Hey,

I have been without a computer for a while so I haven't had the chance to process any of my shots...

Long story short - Went to Sydney and took some photos in the 4 hours I had spare in the city.

These are them. All Taken with the D80 and 17-55mm f/2.8

#9 is great, I love the way the tunnel draws the eye and the blown out background frames the subjects. Good comp aswell!

#5 has good comp too.

To me the others just don't draw the eye as well (lack a focal point).

Were they handheld? If so you did a great job at keeping the camera steady in the longer exposure shots like #10 and #11

I always checkout your thread when you post tongue.gif

#1 - Looks quite soft, lacks punch.

#2 - Lacks punch

#3 - Better than #4, not my thing

#5 - Easily my favourite of the set, nice composition and good colour. A stand out

#6 - Central positioning doesn't grab me

#7 - Lacks any real punch, needs more contrast and vivid colour to really pop. Also looks really soft.

#8 - Good potential, the foot is very sharp but the central compostion doesn't work well with it. Perhaps crop from a little above the guy's waist and end it just before the gum on the ground about 1/5th of the way in from the right.

#9 - 3rd favourite

#10 - A little over exposed for me, also soft.

#11 - Central positioning, since the fake gypsy lady is facing to the left I feel it'd be better placed more towards the right.

#12 - Also good, man gets a little cramped though

#13 - Alright but lower right quarter very lonely

#14 - Good composition but very soft

#15 - I like the tone, but it would be far better if it could be shot without the modern ugly scooter

What pp are you doing that makes these seem so soft? Something about them just isn't 17-55 f/2.8 quality.

BTW, you might like to have a little peek here

www.mrx.no/album206.html

some very good candids in my opinion

Fisher
Post #951

Thanks heaps for the awesome feedback Parko!
The I don't think the pp is what is making them so soft, I think it is the hosting. There are a few (like #2 and 7 and a few others) which have alot of fill light and recovery done in pp which make them so flat, when I used the contrast it blows them out for some reason. I'm still getting my head around the new options in CS3! I really appreciate you spending the time to C&C so thoroughly, I've taken everything on board and I totally agree with you about all of them. I might go back and see what I can recover.

Chris F,
Thanks alot mate, the softness is probably because of the hosting (I've gotta change the site I use!) They are all handheld, the slowest is 1/5th (#10) but mostly at about 1/13th (like #3 and #13).

Thats a top effort at those shutter speeds/focal length for hand held (I have really shakey hands)

imageshack.us is your saviour, the quality isn't touched at all and you can upload as much as you like wink.gif

To give you an idea of the actual sharpness, here is an original shot at ISO 800, f/5, 1/20th handheld.

Harry

thats really quite sharp (discounting the effects of the noise)... give imageshack a go and see what you think.

There we go, quite the lens indeed!

By my god is the D80's high ISO (well, 800 isn't that high at all) noise terrible. I'm mainly shooting outdoors and in the open with nothing really above ISO400 so I don't really notice it so much. I bet you'd love a D3 Harry!

Yeah, I am craving a D3, ISO 25,600!!! That was brightened 1 stop in pp which made the noise far worse but it is still annoying as hell!

HALF PRICE!

That scooter shot is pretty bland my friend. I know i can't comment, but the horizon line is off, and the wall looks poo!

I thought you would put a vignette around the scooter or something to give the shot a bit more life, depth. I don't know but my opinion with these shots, you have to go arty and really work the photo, to give it some more guts or balls.

I like the first subway shot and the painting shot, it is more harryesct!

All i know now is your going to rip the shit through me next time i put a photo up hey?

Personally i think your would be one the best photographers on this site by a long way.

oh well keep in touch dude!

With that shot you can only do so moch before it dies. As stated before it is off on the horizon, but i like it off a bit. What you have done in the P.P. has worked well.

The subway shot looks great. My fav.
The sign writes might look better with out as much noise.

This and that, they are still good.

Hell yes, scooter and last shot best by far.

2nd shot has far more punch and remarkably less noisy, 3rd I'm not too big on.

I don't know if you're interested in the commercial stuff I've been doing, still it'd be great to get some feedback on some of it, always looking to make my clients happy by giving them good quality stuff.

A few random commercial ones and a shoot from a previous press conference with Ian McFarlane:

the noise is pretty bad in #1 and #4, and the lighting seems flat in #1 (guessing you used a flash mounted directly on the camera). The only other criticism is the white balance in 2 and 3 - must have been an ugly hue to the light!

Having said that I'm sure they would have been happy, the shots with Ian McFarlane are nice and crisp smile.gif

#1 doesn't have any noise. It's ISO100 using HDR, that's why the lighting is so flat #4 is kinda noisy though. It was really annoying shooting there because shadows look so shit in that shed thingo.
The shots were designed to be flat so that you could see all the details when it's blown up big. Commercial shots suck ass, they are so boring and illustrative.

Thanks for the comments though.

you've definitely got the details covered.

It might just be compression artifacts/effects of the HDR but in #1 I can see grain wherever there's blue.

Still, good on you for posting up some of your more 'boring' stuff - I still found it interesting

Yeah, you're right. I didn't really notice that till now. I can't explain it... Weird.

What do you think of the shots of old Johnny in the previous set?

Harry

chris_F
Post #972

With the Johnny set #6 and #7 are the standouts to me because they tell a story. The expression in #6 is great and him drinking the water in #7 is intended to send a message. Quality is fine in all of them though I prefer the ones more tightly cropped around Johnny.

It's hard to critique them any other way, because this sort of photography is more about capturing the moment/story than artistic expression.

Are they gonna be published anywhere?

parko

A job well done, but yes, a little boring. Great quality images from those lens mate.

I quite like it - you immediately notice the big dark, dank wall on the left then the light in the lower corner leads yo to the scooter and you think "oh... a cute little scooter, what's this doing here?".

shit harry!

don't think i'm having a go at you, i just thought with the talent you have you could be a bit more bold and make bit more of a statement, you know really make the scooter stand out more.

shit man, and i'm really just stirring, you know how picky i am when it comes to certain stuff.

Fark, to everybody else i can't critique somebodies work like everybody else without being blasted, especially harry who has his 2 cents in everybody else work. to me harry is better than that photo and could make it work better, but hey everybody on this site has only seen a sample of his work and not everything.

Hey man,

I think u took it a bit the wrong way - Parko wasn't having a go at you and neither was I, he was just putting in his 2 cents, critique from different people is often very different, all opinions are equally valid.

Also - You'd be suprised just how much of my work this site has seen. This site has taken me from a 17 yr old Kid with NFI to what I am today. This was the first place I ever posted any of my shots - about a month after I started playing with my D50... Hence the 40 Page thread! - Longest thread in the photography section - not bad for a yr and a half!
