of cases, when you look at revenue streams, their merchandising is actually worth as much, if not more than sponsorship dollars. People in here are of the opinion that sponsorship dollars pay for everything, but quite simply thats just not the case for pretty much anyone in the world, regardless of the size of your operation or your level of motorsport. Somewhere down the track you have to generate money from elsewhere. Why do you think they sieze any and all assets when something like this goes down? I said right from the start, wait and see the outcome and how indepth it is when it all comes out, but its a fallacy that sponsors pay for everything, especially when you consider the market drag racing has in this country, its hardly reached the height of national publicity has it? they have been trying hard to get there, but at the end of a day, a sponsor is only willing to give up money based on just how much exposure you can bring their product.

In saying that, people are kidding themselves if they want to pretend its not him or his business isnt involved in any way. Anyone who still is skeptical about the man in question being brett stevens, take note the name on page 5. http://www.courts.qld.gov.au/practice/lawl...arrestcourt.pdf

Its a shitty situation for all people involved, but there is no way in hell the guy should be idolised if convicted, hell. Lets face it, what has gone down only affirms what some people (including those in drag racing) have suspected for quite some time. So your saying after a 12 month investigation the cops are going to arrest the wrong guy? Im not pretending to be a big shot in the motor racing industry, where have I ever said anything to the fact? In fact, I actually said to wait and see when it all comes out, that way we can see just how involved it is.

However, people are kidding themselves if they think sponsorship works that way and its here where I have some experience over the years. It just doesnt work like that, no matter if you are car racing, playing football or trying to get your business of the ground. People just simply arent willing to throw huge amounts of money around without getting a large return on their investment. Because, at the end of the day, you are an investment.

Heck, you'll find big motorsport companies in australia that survive off their other business interests, selling services and products to the greater community outside of motorsport. There isnt a top level motorsport team in australia that isnt involved in the development and supply of things within their industry. Whether it be logistics and transport or right through to sales and service for equipment, they simply dont get all their money from sponsors. Or you could stick your head in the sand and pretend the sponsor picks up the cheque at the end of each and every day.

Put it in a realist situation. If you are a business, what do you think your nett profit at the end of the year would have to be in able to afford to outlay millions of dollars a year in sponsorship agreements? 50 million? 100 million? more? its far from small change. Its quite the opposite, teams work hard outside of racing to generate income to keep their business afloat, they dont rely on sponsorship dollars to pay for everything, you'd probably even find brett stevens would admit as much to the fact. The money has to come from elsewhere too, and in this case, given the scale of the situation, you cant deny that something is going on. I mean, come on, a multi million dollar outfit has basically just been foreclosed on impacting on quite a number of people I would imagine. Could you think of the damages and compensation claims that would follow it it all turns out to be a sham? its not just arresting your average petty criminal on the street who is suspected of a few b&e's, they arent going to take this lightly, knowing full well the implications of what will happen if they get it wrong.
